Dang this place used to be one of the best sandwich places in the area. Our group of coworkers would head here for lunches during the weekdays. However..... I think Mr. G's has suffered drastically. They HAD a huge menu of specialty sandwiches, which with the limited number of staff, mostly newer people, is difficult to manufacture. Now it seems they have slimmed down the menu but it still takes too long. Old MR. G's had blackboard with hand scribbled sammwiches on it. Firstly, they can't seem to keep worker turn over low. Employees seem to be changing and with the large selection of sandwiches it is difficult to learn and get them all correct. They constantly seem to have "Help Wanted" signs. Second, does it really take 20-30 minutes to make a sandwich??!! I think this was the downfall of the Mr. G's..... But it was caused by the loss of employees. Third, just not busy anymore... but sandwiches still take 20 minutes....Even the coworkers who have been stalwarts of this place had complaints that it was taking way darn too long. read more

Then when we started to put our order in & after putting in 3 out of 4 orders we paused for a brief second and she interrupted us when we started to speak again and said "Sir.. we are very busy" in a rude tone. Pretty decent sandwich shop. It's right next to the Specs it's attached to, so it's definitely nothing fancy. But the people that work there are pretty nice and fast. My first and (so far only) time going there was based off someone's recommendation and I brought my parents. We each liked our sandwiches, though I felt like maybe they were a little pricey for the size with no sides included? The sides we tried were also good too; so as long as you like the stuff that comes on the sandwich you order and all that, then you should leave pretty satisfied. Picked up a to-go order from here today for our weekly work lunch. When I called in the young lady on the phone allowed me to place the order (@ 10:15 am) even though I could not pick it up until 11:00 or a little after which I was very gracious for her not making me wait until 11:00 to place my order. I was in shock when I walked to the counter in the back how big the deli actually was.... they have tables which could accommodate quite a crowd!!! G'S HOT ITALIAN HOAGIE Capocollo, genoa salami, pepperoni, turkey pastrami, provolone, spicy pepper mix, onions, italian dressing, -all heated- on grilled french bread. It was ok... I wouldn't order it again but I will say that spicy pepper mix ROCKS! I will want that again on the next sandwich that I try from there! A co-worker of mine ordered the #18 THE GOLDEN ZAZZA Prosciutto, roasted turkey breast, sauteed spinach & mushrooms, grilled sweet peppers, sicilian & kalamata olives, oregano, provolone, EVOO & red wine vinegar on grilled naan bread and they forgot the turkey but she said it was still pretty good. I will give it another try because of how big the menu is and the #81 THE DIRK NOWITZKI MONSTER looks like it is to die for but I didn't want to be the piggy in the group at my work lunch so I saved it for a trip with my man. I seldom select 5 stars but Mr G's comes close. Maybe if they gave you a pickle with the sandwich I'd have given them a 5 star review. I got the deluxe #11 (traditional Ruben). Wow, I could barely eat any dinner I was so full all day. I took three co-workers with me. They are sold. One said he almost took his wife there for dinner the same day. Luckily not only are they in the same building as I buy my spirits from but they are just down the street. A win-win! If you like deli style sandwiches, you've got to try Mr G's. Wow. If you see my previous review, you will see I lived this place haven't been here in a year or two and man have things changed. The unique sandwich menu is all but gone. All that is left is a menu of maybe 10-20 generic deli sandwiches. My sandwich was good. My fiancée was not. Such a shame. Drove all the way to Plano to show my fiancé this place only to be let down. Spec's is lying to you. This is NOT Mr. G's Deli! Yes, Spec's has the windows plastered with Mr. G's and all of their Zagat awards, but, Mr. G's is dead. This is just a Spec's deli where they are trying to ride on Mr. G's reputation. The Mr. G's menu is gone. The fine lady that ran Mr. G's is gone. It is a much reduced menu from what Mr. G's was. It is a Spec's menu. My sandwich was ok, but, overpriced and not what I came for. I won't be back, particularly while Spec's continues to lie about who they are. One note for readers. Great point! Let me know when you have another deli place to get a REAL REUBEN! Last time I went to this place, they subbed my Reuben's sauerkraut with...get this...none other than COLESLAW! Bread was also dropping with oil and not crispy. Never went back and never, until now, had I considered that they deserved even the time it'd take to write a negative review. But my husband wanted to go there because "it smelled like they had good burgers"...I told him to save (my) money. Mr. G's (as another reviewer mentioned) is no more. Took my wife here yesterday for lunch. We've been here one other time a very long time ago. We were in the area, hungry, so we decided on this place. Mr G's is inside a Spec's liquor store. As long as you know that, you'll be fine. I ordered "The Corby" which is supposed to be spicy, key word, chicken breast, onions, peppers, yadda yadda in a tortilla. I also ordered the potato salad they had in their case. One word on both - MEH!! I was totally underwhelmed. My chicken was far from spicy. And, to be honest, it was just sloppy tasting. The potato salad was just horrible. I paid $2 for it, so I ate it. Wife said she enjoyed her sandwich but doesn't like the weed mix salad and wasn't a fan of the raspberry dressing. And as a bonus, I bad heartburn all friggin afternoon. Nothing more really to say. Maybe I should of gotten something else. Won't be back. read more

So....Stopped i yesterday for lunch, this is the second time we have been here, with the first being-5 years ago. This would have been Pre-Specs days. What I recall was 5 years ago, the menu was "fuller" fresher, and the place was setup, like a Deli. What a difference time has made on the old Girl. The menu, I recall now has many less items to choose from. They offer the Ruben, Pastrami, Burgers some salads, Philly, Hoagie and club, Turkey sandwiches. The guy at the counter quickly pointed out to the folks in front of me "no Turkey"...he didn't know what happened to the sign, and blamed in on some Asian bird-flu and some snafu in ordering. He repeated this "no Turkey statement" to each patron who approached the counter, further stating; "there used to be, or should have been a sign" stating the lack of Turkey". Really? I would have "made another sign" instead of reading off the same line to each patron as a disclamer and citing some kind of "bird flu". So, I notice that eliminating the turkey from the menu shreds the already limited menu down to items that contain meat, which is fine by me, since I recall the Ruben, from several years ago that i'm looking to re-visit! As we approach the counter to order, the counter guy "reminds the folks in front of me" there is a 5% up-charge for charge cards on each order and they prefer cash or debit. I'm thinking THIS is why I DON'T SHOP SPEC's for that very reason. Look, I'm a white dude living in the Burbs, I don't carry cash, so this has me pissed off out of the gate. But...we are hungry and so I elect to place my order. I order the Ruben on Marble Rye and my wife the "chefs salad". The Sand-which was $7.95- plus up charge and tax. As I wait for the food to arrive, I take a survey of the place and notice the "lack" of deli-support chips, pickles, and just the vibe you wold expect from a "deli". As the other folks get their food, Philly and Hoagie, I see the look of underwhelming shock; a lonely sandwich's appears in a hastily put together sandwich basket. No pickle, nothing, nadda, just a toasted bun with some kind of meat product arraigned and hidden in the bread. At this point i know I am most likely gonna be let down! I survey the back of the Deli-counter and see the prepackaged offerings you can expect to receive from ANY discount food supply store. Not the lined up displays of fresh (sic) meat you can see at for example SUBWAY. And Let down I was! The sandwich arrives crispy with a ton of Swiss cheese, Sauerkraut, some dressing and 2 pieces of black-NOT pink, NOT red, but BLACK Corned beef! First I give it a smell, seems okay, then I ask my wife to take a bite, you know the "taster" so I can gauge here face and see if see turns blue or immediately goes into convulsions...NOPE, she LIVED! so I take a bite and notice, this thing tastes NOTHING like Corned Beef, at all, whatsoever, not even in appearance. I scoop up the "lonely sandwich" and march over to the "short order cook" who I assume is NEW to the operation as the "counter guy" has to clue him and the lady helping out how to carefully craft up one of the overpriced beauties they are pushing out on the Plano lunch crowd. I show the "grill cook" my sandwich and ask him the follows TWO questions: 1. Why is this Corned beef BLACK and NOT a bright pink/red when all the other Corned Beef I have ever seen or had has this as the fundamental requirement? 2. What king of Corned Beef IS THIS and are you SURE its Corned Beef? The guy stops moving "whatever the grease, crumb, meat product creation" he was preparing and actually says to me..."Man-why are you asking me such difficult questions"? !!!!!!! I was astounded at THAT response, no answer, no excuse, just another question to my question. Now I realize the "extensive menu" has quite a few items on it (sic) that must take quite a bit of brain power to memorize the content and makeup of each creation-REALLY? I just said 30% of the menu was unavailable due to bird flu. SO I site back down, ,make a mental note and ask my wife how the Chefs salad tastes. NO BUENO Her readout is like this, It has that per-manufactured store bought, 7-11 approach to it. Large cheddar cheese extrusions covering over the salad bowl and what appears to be TURKEY? Holy crap, this has me pancaked that it may be the Bird Flu Turkey the dude keep referring to ?!?!?! But wait, the Turkey has the same consistency of the cubed water-logged turkey that you can only find next to gas station sushi, pita pockets and other "fresh offerings" from the soon to be abandoned truck stop near you. Saved by bird flu, but still not good. The Dressing is very mayonnaise..E, and the salad itself has that chemical salad brightener-refrigerator taste you can only expect from eating it in the International Space station. We dump and we head off to Chic fli a. This place sucks, the food, experience, staff and don't forget the 5% up charge has me longing for the "deep fried" food in a day old case. read more

I was attracted by the glowing reviews and I really appreciate a good Reuben. My first impressions were hampered by the 4 tables with trash on them despite them having just one person eating, one person waiting, and me ordering. The service was quick. I was thoroughly underwhelmed by the $7.50 sandwich. It was not all that full and I could not taste any sort of dressing. The bread was more warm and flabby than toasted. It is served with no garnish, a pickle would be nice. I really see no reason to return. If you want to try a good Reuben in the area for comparison, try Deli News on Preston a few miles away with pickles and a nice homemade potato salad and a drink for roughly the same price of a much smaller sandwich and a bag of ruffles here at Mr G's. I really missed this place, brought my new husband to try it since we were in the area. The first thing that's changed is a drastically reduced menu. I chose a sandwich that sounded like my old #34, and when I asked the unfriendly cashier if that's the best match, she said it's as close as they get. Gee thanks. Her rudeness in general was extremely offputting. Owners: I implore you to hire someone that will smile in return. It says a lot that her attitude had me log onto Yelp. This sandwich was expensive and gross. They turned the roast beef into jerky on the grill, no idea why. It's dry, flavorless, and covered in very cheap swiss. For $9, I would have preferred 9 McDoubles, at least they're not overcooked. Too rude, too expensive, and are still open based on the previous restaurant's reputation. I like the whole deli in a gas station-ish thing they got goin' on. I also like the limited hours, it makes it feel like a treat when I am able to make it in. I also like that it makes me feel all Oklahoma cira 1990. So they have about 3489349803903824 million choices for sandwiches. My party and I ended up with a Cheese Steak and California Club. I used to be a bigger fan before Central Market and lots of the "cool" places started carrying good beer. A year ago or so, it was an amazing beer oasis at the edge of Plano. I've heard it's the biggest beer selection in the Southwest USA. Anyway, now that there are more places to get my Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout, Chimay Grand Reserve, and Duval, it's not quite the same. Prices are about the same as everywhere else, but you do have some beer lovers in the store who are familiar with the product and helpful to talk to. I think I go there now more out of habit than anything. The deli is good, but I don't make a habit out of eating there. One thing that is nice, is the 3 & 5 liter beers. They have Duval and the Chimay, and maybe Maredsous or something in those huge Nebukednezzars or magnums, or whatever the proper name for "big ass" bottles is. I like to give them as gifts, as people get a kick out of knowing it's a 100.00 bottle of beer. read more

Mr. G's is just about perfection for beer and wine lovers. It's three to four times bigger than your average beer and wine place, and most of the space is dedicated to good quality stuff. Huge selection of craft, micro, import, and specialty beers. The best variety is of Belgian and Belgian style ales, from light and fruity, to dry and heavy. Stout, IPA, you name it, they carry it. They rotate things out a lot so there is always something new to try. They also carry bar ware, and gave a small selection of beer glasses. Based on reviews I thought I had found a place for a real Pastrami on Rye, but alas, I was once again disappointed. Now I must say I'm judging the Pastrami sandwich on the best in the world which is Katz's Deli in NYC. Yeah, I know the bar is set way too high. The sandwich could have been great if it actually had a decent amount of pastrami on it. This stuff was very thinly sliced and the ratio of bread to meat was way, way off. My wife had a sandwich called the Mexican (or something like that) and she was not impressed either. I plan to go back and see if they can slice the pastrami thicker and make it they way I want but I'm not holding out much hope. The girl who was working the counter seemed "put out" by our presence there and was not very friendly. New Years Eve, I wanted a couple of bottles of Moscato de Asti so I decided while I was there to just grab a sandwich from the deli in the back. I had high expectations from the word of mouth reviews & because the Deli at the Spec's Liquor Warehouses in Houston usually Rock. Anyway... I ordered a # 53 with no lettuce. The description mentioned hot peppers and I figured they would be like those of PotBelly. Man was I wrong There were maybe 5 peppers on my entire 8"+ sandwich. What they didn't skimp on was the oil the peppers had previously lived in. I know that oil on a sandwich is a common occurance, but BLECH! Yuck. I don't like bread much to begin with, but soggy bread... no way Jose. Anyway, I liked the meat on the sandwich, it was nice & fresh. To be honest, I was a little 'iffy' about going to a deli inside a beverage store... But I'm glad i put that all aside. I went for a quick lunch with a friend and had the Italian Sub. I liked the filling but felt like the bread was a bit dry. My friend had one of the philly cheese steaks and it looked delicious!
