For a sandwich joint - this is bomb. I was skeptical/curious of a sandwich place inside a liquor store...but I can be adventurous! So glad I was. I expected something much smaller, but Mr G's was the whole back wall of Spec's. Tables and booths to sit in as well. The lady taking orders was very happy and proud of the food - always a good sign. Food - overall. Hefty meat servings & delish! My friend ordered the pastrami melt - she said it was great. Extra points for toasting the bread on the outside. I had the Cuban with pasta salad on the side. Cuban was amazing, but I will ask for more mustard next time. But meat/cheese/pickle ratio was spot on. The pasta salad was tasty, but a little too heavy on the mayo for me. Also - it needed something tart/sour for more flavor, like pimentos or pickles. IMO. Great deli tucked behind a liquor store. So many sandwich to choose from but I settled on their Reuben Pastrami. I liked that the sandwich was served warm. Greasy but real flavorful. Brought my dad her for lunch today and we split the Texas Reuben and a side of potato salad. The sandwich consisted of rye bread, pastrami, cheddar cheese and coleslaw. It was grilled and served hot. When the employee realized I was splitting the sandwich with my dad, she made sure they cut it in the back and it was served on separate platters which I really appreciated. Was craving a good deli sandwich for lunch and Google brought this place up. What an unsuspecting spot for this deli shop, in the back of Specs Liquor store. One stop shop I guess....genius idea! They had both hot and cold sandwiches and also a seating area. I chose to get mine to go. Quick service, maybe because it was much later past lunch time. I ordered the Texas Chicken Reuben which was a hot sandwich. It was stacked with a good amount of meat, sauerkraut and pickled jalapeños along with this sauce or aioli spread. It was DELICIOUS! I heard about Mr. G's Deli when I used to work at DSC Communications (later became Alcatel and now John Paul II High School) on Coit Road. This was back in 1997. Never ate there until yesterday. Why did I wait so long? A few doors away is Dickies BBQ. I have never been a big fan, but was nearby and wanted to get some BBQ pulled pork brisket sandwiches. Little pricey for $12.99 each. I went to Mr. G's and ordered their version of BBQ pulled pork brisket sandwiches and we were very impressed. The sandwich had more brisket, more toppings (pickles) and was actually $3.00 cheaper. I just saved $9.00 by ordering something better (sorry Dickies, but my opinion) at Mr. G's. I will be back again to try their Philly Cheese Steaks, French Dips, Classic Italian, etc. We ate the sandwiches too fast to get photos. Lots of booths inside so you can eat there. read more

Mr G's sandwiches are all delicious. I've tried many over the years, not all, but have never been disappointed. It's "order at the counter," and the staff is good about letting you know when it's ready. There's no table service. It's inside and at the very back of a Spec's liquor store with only a few tables to eat at, so the ambiance isn't great. That said, the excellent food morenthan makes up for it. read more

I had the chicken Philly and my friend had the bbq bourbon sub and he loved it. I didn't think I would find this on yelp so I didn't take pics since it's inside of specs, but it's great! The sub was suppose to be spicy but it wasn't but it was well seasoned. It has carrots & celery which were odd but ended up being really good. His spud was very meaty & loaded. Definitely slept on and a hidden gem inside the liquor store. They were quick too. Just stumbled upon them being super hungry while shopping for liquor for Memorial Day. It was so good! Mr G's deli is one of those sandwich shops in the back of a liquor store that I miss from Southern California. Unfortunately they're very few delis that are as good as California delis, at least on the West Coast. Mr G's is extremely good at the sandwiches, their sides not so much but I'll give them five stars for the California dreamin' sandwich that they have. It's a little pricey but it is delicious! FAST review: FOOD: I have been coming here for the last 10+ years. The food has declined in quality and attention to detail over the last few years. They are still a solid A++ on their Reuben, but I had a California Turkey and avocado recently, that came out on stale, toasted sourdough bread. I ended up picking out the turkey & avocado & eating only that. ATMOSPHERE: If you don't know, this deli shares space with the Spec's Liquor Store. Personally, that doesn't bother me at all, the original Spec's in Houston also had a Deli in it. Stopped in for the first time. It is literally situated in a liquor store. I asked what's the favorite for my hubby-- a MR G's something. I also ordered a chicken Caesar salad and a spinach veggie wrap. The salad was very nice sized and the wrap was huge. My DIL and I shared the salad and wrap. This will be one of my shortest reviews. If you think it's weird to have a deli in the back of a liquor store, it is. My first time, I came in the front door of Spec's & had to find my way to the back. They have a side entrance on 15th Street should you venture this way. Okay, the prices are decent. They have a really diverse, deli-style menu. The problem I have is that they load you up on this, heavy bread and go short on meat. On the subject of their meats, they appear to be of the super-thin cut variety one used to find in the grocery stores for about 50 cents a small package (Buddig, I believe, was the brand). The food comes out quickly, and there is some inside seating. Just beware - the liquor store patrons seem to find it necessary to walk all the way into the deli area to turn down each aisle, and they like to stink-eye the people eating lunch. I will compliment them on the french dip au jus. It made an average sandwich, short on meat, rather worth the visit. read more

I miss old Mr. G's and if you been around these parts very long you probably do too. This place used to be the best liquor store and the best deli all under one big roof. You could go in and one of the staff who looked like he'd been a heavy drinker every day of the last two decades would tell you absolutely anything you wanted to know about a beer or wine from any country. Judge if you want but as for me I love an enthusiast with first hard knowledge. Now it's just Spec's. The building is the same but the beer selection is not anything like it once was. And the people who work there are just employees trying to earn a living while some fat cat who I can only presume is named Mr. Spec runs this and a dozen other of DFW's booze joints probably from a yacht. But if you're gonna go to one of these soulless big brand stores for your bulk Jack Daniel's and Captain Morgan's, this one is at least average and probably a little bit better. I don't feel dirty being in the store like I do in some of Plano's smaller shops and I'm not worried someone's going to reenact Falling Down here. It's friendly and safe and they have big bottles of stuff to mix with orange juice. Now as for the deli--first let me lament. There used to be a chalkboard behind that counter that went neatly floor to ceiling and I think had 80 or so sandwiches on it. It was a deli so good that Kanye would call up Mel Gibson and complain about what they're taking over. But not now. Now it's a little menu with twenty or so items and one of the nicest ladies you'll meet running it. Of what they got, I have to recommend the sweet peppered bacon that comes with turkey or a club or a BLT. It's thick like jerky but sweet like candy. And that alone makes it worth it. But they have Swiss and Cheddar and the usual stuff. It's not bad. It's just not a super deli anymore and I wish it was. The soda machine is stocked with a bunch of knock off but cane sugar beverages and I couldn't find one to like, personally but the ice tea was just fine. Or from the same counter you can get any of the world of alcoholism including some $20 four packs of stuff made by monks and that's probably the better way to go. read more

Mr. G's Deli has streamlined their menus and have some nice, new menu boards, but beware, there has been some pruning of the prodigious sandwich menu, and anything that featured chili or hot dogs are victims (the Bob Sturm sandwich was one such example, which, of course, was the one I really wanted). My raison d'être for this visit was a meatball sub for my wife; she was in the hospital across the street recently but too under the weather to enjoy anything from here, so I promised something good. I also picked up a Cuban sandwich for myself, so this review will be mostly about that sandwich (although I did sneak a bite of hers). First up, if you're hoping for a pressed Cuban sandwich, it's not happening. However, authenticity starts to ramp up after that. The pickles, mustard (albeit a little light), Swiss cheese, ham and roast pork, they're all here. The bread itself, a baguette, is actually quite good as well. There's a good amount of meat, and it's quality stuff. The cheese has a good flavor, not like the near plastic of some places. Bottom line, a very nice sandwich. Next time, I'll consider bringing it home and doing my own press job on it; I've perfected that technique making them at home. As promised, a word about the meatball sub: Mentioned in my earlier review, the meatballs were outstanding; they're also huge and there are four of them, making a really big sandwich. If there was a shortcoming, it was a little light on marinara; consider asking for extra or a side container of it. I'm impressed with these selections, and continue to be a Mr. G's Deli fan. I recommend the pastrami andd corned beef but honestly I don't think there is 1 bad thing on the menu. Fantastic sandwich! I had the Gigi's Rueben which was turkey, Swiss cheese, coleslaw, Russian dressing and toasted rye. I requested sauerkraut instead of coleslaw because I prefer it on a rueben. Wow, so damn good! Plenty of hot turkey, melted Swiss cheese, warm sauerkraut, tangy Russian dressing and delicious toasted rye bread with caraway seeds, all put together masterfully. Quality at Mr G's deli has gone way downhill over the years. Used to get some top notch sandwiches for lunch there. Now what you get is huge amounts of bread, lean on meat and thrown together in a hurry. There is no love involved any more. Last visit I got the meatball sub, and it's a huge chunk of soggy hogie roll bread with 4 huge meatballs on it, with barely any marinara sauce and semi-melted cheese. The flavor was just meh, Subway quality. Honestly there was so little sauce I don't know how the bread got soggy. Maybe it depends on who is working on what day, not sure. But next time I'll be skipping this and going to Jimmy Johns or Jersey Mike's. read more
