Now I do not give Mr. Henry's 4 stars because of the quality of the food, although the food is tasty. I give Mr. Henry's 4 stars for sheer fun value. Friends and I have gotten into the habit of hitting Mr. Henry's on Monday nights for half-price burger night. That night usually includes decadently bad for you onion rings or fries, acceptably tasty burgers, some kickin' drinks, and just joshing around with the almost-all-gay wait staff and the fabulously mixed crowd of diners. It's a good time was had by all kind of event, set in a dark-paneled, furniture old as the hills, alcohol and cholesterol will never kill you kind of place. I kind of like it. I was very dissapointed. The turkey burger my husband ordered tasted like it was still alive and the chicken burger I had was nothing to rave about. No flavor at all. Our beer came in plastic cups (never good). Although they were very dog friendly and nice, we probably won't return. read more

Had a very good experience for happy hour. Miranda, the waitress, was very attentive and friendly. The rye beer was excellent and the happy hour appetizer cheese fries were unique and tasty. I wish Yelp would have an option to rate a restaurant 0 stars. Long story short, my friend's wallet was stolen by another customer at this establishment. Thankfully she was able to grab her wallet out of the guy's hands before he got away with it. While this whole mess was going down, management did absolutely nothing to step in to control the situation. It was only after the guy left when management came over to ask what was going on. Even then, the manager (or someone from higher up) did not provide any retribution and did not offer future changes to ensure that this won't happen to anyone else. It does not matter if the food, service, or location of the restaurant is good. If customers can't feel or be safe at an establishment (especially if the management isn't proactive in these types of situations), then it is not worth anyone's time and money. read more

I live on Capitol Hill. This is one of my favorites. I've been here maybe 50 times in the past 3 years or so. Best burgers in DC. The onion rings are great too. Mr Henry's is a prime example of how overpriced the food is in DC compared with every other major city I've ever lived in/visited. I could not believe how much they're getting for even the most basic menu items. I went in there with a bit of a hangover, so I ordered a grilled cheese/tomato/bacon. It was $8.95!!!! And it came with stale tortilla chips. Who eats plain tortilla chips anyway? It costs an extra $2.75 for a 1/2 order of fries instead. And a soda...$2.95. What?????? So a completely average (at best) lunch was more than $20!!!! WTF? The upstairs was freezing cold and rather dirty, with old sticky tables, smelly carpet and rickety tables. Considering the shabby environment, I can't imagine their overhead is high enough to warrant the obscenely high prices. I don't get it. read more

My boyfriend and I sometimes have a hard time finding places we can both enjoy, I am a vegetarian and he is not! We ventured over to Mr. Henry's because my boyfriend remembered a sandwich that he had in the past at Mr. Henry's, called the Breadboard, and remembered it fondly enough to want to try it again. I was pleasantly surprised by some promising sounding selections on menu for the veggie in us all. The appetizers were essentially ignored on this trip, most of the selections were deep fried, which wasn't too appealing to either one of us, and we had dinner plans that we were looking forward to, decided to just get a sandwich each. Which, for the record, two sandwiches, two waters, after tip - $30. I am a fan of soup and thought about trying a bowl of soup instead of a sandwich, however, my boyfriend had previously had a bowl of the gazpacho that I was eyeballing when he had come in the past and didn't think much of it. He is a fan of gazpacho, a dish that he makes himself once a year or so, and he didn't remember their gazpacho to be anything to write home about or to experience again. He remarked that it seemed overworked. That gazpacho should be just a simple dish made with just a few, nice fresh ingredients, and he didn't remember the gazpacho at this restaurant meeting that standard. No worries though! The pub still had a few selections available - a garden burger, a Portabella burger, and a "Grilled Vegetarian on Rye." which was also the most appealing sounding item to me at the time, cheddar cheese, tomato, onion, fresh spinach and mushrooms on grilled rye. The BF ordered his behemoth sandwich, the Breadboard, hot corned beef, pastrami, Swiss cheese, Cole slaw and Russian dressing on rye. Sounds like meaty heaven. I have to say, that sandwich looked amazing, I wanted to put my face right in it, of course I didn't. Perhaps my disappointment was triggered by my expectations of the sandwich. I loved grilled sandwiches; I love the crunch and texture of a nice buttery rye bread that has been grilled in particular. So, you can imagine my disappointment when upon first bite, the sandwich was already soggy on the bottom. Not just soggy, soaked. The sandwich was hot, and as it was already dripping wet, I supposed that it didn't matter if I waited for it cool down a little. I studied the sandwich a bit, trying to determine why the bottom piece of bread was so grossly wet. I found that the sandwich was comprised of wet, hot cooked spinach, and lava hot tomato that never really cooled down. The wet hot spinach had created the moisture that was derailing my preferred grilled sandwich experience. If you are ok with soggy sandwiches, you might love this one, but I was not in love. I ended up eating it with a knife and fork and avoiding the bottom piece of bread. Even with avoiding the bottom piece I was still generally unimpressed. I think in my mind I had hoped for a grilled cheese, with fresh spinach leaves, tomato and onion added after cooking to cut down on the initial moisture. I could hardly even taste the bread. And the hot vegetables had really lost any flavor. I ate the sandwich because I was hungry, but I was left highly unsatisfied with a typical feeling that the sandwich was thrown together without much consideration to preparation, whether or not it would taste good, or if it could have tasted better. My BF made a comment, after observing my apparent dissatisfaction with my sandwich, comparing the vegetarian fare of most restaurants to that of a kids menu, the option has been provided, and it's not really their fault that you decided to be a kid (or a vegetarian). I really think that leaving the veggies raw, or adding them at the tail end of the cook would have greatly improved this option. Not to be overshadowed by my disappointment, he remembered his sandwich correctly. He very much enjoyed his lunch. He noted that the Cole slaw on the sandwich added a nice sweetness to it and countered the sandwich very nicely. He described the sandwich to be a nice meaty sandwich, that will not disappoint the meat lover. He did remark that the meat, appears to him, to not be prepped in house and is served in thinner slices than he would have preferred, but that is more a reflection on his personal taste, than a real criticism - this place isn't a real deli and according to him it was certainly a better a sandwich than one could find outside of a NY deli. Though the sandwich is piled high with delicious salty meat - even he agreed that the price was bit steep for what it is. Some more positives for the place itself, the chips that were served with the sandwich were made in house and pretty tasty. The service was quick and friendly. It had been awhile since I had been back to Mr Henry's so decided to meet a friend there and drive into the city. The decor is still kind of worn and the tables are way too many for the space. Arrived at 7:45pm and place was fairly dead. Friend chose table and sat against wall but my seat was in the line of traffic, Again, too much furniture for the space, so never really comfortable. Since it was still happy hour I asked for the specials and was given a list of the usual beer mix that most bars have. I was surprised that they had no other specials. Ordered the special soup of the day black bean. When it arrived, it looked like something from a can. No attempt to spruce it up or in presentation. Friend ordered tuna salad sandwich and wanted to replace the slaw and chips with a baked potato. Was told that there a $2 up charge to which he agreed. When his order arrived, his sandwich was on the standard sized sandwich slices bought in the store (think Wonder bread). Potato came on separate plate plain with no condiments or garnish. My Cobb Salad came and it was as advertised with the various ingredients. Presentation was fairly basic. My overall impression is that the owner is just marking time before selling. read more

Called mr. Henrys a week and a half before the reservation date. The owner returned my phone call, Alvin. I needed to plan a work gathering for 55+ people and kids. He was so accommodating and friendly. He was more than happy to give us the whole upstairs and even open the bar up there for drinks. What was the fee? No charge! Everyone showed up over the course of an hour. Food came out quickly and the waitresses were so friendly. They were very sweet with co-workers kids too, interacting and making conversation. It was a big plus that they had kids menus too. London broil is the special on Thursday nights. It got raving reviews! Everyone left happy. It was easy to get to for people mentoring and there was a parking lot across the street behind Citibank. I think everyone agreed we will all be going back again for our next gathering. I have been to Mr. Henry's about 5 times over the past 2 months since moving to the area. My girlfriend and I were lured in by Monday's half price burger night and the friendly atmosphere. The food was solid pub fare. The burgers are above average whereas the fries and chips were somewhat lacking. My first few times to the restaurant we had Mike as our waiter and he was incredibly gracious and did everything he could to make us feel at home. Tonight I went to Mr. Henry's again for the half priced burgers. A large sign out front advertised them without caveat, and me and my friend met my girlfriend who was already seated on the outside patio. We had a few beers and a round of burgers for dinner, but when the bill came we saw it was not half priced. Thinking it was an honest mistake, I asked the waitress why it was not half off when she returned to take my card. I was told then that it was only upstairs that had half off burgers. This didn't sit right with me since I had eaten half off burgers downstairs before. Not in the mood for the argument, I paid the bill and my friends and I began to walk away. At this point, I passed the large sign in the front again that stated without caveat half priced burgers. I decided to go back inside and ask again about my misunderstanding. I asked a waiter if I could speak to a manager and a moment later one appeared. I told her that I had frequented the establishment before and I was confused by what appeared to me to be a change of policy. Before I could finish she cut me off and told me to follow here. She showed me three 8 1/2 x 11 printed out signs that indicated the patio was immune to the half priced burgers. No apology was offered, no "sorry for the confusion I hope you come again". I guess I just don't understand why we weren't informed of the exception when the three of us all ordered burgers and why the staff was so ungracious when I asked for an explanation. Maybe it is because they are sick of people complaining about not getting the special when seated on the patio. This is understandable. But they must also understand that patrons are not going to read every sign in their establishment. It was a typical bait and switch and management was unapologetic about it. read more

Just visited for lunch. While the food was good, the service left a little to be desired. I asked for a iced tea which took over ten minutes to get. My drink finally arrived after it sat in the hot sun ( I watched it). I had a waffle which was really good but for $7.00 I would expected more. I have been here a couple of times since we live right next door. It's just alright. Sometimes I sit right outside with my pup. Yesterday, while passing by on my way home. There was a customer's vespa parked outside and five boys were trying to steal it. I shouted at them to leave it. I called the restaurant to let them inform their customer. However, the guy who picked up the phone responded by saying "Oh okay... well those things are normally rented these days." I corrected him and said it was not a scooter. I always find Mr. Henry's a nice, simple standby when you don't want to get too creative with your dining. They have a nice sandwich selection and I almost always get a burger or a reuben. Their homemade fries and chips are very tasty. Service is friendly a quick, an old standby on Capitol Hill. When I walk in there, I always wonder why they are still open? Yesterday had an opportunity to dine at Mr Henry's. Warning to crab cake lovers. "DO NOT ORDER THE CRAB CAKE FROM THE MENU. It is breaded, taste more like salmon cake, no Ole Bay Seasoning, full of fillers. A waste of good hard earned money. I was truly disappointed. I really thought they would get it right. OMG. They are so close to MARYLAND. I ask the server. How are the crab cakes? I said I live in Maryland. I don't eat crab cakes when I travel because no one does it like Maryland does it. She insist they were good even said she is from New York. What that has to do with a MARYLAND crab cakes behooves me. As I said before AWLFUL. Save your money. And lastly don't order a Arnold Palmer (1/2 tea, 1/2 lemonade. A pure mess again.). Then to add insult to injury a 20 percent tip and 10 percent sales tax. I made a donation yesterday.
