Waitress brought me the wrong burger. I had ordered Swiss and mushroom and she had made me just a regular cheddar burger. I said "No worries,, I'll eat it" and proceeded to. When my check came later SHE HAD NOT CHARGED ME FOR THE BURGER!!!!! THIS is what customer service is all about, and I've worked as a waiter now for about 30 years of my life. La la Land and Lionsgate threw a pop up at Mr. Henry's as Seb's Jazz Club. Not only was it an amazing event with many giveaways they had phenomenal live jazz all night long. And then I find out the Capital Hill Jazz Jam Band plays every week! I will def be back! It was just such a great and fun night. Aaron the lead singer had an amazing voice and he was a hilarious MC for the night. I didn't try much of the food except for the fries, but I liked it. Mr. Henry's has a great speak easy vibe and the tables are seated up close to the band so every seat is a good one. We were seated on the second floor. I can't wait to go back! read more

First time there yesterday. We were promptly greeted by the bartender and given waters (no straws) the waitress then comes over and takes our drink orders and comes back, keep in mind from being in the industry, your attitude and performance plays a huge role in your tip. She couldn't care less. Asked for straws twice and I see her outside just kinda floating around. Had to go ask the bartender for straws. I don't think I saw her again until she brought the bill. The kitchen staff and bartender handled the rest. The food was mediocre at best. Burger was overcooked and fries were undercooked (oil was too hot, crispy brown outside, hard and undercooked inside) Thankfully the rest of the employees picked up her slack or else I'd not come back. I'd like to give it another chance in the distanced future but was highly disappointed. read more

I've been been hungering for a great burger for quite a while, and it seemed that tonight all the stars had aligned to satisfy that desire. Why else would I find a parking space in front of Mr Henry's on Monday - half price burger night?! In honor of self-indulgence, I ordered the Over The Top burger: two 8 ounce burgers, bacon, and cheddar cheese, topped with onion rings atop a brioche bun surrounded by house made chips. I asked for the burger to be cooked medium. The food arrived so quickly that I suspect that the burgers were partially precooked, which is probably why they were so dense and overcooked. I guess its really my own fault for not sending the well done burger back, but I just felt a bit self conscious to do it. The onion rings were excellent but the chips were hard and tasteless. Finally, the brioche bun was not toasted. So it seems that I'll have to continue my quest for a great burger. read more

I've eaten here probably a dozen times, and I've always enjoyed myself. Service staff is always super nice, it's always clean, and the food is consistently pretty good. There are only two things holding them back from 5 stars for me really, and that is: 1) Tiny portions for the price. The entree is always sized fine, but other reviews aren't kidding when they say you're lucky if you even get 5 potato chips. If I'm paying $13 for burger, I want enough food to make me full, and the burger alone isn't cutting it. 2) The coleslaw is an honest to god war crime, fairly sure feeding it to people counts as a breech of the Geneva Convention. The slaw is so wet that none of the veggies stay crisp, and it's frequently almost floating in... Something, and it's also completely unseasoned. The first few times I ate here I actually called my waiter over because I was convinced I was being served old food, only to be told (both times) that that's just how management likes it. The only good thing is that you're served so little of it you don't feel bad leaving it quarantined on one side of the plate. read more

They have outdoor seating which provides great people watching. an indoor area on the first floor, and an upstairs area that has more of a lounge vibe with high top tables close to the bar, and tables for cocktails and food closer to the stage. Stage? Yes- stage because they have some excellent live jazz music including some regulars like the Capitol Hill Jazz Jam Band. On Sundays, they offer a Board Game night where you can bring your favorite board games or learn a new board game from a selection of board games provided from one of their local partners. I really and truly enjoy dining on Pennsylvania Avenue SE, betwixt Capitol South and Eastern Market. I don't know what the neighborhoods are called and I will probably disagree with what Yelp maps say so that is that. With an hour an change before catching a play on H Street, dining in this area won out, over H Street. I wasn't driving so my vote for H Street was overruled. It was off to Mr. Henrys. I really didn't know what to expect from the menu. I was expecting to not been too excited by anything thing. I was a rainy Sunday and as much as I love, hearing and seeing the clouds and rain, I don't like being inside a dark place and Mr. Henry's was on the dim side. So I sat down and began to check out a menu which surprised me. I was going to go meat free and not eat anything boring. Cool beans. I ordered a Black Bean Burger and sat back to enjoy the music. So this is the the bar Roberta Flack honed her craft at. I said that to myself, whilst getting a feel for the place as what I had previously heard was coming back to me. This particular Sunday, the vibe was different. They were playing House and I was loving it all. But I didn't get why they were playing House until looking out the window. There was to be a drag performance that night. So check out the calendar on their website to keep posted. Now, I enjoyed my burger! It was really good. A lot better than I anticipated. I avoided the Slaw and doubled up on the Chips and wish I hadn't. They weren't all that but maybe it was just an off night or just me. I have been going to Mr Henry's for decades having lived on Capitol Hill since the early 70's. It holds a special place in my heart for the ambiance, the people I've known & met there over the years & the staff that I knew in "the old days". The revival of jazz upstairs is a big plus. Unfortunately, the service I've received lately there has been sorely lacking. Many of the good servers are gone & have been replaced by folks who seem untrained & disinterested. I was there twice in a week recently & the service both times was awful: There seemed to be no one in charge on premises, servers talking amongst themselves not paying attention to waving customers at their tables, hot drinks served lukewarm & no offer to warm them up, request to get an item before the dinner entrees, ignored. Upstairs much ado about seeing ID's & vaccination cards before seating but a request to sit at a larger table denied even though the room was a third full. I hear the same from other regulars who are not going back. Wake up management!! read more

We went for a walk with our two dogs and one we were dog sitting and decided to drop in for a late lunch. It is supposed to be dog friendly. For 3:30 on Memorial Day, it was busy. After waiting 10 minutes, we sat ourselves at the very end of the patio so we would not be in the way even though we were next to a noisy kitchen fan. It was a pleasant day and we were in no hurry. We had a nice meal at a neighborhood place but because one of the waiters was overwhelmed it turned into a bit of an unpleasant experience. The worst part was when he arrived with the appetizers for the table next to us -- they arrived with their dog as we finished our meal -- and the waiter used profanity, saying "I'm f@€£ng sick of this." We were done eating so my wife got up and walked home alone while I paid for the check. I understand a bad day but the language was uncalled for. read more

I'm a DC gal and I have been going to Henry's for EVVVvvvvver, as in 20 years. It really is a neighborhood pub and the regulars and the staff are like one great big crazy family. If you are new to the area and sit at the bar, and are willing to put down your cell for more than 45 seconds (after you check-in of course) and make eye contact, then bartender or the regulars will talk to you and make you feel welcome. Over the years the menu has been tweaked here and there but the food is standard American bar food, large portions, and consistent quality. The nightly specials are a great bargain. Chuck, bartender extraordinaire serves up high octane libations and the awesome wait staff will make sure you don't go thirsty or hungry. The regular burgers are great, the veggie burgers are flavorful and the turkey burgers are moist and delicious. Lots of people love the buffalo chicken wings and the fried chicken (not my thing, I can't deal with bones in my food) but judging by the number of plates that come out of the kitchen, and the pile of perfectly cleaned bones some of my friends leave on their plates, they must be doing something right. If you want a big ol' plate of comfort, go on a Wednesday for meatloaf night, Marta's homemade meatloaf is served up with mashed potatoes, gravy and a vegetable (usually broccoli). I would make myself a bed of it if I could, it's just that good. The salads need a little help but they are fine in a very retro kind of way, the spinach salad is the best of the bunch. The patio is cool, and the tables are nice but I always sit at the bar, because that's where all the fun takes place. read more

Do not eat here! i found blood on the paper my onion rings were served in! the server was initially rude until I showed him the blood that was served with my food. He tried to tell me it was ketchup, until I explained to him that I had a family full of nurses--all of which told me to return the food because it was blood after I sent them a pic message. I tried to give them the benefit of a doubt, I tested other liquids like ketchup and salsa on the same wrapper but they both dried too clear and did not match the darker stain. I also had to get my own refill. Other people at my table paid over $2 for a plastic cup of soda and did not receive a refill. And he refused to take our order initially because we weren't ready when he was. horrible experience. :( read more

This place is ALWAYS jumpin', so we decided to check it out. The daily Happy Hour specials and good Foursquare reviews made us wanna quickly grab a seat. WE: 1/2 price wings. Decent appetizer with a little spice. ME: BLT with fries (good, but at $3.95 for a 1/2 order, I expected a little more than 1/2 of a 1/2, minus 5!) My Shirley Temple was decent. HE: Mexi-cali burger. Great guac. Good toppings. Bland burger. The warm, damn-near room temperature craft beer was a blow. That was a complete turn-off for that resident beer snob of mine. For $40+, we walked away wondering where all the money went. The atmosphere is cool and pet-friendly, but we can find that almost anywhere in the city -- especially during this time of year. On mondays, Mr Henry's is the place to be, whether with a huge party to overtake the upstairs or with a date to enjoy a 1-1 meal while overseeing the capital. Everyone ordered a different burger, but me, being a fan of bbq sauce, ventured fourth and ordered the bbq burger, medium, with sauteed onions. Funny how the menu reads sauteed but the servers refer to them as grilled. to each his own! Everyone else's burger came out medium EXCEPT mine (what a shame right), but even despite that, the burger still tasted good! Ordering the onion rings was a plus, bc it was large enough and maintained its form so that I could place it within the burger - more CRUNCH! Now, how can a place like this survive with half priced burgers on mondays?! the super high prices of everything else! the orange juice is more than half the price of the burger! A friend said that I must visit Mr. Henry's because she has been going for many years and it was wonderful, so I finally took her advice and accompanied her to Mr. Henry's. She was right, this place is wonderful and I enjoyed just about everything about my visit. I have been told this is not a gay bar but many of the clientele and staff appear to be gay, doesn't make a difference either way because everyone both staff and customers are friendly and accommodating. But if you're uptight or uncomfortable around a diverse crowd, Mr. Henry's probably isn't the place for you. I went on a Friday night to try their Friday chicken special, unfortunately I had some nasal congestion and my sense of taste was slightly off but I really enjoyed the chicken and recommend it. The chicken was breaded nicely and was moist and tasteful. The portions is huge, it is a half a bird so plenty for one person or even good for sharing. I had two of the strongest drinks I have ever had in any establishment while there, more than likely because I was there with my friend who appeared to be friends with the bartender and almost every other person in the place. The decor is cool, lots of cool posters and other little funny signs or plaques adorn the walls. Place is some and can get tight when it is full but that just adds to the neighborhood style vibe. Definitely worth a future visit from me and a visit for anyone looking for a close knit neighborhood style place. read more

My wife and I have been going to Mr. Henry's for about a year now. We were ecstatic when we discovered it during Capital Jazz Fest. Keep in mind we have only been for the upstairs jazz performances on Friday and Saturday nights. We love jazz and they certainly book talent. However, the food and service are enough for us to keep coming back. Now this isn't any fancy club/lounge. It's a divey neighborhood gem which is why I love it. Estrella, the waitress upstairs, is wonderful, attentive, and accommodating. The combination of food, service, atmosphere, and jazz keeps us going back! read more

My friends and I came there for Boozy Game night event. They had board game themed drinks with reasonable prices and a kick! The upper room are well lighted, thanks to the windows bringing in all the sunlight. The chili nacho had that strong bean flavor, which was balanced out with smoldering cheese, jalapeno slices, soft and sweet onion. The tortilla chips remain crispy in this heap of gooey heaven. I would order this again. The staff was generous, I mistook a busboy for a server, but he was happy to take my order. Huge plus The event was hosted by Labyrinth, a friendly local game store. They brought demo games over to the bar, with their staff ready at arm to teach you and your friends. I appreciate seeing both of my favorite things merging in a wonderful event with my friends. After a tough day I was heading somewhere else and was piqued with interest and headed in and was extremely happy with my choice of Mr Henry's. The staff very so overwhelmingly nice and accommodating. I showed up with luggage and all and they helped me to a quiet spot out of the way and listened to my rambling. They even pointed out some pictures of the first Miss America whose family dines there (I was relating my experience at Miss America). I was walking around and saw the outdoor seating at this place so I decided to stop. It looks like a traditional pub with dark wood, a careworn barn, very cozy inside. There is outside seating where I sat. It runs the length of the restaurant with small tables along the building wall and larger tables (4 ppl) along the railing. Crowd outside was friendly and the service was prompt. I had a blackened burger with chips. The burger was tasty and the chips were wonderful, I just wish I had more chips instead of literally nine. I liked this place, I am a sucker for outside seating. Would I drive/Metro across town to eat here? Probably not. If I'm in the neighborhood again, would I eat here again? Sure. read more

A really nice comfy simple pub, with some very nice unexpected surprises. Great atmosphere of old wood that adores the bars walls and interior, with a neat take on pictures and photos mostly of flapper girls from the 20s and 30s. Some are elegantly dressed, some show some skin, but it creates an old school ambience that is real inviting. The small 2 person wood booth by the bar downstairs is a neat spot that I dig. Lots of regulars at this place, quite a hint of character. Tap list is unfortunately a bit ordinary, some cans make it only slightly interesting on the beer side, but the food is a big surprise. The simple pub and bar food is actually a step up than the average, definitely go for crab items here, and the burgers are real solid too. The winner though is the homemade fries. At a dollar extra, these are worth it, you want them trust me. Service is also fantastic, they will take care of you here. Upstairs is a little more classy, nicer looking, a little less broken in looking. Upstairs is where the music acts are. A good spot to see a small act, however when packed the crowd is noisy, even if it's people in the back talking away while the show is going on. Things could be worse. Real neat unique joint. Gay friendly. Hope to come back for a future show and definitely a bite. Also look for the daily specials, Mondays I think are half price burger night, which in most cases would be dangerous for our hero. read more
