This Japanese place has existed in this spot in High Point for basically as long as I have, but I had never ever been before until now. I happened to have reason to be in the shopping center one fateful day, and was hungry to boot. So I decided, I should stop in, if for nothing else, just to say I put it through it's paces. Inside, well, I kind of found what I expected. A well-worn restaurant, but importantly, very clean. Much of the decor has faded over time, but I don't see much reason to improve it. Looking into the kitchen, and just observing interactions, I would wager the same husband and wife combination have owned it the entire time. Though everything is dated, I do love that you can fully see the entire kitchen and sushi bar. I went for lunch, but was surprised there was not a lunch special menu of any kind. Standard in this area, you would usually find that. Same menu all day here. I ordered chicken yakisoba and a yellowfin scallion maki roll. Service was excellent, attentive but not overly so. You can tell the experience, as the same lady was working the whole place (about 8 tables occupied). My sushi roll came out first, no complaints. Fresh yellowfin tuna, the inclusion of scallions was a nice touch both for taste and texture. Appropriate amount of rice. This was great, maybe next time I will just go for sushi. My chicken yakisoba was a good portion, but I found it a bit bland generally. I asked for some ginger sauce to dip it in, and that helped a lot, but on its own I would have liked more flavor kick. The chicken however was cooked well, not dry at all. Overall, this place is not very close to me, but if in the area I would come again. We stopped here for lunch. It was fairly busy but food came quickly. I got teriyaki Salmon and a sushi roll with hot green tea. It wasn't bad. The items seem a little limited. We did have to ask twice for condiments but overall Shogun was solid. read more

Shogun is one of those places I used to go with my friends several times a month back in high school, quite a long time ago. And like many things from that era in life, it drifted away with a memory and I forgot about it. Tonight, I had a craving for Japanese food but it was 8:45pm on a Monday night and most of the area establishments were closed or about to close. With a closing time of 9:30pm, we were able to get here just in time to have a quick dinner. Compared to two decades ago, the ambiance appears unchanged. The lighting is fairly dim, the decor washed out and dingy, the same old curtains hanging. There is a decent amount of seating and the kitchen area is open. The staff were all very friendly, and the service was fast. I was also happy to see a 97/100 food grade, because you want a clean establishment if you're going to order sushi (or anything, really!) I ordered a few sushi items (Spicy Tuna Roll, Kamikaze roll, and Mackerel Nigiri). They were all presented together on a plate and looked nice. My wife got the teriyaki chicken meal, and we both had a bowl of miso soup. Here, though, I have to say I was disappointed. While it was fast, hot, and fresh, the food all seemed bland. The sushi had little flavor, even the mackerel which normally has a pretty distinct taste. The fried rice looked the part, but didn't have much flavor. The teriyaki chicken was a generous portion and had a decent tasting sauce, but the underlying chicken was a bit tough. I want to give benefit of the doubt that it was close to closing time and they might not have been at their best, though there is a review with a similar experience from last month. It wasn't necessarily a bad experience, but it was pretty forgettable. This meal served the goal tonight and we left with full bellies at a reasonable price, but I don't think I'd go out of my way to come back. read more

My husband and I have been eating here for years. We recently started getting the sashimi as well. It's important to note that this isn't a high end sushi restaurant so the selection isn't as big. We always get a squid salad and the sashimi regular. It's very good for the price. The squid salad is actually better here than at our favorite sushi restaurant. The shrimp were without seasoning. The vegetables were over done and i think still had dirt from not being rinsed properly. High Point is home to a surprising number of Japanese eateries, several of which begin with S (Shogun, Sake, Shinko Grill, etc.). Given this near-ubiquity, any one of them would have to be especially good or especially bad to stand out. Shogun is neither though it does offer decent food at reasonable prices. Housed betwixt a T-Mobile and a Mario's Pizza, Shogun is easy to miss from the outside. The inside does no more to command attention. It's dated and dimly lit though clean and presentable, and sushi bar seating exists as an option if tables fill up. Shogun's menu rounds up the usual suspects: miso, gyoza, tempura, yakisoba, udon, hibachi dishes, and sushi (sashimi, nigiri, and a decent assortment of rolls). If you are in search of novelty fusion, you have come to the wrong place. My wife and I opted for a char-grilled steak and a house udon (vegetables, shrimp, scallions, and chicken) respectively. The steak was marinated in a pineapple-ginger-soy combination that lent plenty of flavor, was cooked to order, and came with an appealing assortment of vegetables. The udon was comfortingly hot on a cold day though the broth was very mild and the dish was light on shrimp. Pricing left no room for complaint: both dishes were $9.95 and provided a lot of food for the money. The proprietress was very nice though not particularly easy to understand. Shogun isn't somewhere one should go out of the way to visit, but for those in the area, it's a worthy lunch option. read more

I visited here tonight for their all you can eat sushi, but instead of sushi they served rice balls with a small amount of fish on top. Their menu stated that they charge $1 per piece if you don't finish your food, specifically including rice, but they waived that fee when I complained. I really love this local Japanese restaurant. I frequent Shogun at least once a week. It's a "fast food" type of Japanese restaurant, i.e. they don't cook in front of you. However, the quality is amazing and the prices can't be beaten. A plate of hibachi chicken with rice, veggie, and a side salad or soup is $6.95 I believe and that's just unheard of. The meat is very tender and they give you ample amounts of food. They also have hibachi fish (probably tilapia) and it's also amazing. Very different from the typical chicken, steak or shrimp. It's my husbands favorite! They also have a choice for teriyaki, chargrilled meats, udon, and lots of sushi. Their sushi is quite incredible and the price tags are unbelievable. You would pay $12 for a roll that you can get at shogun for $7. And the quality is on point. I love the Hawaiian roll for a treat. The wait staff is always kind, but not overly warm. They do get the job done and have yet to make a mistake. Come for a visit for some fast, but delicious Japanese food and sushi. You'll leave happy, full and save some cash! read more

(Warning: I am Asian and I know Asian food). This is one of my favorite restaurants in High Point and GSO area. It helps to have a realistic expectation when you go here: this is NOT a gourmet Japanese restaurant with the best sushi in town. I come here for a quick lunch because of the value (taste vs price). The food is very satisfying if you know what to order and the staffs are very friendly. I like having a restaurant like this in my neighborhood. Recently visited Shogun for lunch at about 11:20, close to when they opened. There weren't many customers when we first arrived, so our food was ready in 10-15 minutes. My boyfriend and I ordered the vegetable udon and Shogun Special Beef. Vegetable udon was mainly mushrooms, cabbage and broccoli but pretty mild in flavor (not a bad point though). Shogun Special Beef was debatable because the beef was a little overcooked but overall tasty. We also had the fried green tea ice cream which was small but fulfilling for the end of the meal. More and more customers came for a small lunch rush, but our server was still attentive and got us our dessert and bill faster than expected. Major points: Attentive and overall satisfying service; wait time was tolerable and nothing to complain about; can't brag about the decor and lighting too much, but simple enough to the eyes. It was not good. it tasted bland and not fresh. I also did not like the Hibachi Steak platter. The fried rice was very bland and it had no eggs, vegetables or anything in it except a bit of soy sauce for color. vegetables were soggy and tasteless. steak was well cooked but needed seasoning. My salad with ginger dressing was just lettuce with slops of mushed ginger over it. My friend ordered the seafood soup and he said that the broth was pretty good. looked ok. I won't be returning or recommending this place the prices were great but the food was terrible. The water is from the tap and it tasted like metal in a glass. read more

From the outside its definitely not much. Inside is also on the smaller side. Not super bright but not dim. Everything was clean looking on my visit. Service was good. An older oriental lady took great care of us getting us what we needed. Simple one page menu with the usual grilled items, and standard tempura. 1 large page of sushi. I had the hibachi steak, with a large order of sushi. The steak was not what I expected. It was cooked to order. But it was in some kind of brown gravy?? It tasted more like beef stew than grilled steak!! Just not at all what I wanted. The grilled veggies were nice and so was the fried rice. Their white sauce is very watery. The flavor was ok, but this stuff is thin and hard to use. The house salad was some lettuce and few carrot shavings with orange ginger sauce. This dressing was also strange to me. Again it tasted ok but it was lumpy and like baby food! On to the sushi. Philly roll with smoked salmon. A little fishy tasting but ok. California roll was good. Over all I would eat here again, there was nothing wrong with it, but its definitely got its quirks. Skip the steak. The prices were great. Very reasonable. OK with me. read more

The food actually isn't bad. But I come from LA , so I have high sushi standards. I'm not planning on coming back here. You walk in and there is a very bad chemical smell that the staff is oblivious to, it is unappetizing to say the least. I order seared salmon belly sushi which they say they know what this is. Great place! Not a fancy place but nice and quaint. Food is always fresh. Service is good. I go for the "all you can eat" sushi. I know, I know, all you can eat? It is al a carte. A specific menu with a list of item you can order all you want for one price. Select some sushi, turn in the order and they make it and bring it to you. Turn in as many slips as you want. Just make sure you eat it all!! If you leave any, they will charge you $1 a piece. The habachi is always good. And the pricing is resonable. read more

A decent sushi place without all the bells and whistles served us amazing house salad, crispy and fresh edamame, and delicious vegetable Yakisoba and shrimp Hibatchi. Found this little restaurant on Yelp! I ordered take-out and with a very patient girl taking my order. The order was prepared quickly and accurately. While waiting I looked around the restaurant - it was clean and nicely decorated. The lighting is incandescent cans instead of fluorescent panels. This with the decor makes for an inviting dining area. The food was prepared correctly and tasted great! I will definitely be going back real soon! read more

Had to look very closely at pad, (despite having glasses), I had to read back to her what I wanted (very slowly), and she had to put her pad onto the table to write. Told us she was new, so bear with her, like 4 times. Very unprofessional. Food was pretty bad. Where do I start?! First of all, when I walked in someone from that back hollers at me was I there for a carry-out? Uh no, I would like to dine in. Again, hollering from the back just pick a table anywhere. So I take a seat by the grill that was separated by glass and could watch the cook. The waitress came and took my order and it didn't take me long to realize that apparently she was the only one there taking orders given the fact that she was literally running back and forth all the while some girl is standing with her arms crossed by the cook just watching (who had his chef's coat unbuttoned/untied with just a t-shirt underneath, very unprofessional!). Not sure what she was supposed to be doing unless she was in training, just felt like she could have been helping out the waitress that was trying her best to accommodate dine-in and carryout customers. Okay, so I get my salad or at least an attempt to impersonate a salad. This was literally just lettuce with some kind of orange globs of pasty goo that was supposed to be ginger dressing. And since they don't offer soup and salad together with a dinner entree (which almost every other Japanese restaurant does), this cost me an additional $2, very disappointing. I get my entree and have to say (the reason for the 2 stars instead of 1), the steak and chicken was quite good except for the ginger sauce that I got with it. It was nothing more than a dark watery concoction that I think was poured over some ginger root to give it flavor. I think I would have been better off with just some soy sauce, had the same consistency. I finish up and go to pay, this cost me $28 and some change, granted I had 2 beers which cost over $3.50 each but having to add the salad and noodles as sides, again a standard at most Japanese restaurants, this was rather costly for what I got. The waitress was very nice and tried her best to take care of the customers. They really need a backup plan for when a waitress doesn't show up, like the "watcher" by the cook could step in and help. With all the Japanese restaurants to choose from in the High Point and surrounding areas, this will not be a place I will return to. Not sure why all the good reviews (which was the reason I went in the first place), maybe it's the sushi, which I'm not a fan of, it's overrated and overpriced (just my opinion). Perhaps they haven't tried other places to find out what is really good Japanese food with authentic dressings and sauces. read more

The staff was very nice. The place waa empty but probably because they close at 2.30 before reopening at 5. Please dont ask me what rolls I ordered but I can say they were very good. The food came out quickly. The restaurant is clean with minimal decor. Not the best sushi ive had so they get 4 stars but certainly not the worst. I would come here again. read more
