    Smoky tempura mushroom soup. Mmmmm
    Lynn L.

This place is a little gem in High Point! The hibachi was great! Tried the mushroom soup with the little crunchy tempura thingies. They had this awesome smoky taste to them. It was delightful! The tea was fantastic! The service was also amazing and you can watch them cook your food. Love it. Great spot for lunch or dinner.

    Shrimp Yakisoba with no vegetables

My husband and I have been eating here for years. We recently started getting the sashimi as well. It's important to note that this isn't a high end sushi restaurant so the selection isn't as big. We always get a squid salad and the sashimi regular. It's very good for the price. The squid salad is actually better here than at our favorite sushi restaurant. My husband got the steak and shrimp and I got the shrimp yakisoba noodles with no vegetables. Everything was delicious and our waitress was on point.

    Exactly what it was. Trash.

They were very friendly and the restaurant is decorated in a terrific dream of Japanese culture. I had Yakisoba and mochi ice cream. The yakisoba was disgusting. The portion was small. The shrimp were without seasoning. The vegetables were over done and i think still had dirt from not being rinsed properly. The mochi was dry, tasteless, and tasted like the wrong kind of flour was used. I went in with high hopes. I wish i had gone to a mall food court instead.

High Point is home to a surprising number of Japanese eateries, several of which begin with S (Shogun, Sake, Shinko Grill, etc.). Given this near-ubiquity, any one of them would have to be especially good or especially bad to stand out. Shogun is neither though it does offer decent food at reasonable prices. Housed betwixt a T-Mobile and a Mario's Pizza, Shogun is easy to miss from the outside. The inside does no more to command attention. It's dated and dimly lit though clean and presentable, and sushi bar seating exists as an option if tables fill up. Shogun's menu rounds up the usual suspects: miso, gyoza, tempura, yakisoba, udon, hibachi dishes, and sushi (sashimi, nigiri, and a decent assortment of rolls). If you are in search of novelty fusion, you have come to the wrong place. My wife and I opted for a char-grilled steak and a house udon (vegetables, shrimp, scallions, and chicken) respectively. The steak was marinated in a pineapple-ginger-soy combination that lent plenty of flavor, was cooked to order, and came with an appealing assortment of vegetables. The udon was comfortingly hot on a cold day though the broth was very mild and the dish was light on shrimp. Pricing left no room for complaint: both dishes were $9.95 and provided a lot of food for the money. The proprietress was very nice though not particularly easy to understand. Shogun isn't somewhere one should go out of the way to visit, but for those in the area, it's a worthy lunch option.

I ordered sushi, not rice balls
    Mr. H.

I visited here tonight for their all you can eat sushi, but instead of sushi they served rice balls with a small amount of fish on top. Their menu stated that they charge $1 per piece if you don't finish your food, specifically including rice, but they waived that fee when I complained. I'll stick to other all you can eat sushi restaurants that don't try to scam their customers.

    Shogun Special Beef

Recently visited Shogun for lunch at about 11:20, close to when they opened. There weren't many customers when we first arrived, so our food was ready in 10-15 minutes. My boyfriend and I ordered the vegetable udon and Shogun Special Beef. Vegetable udon was mainly mushrooms, cabbage and broccoli but pretty mild in flavor (not a bad point though). Shogun Special Beef was debatable because the beef was a little overcooked but overall tasty. We also had the fried green tea ice cream which was small but fulfilling for the end of the meal. More and more customers came for a small lunch rush, but our server was still attentive and got us our dessert and bill faster than expected. Major points: Attentive and overall satisfying service; wait time was tolerable and nothing to complain about; can't brag about the decor and lighting too much, but simple enough to the eyes. I'd definitely go back when I'm in the area.

We didn't have reservations but were seated right away, which made for an easy start to the evening. The space has a modern, relaxed vibe that feels perfect for a casual dinner or drinks. We started with the Lobster Nachos, which were a fun twist since they're made with crispy potato wedges instead of chips. They were topped with lobster, bacon, scallions, and a creamy sauce: rich, indulgent, and great for sharing. For the main dish, I had the Ribeye steak with a side of cauliflower mash. The steak had a nice sear and great flavor, and the cauliflower mash was smooth, creamy and delicious, making it a great alternative to traditional mashed potatoes. A solid first visit with flavorful dishes and a welcoming atmosphere. Earl's Landing is a great new addition to the downtown High Point dining scene, and I'm looking forward to coming back to try more of the menu. Try the Lobster Nachos if you want something unique to share, they're a standout starter.

It closed in early February for what were supposed to be renovations, only to reopen months later with a new name and a new concept, trading slightly upscale Southern for more upscale Italian. In some regards, this makes sense - it fills a void created by the closure of Lulu and Blu - but in other ways, it's a massive gamble. My wife and I went for our anniversary dinner, and while it was an overall pleasant experience, it also made us miss Magnolia. The higher price point is the chief culprit. Otto and Blue offers pastas in the $20s and entrees starting in the $30s, bread and olive oil not included. While we were celebrating an occasion that merited such a splurge, it's hard to imagine the restaurant remaining competitive at those prices once the sheen of newness wears off. Look past that, however, and Otto and Blue shines in both ambiance and service. It's classy without being stuffy, and the dark turquoise tones suit it well. Allison, a Magnolia Blue mainstay, was personable and attentive and provided excellent service throughout the meal. Otto and Blue's menu offers apps, salads, pastas, and entrees. It's predominantly Italian albeit with a few options for the steak-and-potatoes crowd. The dishes range from recognizably classic (rigatoni Bolognese) to conspicuously elevated (halibut piccatta). After mulling over several offerings, we went with the bread service, tagliatelle, and duck cacciatore. The food ranged from fairly good to outstanding. While $9 for bread is a tough pill to swallow, they executed it as well as they possibly could have: a hot, fresh ciabatta with tasty herb butter, olive relish, and a quality olive oil-balsamic combo as accompaniments. The cacciatore boasted a pair of duck legs confit, and while I'm usually no fan of dark meat poultry, these were prepared well with crispy skin and plenty of meat. For a typically hearty dish, the sauce seemed light (and a bit subdued), but that could be a consequence of serving atop polenta (more absorbent) rather than pasta. Speaking of pastas and sauces, the tagliatelle hit a nice balance of creamy and zesty without swimming in its white wine lemon sauce. Surprisingly, the highlight of the meal ended up being the dessert that Otto and Blue kindly offered as an anniversary gift. A scoop of vanilla bean gelato came adorned with a Biscoff cookie, a drizzle of olive oil, and a dash of salt. If salt and especially olive oil on ice cream seem vaguely blasphemous, don't knock it until you try it. Each bite was thoroughly delicious. It's a given that good food doesn't come cheap, but even so, Otto and Blue has no margin for error to justify what it charges. On food alone, it was close but not quite there. However, the overall experience made it worthwhile, and I have no regrets about dining here.

I don't know if the ownership has changed or if they just made some decisions to alter things, but either way it changes our opinion of the place. First and most important for us, they used to be the only place we were aware of in NC to get Gluten Free Crab Cakes which was a major reason we frequented Sammy G's. That has apparently changed and the new Gluten Free menu is basically just the meats menu which is a real shame. It looks like they have made some other small changes to the regular menu as well, none of those were all that concerning but the loss of this GF treat is a real blow for us. If you are a celiac and found reviews about the GF crab cakes, please be aware they appear to be gone now. Additionally, the prices across the menu seem to have gone up by a few dollars. When you consider that Sammy G's was never a cheap place to eat, and given the state of the economy these days, that actually does come out to a noticeable change and makes it harder to justify going. However, with the loss of the old GF options, it's unlikely we'll come back anywhere near as often as we used to.

It's hidden away off the main stretch, but easy to get to with parking on-site. When we arrived at 5pm, the restaurant was fairly empty and they were already set up and waiting for our group reservation. We were greeted by Freya, who had a great personality and provided fantastic service all evening while we were there. Can't speak highly enough of her! They have a comprehensive wine menu and a full bar. I started with a Lemon Drop Martini which was delicious, and later had a glass of Merlot as well which was tasty as well. They had warm fresh bread on the table with butter which was great since we were all very hungry. For my meal, I ordered the Halibut Large Plate. This was a lightly crisp blackened piece of Halibut topped with lump grab and a sauce, then served atop a piece of andouille sausage, asparagus, and creamy grits. There were SO MANY flavors perfectly balanced together here with a variety of textures to enjoy as well. I have nothing but good things to say about this. Blue Water Grille is fairly expensive and not somewhere you would come regularly, but for a special outing or a date night it is a great treat. The menu is seafood heavy and non-seafood items also pack a lot of flavor, so be aware that there are limited options for that picky eater in your party who perhaps wants a more plain chicken dish. As an aside - Someone in my party got the Mac & Cheese small plate and it looked fantastic. Definitely something I'm going to order next time!

Honestly, it keeps bringing us back. The flavors are incredible. It has feta, mozzarella, topped with organic greens, shaved onions, tossed in a lemon/dijon dressing with shaved parmesan. It's a flavor bomb in the mouth. The meatloaf, is to die for. If you're a meatloaf eater this is for you. It's so tender and juicy and perfectly seasoned. Melts in your mouth and the sauce on top is the perfect blend of sweet and savory to top it off. For my two sides this time I chose the fried brussels sprouts and the greens.
