Located in a difficult to park strip mall one finds Mr Pollo with a long line of hungry customers. A large sign tells you not to take a table until you order because the place is generally packed. Large signs with colorful pictures display the food, on the left is traditional chicken dishes and the right are Peruvian dishes with the native names. The cost for most food items if very fair as they come with sides and a medium drink. The ordering area is cluttered and the most secret of sauces are located on the right side of the ordering area. The sauces are unique, a light green, garlicky creamy sauce that most customers splash on everything, while the bright - hot- sauce is used with more caution. There is a contain of an oily concoction with a green sediment floating on top - it is baffling to look at, but very tasty....There is not one way to use these sauces as everyone uses them to their choosing. The chicken is delicious and tossed green salad is great, the fries tend to be a bit cool, with pinto beans served very hot. Today was my first time at Mr. Pollo, yelp showed good reviews so I decided to take the drive to Covina. I was craving Peruvian food and instead of driving to Gardena for Pollo Inka or South El Monte for Pollo Mania I figured I'd find a closer place to my home. As I waited patiently I kept seeing flames more than 2ft flames towering over the wok like pan that was being used to do the cooking. When I finally got home with my food I was very disappointed with the pollo saltado as it wasn't good and had an odd flavor. Could it be that it was somewhat burned? . The sauce at the bottom of the container was a lot darker than normal and the cooked chicken and fries were also very dark in color... I even found a piece of lomo mixed in with my pollo . I LOVE the green sauce I get at Pollo Inka in Gardena and can finish a whole bottle as I enjoy my meal, I filled 3 little containers of Mr. Pollo's green sauce and 1 of the chimichurri. Their green sauce tasted bad, it has a bitter taste. . I noticed after pouring it over my rice there were little black specks that could have been pepper? Whatever it has was Not a good idea! The chimichurri was good. I ordered a large order of platano s fritos and they were very oily, I was only able to eat two very small pieces. The maracaya was good and so were the alfajores. The food: The food here is very good. The chicken, lomo and sauces are addictive. Now for why the 1 star... Wait time: They always run out of chicken and phone orders typically take 1 hour, so if you all of a sudden have a craving for mr pollo, you are probably going to want to let that craving pass. They have been in business for a long time and I find it hard to believe they cannot judge how many chickens to cook. And it's not only the chickens. If you want a lomo during the rush, they will tell you it will be an hour. Waiting area: There isn't one. It's so awkward in the dining area when you are waiting for your order. Now imagine if your order is going to take an hour. The dining area is tight to begin with, but now add in the customers waiting for their orders. Most people wait outside, which sucks on cold nights. The worst part is that if you wait outside, they don't bring your order to you. You have to keep weaving the traffic in the restaurant to check on your order. Customer service: The service is lacking. They don't pick up the phone. Sometimes you wonder if they went out of business because of the message you receive when they don't pick up. You have to try for 10+ minutes before someone finally picks up. When they do pick up, they tell you all orders are going to take an hour. I usually get the sense that they want me to hang up and not place an order. I guess they don't need the business. So overall, the food is good but you need to have a lot of patience. If you are impatient, do not bother coming here, you will just get pissed off and the food will not be good enough to overcome your anger. read more

I don't know where to start with this lol. In reality this place does have some great food, which is what really matters at the end of the day, right? I cannot complain about how great the rotisserie chicken is! I'd rather drive 40 minutes out of my way to have this chicken rather than going to Costco across the street. The food overall is awesome, but I do have problem with one thing...and I think most people will agree with me on this... It was my second time at this place and it was late Saturday afternoon before the dinner rush. One thing I noticed was there were a lot, I mean a lot of to-go orders and their phone was ringing off the hook. At the same time I saw dine-in patrons frustrated that their food wasn't ready. There's a small chalk board at the front counter that shows the wait time for chicken and plate dishes, interesting, right? The place was quickly filling up and patrons just kept waiting and waiting for their food. Sure enough it took at least 45 minutes to get our food...definitely worth the wait, but for this long? Yes, I do understand that it's all fresh made to order, but this is a hole-in-the-wall and for us to wait this long for food is just isn't right. My 1 year old got fussy and had to walk out because it was getting to damn hot inside. People needed to use the restroom and eventually found out that patrons needed to walk through the kitchen to use it...this is where our food is being prepared! Okay, let me get to the point here...I think it's time this owner realizes that he/she needs a bigger spot...a bigger restaurant to not only please the dine-in patron, but to make even more business!!! C'mon man...what the hell are you waiting for?!?! I mean...do you realize how much more business you can have if you had an expanded restaurant? People at home know how busy your place gets and therefore they go eat somewhere else! I'm just saying! Sadly, I have to give it a one star. I meet a group of friends here for lunch whenever we can get together because we love the food. The service and food are usually on point. Today I found two hairs in my salad. I did not want another salad (I didn't even take my first bite). I let the cashier know right away. She let the owner know. He didn't have the courtesy to come and apologize. I ordered a different side. He charged me and never came back to see how I was doing. The side I ordered was cold. Today after church I told the family to meet up to eat at this place. My brother and mother walked in places an order and sat down n reserved me a seat till i got there to sit and eat. Another customer came ordered and was directed by the staff to take the seat being saved for me. They took our table and seats. Not just the seat.the manager did nothing he even served others before us,because we were the only white family there they didn't care to serve us ,we paid for food in cash and we were nice to them. If i could have i would give them zero stars rating. This is a local place to me and it is one of the best places for Peruvian food. I always order to go since it can be difficult to get a table as they are quite popular!! And rightly so for those in the know about Peruvian menus. I prefer the tallarin saltado or the chaufa de arroz. Neither dish is ever a disappointment. And the aji green sauce is so hard to resist. Tried this place out after watching it on the channel 5 news. Was not sure what to expect. This place is too small for the crowd it attracts. The food was freshly made and the taste was awesome. I took my food to go because there was no place to sit. Dont forget to try the green chilu sauce. It is so good, however they can bring down the spicy part of it down a notch or two.
