We have had more than our fair share of price gouging from Mr. Rooter over the years. Their technicians are not good for much other than drain cleaning. They don't really respond to emergencies. They only do the work they feel like doing. They just tried to charge me $800 to hook up a washer/dryer, which is pretty much criminal for a 15-minute job. Any other local company is better. Our kitchen sink did not drain not matter what we tried to clear it. It was Sunday morning and I called Mr. Rooter. They said that a technician would be out between 10:00am and 12:00pm. These guys sent out someone who could not figure out where the clog was coming from... after finally unclogging and a $734.88 bill later Could have replaced my plumbing for that!!! I'll echo what most other reviews say about Mr. Rooter Santa Cruz: they're courteous, professional, and great at what they do. When my water heater started leaking they sent someone out at 6pm, but because it wasn't 100% obvious that the problem was the water heater unit and not the water line in the wall, he suggested waiting a night. There was no charge for this initial investigation which impressed me. By the next day is was clear that it was indeed the water heater that was leaking and needed replacement. Jesus, the technician, was a fantastic communicator and he got the job done quick, about 2.5 hours. What left me with a bitter taste in my mouth was the cost. All told, the installed water heater cost about $2200 (minus the $30 Yelp discount! haha). Ouch. The exact same model water heater is available online for $550-650. An equivalent unit at Home Depot (same capacity, same warranty) is $409. Even when you consider tax, 3.5 hours labor (which includes the "free" diagnostic visit), and disposal, there's no getting around the fact that Mr. Rooter is overcharging by an INSANE amount. Of course, I'm partly to blame. I should have price compared but having never bought a water heater before I just assumed that they actually cost this much. Lesson learned. Besides the cost, I was happy enough with Mr Rooter that I'll most likely use them again in the future, but I'll consider buying expensive parts myself. read more

Everything was backed up in our mobile home bathrooms (2) even shower drain,Kitchen,laundary rm drain for a week after trying everything the internet advised us to do nothing was working we had to turn off all water to our home. For a main drain clean-out that may need to be repeated perhaps once or twice a year, I use Mr. Rooter (476-2190 in Santa Cruz.) This is a locally-owned franchise covering the Santa Cruz and Watsonville areas, employing about 20 people. They charge about the same as everyone else... BUT they have a written guarantee of no charge for a second visit... and they do a video inspection of the drain all the way out to the municipal sewer line at no additional charge. This was all confirmed by me this morning. I had them out last year for a line blockage. I normally look for small, independent workers, but, at the time, they were the only ones who answered the phone with a live person and had a service tech available. I did not know about the guarantee when I called back then, but it was a pleasant surprise to get it when the job was finished. Saturday night at 9 PM, my line backed up again. I fished out the original receipt from last year's files, called and was told they could have their on-duty tech out at my house that night, but since he had two calls ahead of me, it might not be until very late. I was offered the option of getting the first appointment Sunday morning (8 AM), which I took. The tech arrived promptly this morning, gave a quick glance at my paperwork from last year, confirmed there was no charge and got to work. He ran his machine from both of my house clean-outs to make sure there was no other blockage. Then he said he wanted to do the video inspection. Suspicious of an up-charge, I made some "I dunno" kind of noises before he quickly assured me it was free, even with the free service call. He (and the video) showed me that my original, 1969 iron pipe was pitted with rust but intact and free of roots. The original asbestos pipe connecting to the municipal line still looked like new. He suggested an enzyme cleaner to remove soap clinging to the top half of the iron pipe and said he carried such a product for sale. It was not a critical issue, so I passed. Final score: drain unclogged, visual confirmation of no bigger problem, ZERO charge. I did give the guy a nice tip, however. Keep your paperwork and have it in your hand if claiming the free second visit. read more

We found a considerable leak under our kitchen sink on a Friday afternoon. We called our usual plumber who couldn't come out and was closed the next day. So I called Mr. Rooter and they were able to line a plumber up for us on Saturday afternoon. The leak was from an old faucet which had to be replaced. While Adam took it all apart I was able to go to our local hardware and pick up a new one. It all worked out perfectly and it was put in. Great! But the really nice part was meeting Adam. Our water heater erupted at midnight last night. The emergency shut off valve broke and water was gushing everywhere. We called every emergency plumber on Yelp. None of them even called us back or dispatched a plumber except Mr. Rooter. He was here within 1/2 hour, turned the water off, and made a bypass so that we could use cold water until the hot water heater was replaced. The plumber came out the next day, installed a new water heater, and applied the $250 I paid last night for the emergency service to the total repair cost. On top of the fast service, the customer interfacing is superb. I was contacted via telephone to schedule the appointment today and notified when the guy was on the way. I tried to do a simple replacement of a bathroom sink. It should have been easy, but when I tried to hook up the hoses, one leaked badly and it was obvious that it was loose. I called Mr. Rooter (Watsonville) and the next morning they arrived to fix my problem. It turns out that the hose was defective so I needed to take it back and replace it. While they were here they gave me an estimate for replacing my leaking shower valves. When I tried to hand them my credit card, they said, "No Charge." My water heater broke and the Mr. Rooter sticker was on it so I called the number. This was Friday afternoon, the 13th of January. Chuy came and told me to turn off the water (which I am grateful for) as it was continuing to leak from the heater. He told me Mr. Rooter can do the work Monday morning. They would supply the water heater, etc. The estimate he gave me was $4100.00. I was surprised at the expense. The written estimate was emailed to me as well. I did some research after checking in with family and friends about the cost. I called Tino's Plumbing on Sunday and over the phone he gave me the estimate of $1900.00. Tino's came Monday morning, brought the same brand of water heater Chuy had mentioned, installed it and did a great job! How happy I am that I called for other estimates. Beware of the leech field restoration scam. Mr. router had such amazing reviews that when my septic ticket system backed up into my lower floor I felt very confident calling them. They came out and had a camera I had my septic tank pumped so that they could get into the pipes and let me know if it was a o'clock in the pipes or a leech field failure. Supposedly at first they could not get into the pipes at all so they sold me the service called Litchfield restoration. Which is almost $1800! They also want to charge me $1000 to add a few pieces of pvc pipe. Luckily I was hands-on and realized that for $30 worth of pipe in some adhesive I could easily manage to do that part of the job. But talk about overpriced! Feeling vulnerable because the septic tank was not running and they claim they could not get a camera through to figure out the condition of the Leach field . I agreed to the exorbitantly priced Leitchfield restoration process. Because they have to inject the enzymes and come back several days later to see if they're working? The whole was open and left the pipe to the Leach field exposed so that I could add on the new piece of PC v that was damaged. I decided to get some rubber gloves and go into the pipe to see if I could feel a clog or remove some mud. With very little effort and only halfway up my arm I discovered that the pipe was actually cracked and broken and some tree roots were infiltrating the pipe. If this company actually use the camera that they had and did an honest job they would've noted this right away. Costing me nearly $2000 with no guarantees and who could've guessed where the scam would've lead to next and how much it would've cost?! Where of this company and the technician named Ellie. He has no problem lying right to your face. As I questioned and was hands-on through every part of this process. And how could they efficiently blast the septic system with $17-$1800 worth of chemicals if they couldn't even get a camera inside to see if the drain was cleared or not? I did complain to the business and they sent the manager out. He was professional and smooth talking. But I'm still left with this uneasy feeling. After digging deeper I realize that the entire pipe from the turn off to the Leitchfield had been cracked collapsed for the tree roots. That when the manager came out the camera went in with ease and he said the Leitchfield look great. It just doesn't add up. I replace the broken pipe myself but I urge you to be careful and be very very hands-on before you commit to a restoration. And I still am questioning how some water. Which came out of my tap! And some chemicals and 15 minutes to 30 equals. Over $1700.00! read more
