I used to come here a lot growing up and so when I'm back in the area I sometimes stop in got a quick bite. The bathroom was TERRIBLY filthy today. I mean as bad as it gets - I was so disappointed that I had already ordered my meal. I would have just left if I had seen it before I ate. There were about ten moth balls oddly sitting in the sink, no hand soap to be found and there was scum and mold growing around the toilet, everywhere along the floor actually. The rest of the restaurant was dirty too, they need a deep cleaning from a professional organization. There is no way they are putting the proper attention toward clean food conditions of the restroom looks that unkept. The food was off too - the meat used to be fresh and so was the bread. My bread was hard and too chewy and the meat seemed processed. I was so let down. To the owner: please keep it clean or business will decline! read more

Came here since we were passing by for a quick lunch. The guy at the counter wasn't too friendly. I used to go to a Mr. Submarine in the city years back and remembered it being better. My guy opted for the 10 inch Pastrami Sub Meal and order of jalapeno poppers. We both thought the pastrami was too salty. He thought the bread wasn't very fresh. I thought they put too much mustard. Jalapeno Poppers while crunchy was just frozen and not the best tasting. It was clean and roomy in there. read more

I eat at Mr. Submarine in Joliet, Berwyn, and Downers Grove. This is the worst Mr. Submarine location I have ever been to. 1.) They don't have a grill or fresh gyro meat. If it doesn't get cooked in the fryer or microwave, it's not going to be hot. So I couldn't get a gyro platter or hot dinner that wasn't deep fried. I also don't go to restaurants to get served microwaved lunch meat. 2.) I ordered a King Turkey no mayo, with sauce. I got back to the hospital I am staying at and the sandwich had a white creamy sauce on it, I thought, oh great they gave me mayo, no sauce. I don't like mayo, just the idea of it makes me gag. This looked like mayo, but when I picked the slices of tomato and turkey and lettuce off with most of it on there, there was still trace amounts left and I had no other food options and I wasn't going to drive back to return it, so I ate it, but it wasn't mayo it was nasty and sweet like sugar. Eew gross. The sauce at the locations I go to is like italian vinaigrette. Maybe this is their idea of sauce? Completely Disgusting!! Thanks for ruining my evening. read more

The BBQ sauce is not what you think at all and the sandwich is just floppy and disappointing but the garlic fries are greasy deliciousness!

Pretty old school- felt like I was back in 1979 here. Tried this after remembering how good it was when I was a kid. The place is definitely stuck in the late 70's/ early 80's- plastic tables and booths, cheap formica countertops, etc. The 4x4 tiled walls were ugly in 1980, and are even more so today. Remember McDonalds when you were a kid? That's what this place is like inside. The guy behind the counter was kind of a jerk, but in a weird way I actually liked this. I think he complemented the crappy decor quite well. I also find the most angry people tend to be really good cooks, so I looked forward to what this curmudgeon was going to produce for me. he refused to make eye contact with me, and I could tell that he'd rather be working in a closed kitchen. I placed my order and waited. I ordered the cold turkey sub- my standard upon which all sub shops are based. I did mine cold, with lettuce, tomato, cheese only. There were options for mayo and sauce, but I'm training for a marathon and need to keep my girlish figure intact. I wanted to be at least slightly unhealthy, so I ordered an order of fries with the sub, and a Diet RC. The sandwich was assembled on a hoagie roll, really nothing special at all. Some processed turkey and lettuce, tomato,and one long piece of cheese. I still can't figure out what kind of cheese it was- I was guessing provolone but it didn't have the wonderful stink that good provolone should. Anyway, the food was mediocre. I paid maybe $7 for the whole meal so it wasn't a big loss. Eating there was an experience, one which I probably won't repeat again soon. I bet these are good if you're drunk- I think my kids would probably love it too. If you're in the mood for a throwback kind of place it's not bad. If you're craving a good deli sub, stick with Jimmy Johns or try Poor Boy up on Roosevelt. One saving grace for this place-it's locally owned if that's important to you. read more

I am a sucker for their Mr. Submarine sandwich, sans onions. I'm not sure if it's the sesame seed bread, or the creamy white cheese, or maybe the simplicity of the lunch meats that make this sandwich so fantastic, but I absolutely love it. Picked up dinner from here last night. Only reason it get 2 stars is because the sub was good. Customer service wise this place gets 0 stars. Especially the girl working the register last night. She was completely ignorant and rude and acted like she hated her job. Best way to describe her in one word is bitch!! She has no right to be in a position where customer service is part of her job. Mr. sub is one of my favorite places to get a fresh sandwich because of their many choices. Today I found myself around this location (instead of the Berwyn location) and ordered one of my favorites (Gyro Sub). I was disappointed when I saw that my sandwich was microwaved instead of grilled and the gyro sauce was definitely not traditional. I'm writing this review not to bring down this business but because i would advise people to make the drive out to the Berwyn location but also in hopes that this establishment considers a grill and traditional condiments to keep the subs to its best potential and uniform to other Mr Sub locations. read more

I've been going here since I was old enough to drive which is a number of years. Although the staff has never been that friendly and I don't think I've ever seen a smile from them, the sandwiches have to be one of my favorites. The subs there are great. I've eaten at Mr. Submarines off and on for many years and this was my first time at this location on March 31st grabbing a sandwich to take to work with me. It's one of the cleanest locations I've been to ones where you just want to cancel your order and walk the f*** out. The guy who rang my order up was very friendly and there was an older gentleman which I assumed was the owner made my sandwich. My turkey sub was really good and next time I'll have them to add extra cheese and mayo. My only issue with the franchise is that it's time for them to remodel the restaurants to make them more appealing to the current time. The restaurants' decor screams the 70s 80s and early 90s. The tile look was fashionable 30 years ago, but not in 2018. Food is still good and made fresh to order. Employees should wear nametags and also have their name printed on the receipt so if there's an issue a customer can look back and refer to who rang their order up. Drove 2 hours to come to this place cause I love there Italian Beef. It never hurts to take a few subs home for later. Must get it dipped!

Maybe a pizza puff once, ok. They are open late but will hit the spot any time of the day. I've eaten at the others around Chicago too, don't bother going to a different one. Love these subs! Bread is very fresh and meat is carved daily! Can get a huge whole pickle cut in 4 slices for $1.38! Love the cheese which is one long slice that covers the whole sandwich. I love Mr. Sub. The brown haired girl who works at this location was COMPLETELY rude and acted as if it the biggest annoyance having to serve us our two subs and mac and cheese bites. I paid and said thank you and she didn't say a word. She gave us our food and again I said thank you and she just stared. So I'm ordering my food just regular fries with cheese on the side because in my opinion the garlic fries are a hundred times better on 47th and Plainfield and as I'm talking to a customer as I am a customer as well I was confronted by the young cashier and told me to please step out and that I'm no longer allowed at that location... Mind you I said nothing wrong but expressing my fifth amendment. I wasn't even talking to this cashier and he interrupted my conversation with another customer and said that I'm banned from his store which is fine with me because every other mr.sub I've been to has garlic fries that are unbelievable and these guys just put on Adobo seasoning without any garlic at all and just like I said for my last post about them they give you chicken fingers as thin as paper so now my new opinion besides them not having good food or any type of good deals is that that location is a mockery to the rest of the mr. Submarines around our location I usually don't complain about food I'm a very laid-back person but the customer service was definitely a thumbs down and whether I was quote on quote band I wouldn't want to step another foot inside of that place ever again just due to the attitude of the employees there it's sad when you can't get good customer service at a fast food place that stays open late for a customer courtesy and then they don't let you express your opinion inside of their establishment... I had never been in a Mr. Submarine before; We have one in the Village where I work. I drive past it at least ten times a day, and wondered if it was much different than Subway, Jimmy John's, or Quizno's. So a few days ago I decided to give it a try. Since I'm pretty much an Italian Beef Sandwich fan, I thought I'd give their roast beef a try, and I'm glad I did. For approximately $5, I got an almost foot long sandwich on freshly baked "white" sub roll. I had them toast the bread with the roast beef piled on it, and then had some lettuce, pickles, olives, usual spices, and Italian dressing garnish. I actually enjoyed this sandwich. The roast beef was very flavorful, and didn't taste like the kind of roast beef "sausage" you get from Arby's. All the ingredients were fresh, the lettuce was crispy, and the spices and dressing really enhanced the sandwich. If I were to put the other sub sandwiches in a rating scale, I'd likely put Mr. Submarine just above Subway, and slightly below Quizno's. Jimmy John's is a little too "foo foo" for me, as I don't think those little sprouts taste that great on a sandwich. I'll probably try Mr. Submarine again, next time sampling the Corned Beef that they say is one of their signature sandwiches. read more

I travel for my job IE I'm ALWAYS in my car. I also LOVE Mr. Submarine and will stop any time I see one. I stopped at this particular location a few days ago, and before ordering I went to use the washroom. The bathrooms looked like they hadn't been cleaned since that place opened. Every surface was grimy, including the walls, sink, toilet, and the floor probably has never seen a mop let alone a broom. The toilet seat was up and covered in pee. When I used my shoe to push the seat back down, there was pee pooled behind it. And this was in the WOMEN'S room!!! I couldn't even use the bathroom after seeing how disgusting everything was. Shouldn't the bathroom be one of the cleanest places in the building??? If as a store owner or employee, you don't see the importance of cleaning the bathroom, do I believe you will wash your hands and clean your kitchen and cooking surfaces??? HELL NO! I did not order food nor did I eat any time immediately following that visit. I was grossed out. And to MIKE M., this is probably why you and others get the runs after eating here. I would have given this place no stars if that was an option! read more
