My husband loves a GOOD Italian sub. Until last night, he could not find one in Richmond. His Italian sub was absolutely a food Lover's Dream. He kept saying "oh my God, oh my God, oh my God this is delicious", as he devoured it. He said "this is the way in Italian sub is supposed to taste!" He ordered the three meat sub with everything on it plus banana peppers. I ordered the gyro already knowing that it was delicious from previous visit. The meat is so tender and delicious and overloaded the pita bread. the tzatziki sauce was delicious as well. This store doesn't look like much from the outside but the food is well worth it and not expensive at all. The portions are huge. I grew up in VA and I hadn't visited Mr. Submarine in so many, many years. My mother used to take my siblings and I here. I was in the area and decided to stop by for lunch. I was impressed with my Sub and it was great to see so many customers coming to the drive-thru as they are not yet opened inside due to COVID -19. My Sub was neatly prepared with a fresh sub roll. The customer service was awesome as I called my order in. Impeccable service, yes. I work in customer service and know the importance of giving the best service no matter what service you are providing. I know that is one of the reasons Mr. Submarine is still in business. What a pleasant surprise!!! I have passed this place hundreds of times and finally thought to stop in. I didn't even think it was open upon arrival because there were no cars in the parking lot but this is a great low key joint. I ordered a gyro sandwich to go, excellent price (under $7) plus extra meat with fries and onion rings. The cucumber/tzatziki sauce was delicious! This pita was LOADED, extra gyro meat is completely over powering the pita. I've never had a gyro any where else that didn't try to skimp on the meat. I'm in heaven! The fries were refreshingly tasty, crispy shoe string type fries, comparable to McDonalds fry flavor imo. Onion rings were so good, excellent ratio of onion and beer batter crunch! NEVER AGAIN The manager called me a liar after I paid $10 for a steak and cheese no toppings. When I get home there's a slather of Mayo under the cheese (which can't even melt). I called and spoke with an employee who asked me to call back the next day for the manager. Nothing was mentioned about keeping the sub. NOTHING.) So now this manager claims they need the sub back "it's policy". And "they've had problems with people". Frankly none of that concerns me. Your employee said nothing of this yesterday. I went out of my way to spend $10 on a sub. I did all the right things by calling and then even calling back the next day. You'd think a loyal, tipping customer would be appreciated. She offered me free fries and a drink when I purchase a combo on my next visit(??) That's when I got hot. And loud. At that point she said she'd replace my sub. To which I replied "I don't trust you to make my food now. Keep it. I'm never going here again. You have poor customer service - this call should've never gotten to this point." I ate half a sub for lunch, the other half for a driving home snack.The food is decent, just don't get too fancy with it. Stick to the subs and gyro's and you will be pleasantly surprised. First, the hours of operation listed on Yelp and on the store front itself are incorrect. If you call them and ask what time they close, they'll tell you 8pm which is also incorrect because they faithfully turn the grills off at 7:45pm and they lock the doors at 7:30pm so you can only order via drive-thru. Second, I can only speak on the steak and cheese subs as that is all we ever order. If you're looking for an authentic philly steak taste, this is not for you. However, it is worth the money as they load it with a lot of meat and it's a foot long. read more

This was my first time going here after running to the bank across the street. I needed a place to get a quick bite to pick up and figured I would try this place. I ordered the Gyro (no onion). Meat seemed a little dry, but adding the sauce helped. Would be nice if the lettuce was not so shredded as the warm meat causes it to go soggy fairly fast. I picked some of the tomato off because it was too much for me, but happy to say it looked fresh. Won't count this one off the list yet. Ok. So now I'm on a mission to find the best steak & cheese sub. This place was close but ended up being very expensive. I ordered a steak and cheese sub with mushrooms (found very few for the extra $2.50...!!!!!), mayo and requested extra steak again and extra $2.50! I also decided to try the onion rings and was disappointed. It all came to a whopping $18.95...!!!! The rings started out good but half of them were missing the onion and a very large clump was all batter and no onion, so that was a complete bust. (So far the best onion rings are at The Home Team Grill!) I asked for garlic to be added and was told it came with garlic.... sadly none was to be found! I asked for teriyaki and was told they do not offer this. As for the steak.... it was ground up so fine that it almost looked like beach sand. I know the request for extra steak was overkill but I wanted to see if they could do it right. The extra was there but the bread just couldn't handle it. The service was surprisingly fast, almost too fast which makes me believe that the steak and rings were not cooked to order. The steak just shouldn't be so finely ground. So.... my search will go on. I will say that the customer service is excellent. I was greeted as I entered the door and did not feel rushed as I skimmed through the menu. One day she brought me along, to my dislike, but I cannot tell you how hard I fell in love with Mr. Submarine! Don't let the outside appearance or location fool you!
