Ill let you guys in on a lil secret of mine. This place is a four star for me. The original on mission is a five star. I love this place, its clean, awesome salsa bar, and they keep their prices low! If I want to have a lighter lunch I can, and if I want to pig out carne asada here I come! The reason I give this one less star is sometimes I can tell when they are in a hurry because they let the quality show. I got rolled tacos once and there was a smear of guac with some wilted lettuce. This would of NEVER happened at the original... so I sometimes leave a bit disapointed, but not enough for it not to be one of my local faves. read more

Lost all the way up in no man's land of San Marcos on a job, I needed a quick lunch and Mr. Taco was there to get me some food. For only about $8 and some change I ended up with a massive plate of yummy Mexican food. I helped myself to a bag of them for dine in. The grande plate (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/mr-taco-san-marcos-2#-OKxGFUvJqScvRjk_bLRbg) with carne asada is your basic plate with tortillas. However they aren't skimpy with the meat, unlike most places, they give you fairly a large amount of meat on the plate. The lack of guacamole wasn't cool though, I need more guac! Everything seemed to taste pretty good, the meat seasoning was alright but the meat was a bit overcooked and too tough. Rice and beans had good texture and the beans weren't runny. The guac and pico de gallo were refreshing, just not enough of it on the plate to satisfy. I really enjoy places that give you the hot sauce tube (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/mr-taco-san-marcos-2#BAWX6X96UZl3dpiZ923K6g), so you can use as much as you want (I tend to use quite a bit). Overall Mr. Taco is a nice spot to get some Mexican grub, right across the street from the college with moderate prices. This Mexican restaurant is conveniently next to CSUSM! SO if you are a student it is only a few minutes away. The service was great and fast and the line was super long during dinner time. Although they gave me a beef taco in stead of chicken, they didn't hesitate to get me a new chicken taco:) They also serve horchata to drink here which is my fav!! Pretty typical taco shop ambience. Giant overhead menu complete with pictures and numbers. Burritos, taco, tostadas, enchiladas. You order at the counter and then take a seat and wait for them to service your food to the table. They have daily specials, I came in on a Monday and order the two taco, rice, beans and a drink special for $7.95. Good deal for the amount of food you get. Tacos were average. They weren't overly greasy which was nice. They weren't packed with flavor either. Rice and beams were better than average. Tasted like they were homemade same day. Recently got a California burrito with carne asada, so supplementing my old review with this one. Definitely filling with lots of tender juicy beef inside. However, there wasn't enough guacamole, avocados, or sour cream inside the burrito itself. The sauce bar had a good variety - my favorite was the green salsa one (mild), whereas the red chili one was WAY too spicy and overpowers the taste of the burrito. Meh. Wasn't bad tasting yet nothing special. Went with a carne asada burrito as my baseline of all Mexican food and added a fish taco. Burrito was okay with salsa feeds and guac. The tomatoes in the salsa fresca were not ripe, too hard and not even close to red, and thus lacked flavor. The fish taco had a weak white sauce and the same poor salsa fresca. Their drunk station was good as it had the Mexican drinks too, piña, tamarindo, etc. The salsa bar had red and green and some sorry carrots (mushy, bland) and some pale limes (looked white and yellow in rind color). Mr. Taco a.k.a. Mr. Dependable. This is the Mexican spot that I have frequented more than any other place in San Diego since starting a post-bac at Cal State San Marcos across the street. I have been here at all times of the day: an early dinner of tacos before an exam or a late night celebratory burrito after a long biology lab. The delicious food at Mr. Taco hits the spot every time. My go-to orders are the TJ Street Tacos (carne asada and al pastor) when they are $1.25/each from 3-6pm. So tasty and such a great value. The California Burrito here is one of the best in town and always puts me in a better mood. To top it all off, the employees here are always nice and I appreciate how they bring your food to your seat with a bottle of hot sauce. I just got back from a mini vacation in San Marcos and I admit I was a bit skeptical about trying out their Mexican food. What if Mr. Taco doesn't compare to the Fruitvale tacos I am so used to and love? BUT in true Yelper spirit and in the name of good food, I gave Mr. Taco a try and booooooy, was I wrong! Their tacos are just as good! I ordered four TJ tacos, 2 carnitas and 2 carne asada. The carnitas was cooked just right with a slight crisp to the pork. The carne asada was flavored well. Now the sauce is what did it for me! The salsa verde and the red sauce (idk what it's called) is absolutely delish! Complemented the tacos quite nicely without being overly spicy. read more

Great food, period. Not your typical Alberto's or filibertos, you name it- the restaurant here is clean, the food seems a bit healthier (although I don't know if that's actually true, but there's no grease dripping from the plate), and they have a variety of options even for those watching their weight, vegetarian or who just want more than typical tacos. I recommend pretty much anything, their rolled tacos, egg, bean & cheese burrito for breakfast, their enchiladas suisas or their chicken salad which is huge and healthy and one word, YUM. The only downside is I wouldn't say they're "cheap"; I feel compared to most places they are on the more expensive side at least in comparison to them ($7 for rolled tacos combo vs $5) but it's definitely worth it. If you want to pay a catering fee for dining in just eat at this place. Food was okay but a fee for bringing them our business was tacked on the receipt so we won't be back here again. How have I not reviewed this place yet???! I'm obsessed with their breakfast burritos, they're so delicious, cheap, and big! They have several options for all tastes. The one that I get comes with eggs, beans, and potatoes and rings in at under 5 bucks! They have several different vegetarian friendly menu items and everything on their menu is priced very fairly. I LOVE the green salsa that they have in their salsa bar, I always put way more than I should all up in my burrito. The lady who works there is always pleasant & my food always comes out fairly fast. Solid taco place, and probably the best you'll get in the immediate area. Ordered a carne asada burrito which had tender and flavorful meat, had all the good stuff (guac, sour cream, pico) in it. My daughter got the chicken enchilada plate, which had a delicious red enchilada sauce...she's a very picker eater and ate nearly half of it. I call that success. This was our go to place until recently. Giving it one more try we found the quality has disappeared. The carnitas burrito was dry, lacking seasoning, salsa fresca and guac. The wet chile relleno was tasteless. Very little sauce, very small pepper lacking cheese and coating. Not authentic at all. Both tortillas were dry and chewy.
