Awesome place for good food. I think i found a new favorite in Plainfield. Food is very fresh, prices are reasonable and portions are big. We took home quite a bit because we were full but wanted more. Fresh mozz sticks. Fried pickles were better than any other place in town. Grape leaves were hand made and very flavorful. Wanted some takeout on Saturday night and started looking around Yelp for restaurants. I don't live far from Mr Z's, but I've never tried it. I saw a review that showed the pulled pork sandwich and I knew that I had to try it. Ordering was a breeze since you can do everything online. We ended up with a pulled pork sandwich and a cheese calzone. Both were amazing! The pulled pork sandwich was loaded with perfectly seasoned pork and tasty BBQ sauce. All this juicy pork was piled high on a toasty brioche bun. The fries were a steak cut style with a curly fry like coating. The cheese calzone visibly had different types of cheese and was cooked to perfection. It even came with a side of hot tomato sauce for dipping that tasted homemade! Quite possibly the worst meal I have had in any restaurant. Chicken Piccata was a gloppy mess of white flavorless sauce over spaghetti. Boiled (yes, boiled) chicken tenders with at least a 1/4 cup capers poured on top. Garlic stick with meal was a small dinner roll toasted under grill. None of these items had any flavor. Waitress came to the table 15minutes after serving, asked if I wanted a box (as most of the "meal" was still on plate). I unexpectedly blurted out "that was terrible". I am changing my review to 1 star. This place is a literal joke. Apparently they have changed owners 6 months ago and it went to crap. They have messed up my order 6 times in a row. Last night I placed a very easy order at 3:50 on. 2 grinders, kids cheeseburger meal, onion rings. On my grinders, both grinders I ordered EXTRA MAYO. LET ME REPEAT, EXTRA MAYO. I picked up my food, drove 20 minutes home. Opened both Grinders, NO MAYO. HOW DO YOU DO THIS? It was not busy at all in this place. I called in to let the manager know, he made some bull crap excuses right and left. I told him to stop because I have worked in the pizza business for 10 years and there is no excuse for that. I was hoping that my twins would enjoy their birthday meal by placing their orders at Mr. Z's. Unfortunately, I was wrong. During the meal selection for a party of 7, both of my twins ordered meals which did not match what they wanted and ordered. One of my sons ordered Veal Marsala and received Chicken Marsala. My other son ordered Chicken Francaise and received Chicken Parmesan. It seemed like this was done intentionally for both of my children as a matter of convenience for the kitchen. If these meal selections weren't available, the wait staff should have notified us and allowed us to make an alternative selection. I was all too willing to pay for my son's meals assuming that it would be exactly what they ordered. I never had an opportunity to consider this due to the poor performance we witnessed. I had the most expensive meal on the menu (New York strip, with scallops and shrimp) and received an improperly cleaned scallop. After biting into the scallop and realizing what I was biting down on, my appeal to consume more diminished immediately. It was a shame that this occurred because the steak was cooked perfectly. I was not impressed with the lack of attention to detail and want to forewarn any other potential customers of what they might also receive. On my meal, I received a cooked potato with no additional items. The table had no salt and pepper, plus the meal did not come with butter or sour cream. This is standard fare and was absent. Customers shouldn't need to request seasoning from the wait staff. It should automatically be delivered if it is not kept at the table when a large party is ordering. My son, that ordered the Chicken Francaise, said that the chicken was 'tough'. I assume he was consuming a lot of gristle if this was his experience. It's a shame that the food preparation was so poor. It did seem like management wanted to communicate with the guests but was overlooking a critical chance to make a positive impression on the customer. However, cleanliness, accuracy, and table setup was extremely lack luster. Therefore, we won't be returning any time soon. I hope that other customers will not find their experience as poor as mine. read more

Great if you want apps, salads, pizza or pasta. Nice decor and large open bar area. Seems to be owned by Greek people but the baklava was bad - soggy instead of crisp and not warm. I ordered the Veal Parmesan and my husband ordered a small cheese pizza. The marinara sauce was very tasty, the veal not so much. The pizza was kind of strange tasting and so my husband and I shared my dinner. I believe the waitress knew it wasn't good because she grabbed the food off the table and walked away, she never asked us if we would like to take our leftovers home, we waited at the table for her to come back with the pizza but she came back empty handed, not that we would have taken it home but it would have been nice if she asked us if we would like anything wrapped. Let's make this easy- Cons: The menu is huge. Both in physical size and content. There are FAR too many things on the menu for one person to ever want on a menu. It took me 10 minutes of reading and comparing just to wind up with 5 things I wanted. They have 30 salads! Pros: The restaurant is very clean. We were greeted by just about everyone nearby with a smile and eye contact when we entered. We felt very welcomed. Our server, Cameron, was amazing. The atmosphere of the entire restaurant was very relaxed. Cameron was personable and he took care of everything we needed without hesitation. I had the Black & Bleu pizza, and it is amazing. If you want cheap food there is a Domino's, McDonald's and Wendy's nearby. For what it costs, I got exactly what I paid for, and it was worth every penny. I leave most restaurants wishing something had gone better. This is not one of those situations. On our way out everyone thanked us for coming and said goodbye. What a pleasant surprise! We went there last night because two local friends go here regularly and wanted to take us. Shannon, our waitress, was outstanding. She listened to our allergies and intolerances, talked to the chefs, and then came back with suggestions. She was friendly and attentive. The food was amazing on levels I was not expecting. I had the grinder with "real turkey breast" and bacon. The toasted bread was bizarrely good. The turkey breast was outstanding. The bacon added nice saltiness. They got all my adjustments correct the first time. My wife had the chicken bruschetta which she adored, after opening up with a strawberry field salad that she said was great. Picked up order got home no chicken on salad but was charged 12.99. Called them back got same person who called me & she said I could go back & get another salad Or she could credit me. The price is usual for the area. The pizza, calzones, and grinders (subs for those of you not from the area) are really good. I love that they do the free meal on your birthday. So why the 3 stars? The shrimp scampi, the chicken piccata, bolognese, and chicken française are all disappointing. I'm a home cook--a really good home cook. And it annoys me when a restaurant that has a chef doesn't make a simple dish better than me. In the piccata they use chicken tenders, the chicken is supposed to be pounded thinly. Great place with great good. We went here for a 50th birthday party in the bar area. The place has a nice setup with separate dining area and separate bar area. The interior is warm, inviting and clean. The bar area is a nice setup with large bar, tables and high tops. The food for that party was very good. The two bartenders were friendly, fast and efficient and did a great job with large crowd. My only complaint would be there was no room in bar area to dance to musician who was playing, other than that had a great time, enjoyed the food and had great service. read more

We have only ordered takeout and it was very good. The food was fresh and tasted as if we ate it in the restaurant. The menu is very extensive, so it's almost impossible not to find something you like. We've ordered salad, pasta, and a calzone and all were huge and delicious. Good food and exceptional service. Tonight was my first time trying this new restaurant that opened about a month ago. First thing: I was very impressed with the wonderful customer service. Our server, Cameron was not only funny but he made me feel quite comfortable. He came over to explain many items I had questions about and also was able to give his own recommendations from several choices I was considering. He came back quickly when our food arrived to make sure things were up to par! Second: The menu is quite long. Many of the pasta options were simply chicken and pasta with a different sauce. There was also numerous pizza/calzone options, salad options, and sandwich options. It was quite overwhelming and I feel they could maybe curb it down or simplify it a bit. Third: I had the chicken ala vodka which was good but not great. The roasted vegetables were well cooked and absolutely delicious! However, I felt the sauce was lacking in something but still tasty. The portions were quite large and I feel that it was a good price for the amount of food given. I was surprised that there was no salad that came with a pasta meal such as mine was but it wasn't a big deal. Overall, it was a nice clean restaurant. As generations of family and new customers from surrounding areas have enjoyed dining in Plainfield ; The locals who are there regularly for dinner have found that the menu has not changed, fish and chips are not available etc., and the bar room chairs for dining are unacceptable and a liability. Our communication with other patrons have made us realize that nothing is about to change. Worst place ever! My buddy and I sat at the bar and no one acknowledged us for 15 minutes. We order two draft beers (the bartender told us the beer as from a brewery on Long Island, we looked it up... it was a CT beer) and when we got the 2 beers, each beer had hair on the top of the beer We immediately left and won't return ever. Great service and decent food. This restaurant has only been open for a couple weeks but could use some changes. Pricing seems a bit expensive considering the pasta dishes don't include salad and some don't include garlic bread. The menu is way to big and the food is just OK. Unfortunately they left a lot of the furniture from the bbq place that use to be here which doesn't fit the Italian restaurant. They also close at 8 on Sundays which seemed early. Overall it is too expensive and the food isn't great but the exceptional service from our bartender Ashley made up for the other issues . I will return in the future and hope that things improve! read more
