Each and every time time they have been throughout, friendly, and trustworthy. On my last oil change they ran a complementary overall vehicle check and ended up finding a problem, that if left unchecked, would have been very expensive down the road. And without me even having to ask, they brought me back and showed/explained the problem, along with answering all my questions. Communication during all services/repairs has always been easy and timely. VIP's customer service is top notch as well. When my car had to stay there for a few days, I was offered (at no cost) a ride from and back to the shop to pick up my car. (I lived very close at the time and realize that may be a factor going forward.) During the last repair, they were also able to give me a loaner car, which took away so much of the stress that comes along with having a car in the shop. Finally, if you're lucky, the owner's sweet pup will be there when you come in. :) I have recommend them to so many people in my day to day life, and I recommend them to anyone reading here as well! That morning, I called the shop to ask if they could assemble a set of struts and replace a CV shaft on my truck. I was told it was no problem, and they began working on the struts. About an hour later, I received a call that they were "finished" and ready for pickup. However, when I arrived, I was told only one strut was complete, and the rest of the crew was out to lunch. The person behind the desk told me to go ahead and take the one strut and begin the work myself, so I did. Upon returning to my truck, I noticed the assembled strut was visibly crooked. I brought it back for correction and picked up the second strut. I assumed everything was resolved at that point, but after installing the struts, I discovered that the driver-side strut was seized and would not compress. It was now late, so I had the truck towed back to the shop for repair and to address the frozen strut. The following day, I called to check on the status of the repair. I was told the strut could be realigned, but I was met with a very poor attitude from the staff and was told I "shouldn't watch YouTube videos to work on my truck." For the record, I had been following manufacturer Technical Service Bulletins and Bilstein's official instructions, I'm also an FAA licensed aircraft mechanic. The next day I was informed the truck was "ready and aligned." Since I was at work, my mother went to pick it up and I paid the bill in full. That evening, when I inspected the truck, I discovered that the front sway bar was missing entirely -- it had not been reinstalled and was still in the bed of the truck, along with the mounting hardware. It had been left lying next to where the strut was they fixed. Despite this obvious omission, the shop had released the truck to my mother, claiming the work was complete and the truck had been aligned. To be clear: They gave us back a vehicle, declared it aligned and finished, despite it missing a 4-foot-long piece of suspension that was clearly provided and noted. There was even a written note in the cab and verbal instructions given on the phone regarding the sway bar and its hardware. These were apparently ignored. I returned the truck that night and left the keys in the drop box. The next morning, I called to ask what happened, and was told that the mechanic who started the job went home, and the person behind the desk -- who I'm not even sure is a certified mechanic -- had "finished" the job. I was later told the sway bar would be reinstalled, but that no new alignment was needed. I have serious doubts about this, given the work that had been done and undone at that point. Not surprisingly, they failed to install my skid plate as well, which was still laying in the bed of my truck with it's hardware when I arrived home from work. At no point was I offered any compensation for the extra day without my truck, the inconvenience of having it towed, or the serious issue of the vehicle being released in an unsafe condition. I was still charged $800. This experience showed a lack of communication, poor workmanship, disregard for safety, and unprofessional behavior from start to finish. I cannot recommend Tom's Family Auto based on this experience. My family and friends will no longer be using this establishment after being loyal customers for over 20 years.

This led me to spend money on repairs for a car whose engine was dying--something Chevy confirmed shortly after. The shop was evasive, dismissive, and in the end, wasted my time and money while my warranty expired. --- Full Review: Do not bring your vehicle here if you care about honest diagnostics and clear communication. Last year, I had my throttle body replaced here, and while the work was okay, it was done by one of their regular techs--not Doug, the owner. This year, when my check engine light came back on, things went completely downhill. In late May, I brought my car in with a specific concern: an oil pressure code, which is notoriously tied to serious engine issues in my car model (Chevy Malibu 2016-2018). Chevy even has recalls for this issue--just not for my specific trim. I explicitly asked the shop to investigate this code. Doug took over the service this time. Instead of performing a simple oil pressure test (a basic and relatively cheap way to confirm if the code was serious), he cleared the codes, claimed one didn't return, and recommended I replace the mass air flow sensor instead--which I paid for. He failed to inform me until after the work that he never actually ruled out the oil pressure issue with the proper test. This gave me a false sense of security. I thought the issue was handled, only for the car to worsen significantly over the next two weeks. When I returned to the shop, Doug claimed the oil pressure code was back--and he needed to look into it again. I told him we had already paid for that! That's when things got truly frustrating. Doug became argumentative and defensive, telling me he "can't remember every car" and denying the code was in his notes--until he found it at the top of the receipt. By this time, my warranty had expired, which was devastating because if he had performed the test and diagnosed the engine problem properly the first time, I may have gotten help from the warranty company. He offered to "call the warranty provider" to help but never did--despite me calling to check multiple times. I ended up taking the car to Chevy, who confirmed exactly what I feared: my engine was failing. They advised a full engine replacement. The cost of digging further into the failure wasn't even worth it at that point. To top it off, when I called back to get a simple oil change receipt (to prove to Chevy that I maintained the car properly), Doug was supposed to call me on Friday. But surprise--he doesn't work Fridays. I called again, and when he finally returned my call, he screamed at me for "threatening" his workers (which I absolutely did not do) and rambled about how his dad built the shop. When I told him other mechanics had said he absolutely should have done the oil pressure test, he acted like that wasn't required and said he doesn't have to explain everything he does to customers. That's a huge red flag for anyone relying on honest diagnostics. His solution? Bring the car back and do a payment plan with him for a fix that should've been diagnosed correctly the first time. He said he doesn't usually offer that kind of deal, but would "do it for us" since we have a kid and are tight on money. --- Bottom Line: This shop might be okay for simple fixes, but the owner Doug is dismissive, unprofessional, and refuses to take responsibility for serious mistakes. I paid out-of-pocket for a repair that I never would've done had I known my engine was dying. Now I'm out of warranty, down thousands of dollars, and have a car with a blown engine. I do not recommend taking your vehicle here--especially for anything beyond basic work.

I've dealt with Bruce and his team of mechanics at My Car Guy Auto Repair several times, and to say that they are best would be an understatement. They give honest, upfront estimates of what needs to be repaired before they do any work your vehicle, which is at a far better price than most dealerships or other auto repair businesses offer. Bruce, and his team have extensive experience with all makes of Honda and Toyota vehicles. As an ASE Master Certified Technician specializing in Honda products, he strongly recommends using authentic auto parts from these two trusted brands, and not generic, third-party manufacturers. Likewise, I've had my Civic tuned up and it runs like a champ, at less than half the price quoted by three other auto shops in the Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti area. No matter what the make or model of vehicle you own, be it domestic or foreign, Bruce and his team of dedicated mechanics will repair it no matter what the problem is. The only kind of service he doesn't provide are front-end alignments. However, this may change in the future.

They tend to charge on the rather high side of things and refuse to work with longtime customers on pricing or give a slight discount when multiple things are being done. Lastly, their work doesn't seem to last as long as it does when getting fixes done at a dealership, so your brakes will go quicker.. oil will NEED to be changed around 1.5k miles etc. They guarantee their work, kind of, but not for long and they're vague about specifics. I'd like to get more work done here, but it will be cheaper and last longer if customers went elsewhere.. So.. typical independent auto shop?
