I really, really want to like this store. Muji store itself gets a 5/5. I love the roomy, inviting interior, the essential oil steamer they always have on, the neutral color palette, the big cushions on the floor by the entrance. Feels comfortable and calming every time I walk in. It's a pleasure to browse - an experience not unlike walking around an Apple Store. I know I don't NEED anything but I really want an excuse to buy something. I almost never want to leave. Their products get a 5/5. I love the Muji philosophy and their amazing design. Everything looks utilitarian, natural, environmentally friendly, minimalist. I want to throw out everything I currently own and convert it all to Muji stuff. I feel like I am using products of the future. The service, OTOH, is really, really hit and miss. Oi. If you happen to get the one or two really competent people in the store, it's just really great. They're super helpful and responsible, on top of everything, stuff gets done. If you happen to get the remaining 80% of people, good luck to you. Expect to spend a puzzling amount of time waiting around while a group of employees all simultaneously scramble in general confusion for an answer to a simple question. Also expect to be given different answers depending on who you ask, when you ask (even if you ask the same person). It's not that people don't try to help, but just seems like there is overall high level of disarray about products, pricing, promotions, inventory at the store. To the extent it really makes the consumer experience feel unnecessarily frustrating. It's like.. imagine that new employee who just started working in the store this week. Now imagine a whole store staffed with them... My advice is: go there to buy small items, but for more complex questions, don't expect too much. I came here with boyfriend and his dad and sister to check out the store. It's like Uniqlo for household products and organization. Simple, modern, and a lack of branding seem to be their hallmark. They had a few diffusers going so it smelled nice. There was a sitting area for people to relax in (boyfriend) while their counterparts shopped. An eclectic mix of mugs, scarfs/gloves/jackets, cool stationary and pens, and snacks were being sold. It's a cute store and fun way to pass about half an hour perusing. this is such a great place to get colored pens, pencils at small points (.38) as well as lots of different notebooks in neutral colors. I like their organization tools to though pretty expensive (but it's clear not frosty!). And when you go in there is a nice whiff of vapor oils coming out of a humidifier thing. It's relaxing. Once you get a book, you can customize it with the stamps. However, given Covid times, I'm not sure I'd touch that stuff. Ideal place for minimalist stationery lovers! read more

I love visiting Muji, whichever location I can get to. This particular one is really small, and it's not obvious when walking down 19th st; it's pretty easy to walk right past. Besides their clothing and toiletries, I'm always getting new pens from here. Besides Kinokuniya, there aren't many places where you can get fine points like .38. The selection of travel-size toiletries is severely limited, and besides, I framed that question so that you had no choice but to say yes. Muji is here for you! They sell all sorts of little bottles, vials, flasks, jars and other containers that you can fill with whatever product you previously had to check and now you can bring it through airport security with no fear of confiscation. And they also sell anything else you would need for travel, if you are not as enthralled by the little vials as I am. And there will be soothing flute music playing as you buy these things. I bought a 3-pack of packaged face masks at another store and wore one the next day. By the end of the day, I had a swollen, red rash on both sides of my face where the edge of the mask met my skin. I came to this Muji with my receipt from my purchase 2 days before and tried to return the masks. I showed them my red, swollen skin and they couldn't care less. They were completely apathetic and just said "we can't give you a refund because you wore it." How would I know that these masks would give me a rash if I didn't wear them first? The manager never even apologized for their crappy product and was completely uninterested. I emailed customer service and never got a response. Muji is an interesting storefront of knick knacks. I wonder if my experience would have been better at the flagship as opposed to the one on 19th in Flat Iron. We randomly passed by this location after having lunch at a nearby restaurant recently. I was most excited to see a few specific things, but after visiting, I felt the experience fell super flat. The store is a nice size and in true Muji fashion there's a variety of different items. However, the atmosphere was a bit dry and stuffy. The staff spoke upon arrival and departure, though they looked a little put off by our entering the store. For now I'll stick to ordering from the website and when back in NYC, I'd much rather check out the flagship. read more

I fell in love with Muji even before I discovered they had standalone stores. Muji to Go at JFK Airport caught my eye with its simple, clean lines and brilliantly-engineered products. I'm even -more- enamored with this import shop after acquiring my two latest awesome gadgets: - an extra-soft cotton sleeping mask (because east-facing windows during the summer do -not- a happy sleeping Kevin make) - a giant ice-ball mold (given as a gift from a thoughtful neighbor) Getting to sleep in past 0600 hours regardless of morning sunlight blasting into my face, and properly-chilled whiskey cocktails? I quite enjoy this branch because it's usually less crowded than the other locations. The space itself is not that big, but the high ceilings are nice. Because of the small storefront, I'd recommend coming here if you have specific items you intend to purchase. If you want to browse, I'd recommend walking down to the Cooper Square location where there's more space to move about. read more

Amazing store with "things you didn't think you needed, but can't live without now". Love their travel sized bottles, luggage, stationery, and dishware. I have had some items for over 10 years now. Their products are sleek, durable and useful. It's mainly a Japanese aesthetic so things are in shades of wood, beige and white. I'm so glad I found a Muji store in the States. I love the minimalistic approach in all of its designs; it's like stepping in to a modern art museum. The selection here is diverse. You can find office supplies, clothing and accessories, furniture, kitchen equipment, and random miscellaneous items such as incense and soap boxes. As a pen aficionado, I always head straight to their pen collection. If you like fine tip pens (0.38mm is where it's at), you will not be disappointed. And the prices? I have been their loyal customer for many years... Until today. Don't get me wrong- I love their stuff; I bought almost all my drawing pens (over 60 or more, over time), at least 8 linen jackets, 2 traveling luggage bags, 8 tea cups and saucers, and other beauty supplies and kitchen utensils among many other things. I will give 5 stars to almost all items they carry. But sadly I have to give only one star because their customer service and their silly return policy. And this is what happened this morning: Two days ago I bought a few mechanical pencils and refill leads (about $32 worth) and when I paid, the cashier asked me if I wanted to pay 5 cents for a bag and she told me it was a new policy. I didn't carry a backpack with me at the time so I agreed to pay 5 cents. Today I went back to return all items (including the shopping bag that I paid 5 cents for) and when I got my return receipt I realized that they didn't credit the 5 cents that I paid for the small shopping bag. When I asked what happened to the returned bag the cashier told me the bag cannot be returned because it was 'used', which to me was like new. It was not the 5 cents, you see, that was important, it was the policy they have that works only one way. The cashier said, "You were informed at the time of sale that you were paying 5 cents if you wanted the bag, and we are doing this to cut down the waste." I told him I still demand the full refund including the 5 cents I paid for the bag because the bag was in fact in good condition. He called the manager, the manager came out and he repeated what the cashier told me earlier and refused to give me a full refund. I was a bit upset with their way of conducting business so I told him, "Because of this 5 cents you refused to give me back, now you are going to lose a customer." He said, "Fine." If anyone from Muji's upper management department reads this review, I have a few suggestions: 1. Consider giving 5 cents discount when customers use their own bags instead of charging 5 cents for a bag, if you really care about environment. 2. If the bag is not returnable, then customers should be told so at the time of sales. And it should be included in the disclaimers at the bottom of receipts in writing. 3. Please train your managers/cashiers so they can do a better assessment for situations like this. The manager was so much into winning the 'argument' over 5 cents with a customer who happened to be wearing one of Muji's linen jackets. The manager should have noticed that I was a regular customer at their store immediately. I think what should have happened was: The cashier should have made his own decision quickly without involving the manager, and apologized that it wasn't made clear to me at the time of sale that the bag was not returnable, 'politely'. Then he should have returned 5 cents from his own pocket. Then I would have refused to accept the 5 cents. Then I would be coming back to buy more stuff. I think what should happen now is: The manager should be fired for his poor judgement and bad customer service. read more

I came here initially because my fountain pen wasn't working (I bought it a couple months ago), the person at the register kindly helped me resolve my problem by going to the back and troubleshooting the issue. In the end she soaked it in water and found that there was just some dried up ink stopping the new ink cartridge from working. The whole time I found the staff to be extremely friendly and helpful. I like this store a little too much. Like in the "get hitched, spend the rest of our lives together and write sonnets on anniversaries" kind of way. First of all, Muji is not expensive, it's even quite cheap. And when they have sales almost everything in the store is marked down. Second of all, the products are all clean, simple and modern yet functional. The Japanese aesthetic pervades everything from their lightweight cardigans and smock dresses to the white geometric soap dispensers and travel lint brush. Basic colors, perfect lines. Thirdly, the selection of travel bags and accessories is absolutely incredible...it's like a better, boutiquey container store. But that's not all. Pens, notebooks, socks, underwear, pencil cases, towels, beach bags, espadrilles, slacks...it's the Walmart for beautiful, well dressed city folk. $80 later and I walked out with a pair of summer sandals, a ridiculously plush throw blanket, a cardholder, two hand towels, a bucket of multicolored pens, and a linen dress. The pens, my goodness the pens! - It feels so classy having a blue and black Muji pen out on the field. A bit pricey compared to most pens, but these get the job done all the time without hesitation. The office organizing items are pretty neat too. Clean, sturdy, and nothing that sticks out with crazy colors - real professional. I crave their simple designs and no name aesthetic, whether it's via a muted sweater, a pencil and paper set, even an umbrella. And their stuff is inexpensive, too! It's always a treat to find unexpectedly pleasant shops. MUJI is such a shop. This isn't a designer boutique; it's an antithesis of name brand. You'll notice that everything is very utilitarian chic. Muted colors of beige, white and gray. No flashy hues or giant logos anywhere. Devoid of bold graphics but certainly not cold. Then when I'm there it's hard to stop myself from buying everything so I can showcase it on tumblr and make someone else very jealous. I hate my life. I want to be rich so I can spend all my money in Muji. When you consider the list of items they sell--everything from men's and women's clothes (shirts, scarves, socks!) to bags (luggage, messenger, purses!) to stationary (pens, notepads, binders!) to kitchenware to home decor to umbrellas, to chairs, to desks to, to to . . . (breathe)-- it may seem a little random. But what an amazingly wonderful space of random. Lisa's right: the aesthetic is very easy to pin down. Sleek, modern, simple, with muted colors that lean toward grayscale and other earthy tones. It's one I'm very attracted to. But unlike other companies that boast or aspire to the same appeal, Muji seems well-made and a brand all their own. The only problem is the price tag. Everything is a pretty penny. Muji isn't necessarily a place for impulse buys, but if you're looking to throw down some cold, hard ca$$$h for something special, it's worth it. read more

I've shopped a Muji stores for a while. The first was when I went to Japan more than 5 years ago. Their minimalist style and very functional products were great. I especially like their colored ink ball pens. Fine tipped, easy to write with yet fast drying so no smudging. However, recently their products have gone down in quality. I bought some small travel containers a few weeks ago for shampoos, facial moisturizers, etc. for a 2 week trip. The clear screw-top style containers that I put lotion in, all started to crack! This was obviously a design flaw, since I did not drop them or put any huge amount of stress on them. They were in a padded travel bag the whole time! When I got back, I brought them to the store to see if I could exchange them for a different type of container of a better quality. The sales person refused, saying it's against their store policy to allow returns or exchanges of any opened product. Sure I understand that, but shouldn't a store stand by the quality of their products?? Especially one that charges substantially more than a Duane Reade or Bed, Bath and Beyond? I am a little sad to give this place only 2 stars, since I used to love it so much. Nevertheless, based on my more recent experience with poor quality products and bad store policies, I think it is deserved. read more

My favorite location, I came here a lot more in the past than currently. The nearby Muji in 41st street is where I frequent now, but despite its big size, doesn't stock that many goods. Case in point-the kitchen or clothing sections. We got a beautiful wooden cutting board and some clothing (got 100% cotton clothing for $10. Folks who say it's expensive, tip for you is to wait for items to go on clearance/off season)-and when I asked a question about some toiletry products, the sales associate was super helpful. It was an hour before closing, so maybe that was why there were plenty of people available to assist (if that helps for the folks here)? Overall, I prefer this location way more than the soho or even 41st street locations. It's quiet, it's nearby a ton of quaint stores, and it's usually not too busy (and this includes the years I've worked in this location as well). Also, has a ton more stock (ironically enough) than other locations. Highly recommend this store! It's not picturesque, but it's super lovely (but if you want picturesque, then go to the 41st st location/New York Times building)! read more

Muji is just so...simple and awesome. Like a Japanese Ikea, but w/o the confusion and crowd. There's a plethora of things you can purchase here: stationery, clothing, bedding, kitcheware etc etc. The merchandise pretty much has the same aesthetic to it, just plain yet functional. Muji is also pretty inexpensive. The item I bought today ( which was a 2 way opening card case ) was about 4 bucks. Most little items there are under 10 or 20 bucks, so you can go in there and have a mini shopping spree with a fifty dollar bill and come back with a mountain of goodies. I need to go back to Muji ASAP to explore the wicked pen collection in the front of the store, as well as the incense and candle area. This will definitely be my shop for little knick knacks and doodads for the months to come. **this review may not make any sense, or be poorly written due to the fact that it is 5AM and I'm super tired, but also super hot b/c I have no AC now. I was obsessed with the containers for makeup from this place and since I was meeting my daughter in Chelsea for some lunch and shopping I decided to save on shipping. This store has a very minimalist and still lots of tiny gadgets in one place vibe going on. It was well stocked. Lots of beige and white going on, which I actually love. The staff was friendly. My goto place for travel essentials. This Flatiron location is my favorite in the city. If you're a tourist, you'll probably like the Soho location. I believe it's bigger and has more of the hustle. But if you're from the neighborhood, you'll appreciate not being elbowed and pushed in the crowds, while quietly browsing through by yourself and just a few others in peace, and being able to see everything on the shelves. Plus not too many people go to this location so they tend to have everything I need in stock! When I come here I buy in bulk; ten of everything. They also make good gifts. I love Muji. I found wonderful things at the Cooper Union and 40th street location. Well that being said the employees at the 19th street location are not as helpful or accommodating. On a cold evening their location was near by so I went to get one of the stackable shelves that I needed. I ask one sales girl if they had the one I needed, she quickly said " no we had them but were out of stock". Fine. As I turn to leave I look to my right and there is like three dozen of the shelf that I wanted right there in front of me. So I asked another sales person could he give me one of them. He quickly told me " Oh, they are just display, also I don't know where to look for the price.. sorry!" Seriously?!!!! I worked in retail. You cannot tell me there is not a price list to look up, or he could have called another location to get a price check. So I won't be going back to the 19th street Muji location. It's no secret to my friends that I aspire to be the female version of George Clooney in "Up in the Air" (except without the whole cocoon-of-self-banishment thing). I want to be a perfectly organized traveler, with my underwear, socks and t-shirts folded neatly into marked containers and placed inside a perfectly organized piece of luggage, the aesthetic of which telegraphs my perfect organization (and taste) to all those waiting behind me at the JFK metal detectors. I want to never sweat my way through another security line, want to settle into my seat calmly, un-crinkled boarding pass in hand, pull my feather-light laptop out of my impeccably-designed carryon, and begin to tap out another Yelp review full of dry wit. Unfortunately, my reality's a far cry from this. More often than not, I arrive at the airport panting, passport half hanging out of my peacoat, feeling lucky that I remembered to put on clothing (much less pack some) before my 6am flight. But in the meantime, there's Muji, where I can daydream about this future me, a girl who's gotten her sh** together with gear from this store. I can wander around thinking about the day when I will wear only impossibly-soft basic t-shirts that can be folded up into a ball the size of an egg. When I will transport them around in my travels in a lovely, reasonably-priced, Japanese-designed carryon in hunter green. And when I will carry a minimalistic notebook and high-quality pen at all times, for all of my important, travel-related thoughts. Muji, I think, is a store for people like me. People who like Japanese things (albeit ones made cheaply in China). And white t-shirts. And good pens. People who aspire, puzzlingly, to be more effective nerds than they are. Someone told me that they had great pens here and upon learning that this place was Japanese, I knew they were probably right. And not only that, the artist in me told me that there would be other awesome stuff in this store. I don't know how I've never heard of Muji before. Shame on me. The store itself is modern, minimalistic with very definite Japanese tone/vibe to it with the wood panels, and the cute little notebooks and containers of pens. I did find it a bit odd that they also sold clothing but from what I saw, their clothes looked pretty trendy so... pens, notebooks and a hoodie. Who knew? Well, I ended up spending over $50 on pens and two little rubber stamps as a gift to my sister who is into card making as a serious hobby. My review here is for my new wheely bag from Muji: It held up pretty well on a 2-week trip during which I had to move five (5!) times (3 hotels, 1 friend's house, 1 apartment rental thanks to Airbnb). There are some scuff marks from other bags being shoved next to it that I need to attack with some cleaner but on the whole it doesn't look ill used. It's also just a pleasure to wheel around. The four wheels make life much easier. So, about the store: They helped me get the bag, but the clerk said "I'll get you a new one" and gave me a box that, when I opened it at home, contained the wrong bag (a much smaller one).
