Hands down one of best sushi spots ive been to in the east bay. The shop is very small. Bar seated about 4 and there was 3 tables of 2 inside. I ordered the sushi sashimi chefs combo. Piling on with the praise. We picked this place for it's gluten-free-friendly reputation. Was amazed by how GOOD the sushi tasted, especially the salmon roe nigiri, which, I think, was treated with a marinade that really enhanced the flavor. OMG what a great fit for me. Pretty legit sushi (definitely the best from Hayward to Fremont) in a not-so-hot spot in Dtown Hayward. Put it this way, if this were in a posh neighborhood of Oakland or SF, the prices would be close to double, I remember they opened this location around the pandemic years of 20-21' and they were strictly doing take-out boxes of quality sushi. They started to do in-house table service within this year, and that's what eventually got me in. Small place but very cool. Reminds me of hip yet not crazy traditional sushi places in urban areas. Decent sake list, super small menu and awesome playlist. I just couldn't help but have an awesome time eating the style of sushi I prefer to the mellow vibe of Lenny Kravitz's "It ain't over til its over" and MJ's Thriller's 'The Girl is Mine'. Not your average sushi outing playlist and I was diggin' it. Anyhoo here are some tips that'll either make you a fan of this place (if you're a legit OG foodie) or dislike it (you're a cheapie and eat for quantity). You do you. -Only nigiris and sashimi here. Oh and some simple maki/rolls (3-4 ingredients max) -Zero Americanized monster rolls. No Lion Kings, no Caterpillars, no Philly, no Cherry Blossom. You can't even get a Cali or Spider Roll here...AND I ain't mad at that! -No cooked foods, so no bentos or tempura. I think the only thing cooked here is a Chawanmushi a la carte, which is a savory steamed custard. Other than that, you betta be down for RAW-ness. (yes I'm tryna scare a segment of the masses). General digs laid out, here are some specific tries to be rated: Nigiri Combo ($25/5+*) I think this is what the majority of people get here as it is such an incredible find. For this price, you get 7 petite nigiris. They'll offer about 8-10 different fishes per day. You can choose your set up or just choose 'chef's choice'. Now when you do choose on your own, you can't repeat fishes, like get 5 toro and 2 blue fins. Again, I ain't mad at this. You'll also get one of their small rolls, which now makes this $25 tag to be quite special. The roll I got for the evening was their Salmon Roll with supposedly Shiso leaf, but I tasted no Shiso. But even tho their rolls and nigiri are crazy petite, like literal one-biters, they are almost perfect in construction and composition. First their rice texture is perfect. It is seasoned nicely and the rice even has a darker tint to it, so it isn't straight white. Not sure if it is a different type of vinegar used or a touch of soy sauce but it isn't salty. Chef's offerings the night I went were Blue Fin Tuna (OG maguro), Kanpachi, Salmon, Ocean Trout, Scallop, Arctic Char and Toro. All very nicely cut and super fresh and formed perfectly onto the shari (formed seasoned rice). Dassai Junmai Daiginjo Sake 300ml ($45/5*) Perfect sake for such an outing and perfect size too. It's double the price of my main plate, but I wouldn't hesitate in repeating this every time. Negi Toro Hosomaki ($15/4*) Got this as an ender, and even though it is what stuffed me, it wasn't as mind blowing as expected. First off they use actual chunks so it isn't minced up like 90% of other places. This also isn't the crazy marbled toro, not crazy fatty or oily, so to me it just seemed like a high grade tuna. Still super delish tho as their proportioning to rice to fish to crisp nori is high level. I'm curious to see how this place evolves. It seems they are still trying to figure out their in-house dining scheme, and I'm sure they already have some serious fans lined up. It's just that I'm not sure if the suburban masses are down for this. I was craving some nigiri and had to stop by for the 7 piece nigiri + maki combo ($25). I went for hamachi, toro, black snapper, amberjack, ocean trout, arctic char, and hokkaido scallop. The maki rolls is the chef's choice and seemed to be hamachi. I ordered for takeout so I can't comment on dining in, though the restaurant is on the smaller side. I would say the pieces are on the smaller side, but are higher quality than most. I love the fact that you can taste the freshness of the fish and that each nigiri is unique. They share the same rice base (I think) and don't need any additional sauce in my opinion and I enjoy that you can choose the nigiri you want. The nigiri and maki make for a pretty filling meal, though I'm always dying for more! My favorite was the hamachi, toro, and black snapper but they were all delicious. First time here, and was not disappointed at all! We had a group of 3 girls walk in right when they open on Saturday and was seated immediately. It wasn't terribly busy at all for the lunch hour. As for parking, I found street parking and saw there's a sign for public parking around the area. This restaurant is intimate with the limited tables, and there's also seats at the sushi bar. The staff were all very friendly, attentive, and quick. As for the food, I got the nigiri combo and after returning from Japan last month, this fulfilled my sushi cravings and you can just taste the high quality of the fish and rice. I'm usually not a fan of wasabi paste but I did ask if they use fresh wasabi for their sushi, which they do. I can only handle fresh wasabi and it wasn't overbearing at all. You can now eat in the restaurant but it was empty when I went, seems like folks tend to order take out. The fish was very fresh and the rice is well reasoned. The ratio was slightly off for me, I prefer a little less rice but delicious nonetheless. It's a bit in the pricier side, after tax the total came out to a little over $50. To be very frank, I wanted to gate keep this spot as long as I could but there have been so many people who reviewed this spot that I NOW HAVE TO MAKE A RESERVATION, so thank you, but it's okay because this spot is amazing and they deserve all the popularity. This spot has to be one of my ultimate FAVORITE SPOTS EVER for sushi. Ever since coming here to eat, I literally have not been able to go to any other sushi spot. You can't beat the quality of fish they have, it's so fresh and delicious. I remember coming here for the first time w/ my sister and since then, we came regularly like almost every week. RIP TO MY WALLET.. but it's okie bc it's good food heh. This location in Hayward is a lot smaller than the Oakland/Berkeley location so it's better to have a reservation in order to get a table. They have three employees, I wish I had gotten their names but they are AMAZING. So happy to see a second location of Mujiri open up! I've been to the one in Oakland a few times but not recently, since it's a bit far away. But this location is more accessible and closer to home. They just had their official opening on Tuesday and they are only doing takeout at the moment. It looks like they still have a few renovations that are needed inside, but it was nice and clean. There is only street parking available but there is an open parking lot around the corner. There were two folks working at the time I ordered and they were very nice and friendly. They were able to prepare my order without any wasabi. You are able to place your orders via phone or online. Of course we ordered 2 nigiri combos and some additional a la carte nigiri. The combos are such a good deal at $25! The fish is super fresh and I love the vinegar mixture in the rice. My favorite pieces were definitely the Hamachi and the Iwana. For me, I wanted this for dinner, so I chose 6:15pm. Your food can be ready earlier or later than designated time depending on how busy mujuri is. For me, it was actually 5 min early :) There were 2 people working at the shop, someone was working on the sushi pieces and one on the cashier. Both greeted me in Japanese as I walked in and the cashier cheerfully handed me my food! Food: Walking from the restaurant back to my apartment, I was a little worried because the smell of fish was extremely strong (vs other places I've tried) from my box of nigiri. However, once I got back and started eating, the smell was no longer an issue. My favorite piece has to be the toro!! Saved the best for last! Salmon has always been my favorite type of fish, so I loved those pieces and the rolls on the side were deliciously fatty! Also, I think there was an extra flavor in the little rolls, maybe perilla? Anyway, I think that was a wonderful complimentary flavor to go with the fish. One that stood out to me, the scallop. I typically like scallop, but this piece was a bit overwhelming. I ate half and fed the other half to my boyfriend and he was surprised how strong it's flavor was Ambiance: I didn't stay too long, just picked up my food. I made a reservation for dinner here and I'm glad I did bc when we walked in it was already full. It's a small restaurant with ~20 seats. But since we had a reservation, we got seated right away. The service was good and the food was amazing. I love that you can pick your own fish even though it's omakase. And you cannot beat the price!! The rolls were phenomenal, too. Went for Lunch Food - 5/5. Wonderful and elegant sushi. Both the nigiris and rolls had excellent ratios and was shaped very evenly forming a beautiful aesthetic. Each fish was fresh, melted in your mouth, and had their own distinct flavor. My favorites were the tuna for the great flavor that melted in your mouth and the squid for its fun texture. Rice had just the right amount of seasoning and I appreciated their use of red vinegar, giving it the distinct brown color. The negi toro roll was buttery with a rich tuna flavor, balanced out by scallions. Service - 4/5. Friendly and quick service. Despite the few staff, service was good and the food came out in a timely fashion. Value - 5/5. Their nigiri combo offers 7 pieces and a roll. What makes them special is that you get to choose your nigiri! All this level of variety and high quality sushi is marked at a very reasonable $25. Wow! We were looking for a sushi place in the area and found Mujiri on Yelp not expecting to find a new favorite sushi spot in the Bay Area. We love that they pretty much only had nigiri sushi (and no California type of sushi) on the menu, which also means their stars are for their sushi (and not other types of food). I don't get uni often because I don't like it when it isn't sweet, but they had Santa Barbara uni, and it didn't disappoint. We were surprised to see that they were using red vinegar, something not often found in the Bay Area. I like red vinegar because it has a more subtle tang to it. The spot was also pretty intimate with just a bar and a few tables. We were able to walk in and sit at the bar at 6:10 on a Saturday. I feel like I rarely give 5 stars in the Bay Area. Came here last week on a Tuesday for dinner with a party of 2. I've been to the Oakland location before and gave it 5 stars, so I was excited to try this new location. I ordered the nigiri combo (I did the self-selection with salmon, kurodai, kanpachi, hamachi, toro, hotate, and iwana, but my friend did the chef's choice - both are great choices depending on what you prefer). The nigiri combo comes with the daily maki - our day was hamachi) We also shared an additional toro maki (I'm not sure if this is always on the menu - their makis seem to change?) Pros: - Surprisingly not crowded on a weeknight! I know the Oakland location is always very crowded even on weekdays, so a reservation is usually helpful and they don't let you sit down for long. But thankfully that's NOT a problem here in Hayward! - The sushi was SUPER FRESH and delicious - I think that it's reasonably priced considering you're getting nigiri-grade sushi, $25 for the nigiri combo is pretty good. Take note though that the maki is small bites. Surprisingly though I didn't leave hungry (but my husband, a larger white man, likely would leave hungry haha so order a bit more!) - I appreciate that the menu is pretty limited, I think it allows them to do everything quite well - The service was pretty fast and very kind, the QR code menu is easy to use. - Easy parking - there's a lot across the street so you don't necessarily have to do street parking if you don't want to. - Great for a party of 2, lots of 2 person tables despite the shop being kind of small. - I don't remember the food coming out super quickly, but I don't think I waited long either - since there's only a couple chefs working I would say it was pretty timely. Cons: - the corner spot by the window can get kind of hot if it's sunny out, it didn't feel like there was a lot of air circulation - Almost a little TOO quiet if there's only a couple parties - so I didn't feel too comfortable like laughing super loud with my friend haha. I kind of wish there was some light music playing in the background - There was unfortunately a tad too much wasabi in each piece of my nigiri combo - I usually like a hint of wasabi but there was so much it kinda made me need to swig some water after each bite. I 'm going to chop this up to being a one time error hopefully? I felt like it almost overwhelmed the fish Overall, the fish was super fresh even if it was a bit heavy on the wasabi.
