I eat a lot of sushi. My new favorite sushi restaurant is Mujiri. Why? Well, to start with, the fish is fresh, and the cuts are quality. But that's true of dozens of good sushi restaurants. The things that make Mujiri stand out are value, attention to details and focus on fish. Value. I've been to Mujiri twice, and both times I had the same main dish. The value proposition is the sashimi combo ($35) - 16 pieces of sashimi (2 pieces each of 8 varieties). Wait, you say, that's no bargain. But every piece of sashimi in the combo is a premium cut, and some of them are absolutely wonderful (like the umi masu or ocean trout, which is seared with a blow torch for a great smoky flavor). No boiled shrimp or tamago (egg) in this combo. Just really good sashimi. Attention to detail. Sure, the fish is top notch, but Mujiri excels in the details, details, details. Every Japanese restaurant provides wasabi, but Mujiri uses fresh wasabi, and the difference is very obvious. For a lot of Japanese restaurants, the sushi rice is an afterthought. Mujiri's rice ($5) is incredible - they use a special vinegar which gives the rice a brownish-tint, and the rice is just right - fluffy and not over- or under- cooked. Even the Kaiso salad ($12) was special - several types of seaweed, sliced cucumbers and a balanced dressing. These details elevate the dinner from just great fish to a great meal! Focus on fish. When you look at the menu, you know this is a serious sushi restaurant because there are no Flaming Samarai rolls or mixed tempura or tonkatsu ramen to be seen. It's just the fish, so the focus is squarely on the sashimi and nigiri, and Mujiri doesn't disappoint. Almost forgot to mention the Negi Toro Mini Handroll (2 pieces for $15) which was divine. Some particulars. Only 10 counter seats and 10 table seats. It's not the type of sushi bar where you can chat much with the sushi chefs, so I'd recommend sitting at a table and having a little more room. I was able to make same-day reservations (even on a Saturday) through Tock, which is also used for paying your bill. $3 for hot green tea. I've been able to find street parking (but I went early both times). Here's how good it was - came back for a second time just 3 days after the first time. I've been a loyal visitor to Mujiri since they first opened during the pandemic. I was so excited to bring my family who were visiting from out of town. However, the staff here really don't want your business. The host had told my party of three that it would be about an hour wait. We expected a wait, and that sounded reasonable. But multiple parties of two who arrived after us were seated first, and not even in a way that made sense (i.e. gaps of two left at the bar, when they could have seated one of those people just one seat down to accommodate a party of three). There were over 6 open seats, just none with three together. We waited over an hour and a half, and asked the host again how much longer it would be. He just responded with indifference, and said "I said it would be about an hour. I can't tell you how much longer it will be." We decided to go to another restaurant nearby to see how long the wait there would be. We did NOT ask to be removed from the list. In that time, we got an alert that the host had taken us off the waitlist. I'm not sure if the owner is reading these reviews, but I really hope they will retrain the host. After how much I had hyped up the place, that was extremely embarrassing. Edit: it's funny to read the review below that said that a host asked a guest to move to the bar because their table needed to be used for a reservation. Great spot for your sashimi/nigiri splurge. Portions are small but delicious. I don't get why people think this place is affordable. Expect to pay $40-50pp and leave hungry. 8 nigiri + a basic roll for $25 is about $2.5 per nigiri and $5 for the roll. Yes, the quality is good, but some of the reviews here make it sound like a better deal than it is. I personally wouldn't order the cheesecake again. Literally as long as my pinky, I had a pretty good laugh at how ridiculously small it was. My girlfriend and I had to take tiny slices off it at a time to make it last. The sushi rice is a little unique here. I think they add memmi sauce to the rice, which is actually something my aunt did way back in the day. Adds a very light taste of soy sauce to the rice, so you could probably forgo dipping your fish in soy sauce. Sidenote: if you ever want a delicious quick meal, a basic fried rice dish with eggs, three teaspoons of memmi sauce, and a drizzle of sesame oil is amaaaaazing. Memmi sauce is so underrated! I ordered on a Saturday for afternoon pick up around 5:30pm. I arrived at 5:15pm, my order wasn't ready yet. Which is very good because they didn't premake my order, I was early to arrive. The sushi chefs prepared my order asap, I probably waited another 15min for it to be ready. The website pick up time is on time. It's a small sushi shop, decent size sushi bar where you can sit and watch the chef make your omakase. I have to try it some day. I used to really love this place. More than any place in the area, Muji reminds me of authentic sushi in Japan. However, the cleanliness is not up to Japanese standards, and maybe not even up to the low bar of cleanliness in America. A recent visit there was ruined by a swarm of jumping bugs, which turned out to be fleas. I did some research into the implications, which I won't horrify you with here. Another thing about the cleanliness at Muji is the smell. Increasingly, the restaurant smells like a combination of something bad, plus Fabuloso (which also smells bad). The bathroom is also not that clean, another red flag. I really like the concept of this restaurant, but I don't plan to go back until they clean up. read more

Turns out this place is perfect for me because they only serve sushi and not tempura so there is no chance of gluten cross-contamination and they have tamari (wheat free) soy sauce. I've been dying to try Mujiri- saw it on instagram and had heard great things. We made a reservation for the counter at 7, glad we did bc there was a huge wait for walk-ups. They definitely do a ton of take out too. The restaurant is small but everything moves briskly, we ordered and dove right in. We got the toro hand roll (not pictured), the nigiri combo, and two extra rolls. All of the fish was outstanding, I appreciated that they give you the option to add on their more premium fish. The extra rolls we ordered were HUGE compared to the ones that came in the combo. All in all will definitely be back. I was extremely disappointed today and had a very negative experience at Mujiri. Not only was the food not great, but I chose this restaurant based on the Yelp reviews to meet two friends who I had not seen in some time. I had not been to this restaurant before. When I arrived, the restaurant was pretty empty, but my friends were running 10 minutes behind. So, I asked for a table for 3 and was told (although most seats were empty) that I could not be seated without my full party present. I said okay and waited inside near the door. After waiting for about five minutes (during that time no other new patrons entered the restaurant), the hostess came up and asked me to leave and wait OUTSIDE the restaurant INSTEAD. When I noted that one friend was pulling up shortly, the hostess stated that things can change within minutes and still refused to seat me. read more

Distinguishable visually that the skin is still on the fish. Our waitress was very pretty, and so was 2 others. Imagine they leave after I publish my review, now won't that be funny. Literally just wanted to give them a shoutout. DO make a reservation online! I believe you can only make up to 2 people resv at the sushi bar, but more than two people for their tables. Small restaurant, but being from SF and looking up the other sushi restaurants close by doing the hw, it appears from photos of other sushi restaurants close by are similarly small (aka one sushi bar and a handful of 3-5 tables max). Get the yuzu cheesecake; it's good. Is it the best sushi I've ever had? No. But I strongly rec as a standout in Oakland. Very solid 4.5 stars. It causes confusion for the people on the Yelp waitlist because you aren't aware what your actual wait time is. The people with reservations have priority and they don't tell who's ahead of you. The sushi is melt-in-your-mouth and not fishy at all! I also love that they give you a roll with every nigiri combo (pictured). I ordered the nigiri 7pc. Note that you can't double up (for ex. If you like salmon, you can only get one salmon nigiri, not two). I chose 4 of the fish selections and did chefs choice for the rest. Every single one was so delicious.
