I just finished up hiking around in the area from Devils Postpile to Rainbow Falls and finally to Red Meadows where this small café is located. It is really just a small window with connected camp store; nothing more. After a hot hike, the Strawberry Malt Shake was a godsend! Did I really pay $11 for this? I honestly cared not since it provided such immense satisfaction. They also offer ice cream scoops, pie slices, root beer floats, and other cold beverages. I even spied burgers and hotdogs on the menu but I feel like a barebones café such as this wouldn't have the best when it comes to these products. I sat out front at some of the wooden benches there while waiting for the shuttle and observing the PCT'ers and their gear while at their refuel stop. When we were there, no seating are allowed inside. Pretty much order at the window and then wait for your food. Food is very plain and pricey, but I guess that's what you get for being the only restaurant in the park. Very average food to me. read more

I don't understand the bad reviews but then again I didn't order a milkshake. This place saved my life after our hike. Someone went drinking the night before and got a little dehydrated after hiking for miles. I guzzled down 4 glasses of water and was ready to eat. I ordered up the tuna melt and it was good, no complaints from anyone in our party. The service was good, the joint was adorable and it's in the perfect location for those who don't want to lug food in. read more

We hiked over from Horseshoe Lake to Red's Meadow on Friday. Our friend, Penny, told us she had the best chocolate malt there just a few days earlier. So, we split a tuna melt with chips, a Pepsi, and a chocolate malt. The malt was excellent! I wanted another! IT was nice and thick and malty. The tuna melt was average. It wasn't on the flat top grill long enough as the tuna was cold and cheese not melted. If cooked a few minutes longer, it would have been very good. Bonus points for the nice customer service. Laura Jean was very sweet and checked on us often. They kept our water glasses full. We'll be back! read more

Love Mulehouse Cafe. Located at Red's Meadow Resort in Mammoth, this is just a great little cafe. If you are camping down in Red's Meadow it is easy to get to. If you are taking the mandatory shuttle in, you jump on for $7.00 per person, take the shuttle to the end of the road and you will find yourself at this little treaure. After a nice breakfast, hike to Rainbow Falls or Devil's Postpile. Every year we are in Mammoth, the trip is not the same unless we go have breakfast at Mulehouse. The cafe opens at 7 a.m. and once inside you are transported to a different era. This is old time with a lot of history about the Tanner family and the area. You seat yourself if the place isn't packed and the service is friendly with a smile as if you have sat down with family. The food is traditional all american and great. This last trip, I ordered oatmeal and our server asked how I would like it cooked, did I like it thicker or on the thinner side and what would I like it served with, brown sugar, honey, raisins or nuts. Mr. B had the eggs, hashbrowns, bacon combo and the other Mr. B had eggs and pancakes. The pancakes are flaky, moist and buttery. They cover the entire plate, so bring our appetite. Early in the morning when the sun is just coming up, you can smell campfires from the campground and cabins, backpackers are enjoying a nice hot breakfast before heading into the back country and the honest to goodness cowboys are having a nice cup of coffee before heading out on a pack trip. The atmosphere is great, scenery is amazing and the breakfast just tastes so much better in this little cafe. read more

Very good spot for great burger and shake after a hike! I had a hamburger with coleslaw and hubby had a cheeseburger w potato salad and we both give thumbs way up. Burgers are large with good buns and patty with freshest lettuce, tomatoes and onions. Burgers done straight up and done right which is harder to find than one would expect. Malt shake hit the spot too. Everything costs a bit more but it's to be understandable considering the mountaintop location. We were told by many people that the milk shakes there were the best in the world! Not to be missed!! A must!! We hiked from stop 6 to the post pile then down to rainbow falls. Our daughter (9) & son (16) were both very much looking forward to "the world's best milk shake" as a special treat for doing this hike. . . What a let down! At $6.50 each too you can imagine how excited we all became, I mean a milk shake that cost that much has to be something right?!?! Wrong! 2 chocolate and 1 strawberry, tasted like they just added Quick power (you know the quick bunny stuff) to Walmart ice cream! ! It was very disappointing. Should have just taken my kids to the store next door and gotten them an ice cream there, that's what I got and I was not disappointed The store however was pretty cool! read more

When you've been out exploring the mountains eating trail mix all day, any hot food sounds good, so the Mulehouse has a distinct advantage there...hungry hikers aren't that picky. That said, we found our meal here to be totally satisfying, with a surprise ending. Having missed out on the family-style dinner of the night (you have to make reservations by 3pm), we were left ordering off the grill menu, which is, frankly, not that exciting. Burger, burger, patty melt. Nothing exceptional, nothing terrible, just solid diner food. But then we were tempted by the pie listed on the menu board, and we each decided to order a slice. Well, we love pie in our family and our expectations are pretty high, but when the waitress walked out with these ENORMOUS slices of pie piled high with ice cream, our jaws all dropped. We could have easily shared one. We unbuckled our belts and dug in. I don't know about the milkshakes that everyone is complaining about, but the pie is fantastic! Overall, this is just a great place to take a break while visiting Red's Meadow. Take a hot shower in the shower house, stock up at the store, and nosh on giant slices of pie at the Mulehouse Cafe. read more

I was informed that this cafe had very good and homemade food. So, my family and I decided to eat dinner there. I had the hot dog which was actually pretty good, but a tad overpriced for the quality. My brother ordered the cheeseburger, which was very flat and not good. With and overall experience of dinner being okay, we decided to also go there for breakfast. Breakfast here was horrible. All of our food was cold and tasted very bad. The cost of the food for the quality was outrageous. A side of two pieces of bacon cost approx $5 and tasted old. Overall, all of the food (except their boysenberry pie which was fantastic) was bad and I was very disappointed. read more

Maybe my opinion is slanted, as I was coming off a 6 day hike on the JMT, so at that point, they could have served me a bear turd in an old hiking boot and I would have thought it was great. As it was though, this was my first hot meal in a long time, so I thought everything was excellent. The hikers special was steep 14.95 for three pancakes three eggs and a couple of sausage, but lets be real - they could charge you more and a lot of hikers would pay it, because the words "mountain house" or "dehydrated food" don't appear anywhere on the menu. I cant attest to their lunch, but I thought their breakfast was pretty good. I literally stumbled into the place. the open door had a step up that you will not notice and I literally stumbled in. The staff just looked at me and were expressionless which made me feel odd at first. But, I guess they've seen that happen like 200,00 times already, so watching tired hikers stumble into their café probably got old for them after the 100,000 time. The lady who served me was polite though and she was always there to refill my coffee, which I had her do like 6 times. She basically got tired of walking off and just stood by me as I downed cup after cup. I did mention I was on the JMT, right? I ate like a savage animal, which in a way was sad, but in another way, I didn't really care. I was surprised at how much I missed someone else cooking me a meal that didn't come in a 16 oz packet. I think for all the hiker traffic they get through there, they do a good job of keeping their patience. If I had continued on the JMT, I would have stayed here for the night. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE Prior to ordering I made sure to ask the waitress what all was on their cheeseburger. (I'm allergic to Mayo) and the waitress did not list mayo so I did not have any special requests with my order. When they brought my burger with mayo, I politely asked for another. They then told me they would make me a whole new burger with new meat and everything, which I appreciated....However about a minute later I was served the exact same burger (they put an extra slice of cheese on top to cover up the mayo) but I could still see it all over! Extremely horrible service for them to offer to do one thing for me and then try to play me like that. read more

This is a small cafe in the middle of a National Monument. The food and famous milkshakes/malts are very good, but a little expensive. It has an authentic outdoorsy vibe, old articles framed on the wall, thru-hikers chatting about their travels during the summer. Your experience here will largely be determined by how much work it took you to get there. The people who love this place likely did a great deal of work to get there, i.e. hiked for days on the PCT or JMT. For them, this is the first hot meal they've had in a while that didn't come out of a bag so it's wonderful! Personally, we had hiked several hours in the park and had just trudged up the hill from Rainbow Falls on a very warm day. That being pretty far for me, my malt was exceptional. Conversely, if you rode the shuttle down from the Adventure Center, walked the half-mile round trip to Devil's Postpile and then shuttled down to Red's Meadow, you might be disappointed. read more

The food is good. I enjoy riding my bike here to grab breakfast or having lunch and homemade pie and Ice cream after a trail run or hike. Worthy of at least three stars but worth more. read more

They have the best coffee here! Its a small place with a counter and five tables but its a nice place to stop when hiking reds meadow in the morning. Cooking is very home style and prices are a bit high however its a tradition to stop by. We always have a good time. There are also a lot of historical photos of the area on the wall which are always interesting to look at. read more

No frills old school American diner, and a fun spot to eat. Nothing fancy, but a perfect place to stop for lunch when out exploring.

We went to Mulehouse after a long tiring hike from Devils Postpile, to Rainbow Falls and back, having not eaten lunch and starving. We had a really good experience here! The milkshakes are huge and perfect for sharing. The ice creams are of really good quality and our server, Wendy, was so attentive and kind. Arrived at Red's Meadow on day 4 of our JMT thru-hike and was looking forward to a hot cooked meal after the bleak stretch of trail around Devils Postpile. The cafe serves the same menu for lunch and dinner between 11-7 pm. Ordered a pretty bland patty melt for dinner that managed to satisfy but was kinda bummed that I couldn't order a side of fries. Instead, they offer a bag of potato chips or a homemade potato salad. Prices are definitely steeper than usual for basic diner fare but given the circumstances, our expectations weren't too high. The next morning we also had breakfast (starting at 7 am) and were happy that we did. The "Packer's Special" is the way to go although the french toast was also pretty good. The most expensive, no good breakfast I've ever had. If you're going to charge 12 bucks for bacon, eggs toast and potatoes, at least make it fresh... Very disappointed... You'd be better off to buy it all at a store and cook it on a campfire... At least if you burn the potatoes to crisp, like they did, they only cost 3 bucks for an entire bag and you can try again.
