What an old-fashioned gem of a restaurant! Today my friend and I tried out this classic Williamsburg breakfast/Lunch spot and it hit the spot! We had a 20 minute wait for a table so we walked around inside checked out the gift shop. They have a variety of jewelry, food items, and trinkets available in the gift shop. We were seated after our little wait and immediately got our drink order taken. Our server was quick to come over and also get our meal order. I ordered the Melinda's special which included a drink, fruit salad, cup of Brunswick stew, two ham biscuits, and a slice of pie. All was very good and I subbed the Brunswick stew for the chicken & rice soup! I love how the ham is nice and thinly sliced and the chocolate pie was to die for! I need to go back and try all the flavors of pie! My dining companion loved her BLT sandwich and said the bacon was cooked nice and crisp! Lunch at Old Chickahominy House is such a delight! Going there is like stepping back into your Auntie's home for some wholesome comfort food. The restaurant is located on Jamestown Road in Williamsburg in a cute building that was partly built repurposing materials from older buildings in the area, such as Carter's Grove. In addition to the restaurant, Old Chickahominy House also includes a gift shop that sells household decor items as well as pieces of ladies clothing, jewelry, coastal decorations, tea towels, and tea, among other items. It's fun to peruse the shop while waiting for your table. They serve breakfast in the morning and lunch after breakfast. For lunch, we really enjoy the Miss Melinda's Special. It starts with a little fruit salad comprising peaches and a slice of pineapple on a piece of lettuce, covered with a mayonnaise type of dressing and cheddar cheese. I know it sounds strange, but it's refreshingly tasty. You also receive a cup of Brunswick Stew and two ham biscuits. Delicious! The meal comes with a piece of pie, with your choices including buttermilk that tastes like lemon (yum!), coconut, chocolate, and a fruit pie, like cherry. Plus, you receive hot or iced tea and coffee. You also can carry out their menu items. I often order a container of Brunswick Stew and some ham biscuits for guests coming in late from out of town. Maybe they've got some great southern cuisine but they sure don't have southern hospitality! It was our mistake arriving at 10:45 and not checking their hours in advance. But we were weary travelers. The staff greeted us with "How can we help you?" that led us to immediately question if we misunderstood and it was some kind of private space or we needed reservations as we saw some business folks dining. We answered, "we are looking to eat?" She then informed us breakfast menu ended at 10:30 and lunch menu would begin until 11:30 but offered cocktails. I said thanks we're just coffee drinkers and looked to my husband to see how hungry he was and whether he was good with waiting longer to eat. She was a bit impatient as we processed our decision. I honestly just wanted coffee and would be happy to eat lunch when the kitchen was ready and hubby agreed, which is what we told her. She said ok 2 coffees. My husband stepped out to the car for just a second and as I stood waiting for directions from her, she walked past me without speaking and slammed the door closed he had left ajar, leaving me awkwardly in the foyer. Needless to say, I joined the hubby and departed. Sure we could've checked the hours and avoided the interruption to their break. But, we're not the ones in the hospitality business. It wasn't just what was said or did, but the vibe that came with it. It's our 5th visit to Williamsburg and we wondered why we had never discovered this place previously. It came up through a FB magazine post. And we're staying at Chickahominy Riverfront Park so we thought it would be nice to match it up. 1607 Coffee Shop just 1/4mi down won the business that day! read more

My Bride and I love this place, but it's been years since we were in town and free at breakfast time. Today we actually got here half an hour before they opened at 8:30, so we had quite an appetite by the time we were seated! We had barely sat down when a server swung by the table and filled our cups with delicious coffee. Moments later a second server came to take our order - I mean, we hadn't been in the restaurant four minutes; these folks are that good! I ordered the Old Chickahominy Breakfast- Virginia country ham, bacon, and sausage with two eggs (over easy for me), grits, hot biscuits and coffee for just $14.95. My idea of Heaven. If you can't eat your grits with a fork, you don't want them anyway, and these were spot on. The ham was perfect- thin slices of salty, meaty goodness- and the bacon was cooked with exactly the right balance of crispy and chewy. A word about Chickahominy House biscuits- they are squarish and flattish, not at all what a traditional Southern biscuit is supposed to be. But they're exactly what they need to be. My Bride got the country bacon and two eggs with hot biscuits ($8.95) and added a bowl of grits ($1.50). As we were finishing our breakfast, she said "oh- they have pie!" I asked the server, who said she knew they had a couple slices of cherry pie, and she would see if any of the others were ready yet. We ended up getting a slab of coconut pie, still warm from the oven, with whipped cream. The total for this remarkable feast was $35 including tax! I stopped here with my family along the way to Jamestown Settlement. It was a Sunday and nice to have a place to go since a lot of restaurants were not open yet. THere are no reservations -- it's total old school where you walk in and put your name on a waiting list. There are a lot of positives about this place. I just love the family-run vibe. You can tell the owners put a lot of heart into the place. My kids loved the store and of course wanted to buy everything despite not knowing what a lot of things were used for (aka the soap holder and the wine opener!). There are a lot of cute items and Christmas decorations in the back. We were told a 30 minute wait, but it was actually closer to 20 minutes which was great since the kids were HUNGRY! I would agree with one of the other reviewers that the upsell was pretty strong. I felt like the servers were constantly trying to coax us to add in extras or the higher priced items. That's fine, we knew what we wanted! They had a nice kids menu and the portions were massive so we could split their meal, which was nice. Prices were also very reasonable. My partner got the chicken pot pie, which was hands down the best item on the menu. The kids split the BLT (also tasty). I got the ham salad sandwich, which was honestly not good at all. I also got 2 biscuits, which I was going to give to the kids while we waited but everything came together. The kids didn't want the biscuits so I ate them. Or maybe I should say ate half of one. They really weren't to my taste. They were flat, dry and dense. I think I just ordered the wrong things but part of the reason the experience isn't 5 stars. Next time maybe I'll get the stew since that seems very popular. I wouldn't recommend the ham salad since it was incredibly salty. Everyone else tasted it and agreed, with the kids spitting it out (oh the drama of four year olds!). One last thing, there is a cat roaming around. I'm not sure if the cat was having a bad day but it was definitely not friendly. It attempted to attack a couple waiting for their table and they warned me about it. In an old colonial house, this restaurant makes you feel like you are having a home-cooked meal with the comforts of your family and friends. Perfect for tourists exploring the colonial era or locals like me and my family, who go here multiple times a year, and are regulars on Christmas eve. Cute, cottage gift shop and restaurant combo! The welcoming porch lures you in! This colonial house is full of lovely gifts and souvenirs, but it's really awkward and difficult to navigate. The aisles are narrow and if you are shopping, you can't help but walk by diners trying to enjoy their meals. Servers are traipsing through walkways with trays of food and it's quite a wonder there aren't more collisions in this tightly packed place. I'm sure the diners can't have a quiet, pleasant meal with people shopping all around them. Whoever designed the layout of this store wasn't thinking of the dining patrons. We did purchase several items, ornaments, jewelry, decorations etc. and the lines were long. One point of interest is the incredible teacup light fixture in the "lobby" in the middle of the store. It's pretty cool!! The restroom is located in an awkward little hallway near the kitchen and near the stairs so the line blocks the walkway and it gets congested in that area. The food is your typical country fare, with hearty breakfasts and lunches... the ham and the Brunswick stew are favorites here! So if you want a more subdued meal, I suggest coming off season, or not at regular meal times. I'd come back, but be sure to avoid the crowds! read more

Th meal began with what I will term a Southern Ladies' Salad, fruit and a leaf of lettuce with Mayonnaise dressing. A slice of for dessert pie is included. I really enjoyed the Brunswick stew. The Miss Melinda special has to be the best value in town and packed with flavor. The dining room is much nicer than the Williamsburg taverns in the colonial area, with paneling from Carters Grove. But the pie is easily 12/10. The coconut custard is to die for, and the sweet potato today was perfection. The staff are also lovely, kind people. Service is fast, so don't be worried if there is a short wait at busy times. I've been eating here over 38 years. If you're considering trying this place, do it! read more

The food is pure Southern comfort, the service is swift and cheerful, the prices are quite reasonable. Oh, my goodness. This sweet restaurant is too cute! Originally I planned to visit a nearby eatery that I had tried prior, but it was closed for a "deep cleaning." (This far into the pandemic, it should be clear why!) Fortunately, Old Chickahominy was right down the road and open. We arrived around 1:30; they close at 2:30, but there were still several occupied tables. We were brought to the back room that borders the kitchen. We were the only table seated in that room, which made me feel safe. I ordered Melinda's Special and my mom ordered Becky's Luncheon. The difference between the two was that I also got Brunswick Stew. Both had ham biscuits, fruit salad, choice of pie, and choice of coffee or tea. Admittedly I was worried about my mom's reaction to ham biscuits (she's from the north and hadn't tried them previously). I gave her a heads up to expect salt. But I was stunned by her response to the dish -- she inhaled every bite! She had tea; I had coffee. We both also got lemonade, which was very good. For pies, she selected coconut custard and I had the buttermilk. We both loved our slices. The fruit salad was like nothing I had ever tried before. It looked like a seemingly bizarre combo, but somehow it was phenomenal. My Brunswick stew was hearty and filled with lots of veggies and beans. And of course the ham sandwiches were the stars! Their menu never changes, and they've been around for many decades. To the right when you walk in, there's a cute gift shop. The bathrooms can also be found through the gift shop. Our out-of-town visitors had heard of the Old Chickahominy House and we had not been there so we decided to make it our brunch spot for the day. Wow! We were pleasantly surprised with everything. The food was fabulous. I had bacon, scrambled eggs and biscuits. My husband and I shared a pancake with blueberry sauce. The bacon was cooked perfectly. I was surprised with the biscuits but they were quite tasty. (Now I wish I had tried the creamed ham over biscuits.) The sauce on the pancake was very impressive. I don't know for sure but I suspect the chef makes the blueberry sauce because it was amazing! Thanks for the wonderful service and great food! Went for Lunch Food - 5/5. Their sweet tea was on another level of sweetness. It kept the distinct tea taste despite the heavy sweet flavor and was very refreshing. The fruit salad was interesting. When I imagine a fruit salad, I think of a variety of cut up fruit but what we had here was canned fruit mixed with mayonnaise and topped with shredded cheese. It was my first time seeing such a combination and it wasn't bad. The Brunswick stew was very hearty, and I loved how thoroughly cooked all the vegetables were as it gave them a nice snap. The Virginia country ham was just the right balance of salty and savory and paired perfectly with the soft, buttery biscuit. I really liked the square shaped version of the biscuit as the thinness kept it from being overly doughy. The chocolate pie was phenomenal from the crust to the custard. Crust was buttery, flaky and just the right level of thickness. Custard was smooth, sweet and full of chocolate flavor. An amazing, unique dining experience. Service - 4/5. Very friendly and fast. Sweet tea was refilled consistently. Value - 5/5. It wasn't a lot of food total but the variety and unique experience of what appeared to be very local fare made it all worth it. The entire set was $15 and came with unlimited sweet tea. The setting of a cute, plantation style house really added to the atmosphere and made the dining experience that much better. We loved our breakfast visit at this restaurant. The staff were so friendly and the atmosphere is very colonial Williamsburg and cozy. The meals came quickly and staff was very attentive to drink refills, checking how everything was going, etc. Also, they have space to accommodate large groups. The food is decent but the location, the fact that the restaurant doubles as a cute shop, and the wait staff make this place a spot you should check out if you're in town. The service is so quick and they fill drink orders faster than you can blink because they are just walking around with trays of drinks ready to go on the table. I will say that getting a table is the tricky part because it's so popular and parking can be difficult. If you are going, call in the morning around 9-10 am and get on the list for 11:45 and then arrive a few minutes early. I wanted to have a great breakfast at Old Chickahominy House because I hadn't been in awhile, and I knew that they were seeking customers because this is a downtime in Williamsburg. I ordered two eggs with cheese and biscuits. The eggs were great but the biscuits were flat like hard tack. They were dry and room temperature. Needless to say, I did not finish them. 3.5 stars. If you want old-fashioned Virginia food and a quaint ambiance to match, this is your place! It was perfect for lunch while I was attending a historical conference at Colonial Williamsburg, although it is a few minutes drive away from the historic area, so you want to make sure you have time for a long lunch. It was full of the classy blue-haired set, likely donors or long-time Williamsburg museum patrons, and others from the conference. They obviously know where the place to go is! I had a mostly satisfying and affordable lunch. I had one of the specials, which included a salad (it was peach and pineapple, I suspect canned, on lettuce with a mayo-like sauce- very 1950s, which makes sense since that's when the restaurant opened). I didn't care for the salad. Then a cup of Brunswick Stew (great and filling) and a biscuit sandwich with a small helping of Virginia Ham (biscuit was the thin and long type; Ham was, as VA ham should be, extremely salty.) This lunch special also came with coffee or tea and a piece of pie. The pie was very good (I had chocolate) and was a nice addition but maybe a bit too much for lunch, although a great deal. They never brought my coffee and brought us the check without even asking, so I unfortunately didn't get to try their house blend. My friend really enjoyed her chicken and dumplings. You pay up front at the register. Also love that they have a resident cat, and a store full of interesting items. Parking can be difficult but we got a space around the back. Would likely return for lunch and probably stick with the Brunswick stew. read more
