We arrived at 4:30 in the afternoon. We sat at a table near the bar and were totally ignored for about 10 min. We moved to the bar and were ignored for another 10 minutes. Finally a guy working the bar handed us menus. We ordered shepherd's pie and a bison meatloaf sandwich. I wish I had snapped a pic of the sandwich. The meat must have been a child's portion. It was tiny. The shepherd's pie was tasty, but not the best I've ever had. It did have meat, but I had to work to find it. The bill was rather large all things considered. read more

Nope, no, not a good experience. I had their meatloaf which had gotten good reviews from other people here. I guess they were having an off night because I've had better meatloaf in a TV Dinner. Having a spur of the moment to experience and enjoy the last beautiful weekend of the national parks and Mount Rushmore, my boyfriend and I decided to get the full experience and spend the evening/night in rapid city and try the best restaurant that was recommended. I'm very upset and disappointed to say it was the WORST appetizer of fried pickles and entree of salmon and vegetables I've ever had. Why, you ask? There was absolutely no seasoning on our food. Tasted "out of the package" and heated up. I'm not one to ever complain but the reviews and expectations have very much let me down. Had dinner there tonight, was not impressed. I sat outside, after 5 min, walked back in to find a menu. After ordering, coffee was brought out, fresh with good flavor. I ordered the Rib-eye, medium rare. It didn't take long to bring out my meal. The rib-eye was barely cooked, looked like it had been slapped on the grill, flipped, and brought out. The honeymoon phase is over and I can now be brutally honest. Murphy's Pub & Grill I do love you, but you frustrate me to no end sometimes... and those times are more often than not at all. (This will be a highly conflicted and honest review.) The Staff are great people and are solid human beings. That being said there's always a lack of service in terms of timeliness to be approached, order taken and ultimately being served. Even in the off season from all our touristy things it can be await. A real and laboring wait. (I realize that a good crew will space things out for the kitchen so they can manage it all, but it can be a little out of hand sometimes.) That part is over and I can tell you that in the end if you have the time and the patience and want to experience a great scene that you should still put Murphy's on your list. Things that will help the experience along: - Sit at the bar if you're solo or a couple - enjoy the beer selection. - have one of their mixed drinks. - order a bite (and find comfort in the fact that the food will always be good and consistent. They're the most accommodating place I've found for food restrictions.) In the end, be patient and get to know the people working because ultimately it's what makes the experience here at Murphy's. I had to be objective with this one and it took s lot for me to be truthful with this review. As I said, the honeymoon phase is over, and I had to let people know. An hour and a half later..still no food. People are leaving, left and right because the service/food delivery is all messed up. The server says "it's their system, but when you bring food to a table that's been here less than half the time we have, you'd think to check on your other tables." Woah! I came here while passing through on a vacation. I happened to Yelp this and am pleasantly satisfied. I ordered the pickles to start off and the table loved them. I ordered the buffalo meatloaf and I was blown away worth the flavor and the extra added flavor with this sauce. Put that with the potatoes and onions and we have a winner. We came here late one evening on our vacation. We took the kids and saw other families with kids there. So it is a family friendly place. We sat in a cute little booth, and Victoria came by with menus for us. There were some burned-out lights, so it was a little dark but nothing too bad. We ordered sodas, then our meals and an appetizer. The waters and sodas came in mason jars with handles, which is fun and nostalgic for me. The sausage sampler appetizer was good, and everyone but my youngest didn't like it. My youngest got the Mac and cheese and didn't like that either. He said it was too stringy, but it also had some strong cheeses in it. I tasted it and thought it might be good for someone who wanted a more upscale Mac and cheese, but maybe it's not the best choice for kids. The fish and chips were probably our favorite order (2 of us got that). The shepherd's pie was good, but I think the fish and chips were better. Victoria took good care of us and we enjoyed our visit. We would go back again. read more

We used yelp to find this place on a work tour and it did not disappoint. I ordered the burger and it was on point. My fiancée ordered the wings which were on special due to the NFL playoffs. The wings were a bit too saucy for me but they were on special for the day ($0.50 per) I can't complain too much. Would love to see an IPA on draft that was local but no worries we found a couple staples to get us by. Will make it a point to visit next time we are in town. read more

Went during happy hour on a Sunday. Basically empty. We wanted to cool down, have a drink, and let our kids play cards, and our server was both attentive and accommodating. Good selection of local beers. Mixed drinks were just okay (margarita and speciality gin and tonic). Ordered happy hour food, kids Shepards pie and Mac and cheese, Chips with fondue and pulled pork, and the pulled sliders and fish sliders. Everyone loved the chips, everything was just meh. Nope, wouldn't stop in here again. We were greeted by a host who sat five of us at a square table for four when there were other tables open. Puzzling, as we've certainly had someone in our group pull up a chair to the end of a booth before but this was an awkward configuration. Service... our waitress was pleasant but very slow to take our order, bring our beer (and then it was the wrong size) and slow to refill our beverages while we waited eons for our dinner. Food... our food took forever to come out. And then it was cold. Perhaps this was related to the waitress's inattentiveness to her job. Either way, even if it had been warm, the flavor wasn't anything special. Went yesterday evening, arrived around 6:30pm. Place was busy. Food was totally fine (buffalo meatloaf), but service from my bartender (a dark-haired female) was mostly inattentive and argumentative. I could give a bit of a pass on the inattentive part, due to how many people were there, but the attitude was a full portion. The first issue was when she was shaking my stirred martini. When I brought that to her attention, she claimed I never told her that. Then, I ordered a salad in addition to the meatloaf. After a long wait, both arrived at the same time. When I explained that that was bad form, having both cold and hot arrive at the same time, she argued that I didn't ask for salad first. Both the customer next to me at the bar, and another bartender who overheard concurred that having salad come with entree was not correct. My review is strictly based on my experience with the host at Murphy's, I had nothing to eat or drink there... I walked in tonight with a relatively large party, 7, including 2 children and the host seated us right away. We were seated at a hi-top table even though there were several unoccupied regular tables in the back of the restaurant. Because my kids are small and the bar-height chairs weren't ideal, I asked the host if we could move to a regular table, my request was refused because according to the host, they were serving a party of 20 in the back and he didn't want to "overwhelm his server." Not sure why he couldn't just have a different server cover our table... I chose to leave and try Thirsty's next door, they were very accommodating. We first visited Murphy's on a whirlwind trip to Rapid City in the fall of 2017. We'd spent an incredible day playing tourist and after checking off all the usuals - Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Needles Highway - we'd worked up quite an appetite. Heard good things about this place and decided to check it out. I immediately fell in love with the ambience. The large space is cozy and inviting thanks to lots of natural wood, exposed beams, and dim-but-not-too-dim lighting. Even though it was the offseason (October) there was a 20-minute wait, but we were there on a Saturday evening so that's hardly surprising. We just grabbed a couple of drinks from the bar and kicked back by the fireplace while waiting for our table. Once we got it, service was friendly and attentive. We're big fried pickle fans, and Murphy's serves up a unique version, wrapped in prosciutto and stuffed with mozzarella. They border on overkill but, gotta admit, are pretty tasty. Four spears is a pretty good-sized appetizer for two. I'd seen their buffalo meatloaf featured on the Travel Channel and knew I had to have that. It didn't disappoint; it was wrapped in bacon and came with portobello mushrooms, fried onion straws and asparagus, served atop mashed potatoes. Let's not forget the coup de grace - bourbon ketchup! If you don't have a little bit of drool inching its way down your chin right now you aren't human - go back to the mothership! Incidentally, if you've got a damn-the-carbs mentality, there's a sandwich version too, and it's every bit as good. It's served open-faced, so forget about picking that sucker up. My wife ordered the Dakota pulled pork sandwich and enjoyed it, but the watermelon-jalapeno BBQ sauce packed a kick, so if you're spice-averse, keep that in mind. The full bar has pretty much everything you might want, and I was relieved to find they make a pretty good Bloody Mary. That night will always stick out in my mind, because over the course of that fantastic dinner, we made a monumental decision to pack up our life as we knew it and move to Rapid City. Some nine months later, we were home in the Black Hills. And Murphy's is a fave go-to spot. I haven't strayed far from the buffalo meatloaf, but a special three-course meal during Rapid City Restaurant Week featured all kinds of delicious grub not normally on the menu - dishes like pork shank Osso Bucco with braised root vegetables, maple-glazed braised beef short ribs with smoked gouda grits, and stellar desserts (capuccino cheesecake! pumpkin creme brulee!). I would love to see everything we had that night make it to the regular menu, because it seems the chef can do no wrong here. read more
