Having recently moved to Manhattan, I was in need of a primary care physician and dentist/hygienist to avoid extra trips out to LI for checkups and well visits. After checking out some local offices for my next teeth cleaning, I came across Murray Hill Dental, headed by Dr. Katayev. I called prior to discuss procedures and pricing and subsequently made an appointment, as I was very pleased with his detailed responses and patience over the phone. Walking in, they say you can only make one first impression, and this one was certainly a good one. The receptionist and waiting area were both immaculate and staff were exceptional in setting me up with new patient forms and other requisite information. They have a mini-fridge with bottled waters and juices, a TV, and plenty of literature to keep you busy, although less than a minute after I filled out my forms, I was whisked into the exam room. Once seated, I met the Dr. took a set of X-rays, and he gave me a "tooth-by-tooth" synopsis, detailing areas of concern, and asking me questions along the way to gain a better understanding of my lifestyle and relevant history. As a fellow gadget/tech nerd, it was cool to see the X-rays displayed up on the screen in real-time, and it was evident Dr. Katayev was fluent with all the office/tech gadgets, adjusting contrast, and zooming in as needed. The teeth cleaning was preceded by a numbing agent he smeared along my gums before breaking out the entourage of tools (scalers, Prophy Jet & polishing brush). Usually the most agonizing part of my dental visits, this experience was quite pleasant - he was cognizant of sensitive areas but I still left feeling thoroughly clean. Overall, I have to commend Dr. Katayev not only on his professionalism and patience, but on his obvious ambition to keep up-to-date on the latest and most effective products and technologies. In numerous contexts, he referenced different equipment he's tried, only to be replaced by something newer and more effective, or simply because it didn't live up to his high expectations. Having opened up shop here only a few months ago, you can see the space was gut-renovated and outfitted with brand new equipment, furniture, cabinetry, moldings, lighting, and paint. I definitely plan to return for another regularly-scheduled "well visit" and highly recommend Dr. Katayev / Murray Hill Dental to anyone seeking exceptional care in the area. read more

I came into the office last month after an accident and let me tell you... I texted their phone that I needed an emergency appointment and I had an appointment the following day. Murray Hill dental will work with you if you do or don't have insurance. My initial visit I paid biweekly until my insurance kicked in. I came in with a fractured tooth and and left with a smile better then the one I had before my accident. My entire family goes to Murray hill dental and they schedule our appointments around each other. Hands down best dental office in town. I relied on great reviews in selecting this dentist, utter disappointment. If you have what this office deems as the right insurance, you are probably fine, but definitely do not rely on this group's website, or even to an extent verbal confirmation from staff on insurance if you are purchasing a new plan. Based on my experience, I would not trust an office to do dental work, if simple things as mere office organization and communication, as well as professionalism are lacking. I have filed complaints with the state dental board and Better Business Bureau based on my interactions recently experienced. I am not sure what this office is up to, but forcing certain insurance plans, perhaps for kickbacks, or hoping a customer caves and pays out of pocket for all expenses is wrong in my book. There would be not much of an issue here had I not been expressly told the plan I was purchasing was not accepted, but that was not the case. I should take this as a blessing in disguise that before I paid any real amount of money to this dentist, that this was discovered early & not later. If their advertising and offices practices are shady and untruthful, who knows if what the dentist was diagnosing my issue as being were in fact honest as well! read more

I have to advise strongly against going to Murray Hill Dental. I had been a patient of Illustradent, which was sold to Murray Hill Dental. I then was a patient there for about a year or so. I went for maybe 3 or 4 cleanings (to be fair, they were organized and the cleanings were done well). Then then the last time I went, I had x-rays done... The dentist proceeds to tell me that I need 10 fillings and 2 crowns (!!!!!). What?!?!? Where did that come from out of nowhere? Keep in mind that I had seen the dentist at every one of the cleanings I had as well. I was flabbergasted. Of course, I went for a second opinion right away, which confirmed that this diagnosis was absolutely not necessary. I found another dental practice that I will go to permanently. They also reviewed the same x-rays and photos taken by Murray Hill Dental and did an exam and confirmed again that not only was none of 10 fillings or 2 crowns necessary, but that I don't even need to get an x-ray for another year and a half. It is painfully clear that this practice cares only about making money and cannot be trusted. read more

Murray Hill Dental Merged with my old Dental Practice (Illustradent - Dr Alex Pilavsky) Murray Hill Dental encouraged me to keep my existing Dental insurance and told me they would continue to accept it since I was a former Illustradent patient. After I paid the premium, Murray Hill Dental suddenly no longer lived up to their obligation, and stopped accepting the insurance. I found a new Dentist and have been asking for 2 months for my Murray Hill Dental to release and forward my charts to either me, or my new Dentist. They sent over one X-Ray, but the paper charts have not been scanned or released. I had multiple extractions and 4 implants done by these people and they can't find/scan/release the records... (ie: spent way over $10,000) Be very wary of this practice read more

Very aggressive upselling of borderline unnecessary procedures plus billing fraud. They apparently booked a procedure that I didn't ask for. When I asked them why they did this, they just said "You need it." When I asked them why they thought I needed it, their response was "The dentist recommended it so you need it." So I said no. Then their sales person continued arguing with me for 10 minutes. No explanation of why they thought I needed the procedure or what it involved. And the billing. My insurance company stated that they are in-network, and the office's receptionist told me the same thing. When they filed the insurance claim, it was as an out-of-network organization so they could get more money. Seems like fraud to me. Although they hate explaining anything related to dental work, they did do that once. Then they charged me for it. A charge for explaining things? Fraud. read more

I came to the office for wisdom tooth extraction consultation with a doctor. Before I could see the doctor, I was forced to do a full set of X-rays and Cleaning. When doctor came took one look at my teeth and said he is not experienced with oral surgery and referred me to another doctor. Why was I forced to do the full set of x-rays and cleaning? So that maxed out my insurance right away and I was not informed about that. The girl who did my cleaning was very rough and very same day, my filling came off after the cleaning. When I came for the filling, I was again not informed that my insurance was maxed out. After getting a filling, i was left with over 500$ out of pocket expense. The office does not want to go and meet me half way, even though I feel it was there fault for not informing me. The worth part is that I had a new insurance that was starting just in 15 days and would cover all this work for me. So before you go see them, make sure you ask them for the out of pocket expenses. They are out of network with MetLife and can charge whatever price they want for their services. read more

Got an appointment? Don't count on it. I booked an appointment with Dr. Katayev nearly a month ago. I scheduled my week around it. Then, 24 hours before my appointment, the office called and informed me that the doctor has decided he won't accept new patients under my insurance plan. I had an appointment with Murray Hill Dental for a cleaning, X-Rays, and an examination. In California I pay around $300 for this. They quoted me $1,085 for this to be done. I walked out because I can pay a round trip flight to California, hotels, and the services I need for less. Regardless, new customers please be weary of the price if you are without insurance. read more

I called Murray hill dental regarding a procedure and was told it would be covered by my insurance not once but twice by the front desk representative, on the day of my appointment during the procedure when one of my tooth was already being done that's when I was told by the dentist that I had to pay $400 out of pocket, I payed them $180 over two months, with all the craziness going on they have the nerves to be calling me threatening me about sending me to collection, when they are the one that entrap me with this debt....the representative was very rude, and cold, overall disgusting if you ask me they are very unprofessional and inconsiderate. read more

I went to Murray Hill Dental to have my teeth cleaned for the first time this week. Reception was incredibly friendly and welcoming. I was promptly lead to a dental hygienist. They took extensive pictures of my teeth and their dental technology seemed very advanced. My hygienist kindly advised why I should floss more, in a belittling manner. I had an amazing experience here today. Prior to today's appointment, I had not been to the dentist in over three years (yes, it's shameful but I was traumatized by a horrible dental hygienist a few years ago and haven't gotten my teeth cleaned since). Anyway, today's appointment made me realize that talented hygienists don't cause pain. So kudos to my hygienist, Hanna! He was super gentle - and did a fantastic job cleaning my teeth. I went for a cleaning early last year after seeing a flier and thinking the office looked cute so why not? I will never go back. I had an issue with this office that was very serious - like, fraud-level serious. First, though, the front desk staff were friendly at check in. That's going to be about the only good thing I have to say about this office. The initial cleaning by the hygienist was very rough and my gums were bleeding profusely. I don't have sensitive gums and normally - whether during a cleaning or otherwise - my gums never bleed. This was very unusual. The hygienist then did NOT take X-Rays, as I usually experience, but instead took "special" photographs (which I later found out garnered extra charges) and the dentist came in and informed me that the pictures showed that I had two cavities. I was shocked because I am lucky in that I have pretty problem-free teeth. I have always love going to the dentist because I get complimented and sent on my way with shiny pearly whites and no issues. I have never had a cavity, brush and floss like a pro and rarely consume sugar. I expressed skepticism and asked if the dentist was sure. He acted extremely offended and said of course he was sure and that I needed to get two fillings right away. He also said my teeth were crooked (they're not) and that I needed orthodontic work (I don't). I told him that was pretty strange that no other dentist told me that and he got offended again and said it was his job to tell me what was best for my teeth and that he could do the fillings that very day for me. I declined. On check-out, I was taken to a separate room - not the front desk - where a woman aggressively urged me to schedule the two fillings for the two alleged cavities. I finally said I'd have to call her later to schedule and literally RAN away. I then got busy and forgot about the office and, since my teeth felt fine, didn't worry about the supposed cavities. I got numerous emails from the office, asking about scheduling fillings for these supposed cavities, which I ignored. Here's the kicker: my 6-month dental check-up time rolled around and I went to a different dentist and she took x-rays and I remembered that Murray Hill Dental had told me I had two cavities so I asked her if I did. She was absolutely floored. She told me I have no cavities and she's never seen healthier teeth. No cavities. Let that sink in. Murray Hill Dental told me that I had TWO cavities and aggressively urged me to get them filled there asap. Unless cavities heal themselves (they don't), over 6 months later, my teeth are 100% cavity-free. This seems like fraud - to tell a patient they need not just one, but two, procedures they don't need. I still have their emails about cavities and fillings. I then asked the new dentist what she thought about orthodontic work on me, as Murray Hill Dental had urged. She was like, "What's wrong with you? Why are you asking that? That's so unnecessary! He made sure I was ok and made me feel completely in good hands, looking forward to keep doing business with them. Also, the reception team is amazing and answers EVERY question that comes up. This man gave me a root canal, left the gauze in the hole for more than a year and proceeded to do other work. My insurance company found that he was up-charging for his procedures, which I thankfully did not pay, and he was rude when I confronted him. If you value your teeth, go elsewhere. Murray Hill foisted an unnecessary laser "gum cleaning" procedure on me that I neither requested nor wanted, simply bc they took it upon themselves to obtain insurance preapproval. I was told the procedure was perfectly safe and killed bacteria on the gum. Not so. It was painful and periodontic in nature and performed by an inexperienced hygienist. She lasered off too much gum tissue, as a result of which my bottom front teeth are now considerably out of alignment with one of the teeth falling backward and the adjacent teeth crowding on it. I had formerly straight teeth and am now undergoing orthodontic treatment to correct their error. read more

Just visited Dr. Katayev for the first time and I left extremely impressed. I have struggled to find a good dentist for a while and I think i hit the jackpot with this one. Extremely professional, actually LISTENS to concerns without making you feel a bit rushed, addresses them with full knowledge, and ensures your full understanding of the situation. I got the BEST cleaning I have had so far. The office/ work area is clean and their tools are up to date. The staff gets 5 stars for their wonderful service as well. I found Dr. Michael Katayev through ZocDoc and chose him because of his available time. I must say, I could not have been happier with my experience. Upon walking in, the office itself is beautiful, clean and very well lit. It wasn't intensely, brightly lit but soft to the eyes. I checked in and sat for about 8 minutes in there spacious waiting room. After coming into the back, I sat right down and immediate was prepared for X-Rays as I was a new patient. I must add in that in each room there are tv's with running cable; it was a nice touch. After the XRays taken by the Tech, Dr. Kateyev walked in and explained exactly what I was looking at on the TV turned computer monitor by the simple press of a "source" button. Once he answered my questions on the XRays we went right into the original check of my teeth. As he navigated my teeth he narrated what he was seeing and provided me with what to expect in the upcoming cleaning. He started cleaning and prepared me for any areas that may sensitive. As he was cleaning his Tech was right him making sure my mouth stayed dry so he would work. Once he was done, he provided a "blast" polish which took off some of my coffee stains. It was the first time, I have had this and he explained it like a "mini hurricane in your mouth"; he couldn't of been more right. After he polished my teeth we were done and he provided me some recommendations for better maintenance. I left the office with a 6 month check up and truly pleased with my experience. I think in total my entire visit was under 45 minutes. He and his office staff provided me such a great experience that I volunteered to write my first Yelp review for his practice.
