Have you always wanted to learn parkour, but are afraid to practice outdoors on the hard concrete? You are in luck! The newest branch of the world-famous APEX Movement (and only one thus far outside of their home state of Colorado) has now opened its doors in Concord. Founded in 2006 by the renowned Ryan Ford, one of the preeminent parkour practitioners/coaches in the US, APEX has been helping promote the activity in a safe and responsible manner across the United States and beyond. Unlike the plethora of fly by night indoor facilities sprouting up around the Bay with the sole intent of capitalizing on what's hot to make a quick buck, the guys at APEX actually have the acumen and experience to back everything up. Plus, it is clearly obvious that they have a heartfelt passion for what they are doing. I recently attended a weekend-long parkour coaching certification course, and had the opportunity to test out the majority of the equipment, from the walls and ledges, jungle gym bars, vaulting boxes, to even a re-creation of the famous "warped wall" from Ninja Warrior, and best of all... a foam pit! Obviously, any indoor facility will not be able to emulate the majority of obstacles one might run into on city streets, but with enough practice here, the transition to the concrete jungle should be seamless and pain-free. Before long, it will be you guys who are the young, up and coming whippersnappers in the parkour community showing us old farts how it's done! Make sure to check out the amazing YouTube tutorials from the guys who run APEX, Ryan and Amos: Demon Drills - http://www.youtube.com/DemonDrills Parkour Ukemi - http://www.youtube.com/FreerunParkourUkemi Also, check out my YouTube channel as well! http://www.youtube.com/freeterstar

It doesn't even matter how old you are, because this is where you come to play! After completing several beginner courses in Ninja Warrior and Parkour, I try to come back to many of the special events hosted by Sqvadron, the resident pro-team, even if I can't come to the regular classes at the moment. I can't say enough good things about being a part of this community! Some cool events I attended recently were, 'Gathering of the Amazons (all-women jam day)', 'Parkour Reps' w/Darryl Stingley, and 'Storm x Sqvadron Jam'. On the day of attending the 'Gathering of the Amazons' event at Apex Norcal, Mel Riveria from Sqvdron and Lynn Jung from Storm, lead a women-only jam session outside at UC Berkeley campus. I don't know the last time I had so much fun at a school campus before! After the outdoor jam session, being back to the gym was a perfect complement to the day. It was a well-thought-out learning day of bringing parkour outside and learning the different types of environments for various lines for newbies like me. Having a day dedicated to jamming, watching, and learning from other women who are super talented was so empowering. It helped alleviate some anxiety about trying out the sport mainly taken over by boys/men and not feel so intimidated during jam sessions or open gym. With that said, I can appreciate anyone who can jump off buildings no matter what gender you are. It takes lots of courage and skill to do that and I can binge-watch that on Instagram. So props to all Ninja Warriors and Parkour athletes everywhere. And even though I wouldn't ever see myself jumping off a building, one can feel comfortable by practicing inside a gym like Apex Norcal if they ever need to use that skill! To all the staff and coaches that I know, you are the best!

Our kids joined APEX in February after trying it out on a Groupon and doing a winter camp. They had a blast and love watching Ninja Warrior so how cool is it that the owner/coach was on the show? Awesome! Here's a tidbit if you're an ANW fan, some on the top athletes like Jessie Graff often visit to train once in awhile and my kids and I both got to meet her. Your best deal is pre paying for 1 year for a discount . Staff is so friendly and knowledgeable and helpful. My kids do class once a week and open gym once a week and love it. My daughter just celebrated her 10th Birthday here and Alan was amazing! The kids had a blast & learned how to conquer the warped wall, jump in the foam pit, and try all the obstacles in the gym. If you're looking for a great place to train where the kids (and adults) will have fun while learning some great skills, this is your place. For a kids party, this is a great choice too. Hands down my daughter thought this was the best birthday ever & she and I couldn't be any happier. Highly recommend Apex. Facility is top notch which is why Jessie comes to visit and gets some training in here too. She told me that when I met her. They usually have Groupons so there's no excuse to not give this place a try. You won't regret it!

For blocks, can they do the 1 hour open gym on a different day than their class day?

Each youth session is the full two hours, so it would be on the same day.

Are they open tomorrow for MLK?

Hi Jen, We will be open for regular hours on MLK

Just scan your barcode and keep moving. I came in today because I had got a healthcare and law-enforcement perk to join active and fit which we all know is an amazing discounted rate to join a gym so why not take advantage of something your company offers you to get healthy and have mental stress relief, just to be told your membership was not valid and the person who's trying to help you basically pawn it off on the person next to him and dismisses you the next person who comes in, So finally asked for a manger seems to feel like this was taking to much of there time, Thankfully the manager Carlos is my savior His last name is a little hard to pronounce, but went above. I mean, ladies and gentlemen above and beyond to help figure out why our membership was not being active which I guess as his job but the empathy of my frustration and the hoops jumping to resolve this he watching me igoing back back-and-forth with the front desk, who stated they couldn't help was telling me to take screenshots of what was popping up on the computer for him on their side, but also shown somebody else's behind the screenshot of somebody else's membership and all their personal information I found was very concerning not that I would care to call whomever was behind the digital screen, but I don't know in healthcare we're very private. We don't want anybody to see our information, but I greatly appreciate the management trying to help out after seeing the frustration in the many phone calls trying to figure out why on a Monday when you are fully dressed and ready to enter the gym and you're happy you know you're motivated just for somebody to kill your vibe in your first five seconds of walking in the door. I think they should teach a little bit more of customer service Or some fake it to you make!!! Maybe it was just me maybe the guy has RBF and is having a bad day but I don't know but hopefully tomorrow will be a better day. Please see Carlos the manager for anything, bypass the front desk so your workout will be amazing

Unfortunately, my recent experience with the manager makes it hard to recommend right now. I was billed twice for my membership due to what appeared to be a billing error on the gym's end. An associate worked with me to resolve it, and as far as I knew, the issue was fixed. About a week later, however, the same double-billing issue happened again. When I brought it up with the same associate, he advised me to speak with the manager directly. A few days later, I sat down with the manager and explained the full situation: I had been charged twice, an associate had already tried (unsuccessfully) to resolve it, and I was now dealing with the same problem again. Throughout the conversation, the manager came across as visibly disinterested and annoyed. When I jokingly suggested we could call it even if I just grabbed a protein shake from their fridge, he responded with, "I don't see why you think you're entitled to one. It's not my problem." When I explained that I felt entitled to a refund -- both because the double billing was their error and because the issue persisted even after I'd already sought help from an associate -- he flatly refused. He then told me he intended to write up the associate who had tried to help me, which frankly felt like retaliation for the associate simply doing his job. Afterward, I mentioned what happened to another staff member, who wasn't surprised at all and openly referred to this manager as the "worst manager" they'd worked under. This gym has real potential, but as long as this manager is in charge of handling member issues, I don't see it living up to it. I the meantime, I recommend UFC Gym, 24 Hr Fitness or even Planet Fitness. I sincerely hope upper management takes note and makes a change.
