Well, I reviewed Rick and his crew a year ago when he moved my belongings 6 blocks to a temporary rental home. This year I had him move me back. Only difference for me was that this move was without the dining room furniture, 3-piece entertainment center, and furniture/contents of a bedroom. Last time (2012) it took them about 4 hours costing me $650. This time it took them 5 hours and cost me $900. They are careful and very attentive, however I think that the price was a little steep considering that I now have about 25% LESS furniture. Good movers, but getting expensive. read more

This company moved us again, and unfortunately, they weren't as good as the first time. The day we moved was MISERABLE. Cold, rainy, totally the worst day to move. The guys seemed a bit grouchy and impatient, which i found irritating, (especially since i also had the flu that day.) They almost forgot a lot of items, and only remembered them after we specifically pointed them out. There were still a few things they said they would go back in for, which they never did. Another particular annoyance was the bottles they left all over our house. It seemed there was a water or juice bottle left on every open counter. Not very professional. I was annoyed we had to go through and dispose of all of them. They also took a energy bar off the counter and ate it without asking. I noticed because they left he wrapper in the counter as well. This may sound petty, but it was the principle of it. I would have been more than happy to give them the bar if they had asked. When they were bringing in the beds/box springs/and slats i told then they were putting the wrong ones in the the guest room, (we have two queen bed sets, one for the guest room, one for the master.) They assured me they weren't, and later that night my husband discovered they were in fact in the wrong rooms, and he had to move them all himself. A HUGE inconvenience! This move took much longer than the last one, although we actually had less items this time. (We moved the majority of the boxes ourselves.) I don't know if this was on purpose, but it was starting to get to me by the end of the day. They also broke an item, but admitted it was their fault and took some money off the total cost. Between my now-husband and me, we have used My Dad's Moving four times over the past six years. Most recently, we used Rick and his guys to move our twosome-selves from a 2,000 square foot home to a 2,200 square foot home. He had quoted us $200/hour for four men and two trucks. We both figured, based upon our past experience, that it would take the entire day. (It is amazing and dismaying how quickly we can accumulate stuff!) I have no complaints about Rick. He has always been the consummate professional and keeps everyone moving. He usually arrives a bit earlier than scheduled, which is a plus in my book. I usually feed them a quick McDonald's breakfast which they grab and eat while they begin their work. The crew quickly cart out box-ladened dollies while Rick busies himself with arranging all the items just-so in the truck to maximize packing space and to avoid the slimmest of possibilities of having to make a couple of trips. Watching him pack the truck is like watching a challenging game of Tetris. These guys are polite, quick, and cool--all the while sweating and grunting, carrying inordinate poundage, disassembling beds, packing my hanging clothes into their provided wardrobe boxes. It took about half the day to load the truck. Then while they journeyed to our new home, I ran to Subway to make sure I could give these guys whatever energy they needed to unload. Maybe it is the Chinese in me, but I like to see people eat; it builds their stamina. After a quick break to eat and hydrate, the four went at it again. By the time late afternoon came around, I was dragging even though my only responsibility was to simply point my finger to the rooms that the belongings should be carried to. Rick and his men never dragged their heels and were always at attention and always pleasant. Rick may not provide official quotes by the way of a form prior to the move which seems to ruffle the feathers of some other of the Yelp reviewers, but he is definitely a man of his word and provides an invoice after the job is done. I had a very small job, but it was too big for me and my wife. Move one heavy piece of furniture upstairs. I was afraid it was too small of a job for a mover, but My Dad's Moving agreed to do it. They showed up on time, and did it for the agreed upon price, which was lower than others who bid. They respected my home and were very attentive to the job. They even offered to do work beyond what I originally asked for, because the job was so small. Found these guys on YELP... the best moving company we have ever used!!! Rick was extremely easy to talk to and very accomodating. All 4 guys came right on time and got right to work! They made moving so easy, and came with a great attitude! They were extremely careful with our stuff and we did not have to babysit them, like we did our other movers in the past! I hate moving, but if you have to do it, I highly recommend them! They are a bit pricey but oh-so-worth it... we went with a cheaper moving co. in the past, and ended up with a lot of headache PLUS spent more time and money after trying to fix their screw-up. We recently found My Dad's Moving through the recommendation of our realtors. We've moved several times in the bay area and have tried several moving companies. We had a mixture of experiences with them, so we decided to give My Dad's Moving a try after our realtor recommend them. Making the Appointment: We recently closed on a new construction property that was a month delayed. We found out on the weekend that we were going to close on the house on Tuesday. Since we were in temporary living, we wanted to move ASAP. I called the company and Rick was able to give me a quick quote and accommodated my short noticed swiftly! The Move: Rick and his team arrived to our storage unit promptly at 7AM (as we had arranged) and began working immediately. We had everything packed in a storage unit. The 3 men worked quickly and loaded our full 10'x18' storage unit in less than an hour! They did a great job moving in to our new townhouse too. As every homeowner may relate, moving causes some anxiety as we're scared the movers will scratch our walls or damage our pieces. The men worked so diligently and carefully. They really took care of every piece of our furniture. Whenever they could manage the lift, they would always carry the boxes up the stairs rather using the dolly. My boxes were super heavy, but they really went the extra mile to make sure our move was as smooth as possible. The team was super friendly and approachable. Every time I asked for a piece of furniture or box to be moved to another location, I never sensed a sign of distress. I don't plan to move again anytime soon, but I'll definitely be recommending Rick and his team to anyone that needs moving services! read more

I have nothing but good things to say about Rick and his crew. Moving is pretty simple on the cosumer end....do it without breaking stuff and have respect for my family and my stuff. Rick and his team did all of that for us. They move very quickly but efficiently. When you use them, be ready to get the stuff moved.....they mean business (in a good way) The price seemed fair, but when you are moving your family and all of your stuff, a couple extra bucks is worth it also if you think you can find someone cheaper. Interestingly, I can tell that Rick runs a straight operation and probably does a good job, but as others noted here there's not much to discuss with him. He quoted me $150/hr for a 3-man crew, and when I told him that was higher than other estimates I was getting so far, he immediately told me to "have a nice day". I totally get that it's prime moving season so he probably doesn't need to plug his services much. But yeah, it's nice to at least maybe hear why I should pay a bit more. My 74 year old mother used this guy last year and was ok with what they had done. Charged her for 8 hrs at 75.oo an hr. It was a big job, down stairs, moved her across town and into a second floor apt. So when she was moving again a year later RIGHT ACROSS THE SIDWALK to a downstairs apt she figured she would give Rick her bussiness agaitom line is n. He quoted her over the phone 80.00 per hr with a 2 hr min. Funny how after reading all the other complaints this guy has no rhyme or reason on how much he charges or his min. hrs. So the guy shows up at 7am, and is done by 8:15 am. It was a crazy moving day and he tells her its 300.00 and Ill bring the invoice by later. CLEARLY 80.00 with a 2 hr min is not 300.00. When I asked him again for the invoice he got very defensive telling me he was busy and he will bring it by and tack it on the door later, he actually said "real life happens HUN and I was busy yesterday", ill be by today! and hung up. So the bottom line is Rick, basically ripped my 74 year old mother for 300.00 for a move that DON'T USE EVER AGAIN! read more

Should be more like 4.5 stars. We were searching for movers on one-day's notice, and My Dad's Moving was able to accommodate us. Given how obviously desperate we were in asking for a move the next day, I was happy that they didn't try to jack up the rates (we were quoted and charged reasonable rates in the neighborhood of what we paid on our last 3 moves). Rick was very professional and friendly, both on the phone and in person. We had a crew of 2 people, and they worked diligently the entire time they were here. We had packed about 80% of our things, but they were very good at gathering up the "miscellaneous" items and getting them moved. Also, I have never seen movers who are more careful around doorways and hallways, which is usually where all of the damage happens. They also called me the morning of the move to let me know they were on their way, which I appreciated. Very hard workers, very efficient, and very effective. And nice. I had contracted movers that cancelled on me (day of move) yesterday. I was calling around like crazy trying to find someone. My Dad's Moving answered their phone on a Sunday (no recorded message) and Rick was so nice. He went out of his way to try to help us out. The only day that he was able to move us didn't end up working for us and we finally found another company (who will hopefully be good). Even though we aren't using them for our move, it was awesome to know that they were willing to go out of their way to help us when we needed it. Sometimes you can just tell the integrity of a business by the integrity of the people who work there. First off let me say that Rick and his crew are professional, timely, and careful. They have a laid back style - they work hard, but in a non stressed out way. I would rate the quality of the actual "moving" as 4 to 4.5 stars. The reason for the ding is on the business end. I negotiated with Rick, very clearly, for 4 movers and a truck. There is a 4 hour minimum (standard) and I agreed to a per hour charge for any overage. However, when it came time to pay, the per hour rate he tried to charge was higher (by 10%) and there were trip charges and other padding not previously discussed - these should have been disclosed when we set up the appt. All tolled he tried to charge me about 20% more than the negotiated price. We haggled it down to about 10% over what I thought it should be and still gave his crew a nice tip and some extra for lunch - cuz like I said their work was very good. On the plus side they have a professional moving truck (multiple loading access points) which makes things move faster and he was well prepared with furniture pads, dollies, and straps. I would recommend My Dad's Moving, just get a written itemized estimate up front and you should have a great moving experience! read more

I've had Rick of My Dads Moving move me 3 times ( scheduled him for 4) over the last 13 years. The first few moves he and crew were the best. The last two times were beyond nightmares. The first of two failed attempts, we had scheduled weeks in advance only to have Rick never show up!!!!! Literally just not show up. Not call - nothing. When I finally reached him he said he forgot to put in his book and followed with a lame excuse along the lines of "people make mistakes"? Seriously? Ok, so people make mistakes. Ok, Fine. A few years later I sold my home and decided to give Rick another try. I mean he was great the first two times, right? What are the odds? Huge Mistake. I was promised 3 guys, including Rick, and I was told they'd have extra boxes and packing supplies. I am a single mom and asked for 3 guys because I needed to finish packing as they loaded the truck. I also planned on them showing up with supplies. I was told they would arrive around 8 am, I think it was. They were late so I called. two young men were on their way and complained that Rick left them no work order instruction so they weren't prepared with any supplies and that they'd be late. In the end, the move took probably 35% - 40% more time then it should have, and they charged me full price and more for every minute. BUT here's the clincher! I asked Rick to call me over and over to talk to him about the charges and how unprofessional the experience was. The guys trying to love me, while being left unprepared tried. 13 years ago Rick would have cared. I was told "he has other things going on and has these issues nowadays" and he doesn't seem to give a #%?*. You took advantage of a single mom Rick. A customer that relied on you, more than once and you couldn't care less. I am 52 years old and had to work 8-9 hours, physically moving with your boys because you didn't show up again! And you had the Gaul to not return my call and then to charge me full price? You suck dude! You suck and you're heartless. In the end I stopped payment to get him to call me back and the first thing he has to say is that he is filing a claim against me? Nice work Rick. Time to pack it up. You're a horrible human being for what you put me through. read more

These guys are da bomb! I used them again to move a truck of large paintings (heavy: on metal sheets and some are linoleum on board), misc. boxes of stuff I accumulate from our own house and adjunct relatives, and a cool, old-fashioned refurbished stove I am saving for that "one day" final house we settle and grow old-er in. They were right on time meeting me at storage facility jack-up-their-prices-each-year #1, to move to storage mom and pop facility #2. Very friendly, amiable, efficient, professional, careful and but worked quickly. Reasonably priced and packed my items very thoughtfully in the new storage unit. Based on the good Yelp recommendations, I called My Dad's Moving. The owner, Rick, is very friendly, helpful and answered his phone each of the three times I called. I checked other companies, but felt good about the decision to book My Dad's Moving. After booking for 9 am, Rick asked the next week if we could move the time up or back since he had another job and his movers usually get started earlier in the mornings. Since I'd booked my job first, I wasn't thrilled about the time change - but it wasn't a huge deal. I was VERY happy with their performance on move day. Although Rick wasn't on the team for our move, we had three very hard working and friendly movers. They arrived early, were very energetic and seemed to actually be having fun moving our mountains of stuff. They handled our items with care and were very polite and easy to work with. The rate was $150 per hour for the move and I negotiated $125 per hour for the drive time, since we were moving from Santa Cruz. Although I should have guessed it, Rick didn't mention beforehand that you're charged from when they leave the facility, rather than when they arrive at your house. This was the first time I've hired movers, but I would have no hesitation using or recommending My Dad's Moving. Told him my previous move had been less than half that and I was still in the same size apartment. He told me "times have changed." I have used My Dad's Movers on three previous occasions. I have always been completely satisfied with their employees, their rates, their professionalism. The movers were great and did s fast and fabulous job, however, I was told over b the phone that the cost was $167 (roughly) an hour, but it turned out there was a 3 hour minimum that I was NEVER made aware of. Other than that they were great. They took one hour to move my stuff since I only moved within the same complex, and it ended up costing me $500+ dollars due to the undisclosed 3 hour minimum rule that was NEVER disclosed to me when I made the appointment over the phone. Rick and his crew were right on time and got to work right away. We were moving some items from storage to another location, and removing items from the storage and the second location to be hauled away for recycling/dump as appropriate. Rick and his team were super courteous, and chit-chatted with me while they worked (didn't slow them down at all!!!) They worked quickly and carefully. I must say, for the size of the job, I was shocked when I got the bill. It was more than I anticipated. A lot more. I was in a quick hurry to get the move done to avoid paying yet another month to collect dust on junk. We could have done better figuring out how long the job might take. I thought it'd be pretty quick since there wasn't much stuff, but I didn't realize that the clock started from MDM's office, not the time they arrived to begin the job. On the breakdown, I can see how we arrived at the final number (mostly), but I still feel the final amount was a little padded. Since the service was pretty good I am not complaining, really. It makes sense, I just didn't realize it. My advice to anyone looking to hire Rick and MDM...Get an estimate in advance, in writing...that way you can avoid sticker shock (or at least have time to come to terms with it!) read more

Wow!!! I wish I could give more than 5 stars. It was easy to schedule with Rick using Yelp to connect with him. We had a 2 bedroom townhouse and moved to a 3rd floor, no elevator building. Fair quote of hourly rate and we were given a max price that they would not exceed. They were promptly at my apartment just before 7am. A quick run thru of the space and the men were off to work. By 8:30, everything was loaded and ready to go. By 10:15, we were finalizing paperwork and everything was done. We wondered how efficient they would be since the rate is hourly and we were beyond impressed. Adam, Devin, Nikko and Eric were helpful, friendly and professional. My 3 piece bed frame was disassembled and reassembled without issue, even checking what the perfect spot for the bed was in the new apartment. These guys were freakin amazing! I called em with two days notice, and he was more than happy to oblige my move from San Jose up to Menlo Park. They arrived exactly on time, and went straight to work. Rick was professional, friendly, and seems like a great guy. I feel horrible for not remembering his sidekick's name, but he was fantastic too. They got to my place at 7, starting organizing and repacking as needed, and had me completely moved out in about 2 hours. (Granted most of my stuff was packed [horribly] by my first movers.) Rick and his sidekick were a whirlwind of moving power. Friendly, chatty, but not the kind of chatty that slows progress. He was amazing. These guys are amazing. I received several different quotes for a move from Morgan Hill, CA to Elk Grove, CA and almost every other company I spoke with wanted to just charge me hourly, including charging to round trip drive time. Rick and his group are amazing. He came to our house, looked at everything, gave us tips on how to pack and organize certain things and gave me a fixed fee quote. They busted their butt. We went from a two-story, five bedroom house to a two-story four bedroom house and they were able to move everything over two days. Day 1 was loading up both trucks. Day 2 was driving to Elk Grove and unloading. If they didn't know where something was supposed to go, they asked and of course moved furniture exactly where we wanted it, set up beds, etc. Not a single item was damaged or broken, not a scratch on the wall, nothing. They even tore down and set up our Lazy Boy sectional couch that is a total beast. I'd use them again for sure. read more

Okay, these guys are it! They moved us, my studio, heave equipment and all of our art into our new home. We have an extremely high amount of high dollar items. They took great care with everything and it all made it here with flying colors. The 5 man crew + 2 trucks showed up on time, worked hard all day with very few breaks, were very professional and courteous and took great care with all of our items. They placed them in the appropriate rooms for us as well. They moved us out of a rental home and 3 storage rooms so there was a lot of stuff. Rick estimated the time it would take to within a half hour. Rick knows his stuff, has a terrific crew, is very professional and tried very hard to place an unusual shaped couch in several places. They took a door off, tried to go through the window and then finally had to place this couch ustairs through a tight return on our staircase. He really, really tried to get it where I wanted it. If you want a move that comes in at quote, if you want great care taken with your things, if you want to deal with professionals that have a great attitude then deal with My Dad's Moving and Rick. By far the best moving experience I've EVER had (and I've moved 4 times over the last 4 yrs)!! I almost want to move again just so I can use them (okay not quite, but I would definitely use them again if I had to move!) - They showed up on time (actually 10 min early) - They were efficient, quick, and finished earlier than any other company has for our moves - There were no extra charges whatsoever, no fineprint, nothing sneaky or shady - They didn't take any breaks, not even a lunch break (they just took a few bites here and there and kept on moving) - They were nice and friendly the entire time, you can tell they've worked w/ each other for a long time - They took GREAT care of our furniture. I called up My Dad's Moving yesterday to move a fridge from a friend's second floor apartment to my condo some distance away. I was happy to find that they could pencile me in for the following morning. When they got to the apartment they quickly got to work moving the fridge which they did with a great amount of care, they were certainly more careful than I'd have been if I'd done the move myself. Rick and Manny moved us this past weekend, and it went incredibly smoothly. I called only about a week ahead of time to schedule a Saturday move (last Saturday of the month, no less) and Rick was able to fit me in first thing (7am) on Saturday morning. They showed up 15 minutes early and after a quick walk-thru got immediately to work. It was a 2-bedroom unit on the second floor plus garage and they had almost everything moved out by 10am. Without even stopping for lunch or a break they were over to the new place and had everything unloaded in great time. Rick wears a headset so he doesn't even have to stop moving to take calls from other customers! Throughout, they were friendly and respectful of our time, our places, and our stuff. Everything made it through in mint condition, including glass tables and lots of art. Not one scuff on a wall all day. We laughed because I had a second furniture delivery (from a store) at the same time and within 30 seconds that crew banged the wall twice. Makes you realize how great the professionals are. Rick and his crew were great throughout. They were very reasonably priced and did exactly what they said with no fuss, no muss, no excuses. We had a one-minute phone conversation during which he said he'd be there at 8am; when I seemed a little nervous about having no written confirmation, he volunteered that I could call him the day before to verify that he'd be there. The best thing these guys did was to notice that I had a bunch of clothes on hangers, and encourage me to use a bunch of their wardrobe boxes to let them move it all. I never asked for the wardrobe boxes in advance because I was going to move all those clothes in my car some other day, but I'm glad I let Rick and Shawn move them because it saved me a lot of time. They also volunteered to move a few other things, which was great. Like some others, I was a little surprised when I saw the bill, since it worked out to more than what I had figured according to the clock. I was happy to pay it, however, and added a good (I hope) tip, because of the smooth job they did overall. Nothing got broken, and they patiently made sure everything was placed where I wanted. I have used these guys three times in the last year and a half. We never have a straight forward move, mostly due to difficult access to the locations where we choose to live. These guys work with us, show up on time, text/call with updates, have been flexible when we need them to be, and the crews are always pleasant to work with. The charges are consistent with what I have been charged/quoted for the area. I am hoping to never move again. But if I do, I will call these guys again in a hot minute. read more

Rick and his crew were amazing in the organization and efficient manner in packing and unloading my stuff! They were careful with my items and followed direction for placement. Was so impressed with their ability to move my elliptical from the third floor to my single story home (small hallway and doorway) without a scratch or ding! All of the crew was very polite and professional. Would highly recommend them to do a good job for anyone on the move. read more
