Dropped in to check out My Father's Moustache on James Island. I had heard good things about it from friends so felt like giving it a try. My Father's Moustache has an old English Pub atmosphere and offers both English and Irish cuisine. They have an extensive selection of beers (Draft, bottles and cans) as well as whiskey. This is such a unique place! Really lives up to the pub reputation with billiards, darts, shuffleboard and more. The food was also excellent. I had the fish and chips with French fries and crisp, sweet coleslaw. So good! I had a nice pint of beer to compliment my dinner. The service here is wonderful. The bartenders are very attentive and I love that their happy hour goes until 7 PM. Their happy hour includes half priced appetizers. My favorite is the mozzarella sticks or the chicken wings. It also comes with a huge drink menu. They have trivia on Wednesdays that starts at seven, so there is plenty of time to get off work, decompress and go play trivia. Perhaps my favorite thing about this establishment is the fact that they have a Photo Booth. read more

At 5 PM, we were told our group of 15 could be seated outside and they would get the bar ready outside for us, so we wouldn't have to go back and forth. 15 min later, after asking again what's going on, we were told someone had to run to the liquor store for alcohol for the outside bar. Then we were told they won't have a bartender for outside until 6??? Then why did you tell us at 5 we could sit outside and you would get the bar ready for us? Very confusing. I won't bore you with the details - but the service was not great, the food wasn't great (fish and chips were mediocre at best), and it made we wish we chose a different location for dinner. Expecting Tennents ale (Scottish!), we were not disappointed as we sat at the lengthy bar which faces 4 large TVs (unfortunately, closed captioning was not on) with various sports channels on. Quick, attentive service by two of the outgoing and friendly staff with little waiting. The "British BLT" (see photo) was on sourdough bread (a bit chewy on the edges) with delicious Applewood bacon, tomato, and a rosemary aoili which was like a thinner, tastier mayonnaise but with the distinct but muted rosemary. I don't know the words you're using right now or it's cold fuck in here too HOT! Be careful cuz these two items will burn you. The Irish stew didn't have any meat it was disappointing. Almost like the cook didn't stir the pot and just grabbed the ladle to pour out some broth. My English Breakfast was not great this time. The food was not great this time. We came on a Sunday last time and it was amazing. They are definitely short staffed and I get that but the food was not as good as the last time we came here. I always love a British themed place. I went into My Father's Moustache and was pleased to see they offered a full English breakfast. It wasn't terribly busy but it took more than 30 minutes for the breakfast to come up. If I ever get asked what the worst breakfast I ever had was, now I know. The food looked like it had been sitting under a lamp. The mushrooms had a terrible flavor and had shriveled up. The tomato was just a clod of mush. The English muffin had a bizarre artificial flavor and it didn't seem like butter, but a big glob of margarine. It wasn't burned but had a burned taste. I wondered if it had been microwaved? Not sure what happened. The eggs were fine, but the sausage and bacon a bit under par. The baked beans aren't the British style, just your standard generic ones. Don't call this an English breakfast. It dishonors the traditional meal. Service was poor. The guy who took my order may have been the bartender until a lady took over. He'd look over sometimes as if to ponder: "why doesn't that guy have food? Why is his water cup empty?" But, no. He never came over. I get this feeling that this is the norm for My Father's Moustache. I wouldn't try them again. It's always good to try a new place though. read more

There is good and not so good here. Fish and chips is good. Use to be 2 smaller pieces you could eat w your hands. Now it's one big one. Becuse of the size now you realize the breading is too greasy. We like to try new places and did so for this one. Its an Irish bar that has a brunch on Sunday. There isn't any ambience to enhance the experience. First it took 45 minutes from seating to our food. We both had eggs: not properly cooked...mine scrambled eggs (dry without any seasoning). Her's runny also no seasoning. Mine a piece of toast and home fries, and two pieces of cold bacon. Her's English muffin, beans (assume out of a can; no spices or flavor), and a good piece of sausage. The tomato accompaniment was a thin outside slice, not ripened with a hard core. The servers were over worked, could have used an additional body, and kitchen understaffed without an experienced cook. Overall food wasn't good, service slow and too expensive for out fare. We arrived at 6pm, there were older local men there who greeted each other and seemed familiar with the server. It had an English pub feel but the darkness felt more dingy than pub like. GF items labeled which was great! The actual menu really needed to be wiped down, it was dirty/had food on it. My husband enjoyed the beers on tap with Happy Hour prices from 4:00-7:00. Hostess and server were attentive. Did not wait long for food. I give the bangers and mash a 7/10. Sausage and green beans were good. Mashed potatoes had some texture like they were real, but tasted instant. Burger was rated 5/10 by my husband. He got the Churchill burger and said he could not taste all the flavors promised on the description and the bun tasted weird. They were out of fries! So tater tots with a burger? Fish and chips... had tater tots. My soda tasted very fresh and good, syrup was not old. Bathroom needed dusting and more deeper clean in the stalls. Trivia night started at 7:00- was loud yet hard to hear. A digital TV version of trivia may be better. Table was wiped and clean, not sure about floors bc it was dark. read more

Re-review: as I said in my previous review, I enjoyed the burger, and I wished that I would have tried the more British food that the pub was known for. I will say I think I preferred the burger. The fish was tasty, it was cod, the meat was cooked well, flaky and glistening. It was beautiful, it was a huge portion, I only ate half of it. The fries, were delicious, I was very impressed with how crispy they were, only oversight was they put the deep fried fish on top of the fries and made them soggy. Overall, I think it was overly greasy (but I ordered fish and chips, so to be expected). Last time I enjoyed the burger in the comfort of your own home. The only downside of eating in was the noise. There were only a few people in the restaurant there but it was so loud that I couldn't really hear the company I was with, it was night club level sounds coming from one table in specific. Yes, they won't be there every time... but it is a pub, not fine dining. Not really my scene, much rather take home to eat quietly. I'm an introvert. The service, was great our server was attentive and answered our questions, the menu was outdated so our waiter gave us good suggestions on what would be good substitutions. He also mentioned that my fish came with coleslaw which I'm not a fan of, and he said I could opt out of it so no food waste! We've been meaning to go here for years while living in Mount Pleasant. Now we're on Johns Island and they opened a second location on James Island. A great British restaurant! I fist asked for a Guinness and it was perfect! Always a good sign. We're we're a table of four. The bartender acknowledged us and we picked a table. We were waited on right away. An order of Onion Soup, and order of Loaded Baked Potato soup, a short rib sandwich and a Bangers and Mash. Everyone complimented on their meals. The Bangers and Mash was a full meal. The string beans were cooked perfectly too. It's a great spot. One we'll be back often. I'm sad that we didn't discover this back in Mount Pleasant. read more

Oh my Crown Jewels, it was perfection. They even offered the British brown sauce that I've only ever read about in my books from across the pond. The ambiance is fitting for a pub (sports of all sorts playing on multiple screens and snooker and shuffleboard and darts); however, there is an odd counter in the front with a sushi chef (insert shrug), but the food. I can't give this place an awful rating because I've been here plenty of times and there is one bartender (who I think is the owner/ possible manager) who is super friendly and attentive. He's middle aged and typically wears a backwards baseball cap. I've been here a dozen times and every visit is a different experience. I went last night and my boyfriend and I were ignored at the bar for almost 10 min (5/28). The male bartender kept making eye contact with us and seemed to be purposely ignoring us. He even proceeded to pet a dog who came into the bar after several mins of us just standing there waiting to be acknowledged. Finally the female bartender greeted us and we gave her our order. She seemed annoyed when I asked her for our drinks. We ordered 2 beers and 2 shots. After several min she still wasn't making our drinks and kept talking to what seemed to be regulars, so we left. We both work food and Bev ourselves and the service we received was absolutely horrible. I planned on meeting friends here for happy hour this week but after the recent trip I told them we will have to find a different place. I won't be back for a while. The service here (besides the guy I was talking about in the beginning) needs a huge adjustment. The time before this we went for happy hour and ordered the nachos. Idk what kind of cheese this place uses for its nachos but it was not good at all. Had a subtle taste of peanuts and their chicken had almost a bbq sauce taste.
