First time coming here. Had chicken cutlet sandwich- small. Sandwich was great bread nice & soft.

Just like everyone else in the area, I HAD to try this place after all the reviews. Well, I'm disappointed. I got 2 heroes for a block party. They were both the round 4-foot variety. One was Italian, the other was chicken cutlet. The Italian one was OK, but they put way too much black pepper on it. That's fine for me, but not my guests. It was overpowering. The Chicken Cutlet was one of the worst sandwiches I have ever had. The chicken was so tough we could barely chew through it. Way overcooked and too much breading. We threw out about 3 of the 4 feet. I also got mac, potato, and cole slaw. Not good at all. They don't seem to take pride in their food at all. They just try to bang out as much as they can for maximum profit and stopped caring about quality. That was my impression. The other issue I had was when I picked up the heroes, the place was closed, but the entire staff was making heroes. However, I noticed a few staff members not using gloves (especially the older woman, maybe the owner) while they placed the meat and cheese on the hero. The place isn't exactly too clean, so this was a huge turn off to me. Lastly, they didn't have my food ready on time. The older man bitched out one of the younger workers because apparently he forgot to tell him that I was picking up a salad, so he'd have to make it while I waited. The old man told me it would be a half hour, so when I kinda repeated him "A HALF HOUR??" the younger man said no, don't listen to him, I'll get it done in 5 minutes. Well, it still took 25 minutes of me standing there watching them make sandwiches with their dirty hands. Never again will I order from here. read more

Quite possibly the best subs in America. I'm the second generation of my family to loyally patronize My Hero; when I visit from out-of-state it's my very first eatery to hit (after Mom's cooking). But let's cover the checklist for your good experience: Cash only. Big lines at peak lunchtime. They do work hard and for the attention this place gets (especially all the convoluted catering orders), they move things admirably fast. Finally, it's a small lot and street parking only. Some neighboring businesses would happily lure you to their empty lot and tow you in a heartbeat. My Hero posts signs warning about this because, like Jesus to Mrs. Robinson, they love you more than you will know. Okay, so what makes this place excel? Their cheeses and meats are immaculate, always a great way to start. They also design a menu and stick to what works. Some of their specialty subs have achieved a near scientifically perfect balance: the cool crisp Champ and the savory Chicken Club come to mind. And the bread is top-notch. This is the European loaf taste and texture at its finest, firm and sturdy for supporting a thick sandwich, yet soft and simple as you tear into it. If the bread makes the sub (and it does) this is the stuff dreams are made of. Small and unassuming, My Hero is a hidden behemoth of a local fixture. Between the subs' quality and variety, the straightforward professional staff, and the in-store showcasing of local business cards, they are a true community gem. If anything ever happens to them, I'm convinced Merrick and Bellmore will snap off from Long Island and drown sorrowfully in the Atlantic like a defeated pirate ship. read more

Best Deli.. They made me a hero that knocked my socks off! and they made 3 foot hero for my game day. I LOVE MY HERO !!!

I've only been here a few times and it was okay, it's deli food after all. That being said I've never had such garbage service until today. My sandwich was left sitting as my counter person wandered off doing other things. I literally waited 15 minutes for a sandwich that takes 30 seconds to make. After seeing 2 customers served after me leave with multiple sandwiches, another worker asked why I was still waiting! My counter person then figured out what he was doing and proceeded to absolutely drown my sandwich in oil. He then walked up to me and called me impatient! I was absolutely blown away. Look I get it the food business sucks. But to be this incompetent at such a menial job makes me question the management and consequently my food. The owner seemed nice enough but seriously in this economy there's no reason to settle for such inept workers. I recommend John moore's deli on merrick road in bellmore. read more

Old school style sandwich joint that will serve you what you order, only it will taste better than it ever has, or does anywhere else for that matter. Chicken club and the Champ are the two things to order here. Sit outside and there is a 25 to 50% chance you see somebody fight over their highly prized parking spots. read more

Favorite hero spot. Heroes are ginormous and everything is fresh and delicious. One hero is good for lunch and dinner. Great breakfast sandwiches too. Call early to get your order in for pickup. During the lunch rush you'll never get through on the phone and the line can get long. Bring cash and don't park in the Carvel lot as they have towed cars. I recommend the all American with the works, the Chicken club, the roast beef melt, and the chicken parm. This place never disappoints. read more

Whoever gives My Hero less than 5 stars needs to be banned forever from there. The food is delicious, the prices so reasonable, and the servings tremendous. Yes, if you go there during the peak of lunch hour you will wait in line for 30+ minutes, but HEY, thats a testament to how great it is. Best time to go it around 4:30-5:30 Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday nights. read more

I got lucky & was just able to beat the line which wraps around outside,The guys behind the counter were hustling for the busy lunch crowd but were very nice, they have a great big working station back there to serve up these delicious heroes that everyone raves about!it's almost like a gigantic wood carving station if you will with all the fresh delicious ingredients right there for them to make the line go pretty quick, it's like a well oiled machine,THIS is what "Subway"should be about in my opinion! not some puney sandwich with no meat melted in amicrowave give me a break! It's always the mom-and-pop deli/hero shops that stand out above the rest! This place certainly has a buzz even though it looks like it was last updated in the 90s in/out lol I had to go with their most popular hero "the champ" and added "the works",not only does this hero look mouthwatering it tastes incredible!The Italian meats overflowing r so so fresh and the provolone cheese is just the right complement, then adding the works (lettuce tomato oil vinegar pepper )totally topped it off!,love how the oil and vinegar seeps into the bread to make it moist it should be called the moist maker' in my opinion not the works'!Lol anyway check this place out for lunch and you will certainly not be disappointed and be back over and over again!they have been in business since the 70s and there's a reason why!just don't forget to hit the gym the next day LOL read more

Overall the food is very good so I decided to order platters for my sons graduation party to be picked up on Sunday morning.Paid in advance for two 3 foot round heros and a platter of pickles and olives. Since I was at the graduation I sent someone else to pick up the food. We I got back after at 2 pm I noticed there was no pickle/olive platter since it was after 11 when they closed I was not able to call about it. In addition the sandwiches were a little light on the meat. One slice each of the turkey ham and cheese. Not what I expected. Overall I would still go there for regular sandwiches but would have to think twice about ordering catering and if I did I would definitely check the order before I left. read more

I was hungry and in the area of this place again. So I figured I'll try it out. There was a pretty long line but it went very fast. I ordered the Chicken Club sandwich. It was ready in about 3-4 minutes. Cost $7 and change. The sandwich tasted good but nothing to brag about. I come here quite frequently to get a Champ hero, large of course. It is simply the best cold cut hero you gonna buy with your money. Delicious and price is great compared to other places. Do yourself a favor and call ahead to save yourself the time of waiting on line. The line could be long and intimidating during peak hours. read more

This place is my FAVE but you usually can't get in the door! The key is ordering before you go. They have the best sammys and their homemade stuff is really good too (chicken salads, soups, etc). I am only on this page because I'm about to order some catering from them too! :) read more

My workplace regularly orders food from here ( $250 or more a week ). These guys are really hard to like. We order $100 worth of food for lunch at a time and they never include plates/silverware, never include anything for free, and COMPLAIN about cutting the sandwiches into 1/4 pieces. I mean really??? Working in Uniondale on Hempstead Tpk offers little in lunch options. I made the 10 minute drive down to Bellmore to get a sub at My Hero. Parking is tight in their tiny lot and your bet is to park in the street. Signs warn against parking in the giant lot next door at Carvel. Apparently people have been towed. Carvel's lot is huge, btw, and never full. They should make some sort of cooperative deal. Anyway, I walked in just in time as about 10 people came in right after me. My Hero opened in 1968 and just looks like your quintessential old school sub shop. I ordered the small antipasto hero, which is the same as the Champ, (basically an Italian hero) but also has roasted peppers and olives. You can get the hero in a small or large size, and depending on how hungry you are, both can be finished by one person. They use a fair amount of meat, plus finely shredded lettuce (the secret to a great cold sub) tomatoes, salt, pepper, and oregano(or similar greenish spice.) My one complaint is that they put the oil and vinegar onto the meats in the middle rather than on the bread. This time I asked for it on the bread first. If you get your sub to go,and the oil/vinegar was put on the meats, its runs off then runs out of the wrapping paper and bag and goes all over my car. If you're eating in the restaurant, its not big deal, but unless you want your car seats stained and your car to smell like a deli, its a problem. Yes, I know it makes the bread soggy. These are compromises we all have to make in life. Hopefully the location of your oil/vinegar on your sub is the biggest dilemma of your day. Great place. Go, you'll enjoy it. read more

Perfect spot to grab a quick lunch. When I ordered watched the dude make my sandwhich in less then two minutes freshly slicing everything. Quality bread, just a great spot overall. Definitely would not suggest eating there though simply because its a cramped space. Will be going there VERY soon. read more

We realized how much we missed My Hero today. The Roast Beef hero was as good as it gets. Sooo fresh. Always a line, but worth the wait.

Cheap meats in the sandwich and def not cut thin. The champ is decent, but Iannuzzi deli is way better. If you go here, I recommend the knish stuffed with pastrami and Swiss. read more

The people on here that have given this place less than 4 stars must have something wrong with their taste buds. I have been to ALOT of places and am very type A so I tend to eat a lot of the same types of food. I'm not sure I've had better sandwiches in my life. Plain and simple. The chicken club is phenomenal the all american - classic - add bacon for an extra explosion of deliciousness. roast beef melt - order it hot all the way or regular - either way the full loaf of garlic bread it comes on leaves you amazed that a pound of roast beef could taste so delicious Chicken Parm - VERY good, not chicken club or RBM status but defintiely worth a try Meatball Parm - VERY good The Champ - Probably the weakest out of the others mentioned but still good. Its a typical italian except with plenty of meat another note is the bread: For some reason, the bread at my hero is just amazing. If you find another place that gives you a pound and a half of meat on a $7 sandwich, let me know, I'll go check it out but I can't imagine you will. read more

First time here and I wish I found this place sooner! My mind isn't easily blown by sandwiches, but wow this place did it! Got turkey, egg, and cheese on a roll. I don't know what they do to the eggs, but they were fried perfectly. Tasted super authentic, which I realize is a weird thing to say about an egg sandwich but I can't find the words to do it justice. My husband got the American hero. Wow! I almost liked his even better. They add pepper, olive oil, and vinegar to the sandwich which just puts it over the top. The bread was also delicious. Definitely coming back here to get a proper hero for my next catered event. read more

I stopped going to subway when i found my hero. They make great sandwiches for good prices. To me what makes or breaks a good sandwich from a great sandwich is the bread, and my hero has great bread.
