Quite possibly the best hero I have ever eaten. Their Italian Hero is known here as "The Champ". The meat is fresh and stacked high. But I believe what makes this place superior is the fresh bread. Used to be soooo good. Now they have new employees messing up the order. They failed to toast my sandwich and also gave me turkey instead of chicken. Food is great!!! But the customer service sucks! Try getting one of them on the phone around lunch time!!! All u hear is a busy tone. And if u do get them on the phone nothing but attitudes. The line is always out the door but goes kinda quick sometimes not always. But honestly I don't care that they have great food, if the staff is obnoxious and rude that's enough for me to not go there and give my business to them. BRING CASH! They don't take credit but it's worth the hassle and the wait. The line was out the door when we got there. My son and I both ordered the large size sandwiches and honestly, we could have shared one. They're GIANT! My son had the meatball hero and the taste was as close to homemade as I've ever had dining out. I got the chicken supreme with super crispy chicken cutlets, sweet peppers, and the works. Without question the best place on Long Island to get a hero. The inside of it isn't updated or furnished like your regular subway, but when you first receive your sandwich you'll understand why you had to wait on a line out the door. Great subs, Fantastic, some of the best on the island. Only problem is that they are closed on Sundays. If the wait is long, they are right next to JC Walkers which is also a great establishment, stop in there while you wait for some Dipsy Doodles. The latest Atrocity was a Roast Beef Melt, which was neither melted nor on Garlic Bread. When I see MELT I associated that with a warm sandwich with MELTED cheese. If they are too busy to make it correctly take it off the menu. After reading all the positive reviews it's finally dawned on me that mediocre is the new standard of excellence. Came here while visiting family in Long Island and was looking for a good sandwich spot. The place is extremely busy with long lines but it moves fairly fast considering. There are several people serving behind the counter. Extensive selection with fresh products and good daily specials. Used to be my go to spot,,,not so much. Past 3 times i've gone there the chicken has been old and no flavor. But the last time i went was the worst,,,i stood there for a good 5 minutes while the people chatted amongst themselves and other people that didn't work there but were apparently friends. i was ready to leave when finally someone said can i help you? um yeah,,duh. So i ordered my usual chicken cutlet hero and i said please no mayo,,,and light lettuce. Well i got home and the thing was SMOTHERED in mayo and tons of lettuce and no bacon and it was absolutely horrible. My bf will eat pretty much anything and he wouldn't even touch it. i wound up throwing the whole debacle in the garbage is was that gross. The food is good as always but the service has gotten worse every year since the original owner retired. Now the place is run by a bunch of children who spend more time playing than they do working. No question in my mind that this place truly is hands down the best place to get a hero at least in Long Island. I have been going there for years and its a true mom and pop shop that gives you that neighborhood feel and the food is top notch. Once you choose a hero you can add "the works" to it which on top of your sandwich includes .. mayo, onions, oregano and oil and vinegar. Of course lettuce and tomato are generally standard fair as well. I was always a fan of blimpie and when you add the works you really get that blimpie feel with plus real boars head cold cuts and some of the freshest bread you will ever have. The champ is the staple which is basically an italian sub but the chicken club which uses fresh fried chicken cutlets is my favorite! If its your first visit go easy and stick with the regular size sub. I guarantee you will be back often so I'd invest in a good pair of sweatpants with a lot of room for expansion now, before its too late! Parking is a mess so park next door in the Carvel lot and walk over. read more
