    Gel X manicure
    Caitlyn M.

I made an appointment online with Stephanie for a gel x (hard gel) manicure. The salon is small but clean overall. She did a good job and checked in with me throughout the mani to double check the length, and shape of my nail as well as the color. She also cleaned my cuticles and shaped my nails well. It took over an hour but I'm happy with how the nails came out. It's $75 (not including tip) for gel x for one color, any designs cost extra.

I am very disappointed with my recent experience at this salon. I came in for a French gel manicure. Before this appointment, I had hard gel on my nails. The technician did not remove the existing hard gel before starting the new French gel manicure. Once she began the process, she told me that the result would not look nice because my nails were uneven. She then said that I should have explained what needed to be done and that it was my responsibility to tell her how to handle the previous hard gel. This was very surprising and unprofessional to hear. As a client, I am not expected to know the technical process of removing or applying different nail products. That is the technician's job and professional responsibility. There was no offer to correct the issue properly, no solution suggested, and no discount provided despite the unsatisfactory result. I left the salon very unhappy with both the service and the final look of my nails. I believe this experience was handled in an unprofessional manner, and I expected much better guidance and expertise from a licensed nail technician.

ABSOLUTE DISASTER: owner of Nail Box unhinged and repeatedly raging "I know how to do nails!!!"

ABSOLUTE DISASTER I was expecting to receive a professional hard gel manicure from a technician qualified to perform the service. Instead, I was assigned to a manicurist who was unfamiliar with the hard gel process. Throughout the appointment, the salon owner simultaneously provided step-by-step instructions to the technician on how to perform the service while multitasking other shop matters including being occupied with another customer. As a paying customer, I did not agree to be a practice model for someone learning how to perform hard gel manicures. I paid for a completed professional service and did not receive one. The owner instructed the technician to apply a super-thin hard gel base and thick layers of polish that immediately air bubbled. When I asked for correction, the owner gaslit me before attempting to fix it. The tech then tried to further fix it by filing the side shape of my nails which just scraped off the polish and left me with ugly, streaky, bare edges. The quality of the manicure was unacceptable. The unfinished product I received contains numerous defects, including: * Uneven application of the base hard gel, polish, and top coat * Visible air bubbles in the gel * Unpainted edges around the nails * Excess polish applied onto the surrounding skin on all ten fingers * Residual black polish remaining on my skin days after the appointment despite attempts to remove it The photographs clearly show the poor workmanship and lack of professional finish. Following the service, I requested that the salon either correct the manicure or remove the product. Both requests were denied by a raging owner who kept repeating "I know how to do nails." The tech was sweet, but the owner is unhinged and the quality is terrible. AVOID THIS PLACE

My old nail tech retired this past winter and so my friend who lives in San Mateo let me know her nail place is opening a spot in sf and low and behold it is right my by house! Hallelujah! Hahah my friend's nails were always on point so I was excited to try and they have been great! It is so hard to find a good nail salon, so extremely happy I found one. My nails last longer, at least 4 weeks, don't break and the design so far has been good if not better then where I used to go. Highly recommend go check them out! Mintra is the artist I go with but they are all highly skilled and I definitely plan to go back.

Gel X (S) with cat eye base and custom design by Ye Qian

Just got my nails done by Ye Qian at the 3rd St location. She is a true artist! I showed her some inspo pics and the dress I am wearing to a wedding this weekend. Based on those, she created these gorgeous nails She is very detail oriented & kept checking in with me to see if I was happy with the color/design. The Gel X were set perfectly straight and there are no inconsistencies in the color. I am so happy with these nails - they are insane! I feel like they could easily have cost $300, but total price was $95. Stunning! Thank you Ye Qian - I'll be back again for sure!

Mintra is the best! She did an amazing job with my nails and the design was exactly the same as the inspo photo I shared! She made the appointment fly by with her kindness and fun companionship during the appointment! I am telling all my friends to see Mintra at Nail Box! Mintra has the best vibe!

I usually go to their Daly City location and have been a customer for almost two years now. When I found out they were opening a San Francisco location, I was genuinely excited, especially since it's so close to my work. I've always had consistently great experiences with their team. The staff is welcoming, professional, and really takes the time to make you feel comfortable and well taken care of. The quality of service has been reliable every single visit, which is why I keep coming back. The new SF location maintains the same high standards I've come to expect, with a clean, modern space and a convenient location that makes it easy to stop by before or after work. I'm so happy to have this option closer to me now and will definitely continue supporting them. Highly recommend to anyone looking for consistent, quality service and a great overall experience.

    gel application is slightly sloppy

I got a gel overlay manicure and after leaving I'm noticing little details and it feels overpriced for the quality ($75 not including tip). The shaping and polish application is sloppy, and there are some bubbles in the gel, overall the manicure looks fine until you look closer. For $75 I'd recommend leaving the city to the other Nail Box locations. I got a beautiful gel-x set at the Daly City location for a wedding and loved it, so I won't be back at the SF location.

    Gel pedicure

I had a gel pedicure from Cici on Saturday, February 7, 2026. Today is February 11, 2026, and the cost was $60, even though I had booked the $50 service. It's already starting to wear off. The last time I received the same service, it only cost $50. I'm confused about the pricing and the differences compared to my previous visit, as I'm not clear on how transparent their system is.

I came here because of the stellar reviews and nail pics on Yelp and social media, but the service…read moreand quality of work were extremely disappointing and did not match my expectations. I do not recommend getting a Gel-X mani here. First, the recommendation I was given didn't make sense. My natural nails had grown out pretty long, so I asked for hard gel. Multiple staff members recommended Gel-X extensions instead for the design I wanted. My natural nails were only slightly shorter than my reference image, but I wanted to trust their expertise. I was wrong. I chose the shorter extension length and it ended up being the same length of my natural nail before the tech cut them, so the extensions added nothing and I unnecessarily had my nails cut. Second, the application quality doesn't match the price. There are ill-fitting corners throughout. Rather than sizing up to an extension that fit my nail bed, the tech filed down my side walls to force the smaller one to fit, which hurt. One extension on my index finger is visibly crooked. I pointed it out and was told it looked straight - looking at it again and in photos, it's clearly off-center. There's also still cured gel on my skin, which is a contact dermatitis risk. Third, the pricing was not transparent. I paid $115 for a Gel-X removal and Gel-X manicure. The pricing on the website and at check-in is confusing, and when I showed my inspiration photo up front, no one quoted me. The tech told me the price, $155, only after she had already started the design. I got it down to $115 by dropping the star flakes, which were $40 on their own. I want to pay techs fairly for their work, but $40 for star flakes isn't worth it. To be fair, there were genuine positives. I called to let them know I was running 10 minutes late and the staff were completely understanding about it. And when I asked for a swirl cat eye design, my tech told me upfront that it was above her skill level rather than overpromising. She still gave it a shot, and I really appreciated that honesty. Overall, I can't recommend this place. The quality of work and service don't match the price, and what frustrates me more is that the staff didn't listen to my questions and were quick to shut me down instead of working with me. Given the reviews here, I'll assume this isn't the standard, and that it's fixable.

Under the previous owners, Laura and Danny, the salon felt welcoming and personal. Over the years, we got to know them and many of the people who worked there, and we brought the business a great deal of repeat business. Unfortunately, since they retired and sold the business to Lux SF2, my experiences have changed dramatically. My longtime technician is still wonderful, and I have nothing but positive things to say about her. Unfortunately, the overall atmosphere and customer service have gone downhill. The manager who now runs the salon consistently comes across as angry and unwelcoming. There is rarely a hello or any effort to make customers feel welcome, and it seems that the employees are uncomfortable around her. There is also another employee who has displayed the same type of behavior toward customers. The problems really came to a head when my partner was accidentally charged double for a service. He noticed the overcharge immediately and was told that it would be corrected and refunded within a day or so. It wasn't. After three phone calls over the course of 10 days, the money still had not been refunded. We ultimately let the matter go because he returned to the salon and received the pedicure he had already paid for. Instead of simply resolving the issue professionally, the manager became angry and raised her voice at my partner, insisting that the money had already been refunded when it had not. My partner eventually contacted the manager at their sister salon on Hayes Street to explain what had happened. Apparently, that made the situation even worse, because the manager then confronted him and became even more upset with him in the salon. Then came my experience last night. I had a punch card that had been started under the previous ownership. I had one punch remaining for a complimentary manicure. This card had already been punched by the current salon seven times out of ten, so they clearly had been honoring it. After receiving my manicure, I presented the card and was suddenly told that I had to pay an additional $5 because it was an "old" card from the previous owner. When I questioned this, I was told that they don't honor the old cards--even though they have continued punching mine and accepting it as valid. If the salon no longer intends to honor a loyalty program, that should have been clearly communicated to customers before they continued accepting and stamping those cards. The situation became even more uncomfortable when the male employee raised his voice at me in front of other customers and began bringing up my partner's refund issue from a month and a half earlier. I explained that the matter had already been dealt with, but he continued to argue with me and speak to me disrespectfully. Meanwhile, the manager, who was present and is supposedly running the salon, never stepped in to de-escalate the situation or address the behavior. I eventually left and went to the main Lux SF location up the street to speak with management. The manager there was apologetic, listened to what happened, and treated me with the professionalism and courtesy I would have expected from the salon in the first place. There are also growing concerns about cleanliness and sanitation that I have noticed during my recent visits. The chairs and workstations appear to have a layer of nail dust on them, and sanitizing the stations does not seem to be the priority it once was. I have also observed pedicure stations not being sprayed with what appeared to be bleach/disinfectant after each use. Given the nature of the services being provided, this is particularly concerning to me. I plan to contact the appropriate health department to report what I have observed and ask them to determine whether the salon is following the required sanitation procedures. It is incredibly disappointing to see a place that we supported for so many years change this much. Customers should not feel like they are walking into an environment where employees are angry, customers are spoken to disrespectfully, charges are inconsistent, or legitimate concerns are met with confrontation. A business cannot build a lasting customer base by treating people this way. In my opinion, if the current management continues to create an atmosphere of anger, disrespect, and distrust--and if customers feel they are being overcharged or treated unfairly whenever there is an opportunity to do so--the business will eventually lose the loyal customers who helped sustain it for years. I genuinely hope Lux SF2 takes these concerns seriously. There is still an opportunity to turn things around, but that starts with treating customers and employees with basic respect, being transparent about pricing and loyalty programs, properly addressing billing issues, and making cleanliness and sanitation a priority again.
