Move over Frank and Kru, Naoki is in town! This might be my new fav sushi spot in town. I preferred the Suki roll over the OMFG roll since the tempura on top was more flakey and less pokey. Great new sushi spot with fresh high-quality fish! I came here after trying to go to KRU and was told to have an hour long wait. I am very glad that I decided to come try this new sushi spot. We ordered the mixed tempura as an appetizer which was one of my favorite mixes. It had eggplant and mushroom, which were atypical vegetables in a temporary mix that worked great. We also got the Paris sashimi set, which came with 16 pieces. The fish was high-quality and even came with fresh wasabi. The Hinoka roll was also fantastic. Super flavorful very satisfying to eat. Overall we were really satisfied with our meal and will definitely be coming back. The main dining room room is nicely renovated with lots of wood accents. There's a decent amount of seating and the food came out very quickly. Given that it is a new restaurant, I think they are still figuring out staffing as we didn't order for a while after being seated, but the servers were nice. I was in Sacramento for a work trip and this was my last evening so I wanted to treat myself to something nice. I looked for sushi spots near by and came across Naoki. Fairly new, solid reviews, and a quick car ride away. I accidentally walked in the wrong door, even though there is a sign that says use other door. I felt so bad! I sat at the sushi bar since I was alone and it was the best experience! The men cutting and preparing were so nice and explained a few things to me. Plus, it's always fun to watch sushi be prepared. I ordered the triple trouble and tried to order some Otoro but they were out! They offered Chutoro instead and explained the differences. It was AMAZING! Good recommendation. When I ordered more, they were out! BUT the amazing man behind the counter let me try to dry aged Chutoro and I could've died happy in that moment. Get the dry aged! It is out of this world! He said the salmon is also very good but I was starting to get so full and work only pays for so much ;) The space is really nice and I liked the ambiance. I'm such a sucker for a good sushi restaurant especially when they want to make sure they're more Japanese forward than gimmicky. Bf and I came here two weeks ago for lunch on a Thursday and had zero complaints from start to finish! We were seated right away and were able to order with zero issues. Fish quality and presentation were all too good, listen I am a salmon girl through and through but their hamachi belly nigiri really did it for me. I'd come back just for that! Food did take awhile to come out as there were about 5 tables and 2 at the bar with only 2 sushi bar chefs. No worries we weren't super hungry yet anyways. It's been a while since a sushi place blew me away. What an amazing feeling to experience that at Naoki today. It's the fish. It's the fish quality and attention to detail in flavors and ingredients. If you're here for the fish, you've come home. I will be back often. Tried Naoki today with my dad, who likes all food just fine, but is seldom moved to declare something "really really good." Dad is just back from one of his many Asia trips to see the family, and was all over this place despite the pricing (which is totally fair and competitive, but in no way feels like a "deal" like he would prefer.) Food quality was excellent, presentation and ingredient choices were fresh and creative, and service was friendly and efficient. It was a damned delight to eat lunch there. It's also hella good and would please the most elegant food snob, while being completely unpretentious -- honestly, they undersell their dishes in the description. They don't try to convince you to order things or tell you what's most popular... it's one of the more dignified lunches I've had recently, and I eat a lot of lunches out. The space is really open and would probably be good for a private event or large party, too. Oh, and the fish fridge! I didn't know about aging fish like meat -- mind slightly blown and I might go down a ChatGPT rabbit hole on this -- the proprietor came out at the end of the meal and showed it to us, and talked us through it b their process, showing photos on his phone. I placed a to go order and it seriously some of the best Japanese food I've had in a while. I ordered the chicken teriyaki entree, tempura (mixed), California roll and the snow crab fried rice. When I say everything was cooked perfectly, I'm not kidding. Great service, fresh food cooked well. The ambiance was nice. Took a visit here, noticed they replaced the previous Japanese restaurant that was here, Koi, which was n out that good. Overall my partner and I had a pleasant dining experience here. The decor and ambience is super cute, the space is really updated, it's modern and bright. Very cute and inviting. We ordered quite a bit and our final verdict is that the food was super hot and fresh, however we found some of the sushi was too salty and had too much going on. For appetizer, we ordered the chicken karaage. The chicken was delicious, it was fresh and hot and straight out the fryer. The disappointing part though was the dip that was offered - just Kewpie mayo it seems, maybe with a hint of lemon? I was disappointed the sauce option for the karaage wasn't stronger, I would've been even pleased with a spicy mayo or something... the chicken was good but it could've been stronger with a nice dipping sauce to pair it with. Not pictured but we also ordered salmon belly nigiri and unagi nigiri. Salmon belly is my absolute favorite and I get super excited when it's on the menu as not many Japanese restaurants carry it. The quality of the salmon belly was super fresh the and portion was very generous for a nigiri, however, such a fatty piece of fish needs some kind of topping to help break it up on the palette. Most places I go to will top it with a little yuzu kosho or offer it to the side. I was a little disappointed it wasn't offered. The unagi nigiri was delicious as expected. The three rolls we ordered were the Dragon Roll, the OMFG Roll and the Volcano Roll. Dragon Roll was solid - tasted a little plain as compared to other places but no denying the quality of the fish and ingredients were super fresh. The other two rolls, OMFG and Volcano, came drenched in sauce. I am all for sauce but the rolls were just completely saturated with mayo, spicy mayo, and unagi sauce. Unagi sauce is suuuuper salty so it kinda was hard to taste the quality of the fish due to this. We felt less would have been better for these rolls since the essence of the roll got lost in the sauce, literally. Overall, the fish quality was great which is super important for sushi, however, we felt some of the rolls and items could use little improvements. We also felt it was a little pricey considering the overall taste of everything was just okay for us. It was good but I'm not sure if it's something we'd come back to. Hopefully there are improvements made for the future since I know they're still in their soft opening! read more

The parking was 10/10 because it was late afternoon. Soon as you walk in you're greeted with a nice, dim lit, ambiance. Japanese decor and statues. A samurai suit right where the host will meet you. It was plenty of seating for us so we picked one near the bar by the window. We had a great feeling about this place. The waiter was attentive and friendly. The chef was super friendly and recommended we try their dry aged salmon. So we did, along side there truffle hamachi, a two way salmon roll (fire), 6 happy hour oysters and a Sake flight. Everything was beautifully presented and well made. 8.6/10 for the oysters, 9.2/10 for the hamachi, and 10/10 for the salmon roll. The flight of sake was super good and it came with a good read about the history of that specific sake and its region. Would definitely come back for date night. Highly recommended. read more

A delightful evening on my street. I've been dying to try Naoki for quite some time now and I finally got the opportunity to dine here. The newly renovated restaurant offers dry aged options as well as fresh sushi. I tried the Shishito Peppers, BBQ Albacore, and the Lion King Roll with a cup of roasted rice tea. All orders were placed and received in a good time frame especially since I walked in an hour before closing. From the moment I sat down to the time to pay my check, the service was wonderful and I even received a compliment on my signature scent when I sat down. I love what has been done with the renovations although I must admit that I do miss feeding the fish (previously there was a koi pond inside the restaurant and patrons paid 25 cents to receive food to feed the fish). All in all, a wonderful evening spent with Naoki's menu with plans to revisit and try other items. read more

If you want the quality of Kru but don't have the patience for their parking and wait times, consider Naoki. The five of us came during the week of the soft opening and upon arriving, the exterior of the building is unassuming. Like a speakeasy, the drab exterior hides a dark and swanky gem. Upon entering, you're immediately transported into another time and place. A robot whirrs around the room while patrons enjoy a meal behind shoji panels and a private chabudai dining table. In the front a dry aged salmon hangs in a cooler by its tail, ready for expert preparation by the sushi chefs. You immediately forget the strip mall facade on the other side of the glass door you entered from. We were greeted promptly and seated soon after our arrival. The restaurant had only a few occupied tables, but it was a Sunday afternoon and still in the soft opening phase. Unfortunately, the room is reverberant, which made the atmosphere a little less comfortable, but luckily there weren't too many people there conversing. We placed our drink orders and appetizers while we discussed amongst ourselves what to order. Seeing as the menu was very fairly priced for the quantity of food compared to Kru, we immediately got excited and placed orders on about half the menu. Once the appetizers arrived, we knew we were in for a treat. The karaage chicken was a star! Perfectly crispy and seasoned, the chicken was juicy and tender on the inside and it came out hot enough to burn us. It was decided we were already off to a good start! The dipping sauce matched up perfectly and turned out to be an excellent complement with our other appetizers as well. Among those were the Brussels sprouts and the Dancing Mushrooms. Everything was hot and delicious. Next up was the Ikayaki, while not a hit with everyone at the table, I thought it was pretty good, but it's definitely an appetizer for the more daring since it contains the complete squid, tentacles and all. I could see in the distance that our main entrees were being prepared, a beautiful selection of fresh fish, wagyu, special rolls, and a generously sized bento box. Our order arrived shortly with our server and robot in tow, and it was a sight to behold! A colorful mix of fish, vegetables, roe, and dipping sauces adorned the table with expertly crafted precision. I didn't realize we ordered lunch AND a show! The server poured water into small containers in each of our sashimi platters and a gentle wisp of smoke wafted around the platter like a movie set. It was time to dig in! The servings were generous, even for our two friends with us that are well over six feet tall and athletic. The fish was fresh and the wasabi is incredible! We ate almost everything family style and not a bite was left behind. Every dish had such unique complexity and distinct flavors. If you're a fan of Kru, you owe it to yourself to give this restaurant a shot, before they get popular. The food is excellent and the prices (for now) are a bargain. We frequent Kru, but if we don't have the patience to wait, Naoki is now on our short list of sushi spots we will happily substitute for quality sushi and sashimi. The service and drink options leave a little to be desired, but those aspects can grow and change over time. Our usual "go to" for sushi was booked on Saturday night so we decided to try Naoki. We ordered an appetizer and two rolls. The spicy edamame was fantastic; our rolls were the Hanoki and Triple Trouble. We thoroughly enjoyed the Hanoki, and while we also liked the Triple Trouble, we had never had sushi before with a lemon slices on top. We would definitely order the Hanoki again (not to mention the spicy edamame). Their wine list featured Revolution winery, which is only a block away. It was great to see them partner with a local winery. The restaurant's interior is very nice with comfortable chairs. Tables are spaced a ways apart so conversation is easy.
