Pricey but so is everything else these days. Appetizers were great. I was excited about the French onion soup but the bread got too mushy while waiting for it to cool down. Maybe serve the bread on the side or cut it up smaller and toast until crouton consistency It arrived at the end of my meal not sure why. I wasn't told why either Chicken in Alfredo isn't freshly grilled Tasted like older unseasoned bits (they should improve this) especially if they're charging over $20 a dish Alfredo sauce was perfect. Pesto can get bitter if you don't use fresh basil or if you heat it. Adorable restaurant has potential either they should up the quality of meat or come down on the prices Our waitress was sweet and wasn't overwhelmed despite clearly being the only one there. Will try the pizza one day. We probably should have all ordered that. Didn't appreciate being seated so closely to other diners. My friends and I had lots of personal matters to discuss and our conversation got heated It was awkward being an elbow length apart from the only 2 parties there. Remove two tables and space the rest out for a more comfortable experience

My husband and I came here during lunch on a weekday. There was maybe 1 or 2 other tables of customers, so we didn't have to wait to be seated. We chose to sit outside because it was a beautiful day! Our waitress took our drink and food order and we only saw her during our meal when she brought our food out. When we were finished, we had to go in and ask for a check. Now, usually I'd be more lenient here on the criticism if it had been more crowded, but we were one of only two total tables for our waitress. We ordered garlic knots for our appetizer which were great! It took about 30 minutes to get them though. For our entree, my husband ordered the Hawaiian pizza and I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Stromboli. My husband enjoyed his pizza well enough, but I had several issues with my Stromboli. 1st, there was VERY little chicken in it. I had to dig for it. 2nd, as shown in the pic, the cheese inside wasn't even melted. How can you burn the outside and not even melt the cheese inside? This tells me that either the cheese wasn't freshly grated OR that the oven temp is too high (or both). I was pretty disappointed. Not sure that I'll spend my money here again.

Update! In restaurant review! We showed up around 11:30am New Years Eve. They had the doors open on the 64 degree day right in front of the huge fountain with the smell of Italian suco cooking and spices wafting in the air. The music was absolutely perfect. The decor was that of a old time established place done gradually by the diy owner and had some character. It also had the feel of a walk in NYC Italian deli to the right with the gingham red table cloths. We were the only ones there the entire time, which is just wrong because the food was high quality! We ordered the meatballs as appetizer. They were minced and soft but firm also. Flavor was good and had breadcrumbs used in them as well. Overall they were very good. However, the sauce it came with reminded me if our family's homemade suco. So it felt so right. Not sweet and not bitter with not everything cooked down so it had some small chunks of tomato and onion remaining. Well spiced perfectly. Real homemade suco and you can tell! She had the chicken piccata which was spot on. However the meat was not pounded thin and although it was two thicker larger breast, the flavor penetrated well through which was shocking for how thick they were. Very tender and well seasoned. I had the lasagna, as a true staple test of a review. The cheese they use I love but is more on the greasy side. But the flavor and firmness was spot on. The meat was a little over seasoned with oregano but does not bother me. Others may find it too strong. I don't remember seeing or tasting any ricotta cheese as stated on the menu and that was disappointing because I love it in lasagna. It was very different than the lasagna upon my door dash order when I first reviewed it. We had to ask for bread after the meal came as I felt the suco would go to waste from the meatballs and my lasagna which is an Italian mortal sin. I made small suco sandwhichs with the rolls. Spot on! They over cooked the roles but they did not taste burned oddly. Had they been cooked less they would be 5 star with the the olive oil butter and garlic. I would suggest adding salt to them on top. Once settled in, the decor, the music, ah man the music was spot on! The sound of the water fountain with open doors really pulled the ambiance all together. Being the only two there was nice but it would also be different experience had it been more crowded. This place should be very busy based on the homemade food, quality ingredients and tastes of authentic Italian which is hard to find locally. It felt like the food was too good to not be much more crowded. The owner was there and very nice, as was the staff. They make their own bread and suco for sure. Overall, I cannot rate a 5 as I would need to try more menu items. Based on others reviews and our own experience it seems there may be consistency problems which is a telltale sign that much of it is homemade. (Thats a good sign.) But expect hit and miss when most of the items are home made and not premade. Overall this is an easy 4 star + but not a 5 star (yet.) I think if they get and stay busier it would force more consistency and improvement and they could easily become a long term staple in the area being highly sought after and successful. Well worth going if you want to try a new place. I was a little shocked at the $18 Stromboli and other costs on the menu but again, this is authentic homemade food and you can tell. It literally reminds me of my Nonna's as she was just as inconsistent due to item availability or just energy levels. I would assume even on a bad day the food would still be good. Absolutely will be one of my go to Italian places when in the area. Try it and experience a taste of real Italy.

Hubby and I dined here late on a Saturday evening. Served by the owner himself! A delicious appetizer of meatballs in marinara and bread. Then we split the Napoli salad and chicken parmigiana. Salad was a wonderful combination of tastes. Dressing great too. The chicken parm was fabulous....tender, juicy and just enough crispness. You could taste the sauce was homemade. Excellent Italian food and atmosphere. Will return on our next trip to Birmingham. If you live nearby, definitely check them out!!

Still getting the restaurant up and fully running, but the inside is quaint. Service was a little slow as I believe the owner was doing multiple duties, host, server, busboy. He's really friendly. Food was really good. It's been a while since I've had good Bruschetta and the Shrimp Scampi was amazing. Will definitely be back to try a different dish.

Eggplant Parmigiana is sooo good! Please visit this place because it's amazing! Everything is homemade!!!!!

I wish I could give them a special sticker or more stars since this place is my all time favorite place. The line during peak hours and warmer days can be long but it's so worth it! You order from a small window and seating is only available outside. I started having Doodle's when I was elementary age when they would take their doodle truck to the soccer field. My first love was the peach sorbet. And my love grew as I continued to try ALL the flavors. My current favorite flavors are peanut butter and cookies and cream. Please try these! Just thinking about them is making me drool. The owners are amazing! Love Mr. Doodle! He even came to my wedding reception and served all my favorite flavors to all my favorite friends and family that traveled in from all over the US. And no shock, but the guests LOVED Doodles. I called ahead and was told the reservation could not be updated, and that I would need to inform the host the day of and expect an additional wait time. One of my friends arrived early to notify the host stand since the rest of us were traveling an hour to get there. She was told the wait would be about 30 minutes, which we thought was reasonable. However, we ended up waiting almost an hour and were then told they could not seat us together. The host informed me they would seat 5 at one table and 6 at another. Keep in mind, we had a 3:00 PM reservation for 6 and it was approaching 4:00 PM. Because it was my sister's birthday and she wanted to sit with her three friends, we adjusted ourselves and sat 7 at the table of 5. The remaining guests were called to the other side of the restaurant, even though there was an empty booth for 4 right beside us. A lady in our party spoke with the Black manager, who handled the situation beautifully. She personally cleaned off the booth and had their server move them over to sit near us. That level of leadership and customer care did not go unnoticed. Unfortunately, the hostess at the front seemed agitated, and one employee even stated out loud that it was almost time for her to go and she was ready, in a rude tone. No one in my party responded, and I chose not to either, but it was disappointing. Now let me shift the tone. Our server, Georgia (also known as Jordan), WAS AMAZING. Absolutely phenomenal. She turned the entire experience around. She created a custom drink for me, guided us through menu options we ended up loving, kept both tables clean, and never let our drinks go empty. She was attentive, kind, patient, and professional the entire time. She surprised my sister with ice cream and sang Happy Birthday, which meant so much. We were literally collecting tip money like we were at an auction because we wanted to bless her the way she blessed us. I am 41 years old, and she is hands down one of the best servers I have ever had. Despite the rocky start with the reservation and seating, Georgia made us forget every frustration. Because of her, we will absolutely be back--and we will be asking for her every single time. Thank you, Georgia aka Jordan. You made the night special.

The Sweet and the Absurd: A Birmingham Creamery's Baffling Economics…read moreTo step into Big Spoon Creamery in Birmingham is to subject oneself to a masterclass in both artisanal delight and bureaucratic absurdity. On my visits--a pilgrimage undertaken reliably every month and a half--the front-line staff have never been anything short of exemplary. They are the cheerful stewards of a deeply baffling system, executing their duties with a warmth that almost distracts you from the institutional quirks around them. I say "institutional" because the management themselves are entirely phantom. They are never seen on the floor. Perhaps this is a calculated evasion; if they were ever present, they would surely have to field a relentless, exasperated inquisition regarding the tragic and ongoing absence of their finest creation: the "Magic City." Why an ice cream parlor would willingly suppress its undisputed masterpiece remains an enduring mystery. Even if the economics of its ingredients demanded a premium surcharge, "Magic City" ought to be enshrined as an immovable staple on the menu. Instead, the menu is a restless, ever-shifting carousel. I concede that a relentless churn of novelty is a virtue to a certain type of customer, but the soul of a great neighborhood institution relies on the comforting reliability of a few anchor flavors. At Big Spoon, just as you develop an affection for a flavor, it vanishes into the ether. Then, we must examine the rewards program, an endeavor so poorly conceived it borders on the avant-garde. The mathematics are punishingly flat: one point per order, regardless of whether the patron spends a single dollar or one hundred. The rational response to such a broken incentive structure is, naturally, to weaponize the system. To extract any genuine value, the savvy customer is forced into a theatrical display of micro-transactions, paying for each scoop separately. It is a loophole that needlessly punishes the very staff who make the establishment shine, forcing them to run the register three or four times for a single family's dessert. Finally, there is the creamery's bizarre pricing taxonomy. A close study of the board reveals an accidental arbitrage opportunity: the customer is objectively better off purchasing two distinct pints of ice cream and two empty waffle cones to assemble on their own time, rather than engaging in the straightforward, intended transaction of ordering ice cream scooped directly into a cone. Whoever is pulling the levers behind the curtain at Big Spoon clearly fancies themselves a clever operator, disrupting the traditional ice cream parlor model with dynamic menus and gamified loyalty. But in their pursuit of perpetual novelty and labyrinthine economics, they have embodied the old proverb perfectly: they are entirely too clever by half.
