Pesto
Ranita S.

Pricey but so is everything else these days. Appetizers were great. I was excited about the French onion soup but the bread got too mushy while waiting for it to cool down. Maybe serve the bread on the side or cut it up smaller and toast until crouton consistency It arrived at the end of my meal not sure why. I wasn't told why either Chicken in Alfredo isn't freshly grilled Tasted like older unseasoned bits (they should improve this) especially if they're charging over $20 a dish Alfredo sauce was perfect. Pesto can get bitter if you don't use fresh basil or if you heat it. Adorable restaurant has potential either they should up the quality of meat or come down on the prices Our waitress was sweet and wasn't overwhelmed despite clearly being the only one there. Will try the pizza one day. We probably should have all ordered that. Didn't appreciate being seated so closely to other diners. My friends and I had lots of personal matters to discuss and our conversation got heated It was awkward being an elbow length apart from the only 2 parties there. Remove two tables and space the rest out for a more comfortable experience

Buffalo Chicken Stromboli

My husband and I came here during lunch on a weekday. There was maybe 1 or 2 other tables of customers, so we didn't have to wait to be seated. We chose to sit outside because it was a beautiful day! Our waitress took our drink and food order and we only saw her during our meal when she brought our food out. When we were finished, we had to go in and ask for a check. Now, usually I'd be more lenient here on the criticism if it had been more crowded, but we were one of only two total tables for our waitress. We ordered garlic knots for our appetizer which were great! It took about 30 minutes to get them though. For our entree, my husband ordered the Hawaiian pizza and I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Stromboli. My husband enjoyed his pizza well enough, but I had several issues with my Stromboli. 1st, there was VERY little chicken in it. I had to dig for it. 2nd, as shown in the pic, the cheese inside wasn't even melted. How can you burn the outside and not even melt the cheese inside? This tells me that either the cheese wasn't freshly grated OR that the oven temp is too high (or both). I was pretty disappointed. Not sure that I'll spend my money here again.

Update! In restaurant review! We showed up around 11:30am New Years Eve. They had the doors open on the 64 degree day right in front of the huge fountain with the smell of Italian suco cooking and spices wafting in the air. The music was absolutely perfect. The decor was that of a old time established place done gradually by the diy owner and had some character. It also had the feel of a walk in NYC Italian deli to the right with the gingham red table cloths. We were the only ones there the entire time, which is just wrong because the food was high quality! We ordered the meatballs as appetizer. They were minced and soft but firm also. Flavor was good and had breadcrumbs used in them as well. Overall they were very good. However, the sauce it came with reminded me if our family's homemade suco. So it felt so right. Not sweet and not bitter with not everything cooked down so it had some small chunks of tomato and onion remaining. Well spiced perfectly. Real homemade suco and you can tell! She had the chicken piccata which was spot on. However the meat was not pounded thin and although it was two thicker larger breast, the flavor penetrated well through which was shocking for how thick they were. Very tender and well seasoned. I had the lasagna, as a true staple test of a review. The cheese they use I love but is more on the greasy side. But the flavor and firmness was spot on. The meat was a little over seasoned with oregano but does not bother me. Others may find it too strong. I don't remember seeing or tasting any ricotta cheese as stated on the menu and that was disappointing because I love it in lasagna. It was very different than the lasagna upon my door dash order when I first reviewed it. We had to ask for bread after the meal came as I felt the suco would go to waste from the meatballs and my lasagna which is an Italian mortal sin. I made small suco sandwhichs with the rolls. Spot on! They over cooked the roles but they did not taste burned oddly. Had they been cooked less they would be 5 star with the the olive oil butter and garlic. I would suggest adding salt to them on top. Once settled in, the decor, the music, ah man the music was spot on! The sound of the water fountain with open doors really pulled the ambiance all together. Being the only two there was nice but it would also be different experience had it been more crowded. This place should be very busy based on the homemade food, quality ingredients and tastes of authentic Italian which is hard to find locally. It felt like the food was too good to not be much more crowded. The owner was there and very nice, as was the staff. They make their own bread and suco for sure. Overall, I cannot rate a 5 as I would need to try more menu items. Based on others reviews and our own experience it seems there may be consistency problems which is a telltale sign that much of it is homemade. (Thats a good sign.) But expect hit and miss when most of the items are home made and not premade. Overall this is an easy 4 star + but not a 5 star (yet.) I think if they get and stay busier it would force more consistency and improvement and they could easily become a long term staple in the area being highly sought after and successful. Well worth going if you want to try a new place. I was a little shocked at the $18 Stromboli and other costs on the menu but again, this is authentic homemade food and you can tell. It literally reminds me of my Nonna's as she was just as inconsistent due to item availability or just energy levels. I would assume even on a bad day the food would still be good. Absolutely will be one of my go to Italian places when in the area. Try it and experience a taste of real Italy.

Chicken picatta

Chicken Picatta was bland and had no color. Would not go here again. Other food was okay

Hubby and I dined here late on a Saturday evening. Served by the owner himself! A delicious appetizer of meatballs in marinara and bread. Then we split the Napoli salad and chicken parmigiana. Salad was a wonderful combination of tastes. Dressing great too. The chicken parm was fabulous....tender, juicy and just enough crispness. You could taste the sauce was homemade. Excellent Italian food and atmosphere. Will return on our next trip to Birmingham. If you live nearby, definitely check them out!!

Bruschetta

Still getting the restaurant up and fully running, but the inside is quaint. Service was a little slow as I believe the owner was doing multiple duties, host, server, busboy. He's really friendly. Food was really good. It's been a while since I've had good Bruschetta and the Shrimp Scampi was amazing. Will definitely be back to try a different dish.

This place is great! It doesn't look like much from the outside but the inside is super nice. The food is amazing. Everything is made from scratch. The service is also phenomenal. I would definitely recommend!

We had the oysters (the selection was unreal), the branzino, the tuna burger and the peas & carrots side dish. All incredible. But the real star of the show was the coconut cream pie. Truly, do not go to Bayonet without ordering it. Quite possibly our new favorite dessert in Bham. The tableside martini and coffee service were such a fun touch, and our waitress was amazing. She guided us through the oyster selection, and every variety we tried was fresh and tasty. The oysters were easily the highlight of the meal. The only downside was the exceptionally long wait between the oysters and our entrées. We ordered the snapper, tuna burger, and zucchini squash tart. All three dishes were well prepared and enjoyable, but none really stood out as particularly memorable. We finished with the coconut cream pie and a French press-like coffee, both of which were exceptional and a perfect ending to the meal. Overall, Bayonet was a good dining experience. The meal started and ended on a high note, and with improved pacing from the kitchen, it would have been a better experience.

For the love of God, don't believe the news articles and the James Beard nomination. This place is a ripoff. If it was ever good, it's gone downhill faster than a shopping buggy. The food is severely subpar and overpriced. The half lobster appeared to be a third lobster and cost as much as a whole lobster. I've had better hush puppies at a roadside barbecue joint. I've never had tiny "seared" scallops dumped into a half inch of beef broth before (how can they still be called seared when they're submerged?!?). Remarkably low quality cuisine. Please don't waste your money unless you're an unsophisticated rube. My cocktail was alright, but very small in volume compared to most other restaurants. The decorating appears dingy and the booth seats hurt your back. My wife said the bathroom had "trash everywhere." The waiter was very nice.

You need to have somewhere with the dessert stated on your menu. Second, the butternut squash that I got with my fish, should've been done a touch more. It was still good. It just needed to be done a touch more. 3. Please fix the handicapped bathroom. It didn't want to lock . Regardless, it was a wonderful meal!! Our server was pretty on point. She was friendly. We were seated promptly handed menus and about 30 seconds later approached by the waitress for drink orders. We asked for a drink menu as there was nothing to advertise what drinks they were serving. She returned with 1 drink menu for all 3 of us and stood there waiting until we decided. We asked for some time so she left and returned about 2 mins later. We ordered drinks and she returned 2 mins later to take our food order. We ordered appetizers, salad and main courses. The drinks came quickly, the salads came right after and then about 3 mins later, the appetizers came out. 3 mins after that, the main courses arrived so we had plates stacked everywhere on the table and quickly tried to finish our salads and appetizers before the main dish got cold. The waitress never returned to the table until she brought the bill. The plates were all cleared by someone else. We saw her leave a bill at the table next to us and wait until they checked it over and figured out a payment method, so when she arrived at our table we just handed her a credit card. The food was average but the overall experience was terrible. I realize she was probably new and this may have been her first night but some training would go a long way! For $180 dinner, we expected a lot more.

Phenomenal dining experience!!…read more Service was top notch from the hostess and host, our waiter and all of the runners. Attentive without being obnoxious, in depth explanations of items on the menu with great recommendations! We started with a half dozen raw oysters and the pork belly. Oysters were very fresh and the seasoned crackers were a nice touch. The pork belly was quite possibly the best we've ever had and we're slight snobs about it. The fennel and orange mixture was a unique blend that really complemented the smokiness of the pork belly, Our steaks were melt in your mouth good. Cooked perfectly! I wished I could've just taken a massive bowl of the macaroni and cheese home. The char on the broccolini balanced the richness of the macaroni. They were sadly out of the crème brûlée, so instead I had the vanilla and peach gelato, while my husband had the chocolate l'orange cake. The vanilla gelato had the perfect rich vanilla taste. The peach didn't taste much like peach, but the flavor was still good. The cake was light and fluffy with a great balance of chocolate and orange. The candied orange peel on top was a nice touch! The atmosphere is pretty busy so it was louder than I was expecting. It's spectacular every time. The rotating menu keeps things fresh and interesting, and every dish we've had has been thoughtfully prepared and consistently excellent. The kitchen is clearly doing something special and it's a big reason we keep coming back. This visit, however, the service was unusually slow. Our dinner lasted about two hours (7:30-9:30) on a night that didn't seem particularly busy. There was a noticeable lull in the dining room with quite a few open tables, yet it still took nearly 40 minutes between finishing our appetizers and receiving our main courses. The pacing just felt off compared to past visits. Valet (which I understand isn't directly run by the restaurant) was also a bit slow -- about a 15 minute wait to get our car at the end of the night. All that said, Armour House is still a really special spot with incredible food and we'll absolutely be back. Sharing this feedback because we've had such great experiences here before and hope this was just an off night.
