When I first moved to Billings this is the first place my family went and it was the last place we ate at when we left 2 years ago. It was always so so amazing and I miss it so bad. Part of why I got yelp was just to glaze this place. I always got the chicken fried rice. I never eat any chicken but fried but the chicken in this rice is extraordinary!! I then moved into udon noodles, and they're so soft and saucy and yummy. I feel very envious of anyone who can still go here. The service was always super good. Sometimes it would take a while for our food to come out, but it is a very popular place and waiting had never bothered me. The egg drop soup is amazing!!! This food was horrible - an unfortunate surprise based on our last experience. Orange S&S chicken - Awful. Minimal sauce over which assorted chicken pieces lay COATED TO BLOATED. Looked like deep-fat fried doughboys. Tasted like Indian fry bread Asian style, but in this case, missing the chicken. With bird flu going around, it was, I suppose, just as well. The texture was "gummy" and even tasted stale. But get this! Literally, one brocoli floret "decorated" each corner of the dinner plate. A pathetic attempt at presentation, but equal to the quality of the meal ~ Additionally, the General Tso's spicy beef dish was dry; the beef chunks and bits were tough and nearly tasteless. Where was the 'spice'? In fact, where was the flavor period? Fact: This dish arrived looking like something you'd put in your dog's bowl...if you didn't like your dog. A Huge disappointment. Finally, the long anticipated Hibachi "Grilled" vegetable dish showed up. What's this??? An unimpressive serving of mixed, SAUTEED veggies... 99% brocoli, 3 slices of zucchini, 2 small carrots and some mushrooms floated in a bowl over what can only be described as "juice." The price of this entree alone was $14.99. Hands down, this was the absolute worst Asian culinary experience I've had in Billings, or maybe anywhere else for that matter. I was a little nervous when we came in and the place was empty at 5pm on a Saturday night (literally empty, we were the only people here during our entire stay), but the food was pretty good! Here's the cons: -definitely overpriced, as many other people said. -The basil chicken and tofu was pretty good, the sauce was really oily though, towards the end of my meal there was a pool of oil on my plate. There was also VERY little protein, maybe 2oz of chicken and tofu. -the lemonade was horribly watered down. I tasted the pineapple Thai rice, drunken noodles and yaki Udon, as well as the spicy tuna and salmon sushi rolls. Kinda odd comment here, but we had the water to drink and it tasted bad, maybe old ice? It's not filtered for sure, definitely tap water, so that being the first thing on the table already is a bad start. Now you're thinking I'm petty, but wait! My pettiness doesn't end there! The service was marginal at best, the sushi came out first, 5 minutes later plates for the sushi, 3 minutes later... chop sticks... smh! The wasabi was oddly dry and powdery. I'd rate their sushi a bit above Albertsons but not by much. The udon noodles were pretty good. The drunken noodles needed more heat and the noodles themselves were rubbery. The Thai pineapple friend rice was made from fresh pineapple which is WAY better than some places in Billings... (Asian sea grill: really? Use real pineapple dudes!) but I didn't like the flavor too much, it had some kind of odd something in it that wasn't appealing to me, but we did eat it all so it couldn't have been that bad. At $8 for six crab "puffs" and $9 for potstickers (vs dumplings), I'd be better off purchasing frozen crab rangoon and Ling Ling frozen potstickers. The sauce served with the potstickers was sweeter than expected. We didn't even finish the $10 Cali roll since it was on the more room-temp side and not as fresh-tasting as most Cali rolls. While the inside of the business was clean, from the front door to the parking lot all the way to the garbage bins, there is a black stain, about 2 feet wide, due to the garbage from the kitchen being taken out the front. It was bland/tasteless with hardly any snow peas or zucchini (the only other veggie in the dish). I got the chicken chow fun. Wasn't really wowed when my husband and I came. There was one waiter. No busser. Apparently not much kitchen staff. Everything was really slow. And I mean no water, no food slow. This was our third time in Billings with Caravan Tours. We decided to try something new this time besides a chain or steakhouse. Tao New Asian was within a short walking distance from our hotel. Usually we are wary of Asian cuisine outside of New York or California but Tao did not disappoint. The serving sizes are individual not family sized but we were a party of 8 so we all had a bit of each other's meals. The pad thai was delicious as well as the Cantonese seafood pan fried noodles. The sweet and sour chicken tasted fantastic. The others in the party had other chicken dishes that they said were also good. The service was attentive for being what appeared short staffed. There only seemed to be a single server for the whole restaurant so it was a while before our appetizer plates were cleared before our main course although we did see another staff person in the restaurant. Would definitely recommend to the tour guide if anyone wanted to have something other than steak and American cuisine to definitely check out Tao. read more

I visited on a Saturday night around 7ish and the place was empty. They have a nice wine selection. I started with the Thai spring rolls with a peanut dipping sauce, they were tasty. I ordered the Kung Pao Scallops. The meal came with soup or salad and I had salad which was a green salad with spicy peanut dressing. Everything was very good. The scallops were cooked perfectly. Since moving to Billings I've been on the hunt for decent authentic pho. I decided to give this place a shot. It's nicely decorated, but maybe instead of spending money on appeal they could of used the money for the quality in their food. Was not pho by any means, the broth had no flavor and pho is known for the bone broth, which is strong in flavor. Also the cut of meat was completely wrong, it was the beef they use to sauté with broccoli for broccoli beef. So the meat I had was chewy and inedible. We ordered egg rolls, orange chicken, general tso's chicken, and drunken noodles. The eggs rolls are of the type with thin crisp wrappers, not the thick bubbly wraps. Our personal preference is for the thicker wrappings but we can't fault them for that. However, we can fault them for being under-cooked and doughy on the inside with the flavor lacking any notable quality. Both the orange chicken and general tso chicken tasted as though they were made using the same base sauce, with the addition of whatever ingredient makes up the ordered dish. (i.e. The orange chicken had bits of orange peel added and the general tso had the tiniest bit of spice added.) The chicken was chokingly dry and a bit over-breaded. Our least favorite dish, but the most enjoyed flavor, came with the drunken noodles. The flavor was quite good, if a little basil heavy at times, and the spice was spot on. The meat (chicken, pork, beef) was plentiful and very well cooked. The only downside, and it was a huge one, was the overcooking of the noodles. They were so mushy they broke when lifted and became a paste in your mouth. Quite unfortunate because, other than that, it would be a recommendable dish. Based on our experience, we wouldn't recommend this restaurant. However, their other dishes may be much better; we'll never know. read more

I've been here 3 times in 5 day's & I should have just eaten here each meal because no other restaurants in Billings has as excellent & presentable food as this gem. The employees here are very knowledgeable. I have had the yushang, Chinese ribeye & another dish I can't recall. All have rich sauces & fresh & crisp vegetables. Yummmm! I'm such a fan of Tao - delicious AND affordable. I went with a friend for lunch and ordered the Cashew Chicken. The lunch specials are an awesome deal! I got a large portion and a salad for a little under $8 - seriously a great bargain. Our waiter was very professional, attentive, and accommodating, the perfect combination. I just have a couple of teeny tiny complaints: -My Cashew Chicken was delicious, but did not have any cashews in it, which was a little silly. It was still really good, but the cashews are the best part! -Also, almost every section of the menu says "no substitutions" or something to that affect, so it could be tricky to accommodate special dietary needs On a positive note, the atmosphere is so beautiful!
