We came with the whole family, everyone left completely stuffed, and somehow we still walked back to the hotel carrying leftovers from basically every dish. We were only in Long Beach for one night staying at the Fairmont Breakers and walked over here for dinner. We know Long Beach has seriously good Thai food, so there was no way we were spending our one night in town eating something we could get anywhere. Very glad we picked Thai District. What shocked me wasn't just that the portions were huge. A lot of restaurants make a plate look enormous by burying you in rice or noodles. Not here. They were extremely generous with the actual meat, shrimp, vegetables, herbs, nuts, everything. I kept looking at the plates wondering how they were doing this. The Yum Woon Sen / glass noodle salad was ON POINT. Huge plate of noodles, vegetables, herbs, chicken, and what seemed like an endless supply of large perfectly cooked shrimp. Great balance of acidity, spice, freshness, and that slippery glass noodle texture. Then came the Nam Khao Tod Salad, definitely their own interpretation. Traditional nam khao usually has crispy fried rice balls broken apart and mixed throughout. Here it was almost the reverse: a HUGE amount of seasoned minced chicken almost reminiscent of larb gai, fresh herbs, vegetables, peanuts, and crispy puffed rice over the top. I still prefer the more traditional version with chunks of fried crispy rice, BUT this was legitimately delicious in its own way. I found myself eating half the plate while trying to convince my brain we were still calling it nam khao. The herbs and flavor were there, the peanuts gave it great crunch, and the amount of meat was ridiculous. The surprise winner for our daughter was the beef Pad See Ew. This girl had THREE PLATES. She kept asking what kind of noodles they were, why they tasted like that, what the sauce was, and about a million other questions. Eventually she announced she wanted to eat those noodles for the rest of her life. The wide rice noodles had that chewy texture you want, plenty of beef and Chinese broccoli, and they weren't drowning in sauce. Our son normally has a harder time at Thai restaurants because the spice and herbs can be a little much for him. The wonton soup finally gave us a win. The "small" was actually a substantial bowl with a LOT of really good meat-filled wontons, plenty of bok choy, green onion, and a comforting savory broth. He actually ate dinner successfully at a Thai restaurant for once. We also got the crispy tofu, which came out as big cubes with a peanut dipping sauce. Again, generous portion. They apparently do not understand the concept of putting six tiny pieces of something on a plate and charging $15 for it, and I appreciate them for that. Dessert was their Mango & Sticky Rice, and even this had their own twist. Purple coconut sweet sticky rice that reminded us of Korean purple rice, huge chunks of ripe mango, mango sorbet in the middle, and chewy sala palm seeds with an almost gummy, jelly-like texture. Then the whole thing gets drenched in sweet coconut cream. My wife and kids demolished it. And after ALL OF THAT, plus a Singha beer, jasmine rice, sticky rice, etc., our subtotal was basically $100+ for four people. Look at these portions. $100. In Downtown Long Beach. In 2026. I don't understand it either. Service deserves some love too. The staff was extremely nice and accommodating even though we showed up with two kids and immediately became that family. We initially sat at a normal four-person table, but apparently my children are traitors and will only sit next to their mother, so we asked to move somewhere with a bench where a 3-to-1 seating arrangement made more sense. No problem at all. Then I was sweating because I'm fat and apparently walking several blocks before eating Thai food was my personal Everest, so they even turned up the AC and moved us into the other section. Sorry guys, and thank you. The atmosphere deserves a mention too. The restaurant had this cozy, dimly lit, almost romantic feel without being overly fancy. It was peaceful and zen inside, especially for Downtown Long Beach. Soft lighting, comfortable seating, and a quieter vibe made it easy to relax and enjoy dinner. Seriously though, we had a great experience. Huge portions, tons of meat and seafood, excellent Pad See Ew, great Yum Woon Sen, a creative Nam Khao Tod, kid-friendly options, wonderful service, and some of the best value we've seen at a sit-down restaurant in a long time. We walked over from the Fairmont Breakers for our one night in Long Beach specifically wanting good Thai food. Mission accomplished. Truly this was the BEST Thai food we have ever tasted. Every single dish was better than the last one. Every thing was seasoned just right. From the fresh and crisp Spring rolls to the Spicy dumplings, and the our delectable, savory Pad Thai. Our Drunken Noodle dish, we ordered mild in spice level, but was mouth watering and delightful! We mentioned it to our friends, who were also here for the same convention, one couple ordered Door Dash the other 5 tried it and every single one of them were not dissatisfied. Who tried these chairs out before buying them, a tweensy elfin person? And I saw several ppl squirming in their chairs like I was so it wasn't just my big butt either. Ha ha ha ha ha ha. But back to the food...my goodness the flavors were so spot on and well sauced everything...deep umami and layered depth of flavor because, this chef knows what they are doing back there. WOW! All of these have never failed to bring out the "oohs," "ahhs," and "yums" from us! Other solid choices include pad thai, pineapple fried rice, boat noodles, thai crispy garlic chicken with orange sauce, and thai bbq chicken. Yes, we've eaten here a lot and have introduced it to a number of people! The service is very fast at Elephant Thai, and the menu has switched to digital since the pandemic. Just a container full of overcooked noodles, four small pieces of pork, some green onion, and a very small amount of some really strange sauce that had no peanut taste to it at all... not to mention no real additional peanut pieces or garnish. A rip off. Won't order from here again... Pork Pad Thai is one of my favorite dishes and this was one of the worst I've ever tasted... ever.
