Was in a mood for sushi the other day while on a business trip and Narita was down the road from my hotel. To my surprise it was absolutely delicious. Got a sweet potato roll, Salmon roll and a Narita roll with chicken fried rice. The Sweet Potato and Narita are on par with the best I've ever had. The chicken fried rice had a particular taste to it, good but different! This place used to be a Gem , but these dayz the service is terrible and the food is just so so ! We had to ask for a refill after about an hour sitting with no drinks. And then when the food finally came out it all came at different times. Let me be very transparent and up front. Based on the exterior, and the ambiance of the inside I was very nervous. Low traffic, dark interior almost feeling like I wasn't supposed to be in there. However, I did my usual routine of ordering the Eel Nigiri (great indicator of how old the fish is, as it tastes fishy rather quicky). It was excellent! Ordered in total about 4 rolls. All of which were very good. This being compared to my baseline of San Diego sushi. It held its own. I will be back, and if they brighten the place up a little and clear the clutter. This has always been our favorite sushi place. Since the new owner has come in, maybe a couple years now, not sure, the place has slowly started to go down hill. We always noticed one of the booths were reserved just for the owner it seemed. He would sit over in the booth, reading a paper, eating, etc. well what we saw last night may cause us to never go back. First off there was a baby bassinet set up outside that booth! (See photo) Maybe there was no one to watch the baby, but that's very unprofessional. Next, they now have a freaking VENDING MACHINE set up outside the restaurant on the front sidewalk!! A vending machine! Are you serious!!!? Is he hurting for money that bad!? I also noticed that they only had one cooler full of fish, etc at the sushi bar. Apparently they aren't selling as much as they used to. It is a shame because their sushi chefs are awesome and do beautiful and deliciouspresentations. Wondering why the floor is solid granite throughout -- easier to hose it down? Craving sushi after a long day of travel, and I happened to be staying next door to Narita. Once again, I ignored the Yelp reviews and gave it a shot. I was expecting lousy service, and instead got pretty good service. My problem was with the prices and the food. The sushi was expensive, and it really wasn't that great. I don't remember all the names, but the roll with the cilantro and and jalapeno was the best of the bunch, but it wasn't in the $11.50 range. The eel and avocado roll was average and relatively small (not much eel). I ordered the blossom roll, because I love good scallop rolls, and in typical fashion, they were out of scallop. He offered white tuna instead, and it didn't really matter, because this roll was bland. The house salad has decent flavor, but it was very watery. The killer was the sake. My waitress recommended a medium, yeasty sake (never can get the names of sake) in a green bottle and was $10.25 for a small. Stay away! It was yeasty, milky, grainy, and tasted of bananas. It was awful! I really had a hard time drinking it. I'm starting to get tough on reviews for sushi. My recent trip to the west coast opened my eyes to the true potential of real sushi, and places like this just don't hold up. Great sushi restaurant. Great combinations at a lower cost than many sushi houses. Great ownership and employees. They don't have the typical Japanese Steakhouse fryers where you get food and a show, but they can make the steakhouse menu. Come here for the sushi, its worth the time and money. Try the Playboy or Scotty rolls, they put them in foil and set them on fire. They have a decent bar to sit at with very comfy chairs, but there's only nine seats. They have two group rooms that I've rarely seen anyone use. This is a hidden gem, the west side of Indy is still a bit in the dark on sushi. read more

An established Japanese eatery in Plainfield that needs a little help. The food itself needs little help, considering what's expected in the middle of Indiana. However, the rest of what sits in this location could do with a makeover. The restaurants' exterior isn't necessarily cheery. It's interior is a little dark and dank, with warped ceiling tiles. It's difficult to hang a low star on any business. It's easy to see Narita gives a valiant effort. They just don't have enough help to provide good service. Lunch was at 11:45. 3 seated tables in the house. Had to search for someone to seat me. Ordered in 5 minutes, had miso soup and salad with in 10 after being seated. Ok, things are looking up. Chose the Tonkatsu. 4 stars for the simple meal. Miso exhibited good flavor with tiny chunks of tofu and wandering nori. Slightly watery salad and a tasty dressing which had nuances of soy, and ginger. Very good actually. Tonkatsu is a method of tenderizing the protein, breading and flash frying. It's traditionally served with a savory, sweet sauce to dip. The pork was crispy, tender, moist and served with perfectly steamed rice. Dip in the sauce, dab the pork on the rice and chow. Then the let down. 3 more tables charged in, 1 server. Waited 15 minutes for the server to bring the check. Didn't happen, had to track her down. Finally to pay, but wait... she forgot to hand me back my credit card and I had to track her again. Sheesh! Good food, careless service. read more

Reviews for this place have been mixed, and my last couple of visits show why the one and two star ratings! Portions were decidedly smaller, and sashimi was not soft and smooth and delicious. It was almost like it had been injected with plastic! What had felt like a bargain, worth eating here despite the limited choices, well, not if you have time to drive to a better rated place, especially if you like raw fish, raw fish, and more raw fish. Here's what I said before: Good selection of sushi and sashimi, with generous portions (we're not paying for fancy real estate here!). Only about 1 or 2 minutes off I 70, but due to a "no left turn," it's 10 - 15 minutes to get back to the highway. Service speed has varied significantly. To-go orders really slow down a fairly empty restaurant, but so ask if you're in a hurry! OTOH, service has sometimes been quite quick, and the waitress remembered our preferences on a return trips. We would never have eaten here if we'd stopped at the bathroom on the way in. Facilities have a funky smell, perhaps sewer, perhaps just mop water that gets re-used and re-used for days. Not good. Light switch is permanently stained, but looks filthy. Water faucet caked with lime-scale. Mirror splattered and streaked. None of this makes the food (or even toilets) unsanitary, but the restrooms resemble a gas station, not a nice restaurant! Strongly recommend someone do a little scrubbing and spend the few bucks that new fixtures would cost. read more

Decided to give this place a try since it's one of the only sushi places in Plainfield. Walked in, it was clean, but we weren't greeted for about 5 minutes, who ended up being our server. Finally got sat, only 2 tables in the restaurant including us. They have a bar, so I asked to see a drink menu to see if they had apple saki, and he said "we arent serving alcohol" ... why would you not be selling alcohol if you have a bar? It was 5 pm. Okay, so I ordered water. Didnt get one refill the entire time (wasnt empty until half way through our sushi) and server was no where to be found. When he was eventually found, a third table walked in and he completely ignored us for them. Even after our meal, we had our dishes stacked neat at the end of the table, made eye contact with him, he saw our table, and he didnt come back by for about 10 minutes, where he went to his other new table first. Overall, service was pretty awful, but the sushi is actually pretty good. I dont think I will ever dine in again, but may try to put in a carry out order in the future. read more

The person who greeted us in the entrance wasn't very friendly, but our waitress was attentive and friendly. I was quite disappointed with the entrees we chose, the habachi new york strip and the yakisoba. Both were kind of bland, and the new york strip was chewy and dry. I also assumed since it said "habachi" that they would cook in front of you, but they have no hibachi grills/tables for customers to watch them cook. The reason I gave this place 3 stars instead of 2, is that the narita roll was pretty delicious. Amazing sushi! Their spring rolls are excellent as well. Overall, the food was great. They could work on a couple things: 1. They need to work on their initial presentation at the door. Right inside the front door it looks very bare, almost neglected. The entire front area, from the entrance to the short hall leading to the main eating area smells like dead fish - not very reassuring at all when you're planning to have sushi. Once you're inside the restaurant the atmosphere is great - the place looks amazing! 2. Service time - Even though the restaurant appeared to be fully staffed, it took forever to get any service. Do not come at peak times. They can't handle it and your service will be horrendous. This is our favorite Indy sushi place. We are regulars here and the staff knows us. But every single we deviate from our usual time of coming (right at opening or for lunch) we have bad service. Mary is the best server. Helly is super sweet, but she spends too much time trying to talk to us. She is trying hard to be nice...but sometimes she interrupts conversations. I think it's because we come in so frequently. Food is great. I've enjoyed everything I've tried sushi wise! If you can figure out when they get shipments you can ensure you are getting the freshest fish possible. One of the few sushi places in town that actually serves alcoholic beverages! This little place is conveniently located just off I-70 right between Plainfield and Mooresville. It's never overly crowded the wait staff is friendly the place is well decorated and clean. I honestly have nothing at all bad to say about the food! This is not a hibachi steakhouse, but they do offer hibachi. Which, in addition to the sushi, is also delicious. For my Mooresville crowd - this is a more upscale option than A1 & perfect for a date night or girls night out! I will say this as a negative - there is defiantly a awful smell coming from their sewer. I'm not sure it's the establishments fault or not. It might be the grease trap (?) But it's unsettling on your stomach - so if you can avoid the facilities - do so! It's really too bad, because otherwise the place is a little gem. read more
