I had an amazing first time experience at Naschmarkt. I made a reservation via Opentable about an hour before and got a nice seat outside. Our server, Juan, was the best, a true pro, serving us great recommendations. He even split our appetizers and soup for us in separate plates/bowls (which is something I've never had done before)! The sweet corn soup (with the crème fresh and pepper) was one of the best soups I've ever had, and the spatzle was full of flavor with the chicken. My girlfriend had the braised game hen and she loved it, to me it tasted like Filipino adobo. I had the Pan roasted halibut and it was tasty, but I don't think worth $38. But the rest of the dishes made up for it. For dessert, we had to get what everyone around us was trying: the salzburger nockerl, a wonderfully sweet soufflé with their ice cream that was just an excellent pairing. But 2 tiny pieces of scallops for $28?! - Spatzle starter: one of the favorites. It was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. It was also a decent portion to share. - Beef Stroganoff: delicious. So glad to get back out to restaurants post shelter in place. Naschmarkt did a nice job of setting up outside, though being so close to the busy sidewalk and people walking around isn't super great for being 6' away from others. Service was really attentive and knowledgeable. The food was great, super tasty, great attention even on the basics. As an example, the potato salad which could just be a throw in side, had perfectly cooked tender potatoes with a nice bite of acid from the pickles and not overly mayonnaisey. The sweet corn soup was really fantastic with amazing corn flavor. The pretzel was admittedly so-so, about the only thing we had all night that wasn't great. The smoked brat was probably one of the best I've ever had. Super tender, flavorful and paired with really well cooked caramelized onions and sauerkraut. Again, those are usually throw-aways, but there was serious care and cooking that went into it. I always get the schnitzel and it doesn't disappoint. My boyfriend and I sat at the bar, we had great service by the bartender, who usually works at a different location. I like the fact that is was an small & intimate restaurant. 4 star service, 3.5 star food. Had a Sunday reservation for Valentine's Day celebration. Since our friend had an emergency, we had to bring their son along and it became a party of 4 dining event. The host was very friendly and kind to let us make the change last minute. We were also well taken care of by Bob who shared our experience of having 2 boys. During dinner, one kid dropped the bread plate and one spilled a whole cup of water. The clean up was very quick and unnoticed, thumbs up. We tried the mussel for appetizer and it was very good! The sauce was excellent and the kids were dipping their bread to get extra helpings. For entrees, we tried "fresh Tagliatelle Pasta with braised pancetta, caramelized broccolini, soft egg, kale cream & ricotta salata" for the kid, "Jäger Schnitzel; pork schnitzel braised in a mushroom cream sauce with spätzle, garlic confit and broccolini" and "Kraut Rouladen; beef, pork and smoked bacon filled Savoy cabbage with creamy butternut squash, sautéed rainbow chard, mushroom demiglace, pomegranate seeds". The pasta sauce was sweet and creamy, loads of mushroom and broccolini. The schnitzel and kraut rouladen were both too salty to our likings, the Spätzle side dish was good and is easily another kid's favorite. For drinks, we tried the rasberry soda from Austria, a German sweet Riesling and Austrian Maultier cocktail. They are all good. To wrap up the night, we also ordered the popular "Salzburger nockerl." I didn't get to try the ice cream as the kid got it all so quickly, the souffle itself was surprisingly soft, light and airy. The texture is excellent! I would only push it a bit and say that it feels a bit too sweet for me. Exceptional service, and again, a bit too salty on our entrees and a bit too sweet for the dessert, hence 3.5 star for food. OMG! I'm so glad I found this place. I got an email from Open Table listing the top 10 restaurants in the San Jose/Silicon Valley area. This was #1 on the list, so I tried it. I was NOT disappointed. The restaurant is small and intimate. The staff was phenomenal - from the greeter all the way down to busboy. On to the food. We started with the Austrian Cold Cuts appetizer. This AMAZING platter consisted of prosciutto, salami, smoked trout on a bed of sour cream/horseradish sauce, chicken liver mousse, a spicy cheese spread (liptauer), pickled veggies, a huge pretzel, a slice of crunchy bread, raw horseradish and spicy mustard. So neither of us touched the raw horseradish and we both agreed that the mousse was a little sweeter than we were expecting. Everything else was superb. This platter was $20, which to me is a great deal for what you get. However, my dinner mate made a point of stating that it probably only cost them $5.00 for the platter. I disagree. For my entrée, I ordered the Jager Schnitzel which is a flattened piece of pork braised in a mushroom cream sauce with spätzle, garlic confit and broccolini. Every single bite was absolutely delicious. I chose the right entrée. She ordered the pork belly dish. Which is basically fat on top of fat. The presentation was lovely and the one bite I had was smooth and tasty. The only negative about this place is parking. We had to circle the block a few times, but eventually we got a legal parking spot. Here's What I Think... I think that if you're interested in good food and a nice experience, check this place out. We ordered the price fixe online for takeout. I called first to confirm that we had to have the same appetizer and entree, which was disappointing. Even more disappointing is that someone who just posted a review was able to get different ones for each person. The spaetzel is great. Highly recommend. The hen was salty but cooked well and the risotto very good. The chocolate dessert was so-so. It comes with a sorbet that melted in the ten minutes it took to get home. Had heard good things about Naschmarkt and decided to detour off 280 on our way home from a long road trip. Lucky to walk-in and get good seats at the bar where we could watch the open kitchen and see the staff interact. While the restaurant is pretty and appears clean, there was a major service disconnect best described as, "they just don't care." If I had to guess, I would say the owner isn't present and the "inmates are running the asylum." If the food was amazing, it wouldn't really matter. Unfortunately, the food just wasn't special enough to make up for all the negatives. Robotic welcome spiel, hot food consistently served on cold plates (this is so dumb!), wait staff surprising you from behind loudly asking, "you're done with this, RIGHT?," water never refilled, and staff eating and drinking at the other end of the bar (so, so odd). My wife suggested Naschmarkt as the perfect place to celebrate our anniversary after her brother took her there for lunch. I now know why. We had a reservation for 5:30 pm and were seated promptly at an inside table. The restaurant is beautifully designed. The seating is comfortable, the dinnerware is tasteful and the staff are attentive without being intrusive. We ordered cocktails and a cheese pretzel to start as we assessed our choices from their well thought out menu. We chose to share their butter leaf salad. For our entrees I chose Pork Belly and my wife chose Jager Schnitzel. Service timing was exceptional. Our selection were presented in a timely manner by our charming waiter. The food was DELICIOUS! We savored every bite. When we were almost finished with our meal, I believe he was the owner, checked on us and asked if everything was to our liking. We mentioned it was the perfect setting for us to celebrate our Anniversary and assured him we would be back. Shortly afterwards we were presented with a delicious Apple Strudel on the house. Our food was delicious from the pretzel appetizer (definitely get the beer cheese) to the bed goulash (ask for more of the red peppers as this really adds to the dish). We made reservations for Naschmarkt two weeks in advance for our Valentine's dinner (late review I know). The ambiance is very datey and service was impeccable. Overall the meal was very positive and food was delicious! The one small complaint we have was with the heater, which was directly overhead our table and had only one setting (very hot). This issue only came up in the patio so try to make your reservations in the main dining room if you can. We ordered the spatzle as an appetizer, and the pork belly and monkfish for our entrees. This was my first time trying spatzle, kinda reminded me of gnocchi. The bacon gave the dish great flavor as well. The monkfish with the sides (especially the pumpkin).was amazing, although by itself it was rather underwhelming. Pork belly was the clear winner out of the two entrees - so incredibly tender that we barely used the knife. I would definitely order this again. For dessert we opted for the soufflé with vanilla ice cream. While still delicious, we couldn't help noticing that the inside was undercooked. Soufflé is very difficult to make so I wasnt too upset (especially since the ice cream was great), but I'd probably order the apple strudel instead. A year ago, Naschmarkt was supposed to be my 1st date location but we were unable to go. A year later and a engagement later, this is where I choose for us to have our anniversary dinner. I'm normally not fancy schmancy guy but BLUF, we had an amazing experience and I highly recommend Naschmarkt when your appetite craves Austrian food. The service was top notch for us even though we did not do a reservation. We were seated at the bar top with a great view of the kitchen. Unsure of the menu items, our server Juan walked us through it all. I dropped my napkin and Juan replaced it immediately. Embarrassingly my butter fingers dropped it again and I tried to quickly pick it up. Juan brought me a new one and said, "I saw that." Just shows how much they are paying attention to the customer. Now the food, yes it is pricy but you are really paying for the quality. Not only was everything delicious but quantity is a quality!!! We left stuffed. I had the Jager Schnitzel and it was fantastic. Top it off with an A+ for presentation. The Sausage Trio with the beers was on point. I'm salivating thinking about the meal we had. I definitely recommend Naschmarkt for all occasions. You and your dinner date will not be disappointed and will leave very satisfied with your experience. It's Tuesday so I was listening to another installment of Second Date Update on Star 101.3 this morning on my way to work. A guy calls in because his date ghosted on him. The radio hosts call the girl to ask why. First, he was 20 minutes late. Then, for dinner he brought her to Taco Bravo in Campbell (late night fast food joint equivalent to Taco Bell) and bought her a taco...A taco! Afterwards, when they went to the movies, she had to pay for her own ticket. *SMH* That's just wrong. IF you're going to bring a girl to some drunchies spot on a first date...it should be dinner #2 at 2 am and at least spring for a "super" taco, ya cheapskate! Campbell is such a cute area so its mind boggling that he couldn't find a more appropriate [sit-down] place for a first date. Which brings me to Naschmarkt Restaurant, an Austrian restaurant. After listening to Second Date Update this morning, it reminded me that I never wrote a review for this perfect date spot. Granted, it's not really a first date spot as it's pretty pricey (~$80 pp for 3 course meal + 1 alcoholic drink) but if you want to seal the deal and really impress a girl (or guy), this is the place to do it at Campbell. Do make reservations ahead of time...at least a week in advance if you don't want to eat at 5 pm. Take advantage of the full bar, and order a cocktail while perusing the menu. I had the Austrian Maultier: Purity gluten-free vodka, ginger beer, elderflower, lime juice, thyme ($12): http://bit.ly/2tgNDWB which is their take on a Moscow Mule. It was refreshing, floral, and lightly citrusy. For apps, we shared the Smoked Pork Bratwurst w/ braised sauerkraut, caramelized onions, dijon mustard ($12): http://bit.ly/2sXvYBb which they kindly split in half since we were sharing. Twelve dollars for one sausage is expensive but it was darn good - super juicy and flavorful with the caramelized onions, sauerkraut, and mustard adding a touch of sweetness and punch of acid for balance. I've had this restaurant bookmarked for years for their Double-Cooked Pork Belly w/ carrot purée, sautéed red cabbage, roasted oyster mushrooms, red wine sauce ($32) so that's what I ordered for my main: http://bit.ly/2rXVAN7. The pork belly was lush and meltingly tender but I wish the skin was crisper. I scanned through pics and other pork belly had a crackly crispy skin. Don't get me wrong, it was good but not worth $32 for a small palm sized portion. For my side, I ordered the Quark Spätzle (Side - $6): http://bit.ly/2sNgfGs. It was mushy and bland. My friend ordered the Jäger Schnitzel: Braised pork cutlet, mushroom cream sauce, garlic confit, broccolini, spätzle ($28): http://bit.ly/2sNgv8o. I had a bite and it was good. The pork cutlet was moist and tender, and the mushroom sauce was deliciously rich, creamy, and savory. For dessert we ordered the Apfel Strudel: Apple Strudel w/ vanilla bean ice cream, whipped cream ($9) and the Salzburger Nockerl: Vanilla soufflé, blueberry compote, greek yoghurt ice cream ($10): http://bit.ly/2tj8vgM. Skip the apple strudel unless you like a bunch of mushy apples...there wasn't enough flaky pastry for texture. But, that soufflé is what soufflé dreams are made of. It was like biting into a cloud - super light and airy. The sweet berry compote and tart yogurt ice cream made for an amazing trifecta. One of the best souffles I've had next to Gary Danko's and La Folie's. Service was polished. Our server was cordial and was there when we needed him (for a refill or second cocktail). Timing of courses were on point and there was never a long lag between courses. We sat outside in their enclosed outdoor patio with Tater Tot which was great for people watching (sorry, no pics as he was sleeping under the table). The dining room area is small and cozy so no wonder it's hard to get reservations. Dining solo? No problem...sit at their chef's counter. Since we had early reservations, parking wasn't an issue but I can imagine it being more challenging after 6 pm. Not everything blew us away at Naschmarkt Restaurant but for Campbell, it's solid and some dishes were close to the caliber of great San Francisco restaurants. And, if your wallet allows, a much better option than Taco Bravo. Save that for 2 am or after you get the cookie (a la "Think Like A Man"). We've wanted to come here ever since we went to Nasch Bistro in Los Gatos right before it permanently closed several years ago. Sad to say our experience at Naschmarkt was highly disappointing. We came in for a belated birthday meal and also wanted to celebrate some other milestones in our lives. I wish we had gone elsewhere. The good: the food was pretty solid. We ordered the sausage trio, arctic char, and jaeger schnitzel. - My German husband thought the sausage trio was good but not great, saying specifically one of sausages - I think it was the sausage of the day - lacked flavor. - I was pleasantly surprised with the arctic char, which came with raspberries as well as a pea puree that was incredibly flavorful. I'm a pretty simple gal, so this is one of the more adventurous dishes I've tried, and it did not disappoint. - The jaeger schnitzel was not breaded, which I don't think is traditional but probably the better choice if you're gonna douse it in gravy anyway. It comes with a side of spaetzle. We had lots of leftovers. - Because we were celebrating a birthday, we were offered a sorbet trio with a birthday candle on the house. We liked the lemon and berry flavors but did not enjoy the mango. - To complement your meal, the bottled German beer selection is very good, if that's your thing. The bad: I'm not the type of person to give a restaurant grief for service especially during these times, and we still tipped as much as we normally do, but we left our meal feeling entirely unwelcome at this restaurant. Our server was very cold towards us. While we asked little from him (we had no questions about the menu and no special requests), it seemed like everything we did annoyed him. - The tables outside for two were very small, so at one point our bread plates had to be moved out of the way to make room for appetizer plates. My husband tried to move his bread plate and water glass to help make room for the server, but the server snapped "which side do you want it?" at him. At this point, my husband already felt incredibly uncomfortable as if he had done something wrong. - The bottled beers we ordered were poured before us to the point they overflowed and spilled onto the table - this compounded this feeling like we were being punished for doing something wrong. My husband's 0.5L beer was served in a 0.3L glass, which means the glass couldn't fit the whole beer to begin with... which made the overpouring feel especially punitive. - At one point after we ordered drinks and our appetizer, a much nicer female server came by to check on us and we got confused as to who we should be ordering with. We put in an order for mains with her since she was there. Even though we had been told minutes before by the earlier server there was an option of beef stroganoff that evening, they had already sold out. My husband had to change his entree pick at the last minute. The stroganoff selling out so quickly was a little odd because the restaurant opens at 5, and we were there within the first 2 hours of opening. - It wasn't until towards the end of the meal that our original server uttered "happy birthday man" a few times to my husband. This was so ridiculous it bordered on comical. Seeing the other reviews, I feel like our server might've had an off day and our experience was an outlier. Once we left, my husband joked that the service was pretty authentically German (IYKYK). We almost never have poor experiences dining out as we are pretty easygoing grab-your-own-condiments, bus-your-own-table, refill-your-own-glass people. However, with the way our server made us feel, we had a downright awful dinner and will probably not come back. read more

For main we had the gulash and the duck pot pie. The gulash is as good as the one I had in Vienna, the duck pot pie was good although the crust was sweet which was a bit strange to my taste buds. For dessert we had 3 types of desserts and all were amazing, the strudel is the top winner. I also had the Aviation cocktail which was yummy. My wife and I have eaten at Naschmarkt over 5+ times over the years and enjoyed the food every single time. However, tonight deserves special recognition for not just the quality of the food (which is always top notch) but most importantly the quality of the staff. We came in with our two year old daughter who was in a fussy mood all day, and not only did they take it in stride, they cheered her up and recommended a few dishes that got her eating and very happy. The herbed spätzle and pickled peppers take the dish to the next level. A must try!!! Dessert: Apple strudel (5/5) + soufflé (3/5) You have to finish your meal off with the apple strudel. It is so soft and rich. The soufflé was average and we would definitely stick to the apple strudel next time.
