I'm from the northeast so I have very specific tastes when it come to bagels. I went in with low expectations (I'm sorry! When it comes to pizza & bagels I will freely admit I'm a snob). But these bagels were fantastic! Plus, bonus for pork roll (although I don't think I know anyone from NJ who puts ketchup on a pork roll, egg & cheese). I love the way Nates bagels has embraced the new covid rules. All orders have to be ordered online, and you wait outside until your number is called. The guy who handed out the orders was certainly getting his steps in running in and out of the storefront picking up orders. We went to Nate's because my husband is from NJ and 1. Is a sucker for a good bagel and 2. Was craving Taylor ham or pork roll what we you would like it call it. The place is small and they do a lot of online ordering but they were surprisingly quick given the amount of orders they had ready and the amount of people going in and out. There is street parking only which I think can be challenging to find a spot close but not impossible. Overall my husband loved it and I have no doubt we will be back again. My family and I all good our sandwiches (Lox, Mox, and Country Cuban) on Everything Bagel and it seemed that there was a little of "everything" on it. When I got there there were a bunch of people waiting around outside but everyone was considerate and wore masks and stayed apart from one another. I lived in NYC for years and honestly I don't even know if the bagels here are my style or not but I don't even care lol I come here just about every week for bagels to make my own bagel sandwiches at home and Nate's bagels steps up my game a notch. Best New York style bagel in the area. We love the Rosemary sea salt bagel with the hot honey cream cheese. The hot honey cream cheese has a hint of heat but it's not overpowering. To start off, the bagels were delicious and very filling. I tried the Ol Virginny and the Lox w/ the Works. The Ol Virginny comes with a sausage patty, egg, tomato jam, onions and cream cheese. I added a topping of bacon which was $1.5 but sadly, they forgot it. The bagel worked together and it would be good if you were in the mood for something heavier. The tomato jam was surprisingly sweet and at times it overpowered a little. I think it probably brings a balance to the sausage patty. The Lox bagel is basically what you expect from it. They did not skimp on the salmon and there was a lot of cream cheese. The bagel was a bit hard, I'm guessing they refrigerated it beforehand. I got all the bagels toasted but it was still soft. I think double toasted could have been okay. I will say I don't think I could taste the difference between the types of bagels. I got poppy seed for one and onion bagel for the other. Maybe it's just a texture thing. I ordered online which was a mess at first. They took off the ordering for some time (possibly to update what bagels were left?). I tried calling the number multiple times but no one ever answered. After I checked the website again after 30 mins, it was back up and I was able to order. The wait time was ONE HOUR from when I ordered at 12 pm. When I came, it was a quick pick up and the orders were ready inside & all you need is your confirmation #. The only reason I deducted a star was after all that waiting, I felt like they should've remembered my add on. I visited Nate's in July (had only been in the area for a month). I was very surprised at the line out of the door; which was a good sign of "yep, this is going to be an amazing palate experience". I was right. My bacon, egg, cheese with cream cheese everything bagel was screaming delicious. I wolfed it down while walking back to my car! Parked less than a half block up the street and by the time I got to my car, it was finished. This bagel was not small and I'm a petite person! Richmond punches above its weight. From its breweries to its galleries, RVA has consistently offered more and better than it has any right to do. But in a lifetime spent living in and visiting Richmond, I have never found a consistently good bagel. Nate's changes that. The little shop on Main serves up a huge variety of the best bagels in town, and if you've been missing out, like I have, you should fix that quick. I went all in with a rosemary sea salt bagel, toasted, with scallion cream cheese and pepper jam. At the busiest time of the day it took around 30 minutes to get my order -- so remember to order ahead -- but it was worth every minute and worth every bite. The bagel itself was crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and herby, with the sea salt coming in at just the right moments. The cream cheese was soft and smooth, the jam just hot enough to make things interesting. From the traditional to the out-there, there are hundreds of topping and schmear combinations left to try, and I can't wait. You shouldn't either -- this is a friendly neighborhood shop that's holding Richmond's entire bagel scene on its shoulders, and helping the city throw one more punch above its weight. read more

I'm not sure whether it was just a bad day for them but both my boyfriend and I did not enjoy the bagels we got at Nate's. My bagel was unfortunately very tough and difficult to eat and I wasn't able to finish it. We thought they were pretty terrible. A lot of people compare Nate's to the NYC bagels which I would disagree. Okay, here goes: Nate's is home to the best bagel I've ever had. I didn't believe my friend when she told me the bagels here were better than our favorite bagel spot in college, but holy cow she was right. I ordered the rosemary sea salt bagel with scallion cream cheese. The bagel was absolutely perfect - so fluffy on the inside with a nice crust on the outside. It was my first rosemary sea salt bagel, and honestly it's probably my new favorite bagel flavor. Some bagel places totally skimp on cream cheese, so I happy to find a generous amount of scallion cream cheese on my bagel. I'm sorry to say that I have no photos of this amazing bagel because I devoured it immediately, but that should serve as a testament to its amazingness. The line was super long but moved relatively fast. I definitely don't recommend sitting down - there's very limited seating and it's really cramped. It is quite simply that Nate's Bagels are absolutely the MOST fantabulous bagel that has ever graced my soup-cooler in 51 years...ANYWHERE. Nate's is a really sterling example of how a business that operates in a vacuum will be perceived to be so much better than it actually is--because it's the only one available. Bagels are small and super dense, they sell out quickly, and whenever I order a lox with the works I receive exactly six capers. I've never had a bagel cut in half evenly, and when I ask for my bagel to be toasted, I'm pretty sure somebody in the kitchen stands there and thinks real hard about warming it up with their mind. It's just perfectly *fine*; if another bagel shopped moved into the area, Nate's would be in serious danger. In fact, I only ever visit Nate's when my car's in the shop and I can't drive out to the west end to visit Cupertino's, which is half as expensive and twice as good. Edit: In the pre-COVID times, visiting this place was a lesson in not losing your mind. They use their (admittedly limited) space terribly and if you're the kind of person who's worked in food service and inefficiency makes you want to scream, you gotta just put your head down and breathe. Their pivot to online ordering and outside pickup was great. I hope they continue with the pickup window system. read more

We decided to stop by Nate's after driving through Richmond on the way home from a wedding - and it was totally worth the stop. Despite the MASSIVE line we were able to order breakfast fairly painlessly, and even eventually find a seat in the crowded space. I enjoyed the Gateway (lox cream cheese, tomatoes, onions and capers on an onion bagel) which was delicious and very well priced at a little over $5. My boyfriend got a turkey with herb spread for around $7 and liked his equally as much (if not more). With two drip coffees, we were in and out for less than $20! I'm not sure when i'll be back in the area, but when I am I will DEFINITELY be back! I feel like I have at least a dozen more bagels to try! read more

I am blown away by Nate's Bagels. Me and my boyfriend visited Richmond for a couple of days this weekend and we had heard that Nate's Bagels should definitely be on our list to try. We ended up going twice and taking bagels back home to our family. They have a tiny shop that gets filled up pretty quick, but the line moved fast. Only being able to see over the counter on my own and the menu let me know otherwise, because there were no local stout bagels or fantastic house-made vegan 'cream cheese' back then! I'm a Joe Schmo kind of guy when it comes to bagels. All I have is a palate akin to Einstein's when it comes to my bagel palette (cut me some slack- I'm from TX). Having Einstein's as my reference point, this everyday guy def recognizes the difference in quality overall. Def better bang for your buck. The Gateway (your standard bagel and lox) is as flavorful and fresh than one would ask for. I'm a sucker for capers and it didn't disappoint on the umami scale. Learning: unlike a chain bagel, you apparently need to make sure you know what you're doing and say you want the thing toasted. That was my only regret). I assume it's because these are freshly made bagels? As I adapt, I will need to experience more by comparing this to another bagel place I've been told is the Belle of the ball. Decided to walk here after a morning class, ~7-8 minute walk from my house. I've always drove past Nate's but never managed to go and try it & i've heard so many good things about it from my friends! Based on my personal taste, I got the Ol' Virginny on the oh so famous, Rosemary and sea salt bagel. The order came out really fast & that's a really good PRO for college students especially. This bagel, was THE. BEST. BAGEL. I have ever eaten in my life. So many flavors & textures that all went so well together. I DEFINITELY reccommend the Rosemary bagel because it will not disappoint you . I don't get the hype at all. My bagel tasted stale and i ate it as soon as I got it in my car out front. They forgot the lox on the bagel. The Turkey Reuben they forgot the sauerkraut on it. We asked for bagels to be toasted they weren't. Bagel was more like bread but did taste stale. Only reason for two stars was the coffee was great. But we asked for creams they forgot it. I have been twice over the past few months. You can easily order online and it says it should be ready in 30 minutes (we tried ordering by phone but no one picks it up). Upon arrival, you wait outside with a ton of people which can be a good sign until they call your number. Unfortunately, both times did not take 30 minutes. The first trip took an hour and my most recent trip took 45 minutes. While improvement, I suggest they update the wait time on the website. In terms of the food, it's a bit pricey for RVA. A basic bagel sandwich easily runs $10+. As for the food, it's fine. I expected more as this place is very popular, but it's just okay. They also messed up on of our orders. I was not at all impressed by their lox bagel sandwich and I actually liked their classic breakfast bagel more. They put SO MUCH cream cheese in the lox that it really took away the other flavors. Could barely taste the capers which is crazy because capers are very salty. My friend and I split each but apparently her bacon in the classic breakfast bagel was burnt. Mine were perfect though. The bagels themselves were pretty good but hurt my jaw because they're so chewy. I'd like to go back and try the other flavors.
