I went to school in Charlottesville and have long thought Bodo's bagels to be the best bagels to be the best in Virginia. About a year ago, Nate's proved me wrong and I've been going religiously ever since. Their bagels are toasted to perfection - so soft on the inside with a slight crunch on the outside. My favorite is the everything bagel but rosemary sea salt is a very close second! The interior leaves something to be desired - the only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5. There's seating for roughly 15 and when there's a long line weaving through the shop, you'll often have someone standing right over top of you, asking you to push in your chair, or even inquiring if you're about to leave. With the exception of one time, it's not really a conducive space for a party of more than 2. Make sure to pick up their loyalty card, which gives you a free bagel or cup of coffee for every 9 purchases you make. Just this month, they changed the card to restrict punches for bagels/coffee only between 11am-3pm Mon.-Fri. I'm (selfishly) a bit disappointed in this but only because I was madly reaping the benefits of earning items during full operating hours. :) Long story short - the bagels / bagel sandwiches are absolute perfection and you'll 100% want to come back; Nate's simply is going to need to invest in a larger space to accommodate the swarms of people who want to eat these delicious bagels. read more

**They have only been open for two days, so some menu items aren't available yet, they are rapidly running out of things while there's lines out the door, and there is no bulk ordering yet.** I've barely touched it, but I already love this place. There's a degree of endearment to this shop and the people I can't quite put my finger on, but they're so kind and passionate, the menu is great, the shop is spacious, stylish and comfortable, even when it's hectic, and despite its being only the second day, they're fast, efficient, willing to compromise and work with the customer, when they're out of something, in seconds flat. They communicate well, and this will be important to handling volume and staying consistent down the road. Sure, they were out of a lot of things, hadn't made a couple of flavors that were on the menu yet: it's the second day. Godspeed to these guys for getting their bearings as well as they already had them after two intense rush mornings. The staff is charming, easy to banter with and makes a busy atmosphere still feel relaxing and put a smile on your face. The line moves very quickly; there's hand-menus by the door, no overhead, but the staff is patient and knowledgeable and will make what you need, within their means. Now, on to the bagel: I was expecting something yummy, but I was not expecting a pro-level succulent, soft, divine masterful bagel like this. Bummer was they were out of Everything (my fav!, so I guess I'll just have to come back! ;P) but I came around 11:30 AM on their second day, and they've been packed all morning (drowning in brown bags, sweat on the brow, line out the door,) so everyone always has to be patient with a new shop crunching numbers and figuring out exactly how to handle volume. They communicate as a well-oiled machine; immediately got back to me and I switched to Poppy. This was the most moist, shiny, soft perfect Poppy Bagel I've ever eaten; it had the perfect salt balance as to not be overpowering, an amazing crust that still stayed tender on the outside: there was no part of the bagel that had hardened or burned or had any tough chew; **This was the vehicle for my incredibly delicious Holy Muffaletta! sandwich, with house pastrami, pork roll, olive tapenade and scallion cream cheese. The meats were juicy, balanced and the spreads tasted very fresh, not overly salty, sweet, definitely not any processing, with a great flavor of scallion, olive and the natural cured succulence of the meat. The bagel was thick and the filling-to-bagel ratio was perfect (I also want a vat of that scallion cream cheese. It's SO. GOOD.) Definitely will be back a.s.a.p. to try other bagels and sandwiches. Also, they have a stocked bakery case filled with rugelachs, cookies, muffins, scones and sell whole loaves of their house-made challah and granola (everything is scratch-baked in-house, and I haven't had any, but have heard only stellar things, and they looked fantastic!) and have a full coffee bar (they serve both Ironclad Coffee AND Rostov's,) as well as house-made sides like salads, slaws and soups and a selection of Route 11 Chips to enjoy with your bagel! It's a comprehensive New York-style bakery experience, and I have feeling, ever since their charming pop-ups in neighborhood markets around the city, Nate's Bagels is going to be an instant-classic RVA morning staple that we all hope is here to stay! I grew up near NYC an am constantly missing real pizza and bagels here in Richmond... but no more! These bagels have a chewy/crunchy crust and a fluffy interior. They're big enough that there's no hole in the middle (a true bagel). I ordered the glamper with bacon. It was a bit on the salty side but that was likely due to me adding bacon to something with feta cheese. Definitely get your bagel toasted for best results! OMG. These are the first GOOD bagels that I have found in Virginia. Having grown up in Philly, I am an admitted bagel snob. But these live up to my expectations! They aren't doughy, they have lots of flavor and good texture, and, most importantly for me, they are toasted. I went on their first Saturday open and arrived 5minutes to 8am and I was already 10th in line. I expected this and waited in anticipation. They have paper menus out and some items weren't available just yet but they have a very extensive menu. As they are still working out production, you could only order two sandwiches and only 3 bagels to go, so no half doz bagel orders just yet. They also have the normal range of coffee offerings. Thought, this was the start of day 3 since opening, they were quick, accurate, friendly and responsive. I ordered two large drip coffees and their coffee is great. They have a milk station near the door. They give you the to-go bagels right away and they call your number for bagel sandwiches. I ordered the O'l Virginny for boyfriend and I got lox with the works, both on everything bagels. The bagel is definitely a harder, crustyer bagel with a darker shade exterior. The everything bagel appears to have poppy seeds and Sesame seeds only. It could really use the salt and onion I have found on other everything bagels. It's definitely good for what it is. The lox with the works will set you back $10. I would recommend it to people. On street parking only. Got the confirmation email it would be ready. It took over a hour and some change of standing outside the store for us to get our three very simple bagels. We were not the only ones either. There were a lot of folks who had already been there for an hour or more. So really place your order, go shopping, run a couple miles, walk your dog for an hour, fall back asleep while watching HGTV and by the time you wake up your bagel might be ready. Honestly it was a pretty terrible bagel. I had a sea salt toasted with cream cheese. If I had ordered a baguette, I would have been pretty happy. But I ordered a bagel and boy was I disappointed. The bagel was dry, airy and flavorless. The cream cheese was the whipped variety which, IMO, is unacceptable in a place that bills itself as a bagel shop. I know it's easier/ faster to spread and is probably a lot cheaper than a block, but if running bagel shops was easy... The staff was flustered and rude (rolling eyes at customers rude) but I was there on one of the first days that they were in business (and some of the customers kinda deserved it). I was lucky enough to have easy access to Bodo's for my four years at UVa, so I had very high standards when going to Nate's Bagels. Although Nate's Bagels was not as good as Bodo's, I definitely think it has some of the best bagels in the Richmond area. Since it was my first visit, I wanted to try something simple so that I could get a feel for their bagels without the extra distraction of toppings. I ended up choosing a plain bagel with plain cream cheese and it was terrific. The outside of the bagel was perfectly golden-brown and firm, but the interior was soft and chewy (slightly too chewy in my opinion). There was also a perfect amount of cream cheese, so it wasn't overly messy either. I came on a Tuesday morning, so there was no line, but they were out of almost all varieties of bagels other than plain ones. It's the Fan Fan Fan ... love it love it love it. What?! ..Another Breakfast place in The Fan..can there be anymore in the Fan these days? So , I entered Nates with a a little skepticism, and was pleasantly surprised. I like the fact that the seating was minimal but was able to fit a lot of people .. the number of bagel selection was large. The menu showed lots of possible choices that you could have. Now for the food, fresh .. they make their bengals fresh every day. I had the bagels and lox... came with capers onions.. cream cheese .. proper..it was delicious. Nate's definitely lives up to the hype. As someone who's grown up on NYC/NJ bagels, my bar for bagels is sky high- and Nate's met it. Now this is a legit bagel, easily the best I've had in the entire state of Virginia. I showed up on a rainy Sunday morning within a few minutes after they opened. The stereo was playing 80s tunes quite loud. I got six bagels to go, as well as a sandwich with egg, bacon, and cheddar cheese. For the sandwich, I went with the plain bagel, just because I wanted to taste it and not be distracted by other flavors. I could immediately tell upon my first bite that this is a kettle boiled bagel, and I like seeing those blisters on the outside. Soft and chewy on the inside, just really made. And the sandwich had a real egg on it, thank goodness. Also, major props for serving real orange juice, even though the girl who took my order didn't even know that they had any in stock. The only real issue I had was that the air conditioning was on strong and I got cold in there pretty quickly. But because the bagel was so fantastic, I can't award anything less than 5 stars. I will definitely return the next time I'm passing through Richmond, even though I live an hour away. read more

This place has the best bagels in Richmond hands down. This weekend I had their breakfast sandwiches for the first time: the Glamper and the Ol' Virginny. I got the Glamper with bacon, it's egg, greens, feta and an herb aioli; this breakfast sandwich is just perfection for a lazy weekend morning. I have to say, while the Glamper is my favorite the Ol' Virginny is a close second. The Ol' Virginny is a sausage and egg sandwich with cream cheese, sautéed onions, and tomato jam; I've never seen a sandwich mix elegant and grease products so well! This sandwich is perfect if you've drank a little too much the night before. Overall, Nate's is a go-to reliable spot. The coffee is delicious, the branding is delightful.... Oh, and the best part? They make real egg creams here. They even have U-Bet syrup, which is a big deal to any NYer currently over 40 (trust me). read more

I've attempted to go again, but the line was too crazy for the people I was with, so we headed to Fancy Biscuit. I've never been sad to go to Fancy Biscuit, but I was a little that day...which should say something. I stopped by this place on the drive up to DC, and was rather disappointed. Based off the reviews, line out the door, and the 20+ minute wait you'd think this place would be worth the stop. I got the Simple Lunch, with Pastrami, Havarti Cheese on an Everything bagel. The reason I gave this place 2-stars is because the bagel was cold, even after I asked to have it toasted, and I was extremely chewy. If you're looking for a large, fluffy bagel, Nate's will certainly deliver. Two of us came here recently on a very rainy day, and I was happy to see that the line wasn't out the door. The place is small inside, but there is a decent number of seats at the bar and a couple of small tables; we waited about 10-15 minutes for our bagels to come out and by the end of it, every spot was open on a Sunday afternoon. I ordered a light roast drip coffee and the vegan Virginny but with traditional cream cheese. The combination was tasty between the caramelized onions and tomato jam! The website states that it comes with sausage, but mine did not that day - not sure why. The bagel itself was large and soft. The coffee was also good. Logistically, the space is a tad small when many people are waiting for their orders. Also, you are handed a number token that will be called when your order is ready; unfortunately, they are not handed out in chronological order, so you have no idea when you will be called. Many orders that were placed after ours came out before us. You'd here "24!" then "5!" then "17!" so that was frustrating. Plus, the menu doesn't seem to be so up and down where one sandwich could take that much longer than another based on orders in, unless you simply get a bagel and cream cheese. When we were waiting, we also noticed that many bagel types were gone for the day already, but we wanted plain (which they had plenty of) so it worked out fine. Also, the menu offerings have a lot of overlapping ingredients, so this place strikes me as one where once you find a bagel you like, it will probably become your go-to. The people working here are nice, but because it is so crowded, don't expect to have a conversation with anyone. Parking can be a bit dicey, but if you drive around the block, you should be able to find a spot. It's nice that people don't tend to overstay their welcome here given the tight quarters. Bottom line: These bagels are filling for lunch or breakfast! Be prepared to wait a bit for your food to come out. read more
