I stopped by this place on the drive up to DC, and was rather disappointed. Based off the reviews, line out the door, and the 20+ minute wait you'd think this place would be worth the stop. I got the Simple Lunch, with Pastrami, Havarti Cheese on an Everything bagel. The reason I gave this place 2-stars is because the bagel was cold, even after I asked to have it toasted, and I was extremely chewy. If you're looking for a large, fluffy bagel, Nate's will certainly deliver. Two of us came here recently on a very rainy day, and I was happy to see that the line wasn't out the door. The place is small inside, but there is a decent number of seats at the bar and a couple of small tables; we waited about 10-15 minutes for our bagels to come out and by the end of it, every spot was open on a Sunday afternoon. I ordered a light roast drip coffee and the vegan Virginny but with traditional cream cheese. The combination was tasty between the caramelized onions and tomato jam! The website states that it comes with sausage, but mine did not that day - not sure why. The bagel itself was large and soft. The coffee was also good. Logistically, the space is a tad small when many people are waiting for their orders. Also, you are handed a number token that will be called when your order is ready; unfortunately, they are not handed out in chronological order, so you have no idea when you will be called. Many orders that were placed after ours came out before us. You'd here "24!" then "5!" then "17!" so that was frustrating. Plus, the menu doesn't seem to be so up and down where one sandwich could take that much longer than another based on orders in, unless you simply get a bagel and cream cheese. When we were waiting, we also noticed that many bagel types were gone for the day already, but we wanted plain (which they had plenty of) so it worked out fine. Also, the menu offerings have a lot of overlapping ingredients, so this place strikes me as one where once you find a bagel you like, it will probably become your go-to. The people working here are nice, but because it is so crowded, don't expect to have a conversation with anyone. Parking can be a bit dicey, but if you drive around the block, you should be able to find a spot. It's nice that people don't tend to overstay their welcome here given the tight quarters. Bottom line: These bagels are filling for lunch or breakfast! Be prepared to wait a bit for your food to come out. read more

I kept driving by this place when i was downtown and was always interested in trying it. Today I woke up and was REALLY craving a bagel breakfast sammy, so I decided today was that day. Once I arrived, I saw they were only doing carry out. This was my mistake for not checking beforehand. I told myself I wouldn't mind placing the order and then driving around or sitting in my car until it's ready for pick up. Thaaat wasn't exactly how things unfolded. I called at least five times to try and place the order and was sent to voicemail immediately every single time and their online ordering system was off. I waited, tried again. Still off. I had also arrived over 3 hours before close so I don't understand what the issue could've been. Prior to the pandemic I was in Nate's A lot. Bring from jersey I needed my bagel fix. I would even do bagel runs for my wife's office at Nate's. A couple of times I ordered a cinnamon raisin bagel and it was so hard it was inedible. I chalked it up to whatever they use to make it. Fast forward to recently. I got a everything bagel (my also go to) and it was stale and harder than Italian bread. The lady at the door giving out orders said' "everything bagels are usually harder" but still took it back. For reasons that I will save for another story, today was the day for my last bagel for a while, a long while. So I just had to go back to Nate's. I had the Classic Breakfast, fried egg, bacon and cheese on an everything bagel. And again, no disappointment. Bagel was nicely toasted, with a crunchy golden brown exterior and a soft, chewy interior. The fried egg, bacon and cheese are pretty standard, but that's a good thing when it comes to a fried egg, bacon and cheese. But, as you can see from the one photo, I got great cheese pull. I was so excited to try this place after a couple people recommended it in the Richmond area. I went around 11 am on a Saturday morning. The inside is pretty tight but the line moves very fast. They have a variety of bagels, bagel breakfast sandwiches, muffins, coffees and cookies including black and whites! They also sell their cream cheeses, spreads and juices in the refrigerator. I had the everything bagel with lox cream cheese. The bagel was excellent, chewy and dense with a crisp outside that made toasting unnecessary. The bagels were large but not too bready and had a ton of everything bagel topping. I also really liked the lox cream cheese which had pieces of salmon mixed throughout. It is a good alternative if you don't want the larger lox sandwich. The also tried the Lox Works on a Rosemary Sea Salt bagel which came with capers, smoked salmon, pickled onion and cream cheese. The sandwich was very large and came with a lot salmon and fillings which I was very pleased about. I wish more places had the Rosemary Sea Salt bagel! Service was friendly and fast and there is some seating inside as well as a couple of seats along the coffee bar. The Americano was also very good. I highly recommend this if looking for authentic bagels in Richmond (or Virginia in general)! read more

I have drove by this place well over a hundred times, but never stopped in. I had just got done working one morning and was driving by and it didn't look too busy so I stopped in to check it out. They have quite a few items on the menus, or just a bagel and topping if you want that. I decided to go with one bagel, and one bagel sandwich. The sandwich was the Ol' Virginny with sausage, egg and tomato jam. It was kind of messy, but that wasn't a big deal, I licked it off my fingers. The bagel was pretty chewy and I made it through half and my jaw started hurting. The bagel wasn't bad, it tasted pretty good and the cream cheese was good too. It is a place I would come back to again and try something new. It is pretty small in the inside, and I feel like there were a couple places outside to sit. read more

This is a fantastic bagel place. Relaxed atmosphere and cool people. The restaurant is small with limited seating so I suggest getting something to go. It can get crowded on weekends for brunch/lunch. If you like salmon, you have to try their lox the works on an everything bagel. It was delicious - one of the best bagel meals I've ever had. Happy Tuesday, I love a good yummy bagel. Everything w butter just does the trick. Rather than a Panera bagel I decided to try a local bakery and had high expectations from other yelper's reviews and pictures! When I arrived it was today, Tuesday, 12 noonish and not busy at all. The cashier was insanely impatient and completely off putting to my girlfriend and I. Once my order was up the cook who handed me my food was too occupied to wait for me as a paying customer, with yelling my order number 3 times in a very annoyed tone. The bagel was aight. I ordered the Ol' Virginny and it was tasty, but apparently they are unable to provide egg whites only on their sandwiches (not sure why) which is disappointing. I'm confused...but oh well. That being said, the bagel was great and tasted fresh. The awkward layout of the bagel shop makes it extremely difficult to enjoy your food, so I would suggest this as a takeout only establishment. Grabbed breakfast here on a weekend trip to Richmond. We sought it out due to the great reviews and were not disappointed! Right now they are only doing online and phone orders, but the online ordering is super easy. I got the New Virginny on rosemary and sea salt and it was delicious!!! Bagels are great for Richmond. However, I've been there a dozen times and have only gotten a correct order maybe once. They've become rather lazy in their popularity. So I was on the hunt for something better than Einstein's and I found Nate's Bagels. In the Fan district, Nate's is corner store charming. A bar that seats maybe 6 and a couple of tables too for those that dare to dine in. It's not very big and most customers are in line for pickup. The three times I've gone, there has always been a line...indicative of how amazing the bagels are!! Better yet, they have Taylor ham!! A true indicator of Jersey bagels I've only had their Jersey Turnpile bagel sandwich, because Taylor ham, and coffee but it's been great those three times. This is my new bagel place and it should be yours if you love "real" bagels. read more

Unfortunately, Nate did not study the art of running a bagel shop which currently makes obtaining your morning fix more of a headache than it's worth. Nate, I hope you're reading because I have one simple fix that will revolutionize your business - Customers order from the staff preparing the bagels. Yes, this is how it is done at every bagel shop in the five-boroughs and for GOOD REASONS: (1) Simple orders are expedited - customer A orders a bagel with cream cheese, staff prepares bagel, customer moves up the line, pays, and leaves. One less customer standing around. One more happy customer. Customer B orders a sesame bagel, lightly toasted, with one slice of taylor ham, egg white, and melted muenster. Ticket is sent back, customer moves forward, pays, gets coffee, and waits (but ... sandwich is already being prepared). Great! (2) Bagel sandwich is already being prepared while customers are rung up/receive coffee. Nate, the line is OUT THE DOOR. However, the line should be AT THE REGI$TER. That's right, lock them in! Customers line up to order from the staff who immediately begin preparing their bagels. Then customers proceed to wait for their orders, but with a purpose! They must pay (a great way to kill some time while they wait for their orders, I might add). On a busy day, by the time the customer reaches the register and receives their coffee, the ticket is up and the customer is free to go. No loitering! Amazing. With this simple fix Nate's Bagels might as well be airlifted from Park Slope. Great bagels, efficient process, fast service. The side effect, more money in Nate's pocket - which he deserves! read more

Get here early because they sell out for a reason! The bagels here are incredible. To be specific, the bagel sandwiches are what keep me coming back. I've always been a huge fan of a toasted everything bagel with lox and cream cheese, and Nate's does it RIGHT. To those complaining about having to stand in line: get over it, my dude. Great things come to those who wait. These bagels make a bad morning a happy one. They give stability to an early wake-up call. Updated review: On-line ordering option and redesign of interior have resolved the crowd issue that ruined the Nate's experience. I've ordered at the counter and on line: both experiences were vastly superior to how Nate's was operating pre-COVID. On-line experience (preferred) lets you order and pay for your food, gives you a pretty accurate anticipated pick-up time, and sends you a text when your order is ready. Sure, the pick-up time may be 45-55 minutes after you order. But Nate has a great product, and is worth waiting for. So I am going to eat my previous words.... and a lot more of Nate's bagels. read more
