National Coney Island has been a long time favorite stop after Sunday church service eatery for my family and friends. The food and service is always top tier especially for our large gatherings. They have a large parking lot as well as a large dining area to accommodate the pickiest of eaters. They also have seating for children. We mostly dine-in and take in the ambiance of this award winning Coney Island. The dining area even has an overflow area to accommodate larger groups for their dining pleasure. Their menu has something for everyone. On this day, the counter service area was closed for dining in. Jen was so helpful for me ordering takeout on this day. She not only took my order but she also explained the Coney Bucks Reward program and got me signed up. I knew nothing about this after all these years. Thank you Jen! LOVE!! The service was the fastest I have ever seen!! Our food came out in what felt like less than 10 minutes!! The prices were standard and the staff were kind. No waiting to be sat and no long waits for food. This Coney is connected to a bar so just make sure you read the names above the entrances and you'll be fine! I ordered my food through doordash. When it arrive it was cold. I had to preheat my food up just to eat it. As soon as it touched down to my location. I called the store and the manager told me that I had to call doordash and report but from my understanding my Dasher was already inside the store waiting on my order. So from the store to my house it's nothing but 1 mile away. I'm not understanding how my food was called but anyways I will not be ordering from this location ever again. read more

Whenever I come home to Michigan, nothing makes the trip complete like hitting a coney restaurant. This was my first visit to National and it did not disappoint. This is comfort food, a classic America diner. Don't drop in looking for a world class high end dining experience ... ain't the place for that. But if you're down for a burger, a dog and some fries, this is the joint. My Detroit style coney was spot on, and that dog casing "snap" is something only Michiganders can truly appreciate. Fancy like is going to be at the national Coney Island. We could eat here 5 times over in the time it would hair down the street. A Large Greek salad sounds good, ordered a large and a baby , 2 southwest Hanis. Greek salads were out within minutes of ordering. Food was quick and always tastes the same too. The Greek salad was okay, had a lettuce bits of that were rotten here and there. The southwest hani tasted just like the regular hani, it had a slight hint of chipotle Mayo, but definitely not enough to be notable. Service was good and quick too. read more

I was there Tuesday night having a great time with my friends until the table over from us started screaming at my friends and approaching us to fight and no one did anything about the situation after I said call 911 extremely upset about this experience, the manager kicked us out after coming to the situation 5 minutes after it happened like he didn't hear her screaming and tell us it's a drama free zone when all we wanted to do is eat and have a good time. We used to love coming as a family - that was before the pandemic. Since then, it's progressively worse every time we go. I gave two stars for the two or three regular waitresses that work the breakfast shift in weekends - they're usually great, just not enough for us to keep trying one more time. I arrived around 7 pm on February 3 and it was fairly busy. I was seated and then the server, Kristen quickly arrived to take my order. She was very friendly and attentive which was a wonderful feeling not only did that make me feel good but she seemed like she really cared about her job and not just going through the motions. She checked back just the right amount of times and had no problem refilling my diet pop(some other places seem to act like it's a chore). It's employees like that who makes people want to come back. During our trip to Detroit we decided we wanted to try a Michigan style chili dog. We did a little research and we definitely weren't disappointed. The environment was really nice, the folks were nice, and the food as you'll see was delicious. Let's get to it.. 2 Coneys Cheesy Waffle Fries What Is It: These coneys are done up Michigan style with house made chili, mustard, and diced onions the latter of which I had left off. The waffle fries come with a cheese sauce that tasted like cheddar to me. Presentation: It looks as good as coney's and fries are gonna look. It looks like the picture which is all I can ask for. 7 out of 10 Taste/Final Analysis: The chili dog was every bit as delicious as I'd hoped. The chili and mustard were fine but the actual hot dog itself is where this shined. The dog actually had a snap to it which only the finest wieners have. I'm not sure if it's locally sourced meat but it was phenomenal. The cheese fries were nothing to sneeze at either ad the fries were nice and crispy and the cheese sauce was delicious and plentiful. All in all I'm definitely glad we stopped by here and would be a regular stop for me if I lived close to here. Thumbs way up. 10 out of 10 read more

Got take out here and came before they closed. They were cleaning and ending their night but they were not trying to punch us out or anything. They took our order and made it for us in a timely manner. My husband got a milkshake and he said it was one of the best he has had. I of course got a coney dog with everything on it. I LOVE CONEY DOGS! Coneys are one of the first things I eat when I travel back home. You just cannot get the coney chili outside of the tri-state area. The steamed bun, snap dog, chili is bathe in, mustard, and some onions is just the best thing ever. Gotta finish it with fountain Vernors or a Vernors float. National was slammed with the Sunday lunch rush but I was greeted immediately and seated within a couple minutes. By myself and I was able to be seated somewhere a bit quieter. My server was a funny, sweet lady who was the best mix of efficient and personable. The first fountain Vernors was a blur, a euphoric blur. The bite into the first coney with the snap of the dog followed by the mess of coney sauce and I was done. Stick a fork in me. I took my time making sure I didn't miss a single speck of my coneys. This is a typical National Coney Island and the breakfast selections we got were pretty much what we expected. I got a vegetable egg white omelette with the hash browns and rye toast. My friend got 2 eggs, hash browns and rye toast. When he opened the apple jelly it literally dripped onto his seat - just missed his lap!! So he skipped the jelly and asked for extra butter. The waitress forgot the butter until he was done with his toast. Then she brought it!! Not sure what she expected him to put it on but whatever!!!! The food wasn't greasy which is a good thing. Been here many times while doing business on this side of town - always excellent coneys, fast no-nonsense service... the whole Michigan Coney Island experience. Today however, I am here with 3 co-workers to attempt to validate an urban legend regarding a special version of a Coney Dog...the so-called "Loose". A "Loose" is a hot dog bun filled with loose ground beef and then topped with coney-style chili and chopped white onions... Of course, you should understand that you won't find a "Loose" listed anywhere on National's menu...this is strictly east-side slang supposedly only known to Coney Island servers east of Woodward Ave. in Metro Detroit. We're talking about Warren, Sterling Heights, St. Clair Shores, Roseville, Eastpointe, even the Pointes - you know the drill. According to legend, in these parts, you can call out your order for "One Chili Dog and one Loose" without needing to provide any further explanation. Remember, this is strictly an "east-side" thing...don't for a minute think that it would work in Ann Arbor, Novi, Canton or Redford. We're here at the National Coney Island on Van Dyke between 12 and 13 to put the urban legend to the test. Well, it worked! Our server Patty didn't miss a beat as I ordered "one Coney with everything and one Loose...One of each". After delivering our orders, I asked our server Patty how she wrote my order out. After a 12hr shift husband and I ran out to grab a quick bite to eat before heading to the airport for our 25th anniversary vacation! Wow What a disappointment Really can't say if the food was any good because the waitress was beyond unacceptable... I ordered wings and fries with a small Greek salad and a set side of pickles!!! Dear National, I am not sure who made the decision to go with this new bun used for burgers, but as a consumer of yours for almost 40 years, ya gone and messed up. Please bring back the sesame buns ASAP. This bun is like eating a burger in between to pieces of cake. Wow. This place was excellent. The staff was over the top as well. I sat up at the bar and had fast service and it was really personable. I had the grilled cheese coney, chili, and seasoned waffle fries loaded with chili and cheese. I will hate myself later, but right now, 2 minutes after finished eating it, I am satisfied. Usually this place is fairly decent and the people are usually nice and I typically enjoy my experience here however I went here tonight with my boyfriend and we only saw our waitress two times. Sorry, 3. The first time she was taking our order and she assumed that my boyfriend's order was for both of us, so the second time she came along she was dropping the food off, then I placed my order. Then she really didn't check up on us, no drink refills, just kinda standing up there waiting for other people's food. Really it was until another waitress asked if we needed something is when she stepped in again. She seemed nice enough, but could be more attentive and communicative. Maybe she was new, not sure. Of all the things I miss about Michigan, National Coney Island is by far number 1. What isn't great about this drunk man's haven. The perfect after the bar food, hungover morning food, or just a quick lunch or dinner. Don't come here expecting award winning food, come here with the expectation of good food that isn't good for you. My favorite is the Hani Special, an amazing blend of fried chicken, tomatoes, lettuce, and cheddar and swiss cheese. Get it with ranch on the side and why stop there make sure to get that little piece of heaven that is their cheese fries, and if you're extra adventurous get the chili cheese fries. The chili dog is also a fan favorite here. The service is always quick and efficient and after the bar it seems to be everyone's favorite place to keep the party going. I was in the Detroit area over the weekend for a wedding. Good wedding, good times, but to be perfectly honest, I have absolutely no reason to ever head back to Detroit or its surrounding neighborhoods. No offense to those of you who call it home, but Detroit kinda sucks ass. However, I do realize that this means I will have to miss one of the best things ever. A $2.59 Coney Dog with bacon and cheese at 2am after a good night of drinking. That just hit the spot. My god, that was awesome. National Coney Island is "the" chain of all night diners that cater to those looking for a late night greasy spoon fix or something to absorb all the beer at 2:30 am. There have been many late summer nights where friends and I frequent this restaurant because nothing else is open. The prices can't be beat! You can eat like a king for less than $7. That's including a drink! Many people crave the chili-cheese fries! It becomes one of those things where you just want them! Of course they also serve the side salads, hot dogs, hamburgers, and all the other type of food you'd might expect from a Coney Island restaurant. The dining room in this particular Coney is HUGE. The wife and I get carry out from here once in a blue moon, its your standard National Coney island. Coney's, Hannis, Chili fries etc. I do miss that scoop of Cole slaw and pickle they would give you with your Hanni ( oh the good old days ) I admit their chili is probably the best around but the prices are getting up there and the presentation of the meals are kinda of sloppy, now maybe that's because I usually get carry out but still when you open the carry out box and your sandwich is upside down and half the chicken is under the sandwich and not in it, well...you know what I mean? though I do venture other Coney island places Ill probably still stop by National Coney island, but I do have a small wish list of changes for this Coney chain. read more
