I have been a patron of Neds for many years and always have found the food very good. Unfortunately yesterday I ordered the prime rib and was very disappointed. There was a LOT if fat left on the cut of meat and and it really tasted very bland. The mash potatoes were good but the green beans had no flavor. This is my favorite restaurant in Saint Augustine and well worth the drive. The food is consistently delicious and satisfying. One of my favorites is the Blackened Fish Wrap which I order dairy. Ned's also has awesome specials like the Creole Shrimp sautéed with okra, so savory! This spot is frequented by locals and boy do they have good taste! The prices are unbeatable for the prices and quality of food. If you haven't checked out Ned's do yourself a favor and drop in. Visiting from Ft Lauderdale. After seeing 4.5 stars everywhere for this restaurant I was intrigued. Especially as eclectic as the menu is. Hubby had the Philly which was definitely real shaved prime rib. Served on a panini pressed roll. Nice twist. I had the blackened fish wrap. It was Cod , so that was the first plus. It wasn't Tilapia ! It was a very nice wrap filled with cabbage , cheese, and a yummmy pink sauce. The black beans and rice served on the side rivaled any I've had in Miami. Service was attentive and pleasant. Had a 10 min wait at lunchtime on a Monday , so this place IS popular. The menu had so many choices it was hard to decide. Superb***** was looking for an off the path "non-touristy" place and was suggested to try Neds. Daily specials as well as standard entrees and dishes. Even had the pleasure of being greeted by Ken (recently acquired from Ned) The menu is extensive and creative, I'm sure you'll find something even for the pickiest appetites. The chicken tenders are hand breaded and served on a platter of fries. I particularly enjoyed my prime rib, tender and served with a delicate side of horseradish. First time here, even though we're locals. It's a small local restaurant that's a jewel! Hubby and I were seated at our table immediately, server was friendly and service was great. We both got the prime rib and it was delicious. Server asked us about dessert and when he said creme brule we both said yes. I didn't get a picture, but believe me it was over the top awesome. Prices are very reasonable and the staff is great. We had pineapple upside down cake for dessert and that was delish as well. Cake was so most and you could taste the caramelization on the top. So happy I accidentally ended up at this place!!! As you walk in you see a very modest looking diner, you'd think there's nothing special about it. Then, you see the menu. I was delighted to see such a variety of items, all sounded fresh and appetizing. We ordered coconut shrimp as appetizer, which came with a delicious plum sauce, and it wasn't so sweet and coconutty as other places usually do, they were light and tasty. My mom had the Spanish Beans & Rice with Chicken & Chorizo, which was a huge plate, a bit spicy for my taste but it was supposed to be spicy (even the waitress warned us), my mom loved it. I had the portobello mushroom sandwich, with gouda and fresh tomatoes, it was to die for! The prices were fair, especially for such an array of food. Very flavor-able food from the south. The spin on the fried green tomatoes are a must try. A lot of flavors that are well combined. The Stuffed chicken was a melt in the mouth meal. They gravy went well with the fresh mashed potatoes. The Shrimp and grids were delicious with the sauce they were marinated in. The service was also excellent. This is a hidden local gem and my go to place now. They have liver and onions, served with pickled cabbage and mashed potatoes - and it's so good! My husband had frittata, he liked it too. This locals hang out is southern soul food at its finest! Every time we visit, it's quite busy. The drive through line helps to alleviate this greatly. Portions are huge and sides are loaded with flavor. A fresh goat cheese salad with fresh berries quickly became my go-to. If you're extremely hungry, order the loaded burrito. The restaurant has a very welcoming feel upon arrival and the staff is very friendly. They just aren't very attentive. Immediately our drink orders were wrong, but mistakes happen and our waitress was apologetic. However, getting a refill is another story. I just think every time she said she'd get us a refill she just forgot. I did get up once to go get it myself, and was told again she'd be right there. She apologized when she brought our check and offered to fill our glasses then, but it was too late and we were extremely ready to go. Might want to sip your drinks when you go in here and make it last! I wish I could have the same enthusiasm about this place as others do about the food. The menu is huge and a lot to choose from. Perhaps my family and I just chose all the wrong items on the menu. We started off with Calamari which was fried with peppers. I did like the peppers and some of the Calamari rings were good, but some tasted...well...just not so good. They serve it with the tiny tentacle pieces too. Although we normally aren't a fan of these pieces we tried them (mistake for us) anyway. They were very dry and we worked too hard to eat them. It turned is off from eating any more. The waitress offered to box them and the funny part is we all said "NO" at the same time. Moving on, I ordered the Liver & Onions with veggies. It was edible, but near tasteless and tougher than I like personally, and the onions weren't quite done or caramelized as they should be in my opinion. Good thing there was salt & pepper on the table. The veggies were so mushy they sickened me, but the carrots are ok...just no flavor. But hey....the mashed potatoes were ok with salt. Needless to say, I didn't get a to go box for that either. My husband had the Chicken Parmigiana. He thought it was ok and I tasted and agree. It was served with the same mushy veggies and carrots and plain pasta with no flavor. My son had a cheeseburger with fries and that was probably the smartest choice. We were disappointed with the food, and even more disappointed with the cost. We went there purposely during the lunchtime hour since the prices are lower. $9 for lunch compared to $12 for dinner. We even inquired about this before we sat down. But alas, we were charged the dinner prices. Disappointing meal, disappointing prices and an overall disappointing experience for us. You know me...I like to let you know when a military and/or uniformed discount is available. I did ask and they ONLY provide a discount if you in uniform. With 4 1/2 stars, I was expecting really good food, but was disappointed. The ingredients were fresh, and service good, but it seemed more like a fast food diner, not a nice restaurant and certainly not 4 star quality cooking. The feta and walnut salad was overly loaded with way too much feta, way too many walnuts. Lettuce type was wrong for this type of salad, and some walnuts were candied, some not. Really out of balance dish. Other person in our party had flounder - flounder was very good, well seasoned and fresh, but pasta and vegetables were flavorless. Green beans were from a can and carrots may have been too, really disappointing. Key lime pie was mediocre at best. I'll end on a positive note: everyone was friendly and the unsweetened tea was delicious. I would go back, but with different expectations and I would avoid the salads and veggies. read more
