Got called up to needle and thread after a 30-45 minute wait, but I would still recommend that you make reservations if you want to visit! Really cool atmosphere and I love their "schtick" of making custom drinks (no cocktail/drink menu). Make sure to let them know if you have any allergies though! I told them I loved creamy tropical drinks and nutty flavors (think almond liquor or bitters) and they came up with a super creamy, nutty, pineapple drink with coconut cream for me that was super cute! Reminded me of a fancy pina colada. My partner asked for a strong creative drink and his was also super yummy and very strong. Had lots of different alcohols in it and mezcal and blue curaçao which made it taste smoky and look bright blue which was fun (like a fancy amf). read more

We both talked about our favorite cocktails...which is what he asked...then he went and essentially made us our favorite cocktails with really great ingredients. I guess we both wanted something surprising and more complex. Or that's what we expected anyway. So - that is to say that we weren't blown away with the creativity or the no-menu-interview process, but the cocktails that we got were very tasty. Wow. I'm blown away by the mixologists' talents. Needle and Thread surpassed my expectations. First off, love the ambiance. It's cute and cozy, just the right setting for some really good drinks. Good music in the background to set the mood with lots of small groups. A great place for a date or catching up with friends. My gfs sat at the bar, which is the prime spot to watch the magic unfold. I'm so impressed by how attentive and detailed the mixologists are. This is truly a craft and they have it down. It's really hard curating bespoke drinks on the spot for each person with very different flavor profiles. They nailed the drinks! OMG. I was so happy. Even their bar snacks are great. The olives and popcorn chicken were delicious. I can't rave enough about this place. This is my second bespoke speakeasy experience. The other one is in San Diego. Both are amazing. Their secretive approach to letting you into their bar is the kind of thing that really gets me excited for a place like this. Who doesn't love a commitment to themes? I also appreciate the suggestive photos in the stairway that lead up to their very aesthetically pleasing bar that overlooks Tavern Law below. Let me say that I appreciate how their drink menu isn't limited to a select few items. You are the 'signature' to their signature drinks. Without a menu, the brilliantly talented bartenders are able to craft a cocktail that speaks to you and your tastes specifically. How cool is that?! Added bonus, all the food we tried was positively delicious. I was kind of blown away that their popcorn chicken literally tasted like popcorn. Yum! Lastly, our waiter was very sweet, and she and the bartenders were right on the money when it came to our table enjoying our dinner and drinks fully. No it is not cheap, but if you are going to spend a good chuck of Change on drinks, this is the place. There is no menu so everything is done by giving them a feeling, a description, or what you like. I didn't realize how vague this can be until one of the people asked for a drink based on the description "lost at sea in the mediterainien, with the feel of fresh sea air". The drink even ended up coming in a fish glass which is wild that they even had. The best drink of the night actually ended up being a non-alcoholic drink our friend got. Tones of complexity that lasted well after the first sip. The service is immaculate and they can accommodate pretty much everything. The drinks take a minute, as to be expected, but the staff checks on you frequently. Getting a reservation is the key and difficult to do in a short time period. Most reservations (especially for the weekend) fill up fast so go to their website and get it about a week beforehand. The atmosphere is amazing with great warm lighting while simultaneously being a bit dim and sultuous. It is a wonderful place to go for a special occasion or to really show off to a date. read more

My boyfriend and I both enjoyed our drinks even though they were completely different! They also have some dishes here to have with your drinks and we decided on burrata & focaccia then the orange coconut sorbet for dessert. We were only able to snag a reservation prior to dinner so we didn't try much. The burrata and focaccia was 5/5 - SOOOO GOOD!!!! The burrata was so creamy and the focaccia was warm, delicate, and light. They even offer to bring out more pieces of focaccia if needed! The orange coconut sorbet was also 5/5 - so delicious and creamy and I was quite surprised that both flavors were easily noticed and balanced each other well. Service 5/5, ambiance 5/5 and food 5/5! The coolest concept ever for a speakeasy! I absolutely love the idea of describing your favorite flavor profiles and preferred liquors to a bartender and getting a personalized cocktail--it is a testament to how knowledgeable the bartenders here are! As a group with VERY different preferences, (think: 1 whiskey drinker, 1 vodka and gin drinker, and 1 tequila lover), we were so impressed that just by giving the bartender an idea of what we like, we received hand crafted cocktails that were way more than just a Manhattan or a gin and tonic. One thing I would have loved is if they had given a written description of each hand-crafted drink instead of just telling us verbally. Each drink had like 4-7 ingredients, so by the time the bartender was done describing we were all shocked, impressed, but also like ... wait what?! Our holiday trip to Seattle started off great with a visit to Needle & Thread on our first night. I'd heard about Tavern Law, but it wasn't until later that I found out about the amazing bar upstairs. In advance of our visit, we reserved a table for the bar which is a must. We arrived to a mostly quiet restaurant downstairs, and we were directed to the back to pick up a telephone to gain entry to the bar. We were buzzed in and went up a small staircase to find ourselves in a beautiful little room - dimly lit with soft music and only a few tables. We were shown to our table in the back where the hostess came back to spend a few minutes with each of us talking about our likes / dislikes as it related to cocktails. This is truly a bespoke bar: no menu. Based on our conversation, the bartenders created unique drinks for each of us. Really amazing - and they did such a great job. I didn't realize you could order food from Tavern Law, you can / and we did. We shared a few small plates, probably the best of which were the cheddar & corn cracklins with a Serrano pepper fondue. This is truly an incredible experience worth the hype! I forgot this was a "dealer's choice" cocktail kind of place once I was able to snag a reservation -I think this is what makes Needle & Thread so unique! The attention to detail from the staff to concoct a special drink that you'll love is unparalleled. My husband got the short rib and it was exquisite. It was sweet, savory and beautifully plated too. You can't go wrong with whatever your mood for the night is, both drink and food-wise. Needle and Thread has had my eye for as long as I've been in Seattle and I was finally able to check it out. When you walk into Tavern Law you may or may not be approached by one of their employees. Say that you want to see if Needle and Thread are open and then pick up the phone and ask if they have any open seats. If there are, open the door, walk up the stairs, and you'll stumble upon a small speakeasy. There is no drink menu so don't even try to ask for one. They ask you what you like and what you don't like as well as any allergies. Tell them if you prefer something dry, sweet, or anything in between based on your current mood. Then based on what you say they will take the creative liberty to make you something that you'd like to the best of their ability based on what you told them. I told my bartender Daniel that I liked strong and dry drinks like the old fashioned. I also told him I don't like ginger and I don't like drinks with lots of carbonation. He went into his lab and made me something amazing. He made my friend's drink as well and that was also really good. After we got our drinks we tried it to try to guess what was in it before he told us the ingredients. It was super fun and chill and a great atmosphere. This is such a unique and amazing bar concept! Note that if you do a walk up (no reservation) you might be only able to order one drink per person! This happens when they are busy and there are people who made reservations. I'd definitely recommend making recommendations, especially with any party size over three. This place has gone downhill over the years. They no longer start you off with a glass of Prosecco and the whole experience feels very transactional. Reservations are extremely hard to get now so we booked a spot a week in advance to bring a friend who was visiting from out of town. The bartender came over and asked us what we liked and took some notes. We got our drinks and they were good but not mind blowing. Mine ended up being like a floral amaretto sour. After getting our drinks, the bartender never came back to check on us. It took the full 90 minutes for 1 drink, which is slow but I was also thankful for since it was $25 (after tax and tip) and there are better places in Seattle for a cocktail. After you make reservation in advance. You step inside and pick up the rotary phone. An operator will pick up ask for reservations and they will let you in and you will go up a spiral staircase where there is a 1st and 2nd floor dining area with 5 tables. Now what makes this a gem is that there are no menus for cocktails drinks. These master mixologists ask what flavors you like and they curate a drink from scratch on the spot based on your tastes! You have to walk through tavern law to get to the phone to call up to needle and thread. As soon as you walk In the door you will be greeted by the biggest ASSHOLE bouncer in the world. TIP: make sure you have your ID Once your past captain asshole then you go over to the phone and it rings up stairs to needle and thread where you tell them your name and what time your reservation is. If they are ready for you then they will let you up! Walking through the vault door up the stairs through the curtain is actually kinda cool. Nice little vibe. When you get upstairs it's not open seating. You have a assigned place and hope to god you get a good one. They are very pushy and kinda rude about how they seat you and where. Ok no worries your seated now let's eat and drink!! The server does a nice job of explaining to you how everything works in case it's your first time. No cocktail menu and a nice food menu where actually everything sounds good!! Drinks are 16-18$ a piece, but really more like 20$ a piece because they add on 20% gratuity no matter how large your group is. If you know what cocktail you want you should just order that. Don't let them create something because if it sucks and it can you still just paid 20$ for it. We ordered 6 drinks. 4 out of 6 were classic drinks and they were great. They definitely can make the classics right. The other two drinks were there own creations based on what we told them we liked. One was good the other was garbage We had the smoked Mac and cheese with the pork belly and it was amazing. I could eat that everyday. So the equation for needle and thread would be (1/2 service) + (3/4 quality) = (2 x price) As you can see the equation doesn't add up here. Would I recommend this place? The Needle and Thread is a "hidden" speakeasy in Capitol Hill that everyone should visit. This is not for drop-ins, you should make sure you make a reservation and arrive on time. When you arrive, there is a bar on the first floor with a phone you need to call to call the elevator that will take you to the second floor.
