And then we went to the cool chairs in the back. My boyfriend got scared when we got interrogated for what to drink. Quite delicious. Really tell them what u want. Otherwise dealers choice works too. WHAT A SPEAKEASY! From walking in through a "secret" door to the prohibition style pictures on the wall and the attic style seating area, this place is an EXPERIENCE! The drinks are so freaking yummy and creative! You tell the server what you like and don't like, and then they come back with something that fits that. It's as easy as telling them your preferred alcohol and flavor profile. Drinks are a standard $21 each regardless of what you get (apart from the price difference in mocktails). It is super nice that the money you put down for the reservation goes towards your final check. We did not get to try their food but the menu had a lot of options. The space is super small so you NEED a reservation but the vibe is immaculate and intimate. The staff was so sweet and they have a bunch of stuff made in house which makes it extra unique. read more

God I love this place. I literally don't have a bad thing to say about it besides the fact that parking in caphill sucks in general. The staff is knowledgeable, and I had the best version of an espresso martini that I've had in my life. The food was great too! The door is literally from an old bank safe. Simply climb up the stairs and you will be treated to the speakeasy era. The furniture, decor, and glassware all match together with the theme. This bar does not have a drink menu - in fact, you create your cocktails based on flavor preferences and spirits. Servers walk around asking for preferences and flavor profiles while diligently notating your response on mini cards. The bartender works with the preferences and creates a cocktail matching the description. The whole process seems like magic. Simply sit back and enjoy the craft cocktails served over rocks in classy glassware. They do have a simple food menu (which is also available at Tavern Law). I recommend the popcorn chicken, charcuterie plate, and chocolate cake. The atmosphere is quite relaxing and conversations seemed to last longer over customized cocktails. Everything about the speakeasy was great with the exception of the expense. I understand speakeasies cost more but when it cost you no less than $24 per drink plus a 20% tip, which is already added your paying $29 for a drink and being a speakeasy, ordering some drinks such as an old-fashioned tend to be smaller drinks. 4 drinks and some cheese and tomato cost us about $150. I had a great experience here with some friends on a Friday night. Their bartender definitely knows what they're doing. There is no drink menu, only bespoke cocktails that are custom-mixed depending on what kind of drink you tell the server you're looking for. The space is immaculately designed, not too loud and not too quiet, and the staff are friendly. Getting in is a whole experience -- the bouncer downstairs at Tavern Law was so deadpan he almost seemed angry, but calling on the rotary phone and opening the door of the safe to get upstairs to the speakeasy was so fun. The drinks were very good, but my first drink was supposed to be creamy (with something like dairy or egg white) and was not at all, and my second drink was intensely smoky with a strong tobacco flavor which I was not a fan of. I didn't realize this place was reservation only (had just heard of a cool speakeasy by word of mouth). I walked in and was asked by the barista, "How did you get in here?" I answered that I had just opened the door and walked up, and she stated, "Sorry, you have to leave." I'm sorry, but this was a classless response. Have the kindness or at least professionalism to say, "Sorry, this is reservation only." I love to give people the benefit of the doubt, but she was pretentious and rude. I made an reservation online and it worked fine. Tavern law was very empty. The speakeasy was not busy on a Wednesday night as well. I liked the ambience but tbh I didn't like the idea of having a cocktail made specifically to you based on your preferences. As introverted person, I still like to have a menu, it was kind of overwhelming to tell my likes and dislikes flavors and etc. I didn't like the end result that much based on how it costs. Food options are not interesting but I guess we are not there to eat. Staff are really nice though and there's a flavor wheel at the table that can help you with selecting your items for cocktail. read more

Drinks/Ambience - 4 stars Service - 2 stars It's hard to give service 2 stars, the person checking me in was great, the waiter I had at needle and thread was great and the bartender who made my friend and my drink was awesome at explaining why they made us the drinks they did. However, when we had to dial the phone to enter Needle and Thread, the person letting us in (she was the only woman working upstairs that evening) was really rude. I don't think I've had that kind of service in a long time. It was our first time coming here so we had no idea that they had to push a button for us to get up, so we accidentally let it close on the first instance. The second time it never opened (the waitress downstairs saw this and can attest), the third time all I got once I dialed was "REALLY? Really? You can't open the door?" I was shocked; obviously I didn't mean to not open it and already felt not great for having to call a third time and maybe she was having a bad day but it really set a negative tone on my experience. I'm not entirely sure if I will come back which is a shame because the experience is so cool, but the service from her clouded over both the service from the other staff and drinks we had. When we got up there a couple of the other customers were looking at us, perhaps she was loud enough they had heard her as it's not a big space or she had talked to them about us, who knows. Came here with two others - all excited to try the speakeasy vibe. Made a reservation about a week ahead of time. Love the concept. They take notes on your drink preferences, flavors, liquor, garnishes, etc. Then the bartender makes your drink! When they come back they give you a thorough description of what went in, etc which is always interesting to hear. The ambiance is quiet, darker side. You can also order food/snacks/dessert if you like. Now what went wrong that I gave it 2 stars...for starters, the drinks were okay, nothing that seemed supremely unique or blew me out of the water. I've had better drinks off a menu at other bars. On top of that, the service was terrible. When we arrived, there were not that many other groups - maybe 2? Took a long time to get our first drink. Then took a long time to get our second round in. Waited maybe 20 minutes after putting in the order before the bartender came over to try and specify that we were ordering 2, not 3 drinks since there were 3 people. Meaning he had not started on them yet! In the total time we were there which was almost 2 hours, we had ONE drink each. I'm not sure if it was because we were sat at a table in the corner or what, maybe we would have gotten better service at another location, but it really was a disappointing experience for all of us. On top of all this, they charged us for an extra dessert we didn't order. By that time we were really just trying to leave and didn't even bother trying to ask for a correction since that probably would have taken another 20 minutes. This is one of the best cocktail experiences I have had in a while! Needle and Thread is a speakeasy, so to speak. The atmosphere is so unique and feels like 20's prohibition era! It is hidden inside Tavern Law and I highly recommend making reservation weeks in advance. It's not a spot where you can just drop by and have a drink but perhaps Tavern law is. My husband and I decided to go for it once covid precautions starting coming down and we were so thrilled we went. 9 PM is a late reservation but it worked out since it wasn't too busy at the time. We were seated nearly immediately and were greeted by our bartender/waitress promptly. They will ask you liquor preferences, herbs, flavors, aversions, etc., and make a drink with that in mind. Highly suggest thinking it through before letting them know what your preference is since I wasn't and felt like I was stumbling on what I truly wanted. The food was complementary to the drinks but not overwhelmingly memorable. We ordered a charcuterie board, which was placed on disposable trays and appeared more cheap than what we definitely paid for... The drinks were definitely the main event! My husband got a super unique bourbon cocktail with a smokey vanilla aspect to it! All drinks are custom made and are $15/drink. The food is up to the task of fitting in with customized drink orders. The macaroni & cheese (with pork belly) is amazing, and the salmon bites are to die for! But the drinks will always steal the show. What do you want? Think of anything. Any setting. Memory, dream, abstract idea... Just describe what you want out of your drink... And they make it for you. It's that simple! As an example, one of my orders was: I wanna feel like Im sitting in an oversized velvet/mahogony chair in an old study with my only lightsource the roaring fire infront of me. In my hand is a caramel colored drink. Give me that drink! And they'll write down the resulting recipes if you want. (We have a stack after 3 visits). Upon our arrival, we were notified that they did not have a drink menu, but instead they took notes on our likes, dislikes, any allergies we may have & created drinks on the spot based on our answers. My friend & I were blown away with the level of thought and creativity put into each drink. Each time a drink was brought out to us, the bartender explained what exactly they put into the drink - this made it a personalized experience that I greatly appreciated. My friend is vegan & our servers were very knowledgeable on their selections within the bar. I would recommend this spot to anyone who is open to having such a unique drinking experience. I already enjoyed my time at the Tavern Law, so I wanted to find out what is all the hype about this speakeasy. It is very limited space and so you have to make a reservation. What you get in return is a very personable one on one customized drink experience. The drinks were amazing and very creative. However with 4 drinks and little tidbits of almond dish, it was about 107 dollars. It seems little pricey to me. I think about my favorite speakeasy in NYC and the price just seems little high. Admire how they carry such a mind boggling variety of bitters, liquors, liqueurs, etc. from around the world! It's really such a brilliant craft to see how they come up with personalized cocktails just based on a description from you and you can make it however detailed or brief you like. But the devils in the details and so I went prepared this time with what exactly I want in my cocktails and they nailed it!!! It's an actual speakeasy which I really love - you have to dial a number on a phone in tavern law and then the hosts open a door for you to go upstairs. The ambiance is great - dimly lit, cozy, but chic as well. It's fully bespoke so no drink menu but there is a food menu available. The bartenders did a fantastic job making a couple of drinks based off my preferences. My only small critique is that they reminded us of the time limit like 5 times, which felt like a bit much. Who knew that Tequila and chocolate go together? By now, you have all heard the hype. This once secret spot is not so secret anymore. But I can tell you that without a doubt it's as good as ever. We arrived at Tavern Law for our 8:00 reservations then scanned the room for the metal vault door and spotted the phone and called upstairs. We were immediately buzzed inside and headed up stairs past all the vintage naked lady photos. Our bartender came right over and greeted us and since there are no drink menus he just asked what kinds of drinks we were in the mood for. My wife had ripped out a page from an in-flight magazine and showed him a gin based concoction to which he replied he can do, but had a few "surprise twists" that he thought she may like. I wanted a tequila based drink, he then says "did you know that tequila and chocolate go together?' No, I did not. But I was intrigued and let him get to work. Like the other reviews mention, if you are in a rush this place is not for you. The bartenders here are highly skilled and take their time crafting each drink to perfection. I watched as our Mixologist expertly added each ingredient and made sure they would compliment each other to perfection. How did our drinks turn out? AMAZING! I love the setting and peaceful surroundings, it's a great place to have a nice conversation and unwind.. This is the perfect place to kick off the evening. Seating is very limited so reservations are highly recommended. But if you happen to find yourself at Tavern Law, it won't hurt to pick up the phone and see if they let you in. read more

Cute little speakeasy above the bar in Tavern Law. Use the phone beside the innocuous looking old timey door at the back of Tavern Law. When they tell you it's okay to come up the door will unlatch and you'll follow the trail of risqué nudes on the wall up into a candlelit room. We arrived here shortly after opening one evening to find it completely empty - I was excited to sit in one of the many unique antique chairs and mismatched tables but we were instructed to sit wedged at the back corner of the bar. I thought this was odd since we were the only ones there. I imagined they had reservations that would fill the rest of the room by the time we got our food and drink - but this was not the case. We sat squished in the corner on barstools without back support the entire time the room remained empty (at its busiest, there were 2 other couples in there with us, one of which was seated at a table with chairs and the other seated on the long end of the bar. I'm not sure how they choose to seat people but if the room is empty it would be better to let small groups of people choose where to sit. If the idea is to not provide a welcoming an environment then they hit the nail on the head! The food we had was good, as were the bartender's choice cocktails, but at $14-$16 each I expect to feel like a welcome patron. I have back pain and sitting upright on a barstool without support for any longer than 20 minutes is a struggle for me. They definitely need better bar stools and could use a genuine smile once in awhile like their downstairs counterparts. read more

Needle and Thread is a little speak easy on top of Tavern Law. It has a very intimate feel and has its charm as an old speak easy during prohibition. This place is unique because there are no drink menus. The server will ask you a series of questions and will concoct a drink to your taste. My server started with "Do you prefer light or dark?" If you like it fruity and sweet, or very strong, be sure to tell them. My three guest loved their drink but I didn't. I suppose i was not detailed enough with my preferences but 3/4 is a good outcome. If you're hungry, A limited food menu can be ordered from downstairs. When you enter Tavern Law, there will be a phone next to a bank vault like door. The bartender from upstairs will answer your call and tell you when to come upstairs. The ambiance is very quiet, classy, and intimate. It is dim lit with candles on tables and corners. Seating is limited which is why making a reservation can be so difficult and parties can stay for up to two hours. It is a nice place for a date or to catch up with very close friends. Reservations have to be made by leaving a voicemail and you must wait around all day for them to call you back. If you do not pick up, the confirmation is not set, and you will have to call them back again. If it is after 2pm, there is no chance for a same day reservation. Guests can make reservations up to one week in advance and as a fair warning, do not expect them to be polite over the phone. It is definitely something to try at least once especially with out of town guests. It was a nice experience but a little overpriced and I do not see myself visiting this place often. read more

The entrance to this place is inside Tavern Law! I spent forever looking for it and then gave up. And as I was at the bar In tavern law I realized the entrance is by the wall, you have to pick up a phone and request entry with your party size. Once entering through a dark heavy door we find ourselves in a small cozy upstairs with fancy couch chairs and round tables. They seat you with a menu that basically says we don't have a menu. The bar is filled with a mess of bottles some recognizable and some barely even passing as alcohol. No rhyme or reason to their stocking but it doesn't matter as the bartenders figure out your preferences then craft a product catered to you. Definitely a cool place to learn about mixology. read more

I've been here a number of times. Each time is more disappointing than the last in terms of their drinks. The drinks are honestly "Meh" and are very similar to other speakeasies. Service: The service is always great. If you want to get a table, you better make reservations in advance. I've come in with a group of 4 around 11pm on a Friday night and they still had room at the bar. Ambiance: This place has a true speakeasy feel. In order to gain access, you go into Tavenr Law and go to the old fashioned looking phone in the back on the wall. You lift the receiver and they'll ask you how many and if you have a reservation. Then they'll buzz you in thru the door next to the phone. They don't give you a menu in order to be more secretive which I appreciate in relation to the speakeasy era, really gives it a speakeasy kind of vibe. They'll ask you what type of liquor you like and how you like it. Price: The price can be shocking. Typically drinks here are pretty pricey. I got one drink here and after tax and gratuity (which they automatically tack on and I think is ludicrous) it came up to a little over $22. They slapped on a $12.50 service charge for 4 people last time I came which includes one person who didn't get a drink. Other speakeasies/bars may be more forgiving on your wallet but I guess if you want the full speakeasy experience and are willing to pay for it, swing on by! read more

I visited Needle and Thread about six months ago while visiting Seattle, but I haven't stopped thinking about it since. Other "bespoke" custom cocktail bars in LA have not lived up to the experience I had here! It was clear from the jump that the bartenders were very knowledgeable and passionate about mixology; I would recommend highly for cocktail enthusiasts, but also for people who are just willing to try something new. Every drink that came to our table was one of a kind and perfectly suited to the person who ordered it. They were even kind enough to make pride-themed drinks since we were visiting during pride week! Next time I find myself in Seattle, I will definitely be making a reservation here. read more

I've been to both Needle and Thread and Tavern Law a couple times. The experience has generally been good. The Needle and Thread speakeasy environment is fun, and the bartenders are knowledgeable. They encourage a conversation for every drink order, and carefully explain what you're getting. Unfortunately, tonight I only got one drink, because that's the number of times the bartender stopped by our table for the whole hour and twenty minutes we were there. Reservations are normally limited to about an hour and fifteen minutes. We considered trying to extend, but by that point, we were tired and just wanted to be elsewhere. As a side note, the bar was not understaffed. The three bartenders there were about the max that the space could accommodate. Normally I'd take it in stride and leave feedback with my tip, but at the heart of the issue is the fact that Needle and Thread charges an auto-gratuity. I expect a higher level of service at that point. read more
