What a disappointment. We have been stopping in Redding on our drive to Oregon, as we have for many years, and Nello's Place was our favorite go-to after a ten hour drive. Not any more. To start, seems that the restaurant was especially dark and gloomy, perhaps an attempt at some evening atmosphere, which was not working for us. Next, after inquiring about their Gluten Free options, e.g. GF pasta, to find out that there was nothing available. For crying out loud, go to Safeway and check out the pasta isle. For a place that specalizes on Italian food, not having a GF pasta option is really, really sad. Maybe I am spoiled by all of the Italian restaurants in Southern California that are sensitive to dietary needs and have GF options. Not this place. What made things worse is we ordered the special table-side Cesar Salad (for two) that they are know for. Remind you, I just asked the waiter about their GF options. During the table-side prep, I was not asked about the croutons, which I found strange and then I found out why; apparently the table next to us also ordered this same Cesar, so they were prepping for two tables as a time-saver and thus were not willing to make this special table side for us without croutons,. Yes, a ton of ground-up croutons scattered through the salad; I pecked at bits and parts and then gave up. Okay, to be fair, my wife who is not having GF issues was satisfied with her meal and the dessert was acceptable. The wine selection was limited, but we were able to pair up a bottle of Italian red wine with the meal. I am extremely disappointed at how lazy the staff and management has become, and playing 'dumb' to save time for the salad was the final straw. This was the last time we will have dinner there. W go there at least once a month and it isn't inexpensive for a party of five or six each time we go! First, the air conditioning was out of service but we were not notified until we were seated! This place came highly recommended by my sister. So I made an online reservation and never heard back to have a confirmation. So I tried again the next day. Still nothing. So I called and was told literally this by a very unfriendly and disinterested sounding woman than answered after putting me on hold. "Yeah when you register online it goes directly to the restaurant and unfortunately they're too busy at the restaurant to call people back to confirm reservations" Why on earth would you have an online reservation system that isn't used but leads customers to think (obviously) that it would be. My fiancé and I were going to go here as an early valentines as we never get a babysitter and time out for a date night. We both work over valentines and our babysitter is already set up. I just had dinner at Nello's for the first time and was very impressed. I LOVED the atmosphere. Nice dim lighting, the employees are dressed to impressed, murals on the walls, full bar, etc. They start you off with bread and then a plate of antipasti. I chose the salad with my meal and my fiancé chose the minestrone soup. The salad was made table side and comes with shrimp, which I held off since I am allergic to fish. Both were good but next time I'll get the soup because not getting the shrimp on the salad made it a little boring. They offered fresh cheese for both which was great. I had the Manicotti and my fiance had the Chicken Marsala. We both loved our dishes. They also have great coffee! We took advantage of their check in deal and had the dessert of the day... It was some sort of chocolate cake. And let me tell you, it was the BEST "some sort of chocolate cake" I have ever had! Best thing of the night hands down. This is a place to come and spend an evening...I wouldn't recommend coming if you're in a rush or on a time limit. My husband surprised me by taking me out on a Friday after work to have dinner here. It was my first time visiting and walking in I knew I was in for authentic Italian cuisine. There really is not anything that comes close in Redding. I had the linguine and clam sauce with tiramisu for dessert. Absolutely glorious. And the service was amazing even though the place was packed. There was a large party next to us with kids running around but the tables are set up so that we were not bothered by them. 100% will be back. read more

Walking into Nello's is like walking onto the set of Goodfellows. This place screams New Jersey 1982 and I'm pretty sure it hasn't been renovated since then. Is this a bad thing? Certainly not, but the food could improve a bit. Besides the decor, what you'll get here are classic Italian American dishes. Think deep fried, heavy marinara, and gloopy cheeses. Again, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if fresh light dishes are what you're looking for than don't come here. My calamari was great, not overcooked and perfectly tender. My uncle ordered crab cakes and insisted I take a bite and unfortunately I regretted it -greasy and not-so-fresh tasting. My chicken parmesan was good, but my pene pasta was limp and the broccoli overcooked. I received a free spumoni ice cream for dessert when I checked in (who doesn't love spumoni). People in Redding love this place and frankly, I don't get it. You need to make reservations, because this place is always hopping. Be prepared to go from bright day to dark when you enter, because it's super dim in there. A couple of more notches on the dimmer and it would be an "eating in the dark" experience. We had a party of five, made reservations a week ahead and they were still a little stunned that we showed. They placed us at a table for four that was tiny and rapidly worked to set another place. The waiters are all dressed in black pants, white collared shirts and black vests. They all look really nice. Unfortunately, the server we had was not having any banter, but he was polite enough. We had a show to go to that evening, so we weren't about the whole Old World experience and that was our fault, because you should go there to have a leisurely meal because they work at a leisurely pace. He took our drink order and was efficient. The drinks are good, but don't go there looking for something froufrou. It's serious old school cocktails - Manhattans and Sidecars. You will totally get a side-eye if you ask for a mojito like I did (I know, I know - I deserved it). They bring out warm bread and butter and a little antipasto platter that has a LOT of tuna, a smattering of black, seedless olives, salami and cheese. I wasn't a big fan of the antipasto plate, but it's a nice little something to get you through until dinner arrives. They make the Caesar salad table side. One time I visited Nello's the server was much more interactive and made a show of the making of the salad, this guy was down to business. I admit, this salad is the bomb. Totally fresh and tasty. I reserve all my stars for the salad. If you opt for their house salad, it comes with bay shrimp and they grate blue cheese over the salad if you wish. Dinner comes and the portions are huge. I'm glad I split my seafood fettuccini. It's not the place for you if you are in some sort of diet. The food is rich and plentiful. I went with something that was easy to split and hard to screw up. It was fine, but I'm not writing home about it. The real gem of this place is the dessert, but ain't nobody got time for that tonight, we've got someplace to be. Our server went MIA and we asked someone else for our check and then we waited and waited and waited. This was the worst part of the meal. When our server finally reappeared, we had to ask for the check again. Zero communication happening there. They leave carnations for the ladies and when they package your leftovers, they Saran Wrap them so they don't leak out of the box which is totally thoughtful. We were looking for a decent place to eat in Redding and found Nello's on Yelp! We were allowed a reservation on short notice on a Saturday night so thank you very much for being so accommodating. Upon entry the restaurant was nicely lit with a beautiful bar. White table cloths over slightly dated furnishings illustrate that this place has been around since the 80's. We were served some amazing sourdough bread shortly after being seated. They do not have basalmic vinegar but were offered olive oil with garlic instead....somehow this never made it to our table. :( Our family put away four loaves anyways. We ordered a bottle of Chianti that was pretty light and flavorful but the virgin strawberry daiquiris for the kids were uber tasty. They had an amazing deal of antipasta, soup/salad, entree, and coffee for $15 so we all chose that. The antipasta consisted of tuna, salami, provolone, olives, and peppers. Only the olives excited me about this course. The salad came with bay shrimp, lettuce, and olive oil, but this is when something amazing occurred. The waiter stopped by with a HUGE block of Danish blue cheese that he grated on top. The blue cheese was full of flavor and really got my motor hummin! A couple of our party members opted for the soup (suckers) and the minestrone was good but nothing memorable. We ordered 4 different entrees: fettuccini Alfredo, spaghetti with meatballs, cheese ravioli, and manicotti. I felt the spaghetti and meatballs were the best of the bunch followed by the manicotti. Plenty of tasty meatballs and the sauce was flavorful. The manicotti was pretty standard. I wasn't excited over the fettuccini Alfredo but my father was raving about it. I personally couldn't place the unique flavor that was in it but I think my version tastes much better. ;). The cheese ravioli wasn't all too interesting but my daughter ate it up happily. We finished the meal with cherries jubilee and it was quite delicious. We had the restaurant staring as they make it table side and flames are shooting out of the pan. We also received a free chocolate cake with our yelp check in and man was it rich. It's more like a slice of fudge! I really liked it but would love a glass of milk with it. If you want to find one of the few hidden gems in Redding, ca, you must go to Nellos! In traveling the world it is rare that one can say they have had a impeccable meal. Im saying it folks! There were three of us at the table last night and we each tried a different fish dish. Our meal began with a small plate of antipasti that had a yummy albacore salad,peppers, cheese and meats. Second course was a choice of soup or salad. The fresh green salads are tossed table side and include the option of a grating of some beautiful premium blue cheese. One member of the party opted for the Minestrone and she said it was home made and delicious. The soup or salad is served with fresh sourdough bread and butter. The third course was a delicate small dish, of pasta, They offer three choices, we all choose the Homemade pasta stuffed with spinach and chicken covered in a flavorful house made marinara. It was delicious. The Fourth course took a while to come to the table but that was fine as it gave us time to chat and let the first three courses settle. We ordered the grilled halibut and Salmon, These are butchered in house and were cooked to perfection. (We each ordered the sauce for the fish on the side which I recommend, The butter, herb and caper sauce was very tasty, but rich and a little went a long way) , Fresh steamed vegetables and a little more hand made rotini pasta in that amazing marinara. (I personally would suggest to all forgo the rotini, I found that while tasty, its was a bit too much pasta for that large of a meal. You can opt for extra steamed veggies instead of the rotini, ...especially if you want to save what room you have left for the fifth course...AND YOU DO trust me...) For our final course, We each had a espresso that was served traditional style with a slice of Lemon rind, YUMMY. This establishment uses premium beans and a old style machine... a really good espresso. There was a choice between a really flavorful spumoni ice cream or the house made cheesecake. Oh GOD in HEAVEN that cheesecake!!! Deceptively light, flavorful cheesecake I have EVER, dare I say EVER? had... The slice is really big and despite the three of us nibbling, I took most of it home for another day, so perhaps a couple could share one slice? Its a do not miss in my opinion. I do want to say one thing. Don't go there expecting a fancy decor and yes this place is in a funky old strip mall. The restaurant is 40 years old and seriously trapped in a time warp. I agree it looks like its straight out of a mobster movie and could stand a make over. But PLEASE, please do not let that turn you away, You are not going there for the decor, You are going there for the quality made classics of traditional Italian cooking and a staff that will treat you like gold and put on a bit of a show table side. Folks I am telling you this food will transport you back to Italy... They have a killer sauce done right. Go hungry cause the portions are big and the prices are way too reasonable. We went there for my 67th birthday. We made reservations for 6:30 on a Friday night. We arrived 5 minutes early to find the parking lot overflowing. Cars were actually parked in places not meant for parking. After we walked in, we were told it would be a 20 minute wait despite the fact that we had reservations. So we elected to sit at a table instead of a booth. The waiter was friendly and brought us water and our menus. My wife asked for Rose wine but was informed they had none (really?). The restaurant is dimly lit, very loud, and dated, everything looked old. The menus were difficult to read in the dim light. Many patrons were using the light in the phones to read the menu. Smh After we ordered our meals, the waiter brought us bread. Four small slices of dried out French bread. The salads were limp and overdone with dressing. Tasteless The main courses were excellent though. I had shrimp scampi and my wife had Chicken Marsala. Getting my water glass refilled was a challenge. I ordered the seafood linguine and my girlfriend ordered the eggplant parm. The server then came and made the salad at the table. It was a simple salad but the vinegar, sugar and oil ratios were good. The salad was topped with bay shrimp and he offered grated blue cheese. We both really enjoyed both the table service and the simple clean taste of the salads. The food arrived quickly and we were pleasantly surprised by the quality. The red sauce in my linguine was spicy and had good flavor. It was salted just right and had a subtle sweetness that balanced it well. The eggplant parm was crisp and you could taste the flavor of the eggplant. It wasn't overly oily. Overall the chef executed every aspect of the meal well. After dinner they brought my girlfriend a rose and I saw they brought one to every lady who dined at the establishment. A bit cheesy, but I kind of like cheesy and it's clear they are making an effort to stand out. Prices were a bit higher than I expected, but not unreasonably so. This place has very good reviews. When you walk in, place is very dark, a little outdated. They bring an antipasti to table (small plate with cheese, salami, olives, pepperoncinis and tuna) they also bring some table bread and butter. Most meals include a soup or salad. Salad is a garden salad with shrimp. And pasta portions are pretty big. We ordered alfredo, but flavor was not there. Also tried chicken parmigiana, chicken was good, but again, pasta was lacking flavor. We visited Nello's on Saturday night (7/31) and were very happy they had reopened after kitchen remodel. we were not informed air conditioning had quit working 10 minutes before our reservation time. Food was good as always, but horribly hot and uncomfortable dining experience. We should have received an apology for lack of air conditioning and been told upon our arrival of the issue before being seated. When I inquired about air conditioning issue, told by our waiter, you should feel how hot it is in the kitchen. We will return as we enjoy the atmosphere and food, however, will inquire if air conditioning has been fixed! read more

I have been going here for 15 years, and nothing has changed about the place in that time. I mean that literally. The experience and the menu are exactly the same. For many businesses, this would be a bad thing. For Nello's Place, it's the secret ingredient that makes it all come together. Some restaurants have to work constantly to keep things exciting, but Nello's is packed every weekend, because guests know what they're going to get from the moment they walk in the door... and they like it. My recommendations: make a reservation. Definitely order the shrimp salad (it comes with fabulous bleu cheese) or the Caesar, made at the table. For entrees, I suggest the Chicken Rossini or the Veal. And make sure you don't skip dessert: the zabaglione is better than you'll find anywhere, including Little Italy in New York. Unfortunately I can't in good conscience recommend a restaurant where the food looks better than it tastes, and the food does not look that good. For our party of four all of the pasta was undercooked even for al dente. The chicken fettuccine Alfredo was poor and extremely bland. It felt like someone legitimately forgot to add salt to the food. The only saving grace for this place was the service. Everyone was fantastic, staff was friendly, and communicated well. It is also very puzzling to find so many positive reviews it's hard to believe that I went to the same place as some of these people. We had a great meal at Nello's Place. It is an old-school Italian restaurant with some quant touches, and maybe a little dark inside until your eyes become accustom to the interior. It has an extensive menu of most every Italian dish I could think of, except they don't have gluten free pasta or pesto. Other than that, the veal piccata and mesquite grilled filet were amazing. Let me start by saying I will never eat here again. We were staying at the Hope Inn which recommended Nello's. I checked Yelp and saw they listed as fine dining which was just what we were looking for. I should have done some more investigation before patronizing. We were greeted cordially and seated promptly by a server wearing a black vest white shirt and bowtie. The room was dark and intimate with white table cloths as a fine dining establishment should be. We thought this is good because we will get a very relaxing and well prepared meal. Then it all begins. A server approaches us and says hey how you doin? Thinking he may be trying to give a New York Italian impression we just smiled and said fine. When asked if we would like something to drink I responded I would like a red blend if you have it. He said I have a Chianti Cabernet sauvignon blend. I had never heard of such a thing so I said OK I'll try it. He brought it to the table and it was chianti. But that's OK. After looking at the menu I saw that their house specialty was escargot. I love a well prepared escargot so I ordered it as an appetizer. What I got is what you see in the photo I took. Not at all well-prepared just snails thrown on a plate with some sauce that had so much garlic in it, it was overwhelming. Next we ordered our entrées. Donna ordered the salmon which was the house special this evening. I ordered another house specialty according to the menu steak Diane. Steak Diane is made at the table and is cooked with a sauce of Demi-glace, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, salt and pepper, Beef or chicken stock and what other specialties of the house there are. The meat that is normally beef tenderloin, is somewhat flattened to about a half inch thick and then cooked in a skillet at the table adding the sauces and then some cognac which is fired off for display as well as flavor. The meat is then cooked in the sauce the rest of the way to however the customer orders it. If what you see in the picture below resembles in anyway a steak Diane that would be a great surprise to me. First the waiter brought a paper thin piece of meat, put some pepper in the skillet then the meat on top and cooked it while constantly scraping it with a spatula. He added some broth and some chopped onion and something else I do not know what it was which made it look like it does. It was disgusting. I could go on and on and on about our experience but I don't really wanna waste my breath on this. Bottom line is if you eat there eat at your own risk. $42 for a steak Diane and getting something like this is repulsive. read more

Food was just okay, salad was wet, really wet, overpowering the green, the mid course looks like a puke, tasted just okay but at least house made the pasta sauce and cheese, my gf think tasted okay but i think its below average. Main course, she order mushroom sautéd scollops which they cut half of the each one scallop and made it seems like a good amount, the mushroom was very buttery and oily which isn't professionally cooked, my mother can make it better and i can too, they dont make their own desserts which is a bummer, when our main course came to us, looks like someone went to a buffet and put food on the plate for us, cost $152 total without adding the tips, and they have a tradition that each lady will get a rose after dinning, but my gf didn't get one, also there's a tall skinny guy with yellow short hair, very annoying, trying to make jokes with many employees in the middle of the restaurant and he's loud, must be a relative from the owner or manager. Our waiter Taylor was great, answered our questions and nice guy to talk to, honest about the whats made in house and whats not. If you price your food higher price, then please make your own pasta but they dont make their own pastas and many thing just from Cisco, very disappointing. Not sure where to start...what happened tonight (10/30/21) was terrible. Towards the end of our dinner we could hear arguing and profanity coming from the kitchen. As we were leaving there was a physical altercation between an adult kitchen staff member and a teenage waiter, in front of the building! We were told not to worry because this happens on occasion. We have been going to Nello's for over 20 years and in the last few years we have noticed the service and food have declined. We continue to go there because it's nostalgic for our family and we want to support our local businesses. This will happen no longer. Jim (owner) you need to get it together! Never should your team members get physical with each other especially in front of your customers. To hear you have been allowing this behavior is a shame. If you don't have the balls to fire them then hire someone who does. Maybe you need to hire some women instead of only men! So disappointing. read more
