I always think the good mark of an ethnic restaurant is how many of its own ethnicity does it attract by way of customers. If you see people of Indian origin in an Indian restaurant, or Mexicans in a Mexican eatery you can be pretty certain the food is 'the genuine article', and tasty with it. Sadly, there was no sign of an Asian face sat at any of the tables here at New China Buffet. No surprise really, the food is the usual mix of disappointing Chinese fayre, fries and pizza (pizza??!!) found at far too many places across the country. I'm sure it fills the desires and bellies of those people looking to simply 'eat big' for a low price, the kind of people who maybe migrate here when Golden Corral or Ponderosa have become too familiar to them. For me though it falls short on almost every level where 'taste' is involved. The food was either too greasy, over sauced or under-heated to be of any repeat interest. (Although much of it repeated on me later in the day) Plus, it has the whole Newport Pavilion problems working against it. A poorly designed development which completely fails to cater for pedestrians and puts drivers in peril thanks to all of the vehicular exits being located on blind and/or sharp bends. I came here pretty much because it was my first day in Cincinnati and I had to go to Target to buy stuff for my apartment. For a Chinese buffet, this place was not all that impressive. The decor is new and nice. The servers were friendly and attentive. Also I think that my lunch (without ordering a soda) was only around $7, so I wasn't all that disappointed. The food was pretty basic for most Chinese buffets. They didn't have anything that really made them stand out from others. I did like the Rose chicken. I also had the chicken and broccoli, the green beans, and some kind of pepper beef thing. I was trying to eat low carb and healthier, so I avoided most of the fried items, as well as the rice and noodles. The dumplings were mediocre. In summary, I wouldn't specifically recommend someone go out of their way to come here, but for the price, I would probably eat here if I were going to Target instead of some fast food joint. read more

Pretty decent food for price..and it was convenient, and quick. I placed a carry out order and it was ready within 15 minutes!! And they gave me and extra egg roll i got sweet and sour chicken. I'm not picky when it comes to Chinese takeout, but it was tasty. read more

Yesterday as a treat, two friends and myself drove from Milford Ohio down to this place to hang out and try out this highly recommended place. 1) I loved the design of this place, it was simple yet elegant and the place was clean, cozy, everything you'd want to set the mood in a restaurant. 2) The staff were perfect; professional, helpful, and had a wonderful attitude, very impressed! 3) Not too many Chinese restaurants that offer buffets have a wide range of variety, but this place did, and it was all excellent! 4) The food was hot, not sickeningly sweet like so many other places do, and I highly recommend this place to people because seriously this restaurant knows what they're doing. My only complaint in this experience was we are the type of people who want to eat slowly, enjoy the atmosphere and talk. All three of us noticed out of the corner of our eye after an hour that the waitress and a gentleman in what we could only assume was a manager, literally puppy-guarded our area to silently let us know to hurry up. Are we as customers not permitted to relax, let our food digest, and enjoy your restaurant? We always tip, and we tip well. The place wasn't crowded so I know they're not struggling to seat people. They need to ease up and let people chit chat for a bit, that's what sit in restaurants are for. Other than that, this place is still amazing, and we'll be back for sure. :) Note: I do understand Cantonese, and its nice to sit in a Chinese restaurant and not hear employees talk shit about American customers. New China Buffet is in my weekly restaurant rotation. The staff are courteous, friendly, fast, and efficient. The building is well maintained and clean. If you're a fan of Chinese food buffets then you'll love the offerings at New China Buffet! The best dishes by far are The Coconut Shrimp and The Rose Chicken! However, everything is pretty tasty and you can't go wrong with whatever dish you choose. If you have kids or picky eaters they also offer some American eats like pizza. I would recommend going for the lunch special so you can get the most bang for your buck. There's also a to go option where you can fill up a box with food from the buffet and if you're typically a person who can only eat a plate or two at a buffet this option might make the most economic sense for you. read more

I rarely come across take out food that motivates me to write a positive review. I was excited to see this restaurant open recently as there is a desperate need for a good Chinese place in Newport. Ive had casual Chinese and for me it was terrible. That being said, I have been to New China Buffet 3 times now. The first time I went for the buffet and the other times was just carry out. The buffet... for me... was not extremely impressive. However, I have received some very good food via takeout. I noticed a lot of the reviews on this place focus on the buffet... I want to encourage people to give this place a chance for takeout. I order this evening and their credit card machine wasn't working.. so they gave me my food for free! That to me is how you get repeat business. Mongolian Beef is excellent! I highly recommend... Hunan chicken was average but hands down better than Casual Chinese. Decided to stop in this place as a change of pace from the usual Chinese buffet we frequent down the road in the old strip mall. I'll be returning there after this visit. The place looks great and the staff was attentive but that is where the good things about this place end. The food was mediocre and they were frequently out of many items during a trip to the buffet. All of this would have been forgivable until I got the check. 2 buffets and 2 waters $23.00. Way too much for food that is not that good. Try the place down the street. I feel sorry for anyone who thinks this is a great Chinese buffet. I am not sure there is such a thing. Any restaurant that serves pudding, shrimp, and pizza (yes pizza) could be said to be over extending it a bit. My tip would be, do not eat here within 1-2 hours of closing. I don't eat buffets often, but when I got the occasional craving for Chinese, I used to enjoy hitting this place up. Granted, buffet food is what it is..but it did the trick. However, my opinion has changed after my experience today. I stopped by to pick up a to-go buffet, which costs around $8. I entered, and the hostess was on the phone the entire time. I got my food--she was still on the phone. I handed her my card, she ran it, and I was on my way. Unfortunately for me, I didn't check my receipt. Later that evening I realized that she had charged me $21.06. I figured--hey, I will call and get this all straightened out. The first phone call started out politely, until I realized that the woman was telling me that not only did they not have an "to-gos" rung up for lunch, the server who rung me out (who, remember, was on the phone the entire time) said that she didn't ring out any to-go orders. Great. I got pretty frustrated and ended up telling her to forget about it. Well, then she called me back. I thought, "She must have realized the mistake and wants to make it right." Well, no. She again accuses me of being dishonest because I gave her "2 different numbers" Initially she asked me for a number, and I said, the credit card number? She said "just the last 4 digits." I assumed she was going to look up the transaction that way. She then asked me for another 4 digit number off the receipt. Apparently, she was asking for the same number, but since I gave two different ones (totally a misunderstanding) I must be shady. I tried to explain to her that it isn't REALLY about the money, now it is more about the fact that she is insulting a customer who (thought not frequent) is loyal. I eventually ended the conversation and couldn't believe the disrespect with which I had just been treated. For me, customer service is an important aspect of any consumer experience. As I told the lady on the phone, (who wouldn't give me her name) I certainly won't be giving them any more of my money. read more

This is my second time visiting here for lunch and the first time was ok so i figured it'd be good the second time around of course i was wrong the fried rice tasted old and cold the white rice was under cooked and ALL of the chicken (sesame etc) was old and hard. I settled for fried chicken and crab Rangoon so I'd get my money worth of food. I will no longer come back to this place. I advise you to choose another Chinese buffet before coming to this one. Truthfully this place did not impress me. Some of the food items were pretty good (specifically the ribs and beef) but other than that it was just kinda...Meh. There is MAJOR food contamination concerns here. Most places will put things like shellfish (specifically for me, shrimp) in one area so you don't have to worry that much. But just about every other buffet pan had shrimp in it. With a buffet where people use the wrong tongs in the wrong dish without thinking this scared me to death. I made it out alright, but I had to pass on quite a few things I would have liked to have tried because they looked contaminated. Their sushi bar for example had tongs that were clearly used for about everything there. Honestly, I'll probably never go back here. It wasn't too bad price wise (about 11 for all you can eat) but when I went back for seconds I realized that I couldn't get anything else because of cross contamination...so there wasn't really a point for seconds. My advice...go somewhere that cares about food safety. read more

It's only ok. I eat out at least 4 times a week because of my job and I am always willing to recognize something special and this place just isn't it. The store is fairly new and looks nice but their sushi is decent but not great and that holds true for most everything else. The things I do like are their Peking duck and their chow mei fun. Their Mongolian grill has a major flaw in that they use very thinly sliced meat (to cook quickly) that turn to dry rubber-like flakes. I eat at the Tokyo Dragon in Alexandria and they use nice large cubes of meat that can be cooked medium/medium-rare (and tender). I took my son to the New China for the second time and he was completely unimpressed. For us the Tokyo Dragon or the new place near Sams Club in Florence is a much better choice. read more

Somehow the husband managed to talk me into coming back here, despite our depressing experience with the food last time. He was in the mood and there are really no Chinese buffets around that we were aware of. While it still wasn't good, it definitely was improved from last time. Some of the better dishes: coconut shrimp, crab legs, salt and pepper chicken, green beans and the mei fun. Sushi is still completely undelectable and the hot and sour soup was really disappointing (despite how easy it is to make it!) A lot of Chinese buffets are crap. New China Buffet is not. In fact, it's one of the better Chinese buffets I've been to. It definitely beats Empire Buffet, which gets a lot of hype. The price for lunch is very reasonable, but a little high for dinner. With a soft drink, it's about $13.50 per person not including tip. The fried dumplings are very good. They have something called Rose Chicken that is very good too. The egg rolls are okay, if not a little greasy. It's really taking a beating on Yelp, but it's pretty good in my opinion. It's not a gourmet restaurant by any means, but for a Chinese buffet, it's got my vote. read more

TERRIBLE. I should have listened when my friends told me this place was bad. I went for takeout today, because I heard that you can get a to-go box, which they weigh to determine the price. I figured I could get a little variety and just enough for tonight's dinner. When i got up to the counter to pay, she didn't weigh anything, but told me it would be $10.48. When I asked, she said the scale was broken, so it would be $10.48 no matter how much i got. So she told me to go fill my containers so i could have leftovers. I have enough food left over for another meal or 2, but will not be saving it- and I am definitely a leftovers type of person. Everything tasted like grease and had no flavor! I have been to this place more than three times with my friends. Both of us are fans of this buffet. We like the roasted duck and pork ribs there. This buffet does have crab legs, but I am so much into that. I like fried rice and fried noodles there too. Also you can order grills meeting your own needs. The location is in New port, and every time we finished the dinner, we'll go to the nearby Target and Kroger for shopping. The other good thing about this buffet is the price of gasoline at the gas station there is relatively cheaper. If you go there, you can find some coupons on the Internet, just type New China Buffet Coupon in the Google Search bar, and you will find some. But I will say that my food has always been fresh, portions so large that for about $10.00, I could eat at least 3-4 times easily from my purchase. It was clean (which is typically my main complaint about buffets) and the food was fresh and had a good variety. Came here for Christmas lunch. Our family is big, consisting of 9 people. We had a limited amount of money and wanted to enjoy a meal together. It was lunch time on Christmas, so we checked the lunch price AND the posted dinner price just to be sure we would have enough cash in case we had to pay dinner prices. We were good. No other prices were posted, just dinner and lunch. We all ordered water to make sure we could cover the cost of dinner prices. As it turns out, when we finished, the price was much higher than the posted dinner price. We didn't have enough money. I understand if the restaurant wants to raise its prices for Christmas lunch, but at least post it or tell the customers before hand. It was very embarrassing.
