Couldn't wait to try this place for dinner after watching several TikTok videos about this "hidden gem" in the heart of Phoenix's near Southside since the 40s. A Chinese restaurant in the hood since the 40s? With the entrance into the kitchen from the back parking lot? Who knew? Well. . . if you grew up in the neighborhood or heard about it through generations of family members, that was this kind of place. Met up with friends to check it out. Ok. First, the food since that was the only redeeming experience. Fabulous, fabulous and plentiful, delicious, and crazy cheap. However, that may explain why everything else about the restaurant was, well, icky. Nice family waitstaff when they did show up. A 50 minute wait for food (which we were warned about by staff), and over half of the 10 tables were filled with families of 5 to 8 adults, teens, children, and crying babies. No air conditioning. No cool back door entrance through the kitchen. The floors were filthy and disgusting like you'd see in a roadside gas station bathroom. People even dropped food and just kicked it aside. WOW! It truly didn't look like the floors had been swept and cleaned in years. Clearly it's about the great food alone. It's a tough area, but with the new light rail being built out front perhaps this may bring progress to the area and restaurant after decades of neglect surrounding it. Many families fill the place very likely because the food is awesome, cheap, and 4 entrees can feed eight people. I'd definitely go back for lunch perhaps one day, but ownership has to clean up. Would love to rate this place on their food. Walked in and waited 5 minutes for a table. Not a big deal, sat down at 1:10pm and they placed two menus on our table at 1:25pm. They never came back. We had a takeout orderlast night. The food was fresh and the portions were alot! The food wasn't seasoned is my only complaint. Maybe because it's not doused with TONS of sodium. For some reason we even had egg drop soup in the order. We actually wanted delivery but it wasn't available, so we walked from our home near by. I think it was too late for delivery. The establishment looks like it is closed down but it's open for takeout only. To pick up your food is weird because there is a sign on the door to call, but the door was unlocked but it's all good. My family has been visiting this place since the 80's This tells you all you need to know, right? But I'll give you more info anyway lololol. First- parking is in the rear or on the street and you enter through the kitchen. Be sure to yell "Hello" as you're passing through. And the restrooms are in the kitchen. Yeah they really are, so try to hold it until you get home heehee. Second- it's a neighbourhood place so don't expect fancy service. The staff is friendly, the music list plays Oldies and the food is nothing out of the ordinary. Third- expect larger portions of food. Outrageously large portions. I promise you, you can't find another restaurant piling on the amounts you'll get here! Bring family. Bring friends. Do NOT bring food and ambiance snobs and those afraid of eating in a neighbourhood setting like this place. Our walnut chicken was perfectly crunchy and not greasy, lo mein was lightly sauced and delicious, Mongolian beef had good flavor, but not a lot of beef. Spring rolls were good and not greasy. The food is hit or miss, most of it is very good however ALL of the meat tastes like it's been reheated and it isn't seasoned or fresh. I went to buy some food at New Garden on 10/18/2024. I have been going there for years but these people are not the original owners. Since the new owner took over this place the good is not the same. I understand that things change when new ownership takes over. I have always ignored how dirty this place is but the food was really good then. As I said I was there last week to pick up my to go order and asked for chili oil and the waitress went to a table, picked up a dish with chili oil, went to the back area (which I could clearly see) then she poured it into a to go container. I told her that I did not want it because someone had used it and it actually had bits of rice in it. I was told that it was all they had because the other batch was not ready yet! Gross, after this incidence after 56 years of eating there I will never be back. It do disgusted me that I just can't go back again. So sad what has happened to this place. We had gone by this place for years without ever thinking to stop in. Then I read the reviews and thought it was worth a shot. This place is awesome! Lots of food. It is fresh and reasonably priced. The large egg rolls are a meal in of themselves. By far the biggest egg roll I've ever had! It is like a chop suey egg roll. King pao beef was full of veggies. And the egg soup was great. A rundown red building on the corner, and you wonder to yourself "Is that it?" And sure enough, yes it is. We went around to the back trying to find parking, and went through the fence opening to the small parking lot in the back. There is one door, and we weren't sure if we could enter and peeked in. It was the kitchen. We back out and started to walk around the building, but a very sweet woman came after us and invited us in. We were led through the kitchen and into the restaurant to wait. The restaurant is definitely run down, but don't let it fool you. The food is fantastic. We ordered the Mongolian beef, House special chicken, crab puffs and some egg drop soup. And they gave us some free spring rolls on the side! The Mongolian beef is perfectly spicy! Just delicious, and such generous portions! The house special chicken was perfect. Not overly sauced so it stayed nice and crunchy, perfectly cooked. The spring rolls were a definite surprise. It has a little hint of ginger and is so yummy. My only critique is that the crab puffs were cheap in the cream cheese, but that's okay bc I don't need those calories anyway. Hahahaha. Definitely give this place a shot. It doesn't look like much from the outside but it's food speaks for itself. My husband and I are sold. read more

I am going to start by saying I take my Chinese good pretty serious and still think Boston has the best around. So after spending time visiting all local bars and traveling we opted out of going out to dinner and getting some Chinese delivery. I ordered our usual- beef and broccoli, orange chicken, pork fried rice, lo main and egg rolls. SO when she asked small or large for the rice and noodle I said large thinking it was gonna be those tiny boxes and boy I was wrong! The guy came with our order about 40 minutes later and we couldn't help but laugh when we saw each item was it a Togo styrofoam box. It was A LOT of food! I wish I knew about the sizing prior- I would of ordered different. Everything was pretty mediocre at best. The beef and broccoli was basically just broccoli with a little bit of super thin shaved beef, the lo main noodles were super dry and the pork fried rice was bland. I've never tried their style of egg rolls before and was not a fan. Luckily they threw in an order of spring rolls that were much better! The restaurant had decent reviews so I defiantly got my hopes up a little. The money and food wasted is disappointing and I wouldn't waste my time or money again. read more

Probably my favorite Chinese restaurant in the Phoenix area, and close to the airport to boot. This is a classic mom and pop, family run shop with incredibly interesting history of good eats just below the surface. The restaurant has been open since the 1940's (!!) and it feels like the same delicious plates we were served have lived through 70+ years of history. This slice of nostalgia alone we thought was worth our stopping by. But then the food came and we knew this would become a frequented spot for all our Phoenix trips. A couple highlights: -Mongolian beef was very well done. The meat is just the right amount of tender and flavor was rich and tasty. -Big egg rolls were an interesting treat and also a bit of a conversation starter. Our waiter helped explain that they've had this on the menu for decades to actually preserve a recipe from the earliest days of Chinese food in the Southwest US. This was my first time coming here and I have to be honest it looked kinda sketchy but give it a chance!!! It was kinda weird because we had to enter through a back door that was connected to the kitchen to enter the dining room ( You seat yourself ). This is one of the places that introduced americanized chinse food to Phoenix. They have been around since i think 1946 is what i was told. They have the basics and more . Well know for there huge servings and burrito size eggrolls which is 2 for 3.50 about the same as getting 6 somewhere else in size. We always get SS chicken and pork fried rice with the GOODIES (green inion and bean sprout added) hung sui gai , house chow mein, and egg flour soup. We alwats end up with more then we can eat and boxes to go. Service is good they changed over ownership but only as a partnership and things stay as good or better.
