I've been coming to this restaurant for years and have always enjoyed the food, which is why this experience was so disappointing. For the first time, I ordered through DoorDash and paid more than I normally would in-store. However, my child's meal did not include a drink, even though the menu clearly says "Kids Meal w/ Drink." I also didn't receive sauces that are usually included with meals, and found out they now charge extra for them. What's frustrating is that there is nothing posted on the menu or online explaining that orders placed through DoorDash are different. If portions or included items change depending on how you order, that needs to be clearly communicated. Paying more and getting less--without any notice--feels misleading. I hope management takes this seriously because this isn't the experience I've had here in the past. read more

One order was with only vegetables and i got a tray full of veggies but about 10 small chunks of chicken and steak...for 17$ that's shitty. I was driving by this restaurant and noticed a number of people going in so I decided to join the crowd. I ordered the chicken hibachi which came full of vegetables including broccoli, carrots, onions and zucchini. The wait was not that long despite being crowded. I liked the fact that my meal was cooked fresh to order. The only reason this is not a 4 star rating was I felt that the chicken portion was a little bit skimpy . Too much rice, not enough protein. The restaurant is located in a shopping plaza so parking isn't an issue. There are several tables and chairs inside of the restaurant to dine in. Drinks, silverware, and sauces are self serve. I have been to this restaurant many times before and have always had good experiences. Today the food wasn't that great. I ordered the shrimp hibachi meal. You get a decent amount of food for the price. The food was served in a decent amount of time. However the rice was gummy and it tasted like it was missing something. The shrimp was good but portions of them were cooked a little too long. The plate is also served with a lot of vegetables such as zucchini, broccoli, carrots, and onions. I ate my meal with white sauce and it was good. If you get more than one serving of it there is a charge. The staff was friendly as usual. It will probably be a long time before I return. read more

I say this for a few reasons: 1) The restaurant is always squeaky clean. Now, if you like getting poisoned by dirty restaurants then be my guest, but as someone who owns a catering business this place is top notch squared away. 2) the food is always fresh and hot. I see complaints about food taking too long. Well, when you cook the food fresh it takes time. One possible solution would be to call ahead. I know that's a difficult concept but it works. 3) the employees are always professional and quick. The owner and his wife are almost always there, and they run a tight ship. 4) food is great. So I ordered from this place a to-go order a spicy salmon roll and spicy tuna roll, I specifically indicated that I want them to add cream cheese, avocado and cucumber, which they did NOT add even though it is showing in the ticket and receipt and even worst the rice taste old and feels old, the salmon and tuna is DEFINITELY NOT FRESH! unfortunately for them they cannot lie about this because I'm a Sushi Chef myself. The Steak and Shrimp Soba noodles with cabbage and carrots were soo good! I just with they added a little more brown sauce to the noodles to keep the moisture throughout. The food was delicious. I ordered the steak and shrimp hibachi. It had a lot of flavor and the white sauce was really good. The only thing I would change is the amount of meat in the hibachi. I honestly ate this place twice in a row, that's how good it is! I got the shrimp hibachi, and to be honest, yea, there's a bunch of veggies. But I just so happen to prefer veggies over meat, so that didn't bother me, but I can understand if a meat eater would feel jiped. Their sauces are delicious, the ginger sauce being my favorite. I made the mistake of trying this New Japan Express after a bad experience several years ago made me write this place off. Time has not improved things one bit. My Hibachi Chicken had a skimpy serving of very overcooked chicken and a bunch of veggies that were cooked to the point of being burned. It was dry, flavorless, and just bad. White sauce didn't help. Speaking of white sauce, it's apparently a profit center at New Japan Express and carefully rationed with your meal, unless you want to purchase extra in 2 tablespoon increments. If you're in the mood for tastier hibachi, give Hibachi China 88, about a mile down Timber Drive, a try. read more

Their food is cheap, but it better be when you order yakisoba and get cheap ramen noodles that taste like they were from the 10 cent pack and very little chicken. The crab rangoon is okay at best. Two times I tried ordering. I should have learned my lesson the first time. The second time I the last time. Ordered some steak and broccoli with fried rice. It was like it had been sitting under a heat lamp. Dried white sticky rice, dried up broccoli and the steak very dry poor quality. Unbelievable. It was take out so didn't know till it got opened. And to top it all off, the guy that answered the phone on August 18, 2020 I was very short phone like I was bothering him. Rude. When I got there he was an older man. I've been getting food from here for several years, and I've never had a bad experience. The food is always fresh and the times I've ordered over the phone it's usually ready within 10 minutes or so. The staff and I'm guessing owners are always pleasant. At times they are very busy especially the weekends, so word of advice call ahead and pick up your order. The fried rice is white rice, with soy sauce and is burnt, or undercooked texture. The noodles have this really odd taste too it. Almost like a sweet not a salty. Hands down the worst take out experience for any Asian food I've ever had. I don't like to give such strongly negative reviews and I hope this was an anomaly. We were looking for something other than the typical fast food or national chains that seem to clutter the Garner-Clayton area. We noticed "New Japan Express" near the local movie theater and thought, "why not, let's try it." Immediately upon entering I was a little taken aback. I'm not sure what part of "New Japan" is new, but it hasn't reflected in the restaurant, its decor or its ambiance. It's basically a small hole in the wall (and not in a good way) that offers stir-fried Hibachi-style proteins and vegetables with rice or soba noodles and a few Asian staple appetizers like fried dumplings. For the adventurous, it also sells sushi that looks like it got bought at the local grocery store. We ordered and waited a good 15-20 minutes, which is about 3 times longer than any of the other area Hibachi restaurants. While I waited, I grabbed some of the sauces to go. Apparently, they must have had some have a real "it's all mine" run at the house special sauce at some point because a large sign limiting the total number of "cups" of sauce per entree permitted was prominently displayed -- I'm not kidding, the sauce limit sign was about four times bigger than the menu. And, we're not talking cups like 8 ounces. We're talking little plastic 1-2 ounce cups with lids like you might find at your local BBQ joint for sauce, jalapenos or pickles. And, if you want more than your share of cups of sauces, you can buy them for around $3 each. Riiiight. We got our to-go order and tried to eat them when we got home, with our rule abiding and carefully apportioned limit of cups of sauces. I had gone conservatively with steak and chicken and my better half with steak and shrimp. Given that this meal has the cooking difficulty that junior high school kids could master, I figured there was no way to screw this meal up. I was wrong. Pretty much everything was burnt and overcooked (explaining the long wait), including even the scorched broccoli. Normally we graze off of take-out Asian food for a few days. This time, most of our meals ended up in the trash, along with our crushed hopes of finding a good Japanese restaurant in Garner. read more
