Saw my fellow yelper Aunty Nadine C. yelp about this place and saw her picture on the mini hamburger steak plate. So I told my husband let's go and try it. He said he wanted to try their bbq short ribs. This place crowded because they serve breakfast as well as lunch. Lots of construction workers pick up and go. Their are some tables to fine in nice air conditioning too. Well the hamburger steak was ok not as moist like I thought it would be and thr macaroni salad was ok. The gravy was good. The mini come with 2 patties Mac salad and gravy on the patties and I think it was 1 scoop rice but being the rice was smash it could be 2. Don't know. My husband bbqcshort ribs he said was good taste charred ok but not burnt which was good but the 1st piece was good but 2nd piece the rib was grissley like stringy the way they cut the ribs. Great food and portion for such an affordable price. A plate is easily 2 meals for me. I've only tried their Mochiko Chicken Plate and Loco Moco Plate ($12.95 for each regular size), and both were really good. The chicken was light and crispy (not oily) with a good sweet savory flavor. My over easy egg for the Loco Moco was cooked to perfection, the patties are well seasoned, and the gravy has the perfect consistency and adds that extra flavor and moisture. This place reminds me of a smaller version of L&L. The food is catered towards the local pallet with dishes like loco moco, kalua pig, chicken katsu, and more. I got the mini lau lau plate, which comes with a scoop of rice, mac salad, and the lau lau. The lau lau was alright. When I got to the end of my lau lau, it was just a bunch of taro leaves and no pork, which was a little disappointing. And the mac salad is generic. My boyfriend got the mini loco moco. I honestly wish I got that instead. It comes with one egg, one hamburger patty, scoop of mac salad and rice. It was super yummy and I would definitely go back to get that any day. The wait for our food wasn't too long. It was no longer than 10 minutes. There's no parking lot in front of the store and street parking is really difficult to find, most likely meter. The beef curry is the best that I know of. The beef was so tender that it nearly melted in your mouth. The texture and taste of the curry were also very good. It was so good that I actually became a beef curry fan again and tried it at two places since, and both were not half as good. I'm knocking off a star because they refused to accommodate my request for all rice and no mac salad. I know my request was a little late, and I would not knock off a star if the salad was any good. It was halfway to being spoiled and smelt that way. I refuse to try it for fear of getting sick. For the price you just cannot go wrong with this gem. Easy to find location where the only struggle is finding parking. There's a few stalls along the building though. The food is affordable and fair portion size will keep me coming back. The fried chicken is bomb, super crispy and way bigger than zippys and well balanced seasoning. The mac salad is winnaz too, and they give choke, the scoop is like two scoops slapped on top each other. Not much of them old school local joints left. Especially in the Kakaako area. Because of that, it's normal to see a constant flow of customers there. Most of the time they order take-out or going in to pick up their phone orders. Staff is always friendly, and their food hits the spot! We had a Loco Moco plate, a Shrimp Burger, and a side of Fries. Luckily there were a few open tables on Thursday during lunch rush. We sat, we ate, and we were satisfied with paying 25 bucks. I remember coming to this place in the 1990's when I was in high school delivering newspapers. Nearly 30 years later, I was reminded of New Queen Bee's BBQ on a early morning trip to the airport. My friend reminded me about New Queen Bee's and how we used to grab food here after a shift delivering the Sunday morning newspapers. I always looked forward to that. Fast forward with my newest experience here in 2022. I had early morning flight to Maui and asked my friend to drop me off to the airport in exchange for breakfast. He told me about our old hang out and I was like, wow, that's pretty awesome. They were open at 5:30am on a Saturday morning in the semi industrial area of Ward / Kakaako. On our way, I was told to order ahead and it was a good idea. I ended up getting the NY steak plate for breakfast. My friend joked that I was having steak for breakfast, but I told him that many diners and restaurants have that kind of option, especially on the mainland USA. And so, we arrived at 5:30am and found a good open parking spot practically in front of the diner, where I hopped out of the car and proceeded to pick up my phone order and pay. It was a quick transaction, considering that it was kind of weird at that time of the morning in that part of the area. I'm usually not at that area had that part of the morning so the ambiance was kind of interesting and tense at the time. For the most part though, the transaction practically took about five minutes from entering an exiting because I did the mobile phone order instead of ordering at the counter and waiting for the order to be ready. Makes sense to have everything phoned in and not have to wait around for it. Well I'm not used to coming here for early morning breakfast, it is a pretty good place to get a good one if you're on the way to work or to the airport Like me. The overall experience here at New Queen Bee Bbq was nice, casual, positive, and fast. Because this restaurant café did not have any tables to dine in, due to COVID-19 pandemic ongoing, Best bet is to get takeout and find a place to consume it later. Only thing is where to go at that time of the morning for most people, when they want to do with their meals. The staff here was typical of any of cafe - making and fulling any phone orders on any given day. It was an interesting stop for breakfast that brought back some bit of nostalgia from my earlier years that was bittersweet. I was stoked that this place is still active after all these years and grateful that it is still alive and well, even during the nightmare that is COVID-19. You don't need to expect much here, in terms of style and class, but good and delicious local plate lunches and breakfasts that will kick start your morning or lunch time. Apparently when you order a steak plate, they give you chopped up steak with rice. They also have this menu item that says it's a steak plate, but it costs a bit more. Recommended if you are on your way to work or to the airport for early morning flights out of Honolulu. Queen Bee BBQ is located at 730 Queen Street, about 1 1/4 mile from the Ala Moana Shopping center. They accept major credit cards as well as cash, but preferred that credit cards are used due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. They require you to wear a mask inside the shop, which I did that early morning. As far as parking goes, best bet would be to come early - like before the sun rises early, just to have a good parking spot. Also phone your order in on the way to the restaurant, so you just pick up and pay instead of ordering and waiting around. Parking is pretty good early mornings, with street parking usually available. Park anywhere open and you should be okay. As far as public bus goes, best bet is route 6 that stops along Queen Street. It's also a short walk from the State Library and Kawaihao Church on Punchbowl / South King. Prices here are competitive, but usually not too expensive, depending on what you purchase. They do give generous portions with the value. Consider coming to this whole in the wall. I usually come here on Saturday due to the convenience and the hope that I will avoid the weekday lunch time crowds. In terms of décor, it's an enclosed space straight out of the seventies. Pictures of the food and a menu adorn the walls. As well as a drink case with all the beverage selections. The line to order wasn't that long. And everything on the menu was available. The service wasn't too friendly. They are there just to take your order and give it to you when it's ready. My suggestion, if it's your first time it is best to look at the pictures before you make your selection. In terms of price, it's a little cheaper that a comparable place like L&L. Food is on the greasy side.. I normally get a breakfast combo (eggs, bacon, sausage, rice) but it is what it is. Gets the job done and portion is pretty good for the price. Call ahead if you want to grab and go. They're very quick about their orders. I'm usually not in this area, but had to go get my car serviced so I stopped in today to grab lunch. This is your typical plate lunch take out spot, filled with locals so you know it's probably decent. I ordered just a cheeseburger and fries, not expecting much - I kind of expected it to be like L&L. But the burger patty was quite thick and flavorful. And they had crinkle fries, my favorite! This little hole in the wall is a complete gem! Don't be fooled by its exterior, and don't be deterred by the lack of parking. This place has the best garlic chicken in town, with a price that can't be beat. And their portion sizes are huge! Believe, I am someone who can eat. I once did meal prepping with some friends and we realized I literally ate 2.5 times as much food as they did in a week. And this is the only place I've ever been where I could order the "mini" of anything off the menu and feel satisfied at the end of my meal. I've had a couple other things off their menu here, and they are all fine, but know that my five star rating is specifically for their garlic chicken. Terrible lunch today ordered a Roast Pork plate all rice gravy all over. Well let's start with the gravy all over wow gravy must expensive cause there was hardly any gravy. Next the roast pork was so dam dry must've been in the warmer from idk two three days ago simply TERRIBLE. Usually a good place to eat not today!! And it's getting expensive. I've been here several times recently and I gotta admit I really like this place for "local style" plate lunches. I can't believe I've never been here before. They offer burgers, sandwiches and basic style plate lunches or combination plates. The lady is friendly to us as she recognizes us now when we walk in. Service is quick, the establishment is clean, and the plate lunches are affordable in today's market. The sad reality is now-a-days you can't find plate lunches for under $10 anymore, and the portions are huge, even for a mini. I have co-workers that order a mini and they still have leftovers for dinner or lunch the following day. We usually walk from the office, however, if you are driving, parking is strictly on street parking. There is no parking lot. Side note, they recycle plastic bottles and soda cans; a plus for the environment. I've never been here for breakfast but have seen my co-workers'. Everything is under $5 except for the Breakfast Combo. Their breakfast plates are also quite generous. I have been a regular at this spot for over 5 years now. This place was also introduced to me by my sister. Being that I work in the financial district in Downtown, I had colleagues give this place a try and we LOVE it. The fried chicken ($6) plate is a great deal. 3-large pieces of fried chicken w/ 2 scoops of rice and mac salad. Compared w/ Zippy's, Queen's chicken thighs were on steroids as the thighs are MASSIVE. The girls in the office also like their Chinese chicken salad ($6) with their "pepto-bismol" bright pink salad dressing. We often ask for extra chicken, which is $1 extra, so that you'll get lots of chicken w/ the veggies. I also enjoy their beef curry ($7) but you need to eat it there, rather than take-out. The rice will soak up the gravy quickly if you let it sit too long. I tend to order this a lot when I come here (see pics attached). If you are not concerned about carbs, the "mini" loco moco is also very good here (see pic). With the prices so reasonable, I once in ask some peeps in the office and call in my order so that I don't have to wait long for 15-plates! I'll admit parking can be a hassle on weekdays but I make it a favorite stop after my hike w/ buddies on the weekends. The lady that takes the orders and money is stern, but she gets it done, for someone who answers the phone, gives the food, takes the money, takes orders when you're there, she's pretty quick and on top of it! I'm surprised I haven't written a review for here yet. I come here mainly for their Breakfast Combo. It comes with 2 eggs they'll make sunny side up, unless told otherwise, 1 spam, 2 pork links, 2 slices Portuguese sausage, 3 bacon on a mound of rice. Prices have gone up from the the first time I came but all that is still under $6.00. They don't have fountain drinks, but can soda, water, or juice. They sell Diamond Head products, so you know I got the Read Cream! I posted pictures before and I'll post today's picture because the bacon was smaller than normal. I'm not complaining, since it's still a lot of food and cheap, but today the pork links are smaller equaling to 1 that they used to give and the bacon is smaller too. I got 3 pieces, but you'll see the differences in the 2 pictures I posted. It could just be what they got in, but it's okay. I went back today and they gave a lot $5.39 (without tax). So this weekend I was playing some b-ball, and after working up a sweat, it was time for lunch..........For lunch I was thinking of the Fried Chicken Plate, at the plate lunch place on the corner of Queen & Cooke Street - known as New Queen's Barbeque. Now I swear it was called Queen's BBQ, but when I got there I saw a new sign that said New Queen's Barbeque........... When I walked in, it appeared that the place had a new owner? And they did a weeeeee bit of remodeling to the joint. The little take out restaurant now has a/c that works, and when you are able to get a table, you can eat in comfort. Upon looking at the menu, it looks like the prices went up a bit, but the prices are still cheap! Like I said before, I came here mainly for the Fried Chicken Plate..........I've had this many times before, and his dish has never disappointed me. The Fried Chicken Plate comes with 3 very large thighs, two scopes white rice, & one scope mac salad............. all of this for just $7.95. I know it use to be a bit cheaper, but $7.95 for a full plate lunch is still cheap now days. I see they now offer brown rice too, at an additional cost of $0.50 for a full plate lunch, or $0.25 for a mini plate lunch.......... Today's Fried Chicken was AWESOME! It was very HOT & JUICY, just like it came straight right out of the fryer!!!!............It tasted light,& not greasy at all. My friend had the Chicken Katsu Curry, which he liked very much too. Overall, this place has a very simple menu, & serves up great deals. There is no parking, for this place, but there are a ton of meter parking available in the area. Walked in to get a plate lunch and decided to get the Fried Chicken plate for $6.50 the Chicken was crispy and juicy so it was pretty good the Mac salad however sucked too watery and too much mayonnaise in it other than that it was a good deal with 3 thighs, two scoops rice and the mac salad. Seating in there is pretty adequate unless during rush hour parking is however a problem as there is only street parking. ok, I've read everyone's reviews. Each review has a point. My point is this: For $4.25 you get a hamburger deluxe and a huge bag of french fries. The burger is broiled when ordered as with the french fries; not food sitting under a hot light. Yes, it's your local hole in the wall but it is a clean hole in the wall. I agree the specials should be tried if you plan for a plate lunch. Parking is a problem so if you're taking out- order by phone first. You might be able to eat in; they have a couple tables for those who want to eat in. Would I got back again? Yep!
