We walked in and we're unsure if we order at the counter or if there is wait staff for tables. We sat down and then went to the counter. I had 2 weiners. I would prefer the onions chopped smaller and the meat sauce was very thin but a lot. Overall it was ok. We ordered a large fry... Not so large for 2 adults and a child to share. Used to be Better Of all of the greasy spoon wiener joints that infest the state of Rhode Island, this used to be my favorite. It's a guilty pleasure. However, something slipped here. I know it changed ownership recently, but the old owner still works here, so I don't know what happened. RI wieners are a very subjective item among natives. Everyone has a favorite joint, but this spot had the most consistent version. Not anymore. My last couple of visits, the product has been subpar. Buns not steamed enough, wiener a bit dry, and very salty sauce. For years, these issues weren't a problem, which set it apart from all of the others. Overall, they still serve a good wiener, and it's still a cool late night spot to grab some grease to cover up a night of drinking, but I think my heart is now with NY System in Olneyville. NYL went downhill fast after the original owner sold out several years ago. They sold to an foreign family that didn't even know what hot weiners were. Now they are no better than that rathole called Moonlight.... Just another hole in the wall selling garbage weiners and stale rolls. Went here once and will never go back. Got rotten meat or meat sauce and stale rolls. If you want real, original and good weiners, you have to go to Providence. There's also Sam's in North Providence. As I occasionally do business in the Woonsocket area, I find myself in a position to try out the local fare. Having never had a "New York System Weiner" before- I tried them out all over town, until I found New York Lunch. Something about them just tastes a little different from the others; maybe it's the combination of the seasonings in the meat sauce, or simply just an extra shake of celery salt. The "special" is reasonably priced as well and $6.25 (inc. tax) for three weiners, a generous order of fries, (always piping hot) and a fountain soda. The atmosphere is "old school" diner. Right on the edge of we're-trying-to-look-like-an-old-fashioned-lunch-counter, and actually being it. Staff was friendly and personable. Ive been coming to New York System since I was kid. They have some of the best wieners around. It has been in the same family for years and they are so friendly. The only way to order a wiener is with the works!! Its not a very big place but it has a classic diner feel to it. I've been coming here since I was a teenager. My friend and I used to take our tip money from bussing tables at Chan's and spend some of it on weiners at New York Lunch. I usually go from 3 or 4 weiners with an order of fries and a soda and it's been consistently great. There's something about watching Tim, the owner, line up a dozen weiners on his arm as he throws on all the toppings with speed and precision right next to a picture of his father doing the same thing back in the day. They've really revamped the place since I started going as well. Lots of new decor, they've opened up the second room, I think there's even a TV in there now. Everyone who works there, especially Tim, is very nice and helpful. They have to be to put up with some of the crazies that wander in late on a Friday or Saturday night. Their prices have always been reasonable. If it wasn't for Woonsocket turning more and more into a shithole, I'd go there more often. I've been eating here since I was a little kid. Now I take my kids there. The consistency is terrific. Sure, it's not healthy, but whatever...just don't go there every day. The weiners are very good, and I love the fries. It's not fancy. But it's affordable, the food is good and it's a fun experience if you sit at the counter and watch how they assemble steamed buns, weiner, meat sauce, onions and celery salt, 10 at a time, all on top of one arm (kids especially love that part). In the olden days there was no arm glove. I'm kind if glad for the glove update if I'm going to be honest. Oh, and fresh coffee milk...mmm... One of my fellow Yelpers prefers New York Lunch OVER Olneyville, so I had to stop in and try for myself. I was worried about parking since this place is in the historic district, but then I remembered that Woonsocket is an economic sinkhole, so there's not too much going on. Parking was easy, right on the street. Anyways, this place is super cool and friendly. The weiners were very good and, in my opinion, second behind Olneyville due to the amount of toppings. The buns were super fresh and steamed, the wiener perfectly cooked, meat sauce was right on, and the onions were chopped a little bigger and cooked out more than Olneyville, so they're not as harsh. The toppings were a little light compared to ONYS, but the price was considerably lower. read more

The weiners themselves are kept warm on a grill while the buns are kept in a steam table. They place your weiner in a bun and add mustard, onion, and their special meat sauce and a sprinkle of celery salt. It's fantastic. They also have other items...but who cares...the weiners are the star attraction. They also have one of those silver milk dispenser machines....it has coffee milk inside! For those who are unfamiliar with Rhode Island, it's the state drink and darn good. It's a weiner shop that has been around for sometime now. One of the better places around and way better than onlyville weiner. Can get crazy with the late night crowds at time and a bit of a wait. Whiners are done like most are they places steamed. Inside was nice really done like an early diner would be plenty of room now inside. Almost reminds me of a Johnny rockets. I paid a visit to this place a couple of times during my stay there and those "weina's" are certainly in a class of their own. The coffee milk was pretty good as well. Now, when all the bars closed, the only things on my mind was getting some of those tasty weiners. When we got to NY Lunch, there was a line out the door. When we finally made it inside, I noticed that the guy prepping the weiners was placing about ten or so weiners on one BARE arm and used his free arm to add the meat sauce and other toppings. Having the weiners on a bare arm did raise some Unsanitary Flags for me. But to make matters worse, his other arm had a bunch of sores on it. Sadly, I did eventually eat only one. I say again, just one. If he would've worn a plastic sleeve like the some of the other weiner shops, I certainly would have ordered a hell of a lot more than just one. read more

My adorable husband is from Woonsocket, spent his whole life scouring the streets of Woonsocket. I am a Boston gal, so one time when I was picking him up from work, I noticed all over the place, "Wieners sold here, get your wieners here", there just seems to be a market for wieners in Woonsocket. Hubby orders four, two loaded and two not, a bag of chips and two rootbeers. When we get to the car, we open the bag and proceed to munch on our delightful Woonsocket gaggers. I eat up the yummy chips and I go to wash down my lunch with an ice cold rootbeer (because rootbeer just seems to go so well with these dogs). . .and I get a mouthful of Coca-Cola. I will say that the Coke was my only disappointment. But I will tell you one thing, I will be watching for that plastic sleeve I've been hearing about with the dude with the funky arm. And we ordered them "3 up" if you wanted 3 dogs with everything on it. So coming into New York Lunch was a whole new ballgame! First off, you've got weiners, not hot dogs. Secondly, you're ordering "3 all the way" and they've got no chili, but meat sauce. And celery salt. ?! Let me tell you, DELICIOUS. Not only were the wieners scarfed down in just a few minutes, but the fries were overflowing and piping hot. The staff was the friendliest I've met in Woonsocket yet. It is always an absolute pleasure to go to New York Lunch for a quick, cheap lunch/dinner and a friendly atmosphere. They've got plenty of seating, too!
