Does anyone know why Newk's closes its dining room and allows "to go" only orders after 8 pm? The posted hours are 11:00 to 10:00 pm but every time we come it is closed at 9 or 8 randomly. read more

Oh, Newk's. Like a bad boyfriend, you let me down, I return, you disappoint me some more, and on and on. I've put off writing this update in the hopes that things would improve, but unfortunately multiple visits over the last few months have been consistently not great. What concerns me is that (1) I've had problems all over the menu (salads, sandwiches, and pizza), and (2) I consistently go at times when they are NOT BUSY (think 2pm-ish) and my order is pretty much always screwed up. Issues have included: 1. A club sandwich missing half the ingredients. If I wanted a ham sandwich, I would have ordered that. 2. A pepperoni pizza with exactly 9 pepperonis on the whole thing. The manager agreed that this was incorrect -- it is supposed to have 11. Which still does not seem like a whole lot, for a pizza billed as "pepperoni," and even more pathetic that they couldn't count to 11. 3. A full size Caesar salad with chicken ($3.99 upcharge) that arrived without chicken. It was added when I pointed it out, but the chicken was not tossed with the rest of the salad, just dumped on top. 4. A Cobb salad (the husband's) with artichokes on it -- the most recent in a succession of salads not quite containing what the menu says they do. Everyone I've dealt with has been very nice, and I've been issued several refunds for both my meal and the husband's, despite nothing being wrong with his, but the fact that I cannot seem to eat at Newk's without something going awry is very frustrating. I am begging you guys, please get your act together and serve me what I order, how it's listed on the menu, so I can eat lunch here without having to go tell someone what they messed up this time. read more

We picked this place because we wanted some healthy options and it was close to Coleman Coliseum. We had a large party and were able to pull several tables together. The service was great. All of the food was as ordered and delicious. I had the grilled chicken sandwich. Super good and the bread....yummy. It's always really crowded in here but there always seems to be an available table somehow. This place may get a lot of hate because it feels incredibly commercialized and the staff don't even seem to want to be here. Whatever the issue is, I liked the endless amount of options and their pizza. I ordered the kids' pepperoni pizza despite being in my 20's. With four small pieces, I was left satisfied. We were pleased to find a healthy place to eat in Tuscaloosa. I got the Ultimate Salad, which was delicious. They are generous with the dressing which is great if that is what you are looking for. If I went back I would def ask for the dressing on the side though. The restaurant was very clean, and the staff was polite. read more

An easy 5. Fast, super friendly staff, super polite and courteous. I had the steak sandwich. Bread was excellent. Steak and grilled onions were warm. My reviews tend to skew a little high so if you're a foodie you might lower it a notch. For this kind of establishment and price, it rocked. I visited at noon on a weekday, walked up and ordered then they delivered the food directly to our table. I really wanted to like this place. It's cute inside, and it seems like a nice casual lunch spot. I liked how roomy it was and the big booths. However, I was disappointed. I first ordered a side of the Mac and cheese with bacon as I waited for the rest of my family to arrive. It was a big portion, but a little pricey for Mac and cheese ($7 after tax). It came out fast, but the bottom of the bowl was cold. So I had lukewarm mac and cheese. Then it came time to order. The Newk's Q pizza seemed right up my alley. When it came out though, it was really mediocre. The pizza was burnt. The cheese came off super easily. There was basically no sauce. It was flavorless until I dipped it in sriracha. Bleh. I only ate one piece. They also barely put any pesto on my mom's pesto sandwich, which seems to contradict the idea of a pesto sandwich. The workers seemed so not excited to be there and were not helpful. They just dropped my food off and left. I will say the dish washer/busser was definitely on top of it and was more friendly and talkative than the workers, so props to him. I don't ever write reviews since I used to work in a restaurant very similar to this one. I know that one bad visit does not always correctly represent the restaurant as a whole. I gave this location 2 stars because I've gotten the Newk's Que here and it was delicious as always. However, on my last visit I got a grilled salmon caesar salad. My first concern was that the girl taking my order didn't know what item I was talking about. Then when I got home and took my food out, I realized I recieved something completely different from what I ordered. The salad had arugula instead of romaine (in a caesar salad?), cheddar cheese, tomatoes, and no croutons. The salmon was hard and cold, definitely frozen. No idea what happened, but I was very disappointed. Make sure all cooks have proper training please, this seems like a case of improper training. This is the only bad experience I've had at Newk's, so I will be giving it another chance. read more

newks catered an event that I attended and we were asked to pre- select from one of the sandwiches. I chose roast beef. Quite possibly one of the worst decisions I have made recently. The sandwich had one tiny piece of lettuce about the size of a spinach leaf and a tomato that barely extended beyond the lettuce. It sat on a large pile of pink meat. Pink in that it actually stained the bread it was on. After a debate in my head, I decided that it wasn't actually blood so I would take a bite. The pink blob of "meat" was sinew laden fat that I could not bite through. So much for lunch. Convenient that it's a box catered lunch so I can't take it back. Newks has been a great addition to Tuscaloosa. The "Express" in their name may give the impression that it is just another fast food chain, but it is not. The freshness and quality of the food/ingredients is something like you would find at an upscale restaurant. Newks has many options-something for everyone. The prices on some items are a bit steep, but not expensive. You can eat for under $10. After studying the menu over and over because of all their great options, I usually settle on one of their gourmet sandwiches(around $6). My personal favorite is the Newks-Q. It is smoked, pulled chicken breast that has great flavor, smothered in their outstanding white sauce, and is served on a toasted baguette. Their fresh bread is delicious, and adds tremendously to the overall taste experience of the sandwiches. Another great choice is their pimento cheese. It is also served on the toasted baguette, and is an explosion of different cheeses mixed together. It's not just your ordinary one-cheese pimento spread. It also comes with sliced tomato and mayonnaise. Sometimes I venture out a bit and order one of their pizzas. For an "express cafe" they do pizzas very well. All fresh ingredients. My favorite is the BBQ chicken pizza. With a sweet and tangy BBQ sauce as its base, it builds from there. Topped with grilled chicken slabs(not the ordinary chicken strips, its thick slices of chicken like thanksgiving turkey-style slices), red onions, tomato, cilantro, and cheese, it's about as good as you can get around town. The Debra(grilled chicken and pesto) is also a great choice. Their salads and soups are like their staple items. Both are extremely good. The salads are enormous. More than one person can/should eat. I suggest ordering a half salad. And they're piled with excellent accents. Their soups are better than Mom's, especially their fire roasted tomato. This is a cafe you don't want to miss. If you're in town visiting, here for a game, or whatever, drive down University to Newk's. It's always a great choice. read more

I saw a number of large salads (generous portions, fresh looking ingredients) made for others and they looked very good. Chose the Toasted Italian sandwich myself, and was very pleased. Excellent chewy Italian bread with just the right amount of delicate crunch and a gratifying selection I meats and cheese, with a modest kick to the sauce. Super fresh creamy coleslaw on the side and an excellent tomato bisque soup to round out the meal. I eat at this Newk's location at least once a week. My Dad and I meet for lunch and it is always hot, fresh and fast ! We go at 11:30 because it is such a popular restaurant, it can be very crowded. I love the Newk's Q sandwich and ALL of the pizzas. My Dad gets a hot bowl of soup and he always enjoys it, and he is a picky eater ! I love the chicken caesar salad and enjoy the roasted garlic on the complimentary fixings bar.
