The interior of the restaurant was sleek and intimate which made it the perfect backdrop while I watched my sushi being made fresh in front of me. I loved the fact that the fish for the sushi is flown in directly from the famous fish market in Japan. I never thought I'd head to a grocery store for high-end sushi, but Next Door by Wegmans at Astor Place is the real deal. This isn't "supermarket sushi" by any stretch--it's a polished, full-service Japanese restaurant that can easily hold its own against some of the city's dedicated sushi spots. The Space: Sleek, moody, and tucked away on the street level of the massive Astor Place location, the restaurant feels completely removed from the surrounding grocery aisles. It's intimate and thoughtfully designed, large (artificial) trees, an open kitchen and sushi bar that bring great energy to the room. Service was attentive and professional without ever feeling intrusive. The Food: Outstanding from start to finish. I opted for the Chef's Tasting Menu, and it delivered a beautifully paced, multi-course experience that showcased both precision and creativity. Every dish felt intentional, fresh, and expertly executed. They have a full bar, I chose to have a glass shochu. Pro-Tip: Show up for their "Golden Hour" (4:00 PM - 5:00 PM). They have some great deals on small bites and cocktails that make for a perfect pre-dinner stop. The hostess was friendly, I sat at the bar and had a drink while I waited for my party, I opted for the lychee martini, which was more like tart than sweet and no lychee garnish ($26 after tax & tip) We were seated right away once my friend arrived, our waiter was very attentive. Despite the 4-star rating, a few negatives to note: 1. The front desk was completely clueless. We had a 7:15 PM reservation on Friday, with multiple tables available, yet we were asked to wait. Two groups arrived after us and were seated immediately. When I questioned this, I was told they were seating people with earlier reservations--even though those parties were late. That made no sense. 2. Wegmans is still Wegmans, despite all the great things I'll mention below. The restaurant is beautiful, but entering through the supermarket takes away from the experience. The entrance should be separate and away from the market. Wegmans is known for their sashimi quality fish. I have Japanese friends who praise it Still change the entrance. Seeing supermarket baskets entering a beautiful restaurant is not an added value. Now for the well-deserved 5-star highlights: Service: Outstanding. Joseph (the tall gentleman in the dark suit) seated us immediately once involved. Nick, the floor captain, and Costa, our server, were all excellent--professional, attentive, and welcoming. Food: Costa recommended the $85 per person tasting menu--an incredible value. A fantastic mix of appetizers, sushi, sashimi, and dessert. Everything was superb. I'd been curious about Next Door by Wegmans since it opened and finally had the chance to dine here this weekend. I'd had the fatty tuna and salmon from the fish market downstairs previously, so I knew the quality of the fish would be good, but had read some mixed reviews about the restaurant. It completely exceeded my expectations, though, and we had a lovely evening overall. From the outside, the restaurant looks upscale, but the entrance is inside the grocery store, which may kind of downgrade the experience. However, once you walk in, you're greeted by friendly servers into a modern, spacious dining area. I would say highlights for me were: 1. the service 2. the quality of the food 3. the atmosphere 1. Service In the beginning, service was a bit slow and it took a while to be able to order and to get our drinks and appetizers. We didn't complain or anything, but they brought us a complimentary dish that we were considering ordering as one of our appetizers. We were pleasantly surprised and it was a delicious dish. Then, there was a bit of a miscommunication regarding wasabi with one of our orders. But this was also handled very professionally (as it would have been in Japan, which is not as common here). Nick was very personable and offered me another glass of prosecco--he actually brought me a glass of Pommery, which I really enjoyed. 2. Food Everything we tried was absolutely delicious. I really liked that they had a variety of non-sushi dishes as well, especially vegetables. - lobster miso soup x2 - This is seasonal and not cheap, but a must try! It tasted more like lobster bisque than miso soup, but I love lobster bisque, so it was perfect for me. - grill shishito peppers - You can't really go wrong with shishito peppers, but this comes with a tofu dip and salt on the side. I'm not a garlic-lover, so I used the salt and it was very nice. - grilled seasonal mushrooms - This came with maitake tempura and grilled maitake--I especially enjoyed the tempura. - nigiri variation (9 pieces) x2 - You get one piece of each nigiri listed on the nigiri menu. Although they are fresh and of high quality, they are very very small. So it's easy to eat, but may not be enough for the average person. They do put fancy toppings on (which I actually prefer without, so I can enjoy the fish itself without caviar or jalapeños overpowering the sushi...). My favorites were the otoro (fatty tuna) / chutoro (semi-fatty tuna), hotate (scallop) and uni (sea urchin). 3. Atmosphere With a stylish decor, high ceilings and spaced out tables, it has a chic, comfortable atmosphere. The one lowlight would be that they only have one bathroom. (There is one inside the grocery store, but it's apparently not as nice). When you consider the portions (especially sushi), it may be on the pricier side, but the quality is definitely there and it's worth it for the overall dining experience. We unknowingly went the last day of restaurant week so we were able to take advantage of that special menu. Service, food and vibes were all incredible. We sat in the main dining area but the sushi counter was so cute and would definitely return for that experience (but also would just come back! It was that good) Cocktails were also fun. My mom has been wanting to try Wegmans next door for a minute. The interior in here is really nice. I like the green seats and the greenery. The truffle taco piece of sushi is really good. It has a rich truffle and umami flavor. I'm glad I got this for a starter. The skewers were seasoned well. You get a mix of meat and vegetables. It was quality meat. Tender and soft. The eggplant has a nice texture. I just wish it had a better hit of the sweet sauce. The steak was amazing. Might be my favorite dish. Not a big fan of the crab leg flavor wise. I don't know if it was the yuzu. I enjoyed the presentation of the sweet potato. Amazing concept. I love how they bake half of it and fry the rest as chips. They could've mixed it up better. I tried 3 of the desserts. The cheesecake was interesting. It was good but I don't know how to feel about the sesame crust it was like a cracker. I was recommended to try the semifreddo. Unique flavor on this one. I like the presentation on this one. They topped it with gold. The mochi was my favorite it comes from San Francisco and it may be the best 9'e I've ever had. It doesn't taste like the typical store bought mochi. The service here is really good. They were attentive and took care of us. Plus the food comes out fast. Expect to pay $$$ but small portions. I hated the valentines menu and service so much; i made time to write this. If you want you and your partner to collectively hate this place together: get the valentine's meal. Steak tenderloin: literally the fattiest slice of unseasoned meat; and not in the good way. Meat was literally unseasoned and relying on sauce to actually salt the dish... they didn't even give us a fork and knife until we were literally staring at the waitress with the slice of meat in our chopsticks... then she asked "do you need a knife?" Never mind that i was chewing on a fat cap and suffering through that unseasoned bite. Robata grilled madai: this one made my teeth hurt; you know how when you eat dry fish, and it's so dry that it makes your teeth stick together as you chew? Add that and no salt and you got THIS DISH. I really don't think they believe in seasoning their dishes... dish was so dry, crispy skin was so chewy, and the fish couldnt even get a dash of seasoning... Chocolate kissed raspberry: this cake made me miss what actually good desserts taste like. Only good thing was that the chocolate was tempered correctly; the rest was: below subpar. The cake base holding everything together: do they also not believe in sugar?? It was easily the worst cake i've had and unfortunately had to pay for. The raspberry sorbet? Geez just get a ninja creami and make your own because what was that? Overall: service was subpar; food was subpar; price: fabulously expensive at $95 per person We ordered drinks but those came after 5 courses were served. I don't recommend the cocktail menu either; nothing really appealing and nothing really special. Save your money and go somewhere that believes in seasoning their dishes and giving you a knife for your steak; even if it's a disgusting slice of tenderloin. The vegetarian nigiri, though expensive, was thoughtfully prepared with complex, unexpected flavors -- far more than just vegetables on rice. I also really enjoyed the eggplant and sweet potato dishes, both of which were excellent. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and while the service showed a few signs of early-stage growing pains (it took a while to get the bill), the staff was kind and attentive. I was really looking forward to it too The atmosphere of the restaurant was very clean and aesthetic. So kudos there. It is inside a Wegmans, so that's a fun little loop. The food and service however were very underwhelming (hence me only snapping a few pics). The nigiri was good, but for the price you're paying, I would have liked someone to walk me through what the pieces were. They just set it down in front of me and bolted off. On top of that, I had ordered a cocktail and was finished with it before appetizers had been brought out. Next Door by Wegmans is a welcome addition to the increasingly competitive sushi scene in NYC. I came here with a friend on a Friday evening via Open Table at 8:15. They allowed me to seat a little early and this allowed me time to review the menu offerings. My friend said she would be okay with whatever I ordered, but I waited for her. We agreed the interior decor is very pleasing to the eyes. The color palette is somewhat neutral and very calm. I would not know how to categorize the style of interior design. Someone would have to help me on this aspect. I ordered the Kubota Manjyua Junmai Daiginjo sake. You will want at least a carafe of that fresh melon and pear forward sake. The same was a great pairing for our meal. The description is accurate. I ordered the koji marinated ribeye, medium as a compromise between our temperature preferences, and the whole Branzino as our mains. The chirashi maki roll with salmon, tuna and yellowtail is fresh, substantial and satisfying. The grilled zucchini paired well with the Branzino and they bring you their roasted shiseido peppers on the house. The primary attribute of Next Door is the freshness quotient. Everything is fresh. It was primarily noticeable with the maki roll, then the whole Branzino, the latter of which is accompanied by three sauces: chili oil, truffle, and a cilantro citrus sauce. The fresh Branzino with its crispy skin and great preparation, not overcooked, stood on its own. The Branzino does not need the sauces from my experience. The steak was still juicy at medium. I prefer medium rare, but the compromise was good for me and good for her. She appreciated its juicy nature and we shall see if that influences her to order at a lower temperature next time. By the way, the steak and Branzino come presliced for one to work with the chopsticks; though, the Branzino comes in rather substantial slices owing to the delicacy of the fish and it would likely fall apart if sliced too thinly. The Branzino was slightly better than the steak in my opinion and the Branzino will likely become one of the star offerings from this menu. It comes with sea salt as well and a garnish of shredded carrots and radishes. The garnish accompanies many dishes and the sauces repeat as well. The roasted shiseido peppers are very good as well with their own sauce that has a creaminess as counterpoint to the roasted peppers. The roasted shiseido peppers require a bit of a mature palate to appreciate their flavor in a highly roasted, almost black, state. You'll get the earthy and nutty flavors, but the sauce is a great counterpoint and a nice texture counterpoint to everything else you are experiencing. For dessert, we split the semifreddo pistachio and amareno cherries with a cherry champagne foam they whip up just before serving it on the side next to the whole dessert. It's light and unique. It is not too sweet and hinted at a Persian influence for me. Service was top notch and it is they may visit your table in pairs as the restaurant goes through its teething stage. They are receiving feedback and learning from their experience as much as the patrons. The manager on duty will also visit your table. So they are paying close attention at this stage. The check came and it is what I expected at this level. This came to around $300 for two people, including tip, which places it squarely in the steakhouse and sushi range and the more substantial steak and Branzino pairing allowed us not to feel famished afterwards. One of the problems with sushi is one can spend a lot of money and still want a cheeseburger afterwards. We were good afterwards. 4.3 fresh stars! read more

After my last visit, Joseph from Next Door reached out with a thoughtful and sincere apology, explaining that they take allergies and aversions seriously and wanted the chance to make things right. I appreciated the gesture--and even more so, what happened when I returned. On my second visit, things went much more smoothly. John and Chris both came over to speak with me, and their care and attention really shifted our whole view of the experience. The fish continues to hold up to the previous quality--fresh, clean, and well-prepared--but this time, the service matched it. Anyone can have an off night, but how a place responds says everything. We don't eat raw animals. All the cooked food we had was excellent. The whole Branzino had superbly perfectly crisp skin- With a hint of sweet, maybe even citrus taste to it, and the 3 sauces that went with were each tasty and special. The king crab leg was surprisingly better some minutes after it first came out. It tasted better Closer to room temp. The candy potato is also good. The beef skewers appetizer was also good - They were able to make one non-spicy for me and one spicy for my guest. Appreciate the service, and the lady on the phone (I think Annie?) who helped me get a reservation last minute the night before even though there were no spots left online. Semi freddo was beautifully plated. It would have been even nicer if they could've comped the dessert for a birthday like some other nice restaurants do.
