The staff is warm, kind, and welcoming, and the service from our lovely server Dulce was truly top-notch. The food felt fresh, clean, and thoughtfully prepared. I'm a sucker for agedashi tofu, and even though it wasn't overly bold, it was still comforting and delicious. We also had miso soup, sushi rolls, mushrooms en papillote, wagyu yaki shabu, kisu tempura, and the matcha crème brûlée--which was perfectly balanced and not too sweet. Sneaky great omakase (and a la carte) sushi spot. Hasaki might serve what I think to be the most true-to-Japan omakase experience for under a hundred bucks. The omakase came with a handroll, two appetizers, 12 nigiri and dessert. Quality was great throughout and pace was not rushed. The fish was super fresh and each was well-prepared. You get to see the chef make tiny incisions to help shape the fish and then seasoned with a healthy variety of things (ranging from flavored salts, soy sauce etc). The rice was well seasoned and cooked well. Service as very attentive and theme atmosphere was calm. Everything about this place screams upscale. The bathroom has a bidet and complimentary floss and hand sanitizer packets. They have a coat check. The ambiance is warm with lots of dimly lit wood and clean lines. It's quiet - no loud music or flashy lights. The service is excellent. Came here for a birthday and they brought out mochi ice cream and lit a candle for us. This is one of the few sushi restaurants in nyc that offer regular service, and not just omakase. Their menu extends a bit beyond what is actually written on the page so be sure to ask if there's a certain cut or fish that you'd like but don't actually see. King Salmon Potato Salad - the salmon was so fresh, they had a bit of light jalapeno in the mix. Light mayo, and roe. Every bite was a delight, honestly. Staff was very nice but extremely overpriced. Best thing I had was the Uni from main. Their Aji was fishy and the yellow clam special wasn't great. They pushed sake to drive up the bill. Waiter tried to upsell expensive special dishes despite being nice. The rice on the sushi pieces were very small no where have I seen the rice being that little. I didn't mind but kids was different. I have been to probably 100 different omakases in nyc, and I can say without a doubt this is my favorite. This isn't a cheap foie gras / truffle / a5 overload sushi omakase. Rather, the team is fully focused on their craft. All fish is fresh from Japan and rotates on a daily basis (I went Thursday night and then again on Saturday and a lot of the fish had rotated). A lot of things I had never had and were in season. Staff was incredible - we had four people waiting on us. Restaurant ambiance very nice and clean. Absolutely loved this restaurant for my first omakase experience! It was $90 per person, which was pretty good considering how yummy and high quality the experience was. I loved almost every piece (except for the octopus and fatty tuna sushi - for no other reason than texture problems), and left feeling satisfied but not stuffed. Our chef was wonderful, kind, and speedy, as was our waiter. But we never felt rushed! The restaurant itself was so nice and calm, I loved the traditional-feeling decor and the ambience overall. Solid sushi nestled in East Village. Went with friends for omakase and was able to get reservations without much of a struggle. They have an outdoor patio with tables reasonable separated for social distanced dining from other patrons. Ordered the sushi and sashimi omakase. It came out all at once. Fish was fresh, and portion size solid. They also had a good selection of fresh fish, but to keep things simple with my group, we all did the same omakase. The weather was amazing and great to enjoy at the patio. For omakase aficionados, table dining is blasphemy, but its really the only way to roll when you are trying to enjoy it with a group of 4. Came here on a Thursday night as one of my friends was having a strong craving for Uni. We were in the area and this spot was the first place we found that was serving Uni. The Unis, listed as Uni Maine, were listed for $8 each. We ordered quite a handful amount of them. They're served with rice on the bottom and uni on top wrapped in seaweed (assuming you don't know). We also ordered two Sushi & Sashimi Omakase, which went for $75 each. They tasted just as you expected them to taste with no real high expectations for it to be out of the world, although it was quite expensive. The entrees came with Miso Soup and although we only ordered two entrees, we got three soups for each of us. Besides the food, we ordered three different bottles of sake. Don't remember which ones and you can probably guess why. I guess from the amount of money we spent here, the server brought out another bottle on the house. *queue the "i'm in danger" meme. The server was awesome, tolerating how obnoxious we must have been (after a few bottles of course) and playing music from a bluetooth speaker. Hopefully, we helped support a local business in return. I used to love this place. Haven't been in a few years, as we had an issue with a piece of metal in the rice that went basically ignored, but decided to give them another shot. It was nowhere near as good as it used to be. When it's good, their fish is great, i.e. tuna and king salmon are world class. However, for a place like this to not offer salmon toro (belly) and one that doesn't marinate their ikura (salmon roe), i.e, Shoyu Zuke, is beyond. The ikura was bland. The waitress was extremely nice but could barely speak English and couldn't name the pieces nor answer our questions. They also left a couple of pieces off our order. They gave us one they left off but not sure if we got the other ones as they all look like hamachi (yellowtail). Apps-wise, while the salad was good, it's crazy they don't offer a ginger/carrot dressing. The shrimp dumplings were great but the dipping sauce was awful. We wound up dipping them in the salad. Also, the soy sauce was a huge disappointment. Sushi Seki brews their own and destroys theirs. And, as any sushi lover knows, even if you use just a drop, the soy is a big part of the flavor. If it wasn't, everyone would use Kikkoman. It was also like 90 degrees in the dining room. Wayyy to hot and I had a t-shirt on. All these issues at a place whose average price is $10/piece, and we probably won't be back, as there are many other spots in the city worthy of your money. Do better, Hasaki. This is hands down the best sushi place in NYC. They've been here since the 80's so they must be doing something right. The fish is so fresh and their service is outstanding. I came here this time with a new friend who had never been here. She enjoyed the meal so much. I really love the grilled salmon and sushi of course- it was so fresh that it melts in your mouth. The waiter was knowledgeable and helped us choose a sake to pair with the meal. They also have a newly renovated garden in the back that is open for outdoor dining. I recommend making reservations on Resy before going. I am glad they are now taking reservations for small parties. The restaurant is located below street level and would be easy to miss in the dark if it weren't for the bright neon sign, which is the only thing that detracts from the feel of this place. Once inside, it feels quaint, cozy, and a little like you've been transported to small town Japan. To start, we ordered a bottle of Forgotten Japanese Spirit junmai off their substantial sake menu. Delicious. For food, we got the Early Bird Dinner Special w/Salmon Oyako Don (a bento box meal with your choice of main dish available only before 6pm, $31) and the Sushi Regular (8-pieces of sushi & your choice of roll, $30). Note that if you choose the futomaki roll for the Sushi Regular, you only get half a roll, which is still a lot of food. Both items were a feast for the eyes; beautiful colors and variety of food. Hasaki just meets the bar for acceptable sushi but i can't say i was either disappointed or happy to have gone. The price is pretty middle of the road ($70 for a sushi omakase). Omakase gets served on a platter to you all at once. The fish quality is fine, lots of typical cuts (blue fin tuna, mackerel) taste as expected, but feel slightly warm (as if they have been sitting). The freshness of the fish doesn't really come through as you might expect from counter top sushi (maybe my mistake for not sitting at the counter). The establishment seems to draw people more due to its name and legacy (open since 1984) than quality of food. Would probably recommend going to a more expensive place and ordering fewer cuts or going to a much cheaper place and at least eating your fill if craving sushi. Coming here i felt both that i had paid a bit for what i got and was not satiated in fullness or flavor. Agedashi tofu was excellent though. read more

It breaks my heart to write this review. When I first discovered the magic of Japanese cuisine, I was in high school. Hasaki is a Japanese institution of the East Village, the last samurai standing after the sad recent downfall of beloved familiar homes like Yokocho, Panya and Sunrise. The menu was once vibrant--featuring two delicious versions of nabe. Seasonal specialties prepared in regional distinctions. The sushi was, of course, impeccable. The tempura was a delight. I always loved to order a plate of it as an appetizer, the quality was so perfect. But all that is gone. Ambience is central to enjoying good quality Japanese food. That is not to say that a jovial izakaya filled with cigarette smoke and outdated music isn't as close to perfection as it can get but for Hasaki-who prides itself on an authentic, high-quality-cuisine-that element is central. Stepping down into the subterranean space of Hasaki from the soiled, noisy, college-student chattered air of the Lower East aside, you enter a space of blissful tranquility. A calm, surgically clean, perfectly arranged dining area where one expects the food to arrive on your plate like the work of art it. The ambience is still there--a removal, a respite from the grunge of NYC streets. But the menu has been sadly pared down to its bare minimum. Gone is the tempura. Gone is the nabe. Gone is the teishoku twilight dinner for a reasonable price. Gone is the seasonal special. Just overpriced sushi remains. And while the quality is still high, I should not feel like my fish had been sliced straight out of the freezer. Ice cold fish atop loose, slippery, stained sushi rice is not worth the price tag. How am I meant to pick it up with my chopsticks if it keeps falling apart? And worse, a chef accidentally dropped an object from behind the sushi bar with a loud flatter, breaking the peaceful ambience which was the only good thing about Hasaki worth its price. No one even apologized. I hope this experience is just a reflection of a reduced summer menu and that their original vibrant and varied menu will return in the Fall. That would be worth the price tag. My memories of Hasaki are too fond to shake off. I have always bragged about Hasaki and taken newcomers to Japanese cuisine there to experience all the greatness of Japanese culture and food.
