Although I am not vegan by any stretch of the imagination, I did thoroughly enjoy this meal. My wife, who is lactose intolerant, loves milk shakes which is what initially brought us here. We both got burgers. She got one of the beyond burgers while I got a bean patty. We were both impressed with the quality. We shared a tots covered in "cheese" and jalapeños and each got our own shakes. For a place that isn't really a traditional sit down restaurant the prices were a little high. Beyond the staff doing their best, my review centers on the food. My son and I had a "signature burger" and a "chicken burger": the total was around $22 without fries! The chicken burger is nothing more than a chicken patty that comes from the chicken patties you can buy at Costco! The chicken burger (protein style) was dry and tasteless (actually, McDonald's chicken nuggets have more taste and a fraction of the price!), and it was just the patty on top of a bunch of lettuce leaves. While this was disappointing enough, their "signature burger" was outstandingly awful! It tasted like old, hardened, refried beans; actually more like a paste. I tried the signature burger with cheddar and it was decent. The flavor was good and it was mildly filling. No bun for me so I got it on a bed of lettuce. I think I'd try the classic next time with pickles and ketchup, mustard, mayo. I tried the deep fried sweets (sweet potato fries) and they were good. A little too much seasoning and salt for me but overall good texture, consistency, temperature, and crispiness. This is my second time eating at Next Level Burger and overall, a good vegan joint! The location is a bit odd being in a Whole Foods and feels a little cramped, but they have ample indoor and outdoor seating. The food is quite pricey, however it is absolutely delicious (and the shakes are a must)! Today a friend and I had gone to grab some late lunch at Next Level Burger and we could tell that they were severely understaffed/in the midst of a rush. It took about 15 minutes before our order was taken and about another 30 minutes there after to receive our food and drinks. My friend and I were not upset being that we have both worked in food services before and know that those situations can be very difficult. The staff apologized on multiple occasions and even gave us a card to receive a free milkshake in the future! I drove down from Sacramento (a 90 minute trip) to give this place (NLB) a try since I'd already paid visits to Amy's Drive thru, Veganburg, Veggie Grill, and a few other vegan burger spots--all delicious in their own right. And, considering the Beyond Burger and Impossible Burger are practically everywhere now, I wanted to try something new. Well, I'm not that into "junk food" or "fast food" but the food here was damn good! I went with the Animal--greasy, saucy, and more calories than anything I should feel comfortable putting in my body but for a change of pace and flavor, Gawd was it good! The $14 price tag seems a little steep for what you get but I wasn't complaining. Plant-based is better for the planet and my body (even if only marginally) so I'm okay with tossing down a few more dollars for something that isn't (a*hem, you know) dead animal. The place, I didn't know before showing up, is located inside a Whole Foods 365 (sort of like the smaller Walmart markets) which was fine. I ended up picking up a few unplanned things while I was there anyway--nearly $100 worth. Sheesh, why you do me like that WFs! Anyway, the seating is a little awkward. The seats are bolted down and the height of the tables either works for you or it doesn't and the arrangement of the seating area is a little weird. I love that there are so many vegan options popping up all over the Bay Area, especially the East Bay. I've been to the movies over here several times but wasn't aware this place existed until I yelped vegan food in Concord. Next Level Burger is located inside of the Whole Foods 365and has a plethora of menu items to meet any vegan eaters delights. I was going for comfort food sans the soy so I ordered two items from the seasonal menu; the tomato basil burger and the strawberry coconut soft serve based shake with a regular offering the chili "cheese" fries. The burger YUMMMO, small in size but it packs tons of flavor. It's messy so don't order this if you don't intend on getting your hands and tons of napkins dirty in the process of devouring it. The fries had great chili flavor but I'm not a huge fan of crinkle fries but if thin cut was an option this would be a favorite of mine. The shake was a great accompaniment as well. read more

If you're Vegan or Vegan curious then you've probably been eagerly awaiting the arrival of this small but growing burger chain to the extended East Bay. Yes Oakland/Berkeley/SF peeps it's time to be totes jelly. After 3 visits within their opening week, you can say I'm a bit of a fan. What else can I say except The Duke approves! They offer multiple types of patties to top your buns with. Of course with the introduction of the Beyond Burger, there really isn't much need to go for the others aside from the added cost. You could go buckwild and get The Animal but it's really just a novelty. You may as well order two burgers. Since they're all about options, you can also get your fries crinkled, sweet potato'd or totted. These also come fried or baked. I've tried both, I prefer fried. Except maybe the tots, those could be baked as the fried version was extra greasy. In keeping with their theme of offering many options within the same product, you may also choose to have any of these fried taters topped with chili, cheese, or another variety of condiments. I love me some Veggie Grill but they refuse to listen to me. I've told them for years that they need to get beer on tap. Well at least NLB coming from beer paradise got the memo and offers several sudsy choices fresh from the tap. The milkshakes here are outstanding. Especially when you go for the extra indulgent coconut base and add nuts and other crunchy fare that increase both the calorie content and boost the flavor. It's cool they give you the mixing cup and a spoon on the side filled with the rest of your shake. The only thing they could improve aside from the cost? Fix them buns! They are dry and unappealing. Sometimes they fall apart. They really don't help the burger at all and detract from the plant based goodness. So get on the next level and check it out soon. This is a nice alternative to the quick burger and fries concept. The Burger patties are vegetarian but taste like the real thing. The place offers Shakes and fries and of course the burgers that are vegetarian with Quiinoa and black beans options. Staff is friendly and they are pretty informative. You can also order beer or a shake with your meal. A couple of seats inside but there is more seats along the front of store or outside on patio. Fine, I was hungry and it was getting late, and we already spent our money here. When it was made again, it still didn't taste right. The patty was way too thick, and temperature was off. I don't like that they only have burgers and dogs. My husband got the chili dog, made with beyond sausage, which had more flavor but not much chili was on top. He thought it was ok. OMG, the Java milkshake is to die for! I ended up getting the burger with bacon and let me tell you, it was filling and absolutely delicious. Prices are a bit high, but that's because this is the only vegan burger joint in the area. Waiting for our order took a bit - around 15 mins - but it allowed me and my mom (who has never had a vegan burger!) to talk and enjoy our drinks. Also, there were a lot of folks, so that could have been a reason. Btw, I read Tiffany R.'s review...yikes. Lucky for her she can find a burger joint that serves meat, versus us vegetarians and vegans gotta go near or in San Francisco just for the impossible burger or VeganBurg! I'm personally beyond thrilled that Next Level Burger is now close to home where plant based and not plant based folks can enjoy a relatively healthier burger option. As a side note, I would advise folks first and foremost always ask what ingredients are being used if you are unfamiliar with plant based burgers. This place uses soy patties (unless I'm mistaken) and I'm used to Dr. Praeger's Mushroom Risotto patties (which are the only ones I eat when making burgers!) so the soy patties threw me off a bit, but I had a happy belly afterwards. The vegan bacon they use is probably one of my favorites - I don't miss bacon at all, but the smell of these cooking is intoxicating for me! Like many restaurants the mouth watering pictures on the menu do not match up to the real thing! First of all it drives me crazy when restaurants out tomato on a sandwich when not in season as it's just a large pale slice of nothingness! Over all the sandwich was fine not great or even worth trying again. If you want a good chickenless sandwich just by morning star way more and crispy, too. In short, very boring and left me wishing I'd just gotta a bean burrito for my favorite Mexican restaurant. But the redemption is their tater-tots!! Yummy! I also didn't do my due diligence and didn't know that they ONLY had vegetarian/vegan options. The first time, they included tomatoes and pickles on my burger, which I specifically asked them not to. Then the second time, they gave me the wrong burger... they remade my GF's burger. Yeah, so I guess that's their fault. I'll throw them a bone though. Value: 0/1 Yeah, everything was much more expensive than it would have been if we had just gone to a traditional burger joint. So glad I made it to the grand opening! I ordered the Special Sauce Burger & Spicy Fries. It was so good, I got the fries baked instead of fried so that's healthy...right? Lol Regardless, it was all worth it! I'm so happy to have a vegan place like Next Level in the area. It's connected to the 365 Whole Foods and there's lots of seating. The NLB team was so busy today but I noticed everyone working hard. A lot of customers were waiting a long time since it was a busy first day but I appreciated the positivity and great customer service despite the pressure. So far, the only feedback I have is to have Non-crinkle fries. I'm more of a regular-cut-fry type of girl. And with the Fries with Style flavors, it would be so much better with regular fries. We really appreciated it when they asked us if this was our 1st time and to explain the concept and the menu. Everything on the menu including cheese and mayo is 100% vegan. Almost everything was organic as well. Being organic gives it an edge over all other vegan places. My order: mexical burger, crinkle fries,chili cheez fries, and a shake. You can order any fries as baked or fried. I loved the choice. No other place gives you that. I'd highly recommend baked (extra crispy). We ordered one of each kind and the baked crinkle was the winner. They also have vegan shakes which was amazing! Soy or coconut based. I got S'mores and l really liked it. The burger is delicious, but the sauteed kale is disgusting. Somehow, the sauteed kale taste like mustard greens without any of the deliciosness in soul food. The burger was small, but it's dense, so i think it's worth the dough. I got the signature, with half & half cheese, and bacon- highly recommended. I really wanted to like this place because our family is trying very hard to add more vegetarian meals to our diet but the food here just didn't satisfy our taste buds. My wife used to be a vegetarian and she said the burger would be pretty good IF she hadn't gone back to eating real burgers in the past couple of years... so if you're a vegetarian already this place will probably blow you away. To be honest, I wasn't entirely in a burger mood when I visited, and had been a bit overwhelmed by the crowds in Whole Foods. Next Level is in a weird corner space carved out of the WF building, but I guess it works. For a brand new business, this place is running incredibly smoothly. I ordered the SoCol and it came within 5 minutes. This is by far the least amount of time I've waited for an order in a very long time. My only complaint is that the fries (very important to a good burger) could have been a bit crispier - I certainly would have waited for that. The burger itself was kind of earthy - you really feel like it's real food, which is refreshing in a burger. It's a bit out of the way for me, but I do pass by sometimes, so I'll try it again soon enough. Plus of course it's 100% vegan, so highly recommended. Top stuff. read more

Plenty of outdoor seating and a small bench area/play area for the kiddies. When ordering, staff makes sure you know the the menu is all plant based. For food I ordered the animal, stacked burger with sausage style burger, smoked tempeh bacon, crinkle fries, sautéed onions and cheddar cheese (vegan). I spilt the burger with my hubby cause god knows I can't finish that behemoth burger. Also ordered a side of the tater tots which you can ask for deep fried or baked. The animal was super filling and delicious. Definitely messy when you eat it, make sure you have plenty of napkins and a fork and knife. The tater tots were nice and crisp, I tried the baked version and was equally yummy as well. All vegan burger joint inside of a Whole Foods 365 store. Well, it's off to the side of the store that you can access from outside or enter from inside the store. Plenty parking (it's in a plaza) The shakes can be made with a soy or coconut base. The sides-- fries, tots, sweet potato fries.. they can be baked or fried.. Alongside the regular menu, they offer seasonal specials.. You order at the register, they give you a number, have a seat somewhere and they bring your order to you. I got my shake first and almost finished it by the time I got food.. I couldn't hold off for my food. I got baked spicy tots and baked is a nice option to have but I should've went fried. I think fried would've given the crispness over baked. I'll just have to try it that way next time. The Bleu BBQ Burger was good. Not wow but decent. I liked my tots and shake better. Super delicious plant-based grub! I had the all American "burger" with tempeh "bacon" and cheddar "cheese". I scarfed it down quickly because it was so yummy. I am excited to come back and try the other burgers, their fries smothered in the works (and apparently you can get them oven-baked instead of fried - yay!), and the "milk" shakes - which come in a bunch of flavors and with either a coconut or soy base. For the burgers they offer either a whole grain or gluten-free bun. They also have hot dogs. They have a kids' menu, desserts, and beer (and I think maybe wine.. not sure). Friendly service. Lots of outdoor seating. Would love some footrests under the indoor bar stools - dangling legs are awkward. :) Burgers could be a tad larger. Or maybe I just love eating too much. Can't wait to come back for more delicious vegan food! Would love if they had diet cola but I'm sure they don't want to use artificial sweeteners or something. Finally tried this place out for lunch. It's been on my list for awhile as I usually just come to this place for a milkshake and always mean to try some of their food. First off, this place is plant based, so no animal products here, so their milkshakes aren't made with milk but with either a soy or coconut base. On this recent visit I learned you can even mix the two now. I really like the milkshakes here, my go to is the coffee or the mocha Joe (I think it's called). I always feel a little better/healthier thinking that I'm using dairy alternatives...but idk how much healthier it actually is lol. So for this visit, I ordered the bbq blue burger and it was ok for me. The burger itself was pretty filling but the flavors weren't for me. The combo of bbq sauce and a blue cheese style sauce wasn't for my liking and I wasn't the biggest fan of the patty. Their other burgers that did look appealing, so next time I'll try those. On thia order I also got a small size tater tot. These were really delicious since they had the right amount of crispiness for me. I will say though, for the price I wish I got a little more in the serving. Overall, I find this place to be pretty good. The milkshakes, and now, tater tots would be my go to here.
