    10. VEGAN LEMONGRASS TOFU
    Shannon S.

Counter attendant was super quick and you're expected to know your order before you get to the front of the line (especially as there is a line)! I got the lemongrass tofu bahn mi and the tofu was so heavily seasoned and cooked so well I thought it might be meat for a second. However, it was just really good tofu! The bread was crisp on the outside with a very fluffy inside. The veggies were fresh! It's a super small place and perfect for takeout

I had the #4 grilled pork banh mi. It was a good, no nonsense banh mi. There are other quick options besides banh mi too, e.g., various bbqs over rice, little desserts. The ladies working there are also really warm. It's not a very big space. There are a couple of tables, but more of a take out spot. Easy grab and go meal, with more affordable prices.

We made the trip up north just to stop at Nhu Lan, and if you're wondering if it was worth it, we didn't manage to get a single picture of the food before wolfing it down in the parking lot right outside. We got 3 Banh Mi: the Nhu Lan Special, the Roasted Pork, and the Betal Leaf Wrapped Beef. I can say without question that the Roasted Pork was one of the best Banh Mi I've ever had in my life. The bread was light with some crisp, and the pork was as juicy and flavorful as any mere mortal could ask for. I won't go into a lot of detail here, because honestly I ate far too quickly to break down each individual aspect, but I can tell you that this place is a must-visit. Will be returning.

Made to order sandwiches with a wide variety of fillings and fresh vegetables. Prompt service. 2 tiny tables to wait or eat. Meat available by the pound as well. Good sized sandwiches for the price (most $8-10 each).

The sweetest ladies work there! This is a hidden gem, a little away from the Main Street. I usually go to the other one on the Main Street but decided to check this shop out and I'm glad I did! Price is good and they give you a lot of stuff in the sub!! They take credit card here as well. There is more pate in the sub than the other place :)

I recently had the opportunity to try this delicious establishment with my gf and I fell in love instantly. Since I don't eat pork I normally don't get a chance to try Bahn mi's. But here they have chicken options so I was in luck. I have tried both the curry chicken and the lemon grass chicken and they are so delicious. The sandwhiches are so crunchy, and the veggies are always fresh and crisp which compliments the warm chicken very well. If you never been, I suggest given them a try asap!

This was the first time i went here for their banh mi. I got their combination and grill pork banh mi. The combination does have sufficient topping with plenty of pate. The grills pork is adequate amount of grill pork. It is located in an area with decent parkings in the parking lot. The sandwiches came out quickly.

I only come here for the number 9 veggie classic. This sandwich is insanely delicious from their homemade mayo, to the toasted rice powder, thinly fried tofu strips, crisp cucumbers, pickled daikon/carrots and the bread. You have to try the number 9!!!

No frills banh mi counter! Grilled pork was filled to the brim with crispy skin, chunks of fresh juicy meat, pickled veggies, and jalapeños. Service was quick and efficient!! Cheap and delicious, what more can you ask for?

This place is so so good every time. I had to get two banh mis this time because I knew I don't come to the area often. I got the roasted pork, which is a crispy pork, and lemongrass chicken. It is seasoned sooo well and the pickled radish slaw and cilantro compliments it so well! So good.

    Bánh mì: #1 special
    Catherine N.

A carry-out-only spot for really really solid bánh mì The baguette was crispy with not too much or too little of any ingredient (there is such a thing as too little cilantro or too much meat in a bánh mì). I got the #1 special and my kids got the grilled pork. Maaaybe I could use a touch less mayonnaise and a touch more Maggi seasoning, but I'm nitpicking. And this might sound like a weird detail, but I appreciate that they drain their pickled daikon and carrots (context: I've had three bánh mì from other places around Chicago that were soggy with pickle brine and I'm like do I really have to go to Uptown/Argyle Street to find a shop that knows not to do this? (So far, the answer is yes .) They also have refrigerated cases of Vietnamese desserts, and some Vietnamese snacks: -The Pork patty sticky rice / Xôi chả lạp xưởng is really good - We thought the BBQ pork bun/Bánh bao xá xíu was just ok (a little too sweet) but will come back to try the Viet-style bao They also have roast meats, which I'll have to come back to try: Chinese-style roast pork and xá xíu (aka char siu aka BBQ pork), roast duck. Note: they have no seating; this is a carry-out spot only. We couldn't wait and ate in the car. So did the customer who went in after us.

After searching google for good restaurants on Argyle, we decided to eat here. I had rice with grilled pork chop and sunshine egg, and my partner had steamed rice noodles with grilled beef and shrimp. We split the spring rolls. First, the portion sizes were on the larger side, which pleasantly surprised us. Second, the spring rolls came out almost immediately, and the rest of the food came out within 10 minutes of ordering! The grilled pork chop was divine - perfectly seasoned and juicy. The freshness of the steamed rice noodles created a wonderful lightness to balance out the beef and shrimp, which were both cooked perfectly. There were so many dishes to choose from which originally seemed daunting, but now that we know you really can't go wrong here, it just means we have to come back again to try more! P.S. You have to order the coconut drink - you drink straight from the coconut and it's so refreshing.

Well, it is kind of tucked away in a desolate area on Canal Street, but still. One of my good friends suggested we check this place out after hearing about it from a co-workers. The only thing I know about Vietnamese cuisine is pho (which for some insane reason, I've never had) and banh mi, which I tried (and loved) while visiting my fave cuz in the Bay. . I arrived early to this very large, beautifully decorated venue on a Tuesday night and was intrigued by the set-up. One side was all tables, the other side was tables and multiple gigantic screened tvs playing Family Feud and the World Cup games. Kinda crazy. I chose to sit on the big screen side while waiting for my date. He called to say he was running late and to get the order started. I had been waiting a bit, so i caught the eye of one of the workers, who came right over. He was so friendly and accommodating and answered all questions. I ordered the green Thai kumquat iced tea, spring rolls and the chicken wings he highly suggested. He rushed off to place the order. Moments later, a couple of distinguished gents walked in and sat at a huge round table cater-corner from me and soon thereafter the nice man who took my order sat down with them. I'm assuming he was the owner for obvious reasons. I gained more respect for this establishment because customer service goes a very long way with me and he obviously cared about that. Our server, a very friendly young lady, brought my drink out and I was surprised to see that it was served in what looked like a sippy cup, with a cartoon design on the lid. Kinda weird seeing as I am an adult, but it was a tasty beverage, nonetheless. My friend showed up as the spring rolls and chicken wings came out. We devoured both, which were delicious and then placed our orders. I went with lobster noodles and my friend got the beef tenderloin pho. Even though my entree presentation wasn't the best, it was a very tasty dish to both of us. The beef tenderloin pho was definitely the star of the show! The broth was fragrant and flavorful and the beef was tender beyond measure. I'm an avid ramen fan but this pho definitely had my attention and I can't wait to try more. Ocean Bar and Grill is such a cute, quirky place that caters to date night diners, groups and families. They were all in there that night and everyone seemed to be having a great time. I know I did. I'll definitely be taking my daughter when she comes home from her summer internship!

Creative Vietnamese Brunch with Standout Wings, Though the Egg Coffee Missed the Mark…read more HaiSous remains an enjoyable spot for a more modern take on Vietnamese cuisine, with quick, efficient, and friendly service in a polished setting. We came for brunch right when the restaurant opened, and it was only about 25% full, which made for an easy and relaxed meal. The crispy chicken wings were excellent -- fried well, nicely seasoned, and easily a go-to order. The bánh xèo was also very good, served hot and fresh with a crisp shell and plenty of filling, though I would have appreciated more leafy greens and herbs for wrapping. The bánh canh cua, or crab noodles, had genuine flavor, a nice spicy balance, and was served piping hot. The crab meat is broken up into the broth, so you do need to drink the spicy broth to get the full benefit of the dish. The beef papaya salad was just alright. Compared with other papaya salads I've had, I wanted more sourness and tartness to give it that sharper, more authentic flavor profile. The biggest disappointment was the cà phê trứng, or egg coffee. After having the real thing in Vietnam, I was excited to try HaiSous' version, but the coffee was not strong or bitter enough to create the right contrast, there was not much beaten egg, and the drink was overwhelmed by a large amount of whipped cream. It came across more like a very sweet dessert coffee than a faithful egg coffee. Overall, we enjoyed the meal and would come back. There are some misses, but the stronger dishes -- especially the wings, bánh xèo, and crab noodles -- make HaiSous worth trying for a creative Vietnamese brunch or dinner.

The spring rolls came as a pair, both long. Everything was packaged well. Both dishes were very fresh with great flavor. The chicken cabbage salad was amazingly good, with the cabbage still having some crisp to it despite being mixed with the chicken and dressing. The flavor was a great combination of citrus and a gingery kick, and some fresh herbs on top made it even better. After smelling the chemical fumes that's always present at airports, I tend to always crave something soupy and comforting. Phodega was near where I was staying, and my friend and her roommate also heard positive reviews on the food here. We arrived closer to 8 PM last Monday and were seated immediately. Their menu is a hodge-podge of popular Asian street food and snacks. It was a bit random, but I guess that's why it's... Phodega. PHO BO (BEEF) - 16.95 +3 for extra ribeye The broth was really strong and flavorful, very meaty and beefy. However, the noodle to broth ratio was a bit too high for me. I really liked the broth too, and there wasn't much of it after the noodles sucked it all up. Adding the extra ribeye beef helped balance it out, which was a good call for me that night. My friend got the "Not BBH" and didn't really like it, and her roommate absolutely despised the Korean Style Dumplings. Definitely get the beef pho at Phodega because it did the job for me besides the overwhelming amount of noodles.
