I always drive by this place and I didn't feel like cooking or eating leftovers for dinner. I asked another patron in line what she would recommend. Since I'm not quite adventurous enough to try the oxtail, I went with the jerk chicken. Both she and the lady at the counter warned me that the food would be very spicy. I don't have a very high tolerance for spiciness but I was surprised to find it only had a slight kick to it anyhow. $7.00 for two pieces of chicken, a side of rice, mixed vegetables, and a few plantains. The chicken was pretty tasty but hard to pick through to get to the meat for some reason. The plantains were somewhat dry. Lots of packaged food and drinks are also sold inside the market. I was in the area and decided to stop by since I was I. The mood for ackee and salt fish for breakfast. I arrived when they just opened and already the food for the day was cooked and on display. I order ackee/fried dumplings/salt fish/callaloo and curry goat/rice&peas/veggie. I personally didn't like the ackee. I'm not sure what "oil" they used but it threw off the taste and made it really "greasy". Also, for ackee and saltfish there were a good 4 small pieces of saltfish in my plate. Wish there were a bit more to balance out the ackee. The portion size was big enough. I actually never got to the curry goat and put it in the fridge for later just because I really wasn't feeling the ackee and saltfish. I happened to stumble upon this restaurant after visiting a store next door. Let's just say it was a great idea. My dad and I ordered breakfast: liver with banana, cassava, yam, and collard greens while my dad had ackee and saltfish with yam, dumpling, banana, cassava, and collard greens. The food was amazing! It was perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. I know where I will be going for lunch and dinner next time around. Stopped by my favorite place for some good Jamacian food today. I'm a very picky eater, and I always get the curry chicken because I know it's great. Today I decided to venture out a bit and try the ox tail. OMG!!!!! Sooooo good. The meat was so tender and well seasoned. I always love the peas/rice it's so good. Got the cabbage. Oh my! It just melted in my mouth. I just moved up in this area earlier this year and this is without a doubt my go to place for some fantastic food. FYI... I got a small ox tail platter and there is more than enough for me to have lunch and dinner. Oh..... and the customer service...... well all I can say is they treat me like family!!!!!!!!! Came here randomly and my experience wasn't the best. The food was mediocre at best. Poor customer service and pretty expensive for what you get. I had gotten the lamb stew and the sauce was pretty decent but I was charged a pretty penny for a dish that was mostly made up of little bones. The beef patty was alright though. Not the best but not the worst and better than 711 beef patties haha. Would I come back? Probably not unless I had a weird hankering for some Jamaican food. read more

I was soo disappointed! I called the number recently bc I was in the area and to my surprise it rung, someone answered and just like that I got the new location!!!! I must agree, after visiting the new owners on a few occasions now, the food was old, chewy and dry. When I got home and tasted, I immediately called to complain. The lady was LESS than pleasant. Really rude. I ordered jerk chicken and it had no pleasing flavor, tasted old, was overcooked, chewy and ultra dry. The old owner was over priced and small servings, but the food was tasty. Parking is terrible! There are too many great food spots for the limited parking. The two guys who work there are great. The rice and peas are the best I have ever had. The cabbage is to die for. Some people over cook cabbage, but theirs has a nice bite, just enough. The jerk chicken is OK. I say ok because it is a little dry. I think the dryness is my fault because I go after work, close to their closing time. I probably get the chicken that has been there all day, as they cook a lot in the morning and that's it. This place is horrible. So I waited in a long line with two servers serving very slow busy talking and taking forever. On top of that when I ordered Jerk Chicken I asked for jerk sauce and they said they don't have it? Big disappointment. I had to ask for their Beef stew sauce to pour on it. Island Market is in Gaithersburg and is a hole in wall type grocery store with really authentic Jamaican food. Their jerk chicken is tender, juicy and flavorful. They even pour the jerk sauce over your peas and rice and chicken! That's how you're supposed to do it! Island Pride is located in Rockville. The restaurant is across from Montgomery College Rockville. They're next to the Cuban restaurant and near Seafood Cameron's. This and Island Market is hands down the best Jamaican restaurant in Montgomery County, MD! I was recommended by several Jamaicans that told me that these two places are as authentic as you can get and I tried it myself. The workers there are kinda rude and it's a run down dirty restaurant that doesn't look clean. I tried liking the food but not worth it. After making a trip past my area to run an errand, I ran into this Caribbean spot on my way and have loved it ever since! The portions are more than enough to fill you up and the food is authentic and amazingly good. I ordered the curried chicken with spinach and rice as my sides, and it was perfect. That with a piece of coco bread was about $10, which was great for the portions I received. They were very friendly too, as it almost felt like going to a close family friend's for dinner and interacting with them. Island PRIDE? Aye don't TINK so - eh! This place is "just okay" and is nothing to write home about. I don't understand how people who obviously EAT good caribbean home cooking, can serve certain things to people the way they do; for example: *Dry, bland, and hard plantain! *Undercooked, and underseasoned, bland, stewed-cabbage! *Old roughly cut Kallaloo that is barely seasoned! Why? I mean just..... why? I just KNOW these restaurant ownders don't serve food to their families this way, so why serve it to the public? They need to focus on the QUALITY of their product and not the quantity of their sales. I went to the newest location on Rockville Pike today and came away with very dry plantains. I don't understand how I am able to get PERFECTLY cooked, sweet and delicious plantain from a nearby Peruvian chicken place, but walk away from a Caribbean place with plantain so dry and hard they prompted me to write a review here. I wish someone with a passion for caribbean food would open a real caribbean restaurant in Montgomery County already. Caribbean Feast was even worse than this place and I'm sort of glad they shut down. Update: 5/11/16 I had to update my review on what once use to be a good restaurant. My initial review was from 2012, which was a favorable review. (See 2012 review below) Four years later and it's no longer the same place. The food which use to be consistent is no longer consistent at all. They display the food on the counter top and many dishes are prepared and ready to be served. I noticed most of the dishes were swimming in oil. A lot of oil! I can understand if there is some oil, but I became nervous when I noticed the excess amount of oil today. This coupled with the fact that each time I have eaten at this place in the past 3 years it's been bad. I thought I was unlucky each time, but a pattern was beginning to emerge. Each trip yielded disappointing results from over cooked, bland and stringy food. This never use to happen before 2012! I don't know what changed. The owner use to be so accommodating and now he seems to be off in some way. He doesn't greet people as he use to. It's as though he is burned out or something and it shows. I ordered the oxtails today and it was loaded with a lot of red bell peppers. However, that is what it tasted like. Red bell peppers and the meat was tough. The rice and peas and veggies were good, but the main part of the dish was awful. During my visit today there was only one other person/patron in the restaurant. The Greek restaurant (The Big Greek Cafe) two doors down was packed and busy. As I left Nice N Spicy I realized I should have ordered food from The Big Greek Cafe. I went inside The Big Greek Cafe and the aroma in the air was amazing. I wish I had went inside before I went to Sweet N Spicy. The next time I am in the area I will go to either The Big Greek Cafe or Angelos across the street. Both serve really good food. Don't take my word for it, go inside each restaurant and see where are the people are. That's sometimes a good indication where the good food is at. lol I will not return, since you never know what you are going to get. You might luck out and the food maybe good or it could be terrible. I will no longer recommend this rat trap. If I am in the mood for Jamaican food, then there is no need to go to Sweet N Spicy. I prepare Jamaican food so much better than this lousy restaurant and there are many much better Caribbean restaurants nearby. NOTE: To those who hold Restaurant.com coupons to this establishment don't expect to use them. They claim the use of the coupon is fraud and they no longer participate with Restaurant.com. I contacted Restaurant.com and I was told they did stop participating with Restaurant.com, but much later than the date I purchased the coupon. I'm not certain why the owner had to lie about this, but I had a feeling he was just making everything up. What a liar! A Jamaican restaurant in a place where you would never expect one. It's tucked away in a strip mall off of Georgia Ave., right around where Georgia Ave. turns into the boonies. My favorite place in the world. ::sarcasm:: It gains a star just for being in such a crappy location - it made the drive to my destination a lot better. The menu is rather limited and consists of the Jamaican standbys - oxtail stew, curried goat, goat soup, patties (chicken/vegetable/beef [spicy or mild]), fried plantains, some dishes with fish, etc. The patties weren't bad, but not the best I've ever had. Same with the plantains, and I also got a 'fried dumpling' that tasted like...well, if you took one of the biscuits from popeyes, squeezed it like a tomato and formed it back into a very dense ball, and then deep fried it. sounds odd, and I'm sure that won't make any sense to those of you reading this, but it worked. Especially for 40 cents or however much it was. Would have gone great with that goat soup, if I had gotten it. Another plus - great drink selection. Review is not for service or food quality but for incorrect information being posted online. Google had today's hours listed as being open until 8pm, here on yelp it is listed as 7pm. I went to check the company website and it sent me to their Facebook page which states it was open until 7pm , however when my bf and I arrived the store was closed and the hours posted stated they closed at 6pm. A complete waste of time and disappointment for my hungry bf. Would suggest calling first before driving here, however we will more than likely not be wasting our time with this place again. And I know it isn't just us because another lady walked up to the door at the same time and looked at the hours confused and stated "man i thought the hours said 8". Favorite Jamaican food anywhere! Amazing Amazing food. I've been going since about 2006, and it's just really good! Fast for Jamaican food too! Usually some decent TV shows on if you stop in for lunch. Rare sodas and drinks like Irish Moss, Jamaican pantry too for Jamaican foods and sauces. And some gourmet ice cream too! Coco bread is awesome! Beef patties are perfect! Chicken is juicy, spicy, leaves you a little forehead sweat. The way it's should be! Ox Tail is out of this world! Red Snapper is indescribable. Crispy, flaky, juicy, so much going on here. You have to try everything on the menu! These people have a gift for food. I literally cannot drive by them during business hours. Maybe I'm spoiled but I don't see why everyone is so excited about the prices here. I suppose if you compare it to fast food you would come out ahead. Food - Portions are fairly big, quality of food is decent. Better than fast food but nothing to write home about. Service - Unimpressive. I don't expect all smiles but both the man and the woman working there looked and acted as if they would rather not be there. Knowledgeable Staff - Horrendous. I am a picky eater and want to know what I am eating. This has become easier even at fast food places as a lot of them post ingredient and allergy information. Here it was like PULLING TEETH. When I finally got an answer is was a vague one and getting to that answer took 5-10 minutes. I assumed a local small business would know what they actually put in their food and what they cook with but I was incorrect. Overall Island Pride is a decent place to get some quick eats.
